What's the reason (or reasons) new jobs aren't added to the initial roster?

By which I mean the roster of classes available to you when you're new to the game. Hypothetically speaking, they would be starting from level 1, with the only requirement being that you own the respective expansion.

I'd never really given this much thought, since I've always been at cap when an expansion drops and have met the requirements, but I recently ran into a situation in which I convinced a friend of mine to get the game. Something that influenced his decision was the idea of playing the samurai job. He's still going to play, but was bummed with the prospect of having to level til 50 to unlock something he would've liked to play from the get-go.

Not that leveling to 50 takes a long time, of course, what with the changes to experience distribution to the 2.X content, but it'd be nice to have these options available to the newbies.

Classes are locked because they require a bit more skill to play. Not much. Also they are DLC content. Why should DLC classes start at level 1?

I think because that would require more work. They would have to make more job quests, more weapons all the way up from 1-80.

At least, that's just what i think.

Well, in this situation, the person would have already paid for the DLC. I'm thinking, ideally you could, as someone already at endgame, start them at level 50, while someone who's new to the game could start at 1.

Or we can just not give the developers extra work that is completely pointless.

Yes, all classes have skills that they get at the proper levels from Level 1+, they don't have access to weapons and such from the same levels, not counting glamour weapons that are added. As well as them having to add additional class quests/lore to those lower levels as well.

I do wish classes would start at somewhat lower levels, but that's just so people aren't given a high level class they don't know how to play in the slightest.

I don't think it's pointless. Having a greater variety of choice in the initial roster would certainly be a plus for someone who's just starting.

For the HW jobs, they'd need to write and design another 81 new job quests in total. The investment does not seem worth the return.

I suppose they could just not have them start any job quests until they reach the original requirement level, that is, 30 for the HW jobs and 50 for the SB jobs.

I think the true (and I thought, obvious) answer is that the majority of the players are already near max level on most of the jobs they intend to play, and doing earlier content more often would be tedious to level new jobs.

My suggestion is that new players be able to start the game as any of the new jobs from level 1. Existing, already-at-endgame players could pick up the new jobs at higher levels, as is currently the case.

Then they would need to redesign the initial quests because they make a very big deal out of you obtaining the soul crystal, especially DRK. You also couldn't start the HW job quests until 50 because you can't get into the Holy See itself before finishing ARR.

I feel like at this point, one could just say "gameplay and story segregation" though I suppose one could argue that there's a lot of mindfuckery going on in the DRK quest, so you finding your job stone could be rationalized away.

I realize that it'd make little sense with the way some quests stand now. That said, if it allows newbies to experience the job from the get-go, I'd be fine with that.

They are considered advanced jobs. Also could you imagine if they started at lvl 1. There isnt much content to help you level in early game content if you completed all the MSQ and side quests. Which is why starting them at lvl50+ is good because we have things such as PoD and HoH.

Again, this hypothetical scenario is from the perspective of a newbie. To someone just starting, they have... well, the whole game to explore and gain experience from. I'd argue agains the notion that they're "advanced jobs." I don't see anything they have over other, non-expansion jobs that would prevent them from being learnable from level 1.

Tbf that notion that RDM is an advanced job is laughable... (not making fun of anyone here btw)

At risk of deviating from the topic a little, I think they ought to make Rogue available as a starting class during character creation. Its class quests already start at level 1 and cross-class skills are no longer a thing making it less of a necessity to level another class beforehand, so I see no reason why it shouldn't be available from the onset.

I think they just assumed nobody wants to start all over again at lv 1.

In this hypothetical scenario, someone starting fresh (as in, from level 1), would have the option to select from old or new jobs as part of the initial roster.
People already at endgame could simply unlock the job at its original level requirement (30 for HW jobs, 50 for SB jobs, etc...)

