I disagree, I think the lupin look like ass.
Personally I think the Hrothgar models shown are nicer than the Lupins we've seen in game. I'm happy with the choice they've made personally and can't wait to make one. I also think the Hrothgar will be a lot more popular than some believe but I suppose we'll have to wait and see.
It's pretty obvious the Lupin models were not built with the same care and attention a playable model would've been. Also if they're struggling so much with Hroth and Viera faces, imagine the impossibility of making gear for Lupin faces which are far less humane.
definitely would have added a bit more variety than cat and bigger cats
but there is a wolf face apparently
they might not have come up with multiple faces to mix up the customization and probably saw the ronso inspiration then went with hrothgar.
Tbh I never liked the lupin race. When I saw it the 1st time I was shocked on how bad it looked I thought it was a joke and that maybe those were masks they were wearing.
Why hrothgar and lupin and not Amaljaa, Ixali, Kobold, Sahagin, Sylph, vanu vanu, vath, kojin, ananta or namazu? Much diversity, Yes yes?
As they declared they went with Hrothgars to fill a race slot they felt were missing. They presented feline heads mostly but in an interview Yoshi said they will have other heads than felines and cited wolves which might be akin to Lupins, and there might be more options.
I think they decided to make a new race the Hrothgar instead of making Lupin a playable race because Lupin are an established beastman race though the least hostile and one of the most integrated with man society. I think it may also have to do with the fact that Lupin were already in the game so they had less control in what they could do to their faces or body models without having to go back and change existing Lupin. With Hrothgar however they can start from scratch and I think they wanted to make a race that had a more muscular powerful looking body with better proportions. In my opinion the lupin head is tall large for the body and I think their shoulders and chest cavity should be bigger.
For Hrothgar, it'd be a matter of needing to change all the helmet meshes to fit their head shape(unless they did it with an algorithm like WoW or GW2, which results in hideous results where jaws are just hanging out from the bottom), and for viera it'd be their huge-ass ears. We at least know that specific pieces, like the DNC artifact headgear(a ribbon on the back of the head), will work.
Because Hrothgar are designed to have a Wolf like head addition in their customization.
I would've liked Lupin tbh, and it would've made more sense than making up a completely new race out of nowhere (will still be a bara cat boi on day 1 tho)....but my guess is they already showed how the average Lupin look all throughout SB, and can't or don't want to "retcon" them.
Lupin are great. If they can't be a proper race, I'd atleast like to be able to dress up in a makeshift Lupin mask with matching arms, feet, and tail. Something a bit more realistic than the wolf gear we got for Halloween, which I found to be dreadfully boring by comparison. I want something more immersive, like the Vanu Vanu or Namazu masks.
Hrothgar have their roots in being another FF fanservice race—equal to Viera—as FFX's Ronso. Hence their name on the first, and one of the playable Hrothgar looking like Kimahri from FFX just as they implemented Fran from XII. While they're developed essentially the same as Lupin (taking the neck-down of an existing race and adjusting the skeleton slightly/slapping an animal head on), Lupin don't generate the same amount of excitement as catering to FF fan nostalgia does.
I imagine that, coupled with already having visited Othard and seen their lore and story, on top of Hrothgar being advertised as having a wolf-like head option, is why we saw Hrothgar over anything like Lupin, as much as I'd love to have something akin to Worgen without ever playing Warcraft again.
They don't really have that many Lupin models, and the ones they do have are pretty crappy.
The Lupin had their lore very well entrenched within the Doman region and might have proved difficult work for the Devs in making customization options.
Plus, there was also the fiasco with their "wolf" gear as a reward during the 2017 All Saints Wake event... lets just say it wasn't well received... and this possibly gave the Dev team an additional indicator that the Lupin may not be the route to go for a new race.

The lupin models look so weird.
To me it just looks like a hyur body with a weird wolf head slapped on top of it.
Which should not be a factor when adding a race.
Also, pretty much all Lupin have the same face, so that "easier asset flip" doesn't really apply. They'd have to make additional face shapes, then nose/ear/eye/mouth/etc differences like they do with the current races, plus figure out how to handle hair or a hair equivalent, then make even bigger changes for any of the head gear to work...
Would end up being as much, if not more work.
I would have very much prefered Lupin.
Lupin have weird proportions. They should look more like this.https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/...20080524063238
This is not the interview I've read but Yoshi repeats here as well that Hrothgar have Wolves heads too other than a lot of customisation https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme...m_source=share
Having seen a picture of a Lupin, (I haven't reached Stormblood yet) I can see why they decided to go with Hrothgar instead. They (Lupin) do look like just like Hyurs with wolf heads on top. If the Lupin looked more like, say, the Worgen from World of Warcraft, then I would be more supportive of Lupin as a playable race.
