Bought the game yesterday

It's my first time ever playing FFXIV and I have never played FFXI so this kind of MMO is new to me. I bought a PC controller, am running the game smoothly, and am very happy about the graphics and how there seems to be a lot you can do in this game.

I've only been playing 1 full day so I haven't actually seen many people on my server yet, haven't partied or talked to a single person in game. This is my first Forum post too.

When I started playing, I started in Gridania and followed the main quest chain which had a few cutscenes, a lot of talking that I read, and it eventually ended with the adventurers guild lady telling me to go to the first camp and do some leve quests. I took some battle leves, did them, and repeated that like 3 times. :( I've done like 8+ of these level 1 quests and now I'm given no direction where to go. I talked to so many NPCs in the city but none of them had a quest marker over their head, and I can't figure out how to advance in the story line. I've played for about 10 hours now yet all I have done is walked all around the pretty city, and walked down to that first nooby camp to do some leves and botany.

I have no idea where to go now...Please help >.<

I'm going to use this thread to ask all my stupid questions as they come to me since I have no one in game to ask.

-For starters I'm just asking for some direction as to what I should be doing ^-^; Thank you. The last thing I want to do is get too frustrated and stop playing

right now you really just need to level

as you level, your npc pearl you got from your nation will eventualy start to glow, this means your next story quest is ready

but in general, you really just need to level to really get going, i suggest uldah as a place to go to find parties as most people hang out there

I'll say you should try to make some friend first and get a helpful linkshell.

I suggest finding a good linkshell as soon as humanly possible.

Welcome! The best thing I can tell you to do is to talk to the guildleve counter NPC and find out what your next-level camp is called. Go back out to the Shroud and look for it in map and make sure you get there and keep at it. It's safe to say that if the camp is level 10, you can head over there at level 8 or 9. Guildleves are an immense help, especially in the lower levels.

If you need help learning how to play, the Lodestone's play guide is very in-depth now, so you can see if any questions are answered in there first. I'm assuming you know how to get there since you have to go through it to get to these forums, but if not follow this link.

Things should start opening up at around level 10, and if you want to be around more people players spend most of their time in Ul'dah, so you can take an Airship there or go by foot.

I came to this game from World of Warcraft so I would have never guessed you were supposed to grind monsters to level fast. World of Warcrafts leveling is all just following quest hub to quest hub, and you get such little exp for randomly killing monsters your level that it's never worth it. Now that I know it's a good idea to seek out mobs my level and kill them, I'll do that while saving up some Level quests. :D

Ok so story quests just come available to me as I level... Lol I was looking all over for where to travel to in order to progress through the story.

Why is Ul'dah so popular? I didn't think the desert looked nice which is why I chose Gridania. I'm happy to know I can travel to any of the 3 cities at any time without consequence. Is there an easy way to find a Linkshell other than sit in the city and ask everyone 1 by 1 if I can join? I don't want to be annoying haha

Alright, I'm going to head back in the game and figure some stuff out. I've been talking to every single NPC hoping the game will make more and more sense. So happy my thread got so many replies and in a short amount of time.

Well, you could ask everyone at once using /shout. No one should get annoyed unless you spam it every 5 seconds.

People have been gathering in Ul'dah for several reasons:

1) It has the most convenient layout
2) All the cities' storylines eventually meet up there
3) For a long time early in the game's life it had the best high level levequests
4) Due to all 3 of the above, everyone set their retainers to sell items in Ul'dah's Markets, and because of that it's the only place you will find players selling things.

It's fine to hang around in whatever city you like now that we have airships, but if you want to socialize you'd want to head there. As was mentioned /shout that you are looking for a LS will help, or you can try your server's forums on this site.

I'll mention what has already been mentioned. Ul'dah is where the people are

~~Also, Server merges this month will soon make for more people.
~~Also, as far as what to do, any time you see an NPC with a ! mark, that's a quest.
And being in Ul'Dah, you can see who's shouting for what.
Visit the Forum for the world you joined here on lodestone and find a Linkshell, or shout for one in Ul'Dah.
And err... prepare as best as you can for 2.0? xD

If you want to see more people, they are mostly around Ul'dah etc. you can walk from gridania till Thanalan/U'ldah which you can see at the map.