I have a sinking suspicion its not because it can be level 1... but that the Character Creator and Class Choice system is not very... expandable. Like well before ARR was a thing, they decided that each city state had a set of classes. What if when they created that, they didn't ensure any room could be made through it to add others. So they when with the unlock thing instead?

I so would have loved rogue at chara creation. Though lvl 10 (15 if you start in another city state) isn't hard to reach.

Sorry this doesn't help the thread at all but didn't know where else to ask. I recently started playing game maybe 2 weeks ago tops and just realized I've been getting 2xp the entire time. Does anyone know why this is the case and how long it lasts?

and to answer your question jardani you might notice a buff in the upper corner of your screen that says "Road to 60". if you made your character on a "Preferred World", they will have the Road to 60 buff which will greatly speed up the rate of which you acquire xp and level up, until you hit 60. after you hit 60, that class will not receive the road to 60 buff but all other jobs under 60 will.

No because those jobs don't have any practical main hand weapons below their initial level.

New player perspective or veteran perspective is irrelevant since that doesn't change the effort it would take on the dev team for something so minor. Sure they could just no do quests until their initial level, but that doesn't change the fact the have to model weapons and animations for said weapons at those really low levels.

The idea you're proposing is nice and all but from a development standpoint its just utterly pointless.

I suppose for new players it is not as good that they can't be selected on character creation. But for people at current max level it's much better that they start the expansion classes at a higher level so they can use them in the expansion more readily.

Though I'm surprised they haven't added Rogue to the character creation.

The answer to that is it's a lot more work for the devs and it's easier to just create shortcuts for those at the required level (maybe even less for say DNC and GNB since those will be starting at Lv60 but only require Lv50 MSQ done).

It would also involve the devs to create weapons for them all the way from 1 to 59 for DNC/GNB, 1 to 49 for RDM/SAM and 1 to 29 for AST/MCH/DRK. It's just a lot of work that can easily be cut out by just asking you to level one job to Lv50 (or more for AST/MCH/DRK since they require MSQ as well as Lv30).

They could make 1-49/1-59/1-69 not require job quests and make it work like PotD where you get your skills without doing job quests, but it still requires them to do work for every other level via the creation of weapons, etc. That's not including any lore implications and anything else that doesn't deal with gameplay proper.

That makes perfect sense and is probably the case for me but where would i see if i have that buff or not? I'm on ps4 i dont know if that changes where i would see it or anything.

As someone up there mentioned, it's entirely possible that the class choice system is not as expandable as one would like... which is a shame really... lol.

As for the lack of weapons, they could just re-use models or recolor existing ones. I feel like they could work towards coming up with a cost-effective solution to this. Giving more options to people starting off is nothing to scoff at.

To be honest, it has nothing to do with coding. Many of you have got to get off that tangent of thinking anytime something isn't being done, its because of coding issues. There USED to be a limitation in RAM for PS3 back in 1.0 and early 2.0, but since PS3 support was dropped, that is no longer a concern.

The reason new classes don't start at 1 has to do with players simply not wishing to replay through starting areas devoid of quests since they've already exhausted them on leveling other classes. That and it limits item bloat in areas of the game that are not very current. And like others have stated, it limits the number of job quests they need to create.

For those of you wishing for a level 1 experience on new classes, Palace of the Dead features it well.

Some of the jobs that don't have a class to start on also weren't designed to work much if at all at anything lower than what they start at. Then there is the whole jobs aren't classes bit. Along with the whole would have to have ad in and change story quests, lore changed, gear added and not have three of them locked behind msq progression.

Mostly because it would be a pain in the rear to have two separate progression lines for new jobs.

They need to keep the "start from level X" progression in the game, because veteran players for the most part don't want to have to start at level 1 for expansion jobs.

So if they added them to character creation, they would no only have to have a separate progression system for starting them from level 1, but they would also have to create like 20+ new job quests to fill in the 50-60 level gap. That's a ridiculous amount of work.

HW jobs are in ishgard and would take too much effort to move elsewhere.

The others start at too high of a level.
