Today, I learned new things about materia:

1. It can be retrieved from gear. (Stripped old gear, have tons of materia now.)

2. There's a limit as to how much + materia can add to gear (So many +0/+1 waste)

(Every time I got new gear, I'd buy all new materia for it. I'm going to sell a lot of what I just retrieved to recoup my losses.. )

Aye. Also to note: The limit to how much + you can add is based on ilvl and slot, and INCLUDES the base stats already on the item. This is why main stat materia is generally worthless (Any HQ or non-crafted gear will have those capped, outside of VIT on non-tank accessories or STR on tank accessories), and why you need to know more than just the singular best stat for your class.

...you just saved my gil. I don't think I would have learned this before I started replacing my gear in ShB.

I also didn't realize until recently that you can add more materia than there are slots. Like that's a thing right?
I want to try it but not this late in an expansion... just saving up for the next now. I guess being able to unmeld helps with that too.

Yes, but only on certain gear. Crafted gear can be pentamelded (5 melds), but gear you get from dungeons/raids/tomestones can only accept materia in slots.

I think an entire thread could be made entirely around things you didn't know you could do in this game.

Two things that have peaked my interest for no other reason other than they are possible to do:

-You can desynth stuff in instanced/duty-finder content
-You can meld materia in instanced/duty-finder content

In fact, if I ever want to get "revenge" on a player who is very whiny during a run that is going rather smoothly, I usually pay attention to how they roll on gear. If they roll greed and the others roll pass, I roll greed. When I win some of the items, I desynth them right there and then for all to see.

Ah thanks good to know. I planned to look more into it when the time came. I mostly just want to deck out my gathering set.

When you are melding the text color of the stat addition goes red and there is an orange warning in the confirm box if you aren't going to get the full amount that includes getting 0. If you go through with it, the substat amount in the tooltip will also be red if it's a partial or 0 meld.

At the bottom of the meld selection it also shows you the caps/limit of the gear you have selected.

To add to this, sometimes a partial meld on a stat is better than a full meld on another stat.

For my post, assume the following terminology (different people tend to use them differently):

Stats = things like Crit, Direct Hate Rate, etc

Attributes = STR, DEX, etc

Primary Stats = Stats that influence your game-play the most, being 2nd in place only to attributes as well as things like weapon damage rating and armor defenses

Secondary Stats = Stats that influence your game-play, but not nearly as much as primary stats

If you're missing like 2 points out of 40 for a meld on a primary stat, doing a full meld on a secondary stat may or may not be a good idea.

In other words, don't just say "I see red text. ABORT!" Try to put a little thought into it.

There is a crown you can earn for melding so you can use those cheap materia that were about to meet the vendor onto some cheap gear instead (or go gil blazing for some fancy penta meld gear you'll actually use lol).

I want to add that when you combine the materia, you will never get the same type of materia out of it wich you used for combining.

For example when you used a crit+ materia for combining you will not get a crit+ materia as a result. So keep that in mind when you throw some lower grade materia into the mix. A crit V materia will make it impossible for you to get a crit VI out of it.

Good point to remind people of.

Don't throw already great tier materia into the fire, but trash tier materia is quite welcome :D.

Also edited it to be more clear, since that's obviously important for people to know.

Also, since I was unaware of limit, I had many slots filled with +10 materia that was only giving me a 0-2 result. If you want to top off a stat with 2 more points, use a cheaper, low level materia that will give you just enough. n

However, I can't believe that having another +2 of any stat could be better than a +10-15 of something else beneficial.
(Are there any published stat rankings that show the actual percentage benefits of each one?)

I said 2 missing, like a scenario where the materia gives +40, but actually melding it would only give +38.