Gridania is not much populated

it will take you a while to get there ;) if you touch the aetherytes you can easily port back to them.

You need to talk with the lady in the adventure guild again

If you lost direction in a quest best is to look in your journal menu. There you can read the text to the quest and there you find a map button for directions.

Huh!? You serious? IIRC there's a quest at the Adventurers' Guild of each city in order to introduce this feature to the players... You should read 1.19 Patch Notes (09-30-2011).

Once more, are you kiddin'? No offense, but I'm still shocked...

Just a sugestion i always do to new ppl. Before leveling your main job level up all others jobs to get this skills:

Arc 2 > Decoy
Lnc 14 > Invigorate
Mrd 6 > Bloodbath
Pgl 6 > Fatherfoot and Second Wind
Con 18 > Cure, Protect and Raise
Gla 22 > Sentinel

This skills are must have to play. Also leveling all classes at the begging is nice to see which one you like as your main.

I agree totally with everything Signy said! However, I do want to add that they're not so much "required" as they are extremely useful skills that will be expected at higher levels/endgame. Please don't feel restricted, like in XI (In XI, leveling another job was literally required (by the community) before you could join in anything). In particular, many people reach level 50 without Raise or Protect (or in many cases Sentinel, but I think since you're playing MRD it would be in your best interests to get it sooner rather than later. :D)

If you love exploring, instead of taking airship, try find your way to uldah and other city by following the roads in gridania all the way south. =p. touching all those camp nodes along the way to facilitate your travel later. I am from grid too, glad u love the forest scenery like me :D. Try make new friends and a nice shell, leveling with a party is always more fun and you get to learn more things with a shell and friends =p. Good luck

This thread made me remember that i never use the boat to go from grid to limsa. I hope they don't disable it on the patch. :(

Something to keep in mind. FFXIV has a lot of horizontal development, this concept will be new to you compared to playing WoW. It means to be successful, it's not just about "getting to 50," and getting good "loot." As suggested in an earlier post, look at leveling a few classes to 15-20. This will go a long way at making you much stronger in battle, and help give you much needed survivability.

The game is also very open, and will not direct you along like WoW does. The result of this is a very rewarding experience in my opinion. You discover your own goals as you explore the game. The main story will prompt you for the most part (through NPC linkpearls) as you progress, and sidequests will start to show up as you gain levels. Also being a Marauder, you'll want to wander over to Limsa Lominsa when you hit level 20 for your first Marauder Guild quest.

The reason Ul'dah is so popular is because the story quests lead there, and so most people end up there for the majority of their leveling experience. As a result, people have naturally migrated their bazaar retainers to Ul'dah, and so after the game has been up as long as it has, pretty much it's to the point where virtually everyone uses Ul'dah as the primary hub of the game (think Orgrimmar or Stormwind; those are really good comparisons).

Basically, if you're coming from WoW, the best thing you could do is to find some good in-game friends who can teach you the ettiquette of FF XIV. It's dramatically different from WoW, and around here you can set people off in ways you don't want simply by doing things that you may be accustomed to doing.

I picked up a whole bunch of Leves yesterday for fishing, logging ect. but then went to bed before doing them. When I woke up and started playing FFXIV, I was in a party and did about 6 Leves that belonged to someone else. After he went to bed I wanted to do the Leves picked up last night but they are all greyed out except for one. :( What causes them to be greyed out? I didn't do a single one of them. And I read that doing other peoples Leves has zero effect on your own

Besides that I got my Botany and Marauder up a little bit so I'm happy. Need to work on crafting next so I can replace all my level 1 gear

Last question: If a shirt says "Gathering+5" on it, what does that actually improve?

If the grayed out quest has a red x next to it hen it's a failed quest...if not, I forget what it means. The gathering stat is for disciple of the land classes and increases your ability to find higher level items. Its similar to craftsmanship and magic craftsmanship for disciples of the hand, which increases success for synthesis.

If you're interested in the gathering classes, I suggest you bookmark disciplesoftheland.com. It is a very comprehensive database on everything DoL related.

buy some mining equipment and mine til your eyes bleed.

If your guildleves are greyed out, you might be at the wrong Aetherite camp. Doublecheck the journal where the start location is.
