Abilities you hope get renamed in 5.0

Armor Crush: Armor Crush was a War ability in older FF games to lower a enemies Defense. I wish the name was something Ninjay since it doesn't lower defense but keeps your haste going.

Leg Sweep: You gave Leg Sweep for the DPS the Low Blow animation but didn't change the name. Either it needs a leg sweeping animation or needs to be called Low Blow.

I would like to see name changes on all those Black Mage spells: I, II and III to their correct form used in all others FF games: Fire > Fira > Firaga, please? :)

Oh. I forgot about those. I posted in another tread that I would like the AoE spells of BLM renamed to the -ara, -aga and -aja versions with the single target spells being I, II and III.

I would like this only if they make it uniform, meaning it applies to all families of spells, like aero and bio and quake, etc. If it cannot be done, maybe because of awkward naming, then might as well keep the Roman numerals.

Except I, II, III and so on level spells have been a part of the FF series since the beginning, in so far as the English localization anyway. Not necessarily opposed to them changing the names, but in the name of "correctness" I'd find it rather silly.

Only in the English releases because they couldn't fit the full names of spells in a 4-character space. The original Final Fantasy's Japanese release uses the -ra -ga -ja naming convention.

Personally I preferred FFXI's style which kept the numbered tiers for spells and used suffixes to denote area of effect.

-ra would be a point-blank aoe
-ga would be an aoe around your target
-ja would be a bigger aoe around your target

I will say that for new BLMs, having Fire II and Blizzard II as the AoEs when Fire III and Blizzard III are then not, is not great. Just from an intuitiveness perspective, that's not ideal.

All I want is Rescue to be renamed 'GET OVER HERE'. Because every time I use it I imagine I'm Scorpion yoinking people to my side, and the yellow color of the button doesn't help.

What and why?
Armor Crush is literally an animation of two-fistedly shoving a knife as if through some armored target's armpit.
Aeolian Edge has a whirlwind animation. Aeolian <-> Wind.
Shadow Fang has a shadowy animation and, as per so many other shadow-themed skills across RPGs, inflicts vulnerability and deals further damage over time.

Just rename Armor Crush to Wind Spike or whatever to befit its Huton effect and they're solid.

If they're doing away with the stupid role actions I want shadowskin back and the sparta kick to be drk exclusive again. I do NOT want to see gunbreaker kicking anyone.

Not specifically a name change but rather an icon change. I want the Scholar "Summon" spells to not be Carbuncles please. Make them Fairies.

Right... they're egis, not primals... summoning primals to do your dungeon for you would be problematic in the game's lore. Egis are little controllable pieces of a primal.

There is a world of punctuation begging for your attention. That was legitimately difficult to read.

And no you didn't use the word "primals," that's true. You said "they are not garuda,ifirt and titan" (sic). Those are primals. So the logical inference there was to go ahead and relate that term to what you were saying. This seems reasonable in the context of complaining that the egis don't resemble their primal origins more.

As for Ysayle. Yeah she embodied Shiva and was able to summon Shiva to share her body with her. That didn't make that a good thing. Pay attention to the story. Primal summoning is bad for everyone. It depletes the land of aether, and primals also have the nasty habit of tempering people to serve as thralls. Not something you'd want just kind of floating around Gridania.

Egis are tiny self-contained pieces of a primal that aren't walking environmental disasters.

Also if you hate the lore explanation, there's also the fact that large pet models are hugely disruptive in a game like this where so much of your attention has to be on the ground around you. Smaller models were used intentionally here so as to minimize that disruption.

That's only becoming harder and harder to read.

Heaven on High is a contained area where the designers can deliberately determine how to handle a larger model. That's not the same as determining that for every dungeon and raid in the game, or for determining it for every FATE in the game. I can only imagine how 200 large pet models in a FATE would light computers on fire to say nothing of the fact that literally no one would be able to see the ground to avoid telegraphs.

The final boss in Xelphatol that you're referring to is, again, one specific instance where it's designed as part of a fight. You'll notice I didn't say primal models can never exist, they obviously exist.. we fight them. I'm saying they won't work as player pets because the game's design doesn't allow for it.

As for me sucking up to the dev team, you should probably look back through my post history a little... I don't do that. I'm very critical of development and design decisions in FFXIV. But I've also done game design myself and I do understand why this particular decision was made.

I want Flare/Foul to be rename "EXPLOSION!"

Yes! And additionally, LB3 should automatically kill BLM upon finishing the cast. The animation lock is so long it happens anyways, and it's not like any self-respecting BLM leaves their Leylines even when they can move.

Rename Divine Benison to Stoneskin.

Swap the names of shoulder tackle and steel peak, it baffles me that you punch someone with shoulder tackle and shoulder bash someone with steel peak

I do, and throwing the odd punch with his empty hand, want them to be different abilities to DRK ones though. The whole 100% exact copies of skills thing was ultimately very meh.

That's because action names are a form of interface feature. The names of the spells allow us to differentiate them. The thing is, if the naming convention isn't meaningful beyond separating the spells into version 1, 2, 3, and 4, then using numbers is superior because we already speak numbers and don't have to learn a new counting system just to differentiate between the spells.

Switching to a suffix system is only a good choice, from a UI/UX designer's perspective, if the suffixes carry some sort of meaning. XI did this beautifully. Spellra was an AoE spell centered on caster and Spellga was an AoE spell centered on target. Using that system, Medica would be Cura and Cure III would be Curaga, while Cure II would still be just Cure II. For BLM we would have Fire, Firaga (targeted AoE), Fire II (currently 3), Fire III (currently 4) and Blizzard, Blizzara (pbAoE), Blizzard II, Blizzard III; Thunder, Thundaga, Thunder II, Thundaga II.

I would approve of such a system.

However, if we just want to rename spells to make them sound more Final Fantasy, without the suffixes having any meaning, then that's not an effective naming scheme. We might as well just stick with pure numbering, because suffixes in this case would really just be numbers playing dress-up, and we'd effectively be asking new players to learn a new number system just for the sake of immersion.

The summons in Heaven on High aren't actually primals though, if you bothered to read the item description.

Infuriate changed into Warcry.

1. It is its literal name in the other 3 languages of the game.
2. It made sense during ARR since it was granting the Infuriate status (5 stacks of Wrath). However, during Heavensward, it could also grant the Uncontrollable status (5 stacks of Abandon) (Note that this the moment where the French localization team changed the name of the skill from the translation of Infuriate to the translation of Warcry).
3. The Infuriate buff hast stopped existing since Stormblood's release and the implementation of WAR job gauge.
