In game, they look absolutely nothing like this..
Was going to come in with "Because they're not Hrothgar" but then I saw it's art and now I can't choose how to respond. >:(
What is it in the art that you see that isn't something a miqote can/can't do in game?
Not sure what you are expecting.
Ahh yes, 2d art is definitely replicatable in a 3d game.
It's all subjective, I suppose. I'm not a huge fan of Miqo'te to begin with, though I'd say they look better in-game than in the seasonal event artwork - mostly because the seasonal event artwork has a habit of putting characters in weird poses that just look uncomfortable to be in.
Oh, I’m sorry. All I mean is that the art doesn’t look very similar to the game models, face-wise. That face art looks more like out of something from black desert online in my opinion.
Promotional artwork is very rarely comparable to the in-game art style, in my experience.
I have to agree though, to a certain degree. Most female Miqo'te faces don't look very appealing to me either. In fact, most of XIV's female faces in general don't look appealing to me.
Yeah haha, I’m a fan of how black desert models their characters! It’s so strange how SE’s big titles like FFXV look similar to that art style look, but FFXIV doesn’t do it. Hopefully in the next FF mmo (maybe XVI?) it’ll be like that more.
I totally agree. Unfortunately though, I don’t see SE changing this game’s graphics very much, even after PS5 comes out. Yoshi and his team just don’t seem that interested. :(
I'm not a fan of the black desert faces. They look like they tried to be too real, and it just looks like... Fakey, to me.
I would love to see certain races look like some official art or fan art but...for the most part it's not exactly reasonable. We are comparing apples to oranges here.
Look up Star Ocean 4's 3D models versus their anime art portraits. Going from anime to 3D doesn't look too great...unless its GranBlue.
I like the art more too, but it's a lot easier to make adjustments to art than models.
The miqo'te in the art looks older than the models, and is much more shapely.
Unless they add more faces and body types it all just boils down to preference though.
It's the eyes and symmetry. The faces look /too/ nice while straddling the line of hyper-realism which is what triggers the uncanny valley effect. The eyes don't help either. They're not bad but there's a level of blankness to them that just enhances that feeling. It's actually why I prefer FF14's models. They straddle stylism and realism quite well, which helps them side step those very issues because it isn't making our stupid brains try and play 4D chess against themselves in an attempt to reconcile the lack of errors.
I mean it is just not with ff14 style

It's more accurate to say that the artwork you linked is off-model compared to the in-game characters.
They invite guest artists to do the event art usually, though I don't recognize that N.M signature on this one.
Elezen in game wish they looked this good:

Excuse you. We're perfect the way we are, giraffe necks and all. D:<
Tales has done it perfectly in every one of their 3D games. Especially Vesperia. Xillia onwards still has a good style.

The art I've seen through this thread so far are mostly stylised, anime influenced pieces of art that wouldn't even fit FF14's current art style. The closest they've come to that style for races are through Lalafells, but they've made them a distinct race with their own lore, and even those don't even look heavily chibified. I'm sure the artists all have a consistent direction for how the characters should look ingame, but when it comes to official art, they're allowed to add a little bit of their own style and flair to the piece. It varies on the artist, but big anime eyes, long flowing glossy hair, glamourous figures are probably all drawn and used as inspiration, but they wouldn't be accurately depicted in the game.
Here's how much FF14 art varies between each other
Especially for cats and lizards, I find that some artists aren't really considering what they look like in game and are doing their own thing. I don't mean that in a negative sense, just that they just aren't following the limitations of in game options. Something about the eyes and face shape in the Hatching art that looks her look more mature or older than what people can make in engine. Roe on the other hand, when we do get some attention, are spot on.
Unpopular opinion, but I don't really think that art looks that great. I wish Yoshida would come back.
While the art is ok as far as art goes. I do not not not not want my character to look like that.
Her waist looks really unnaturally bent. She isn't just leaning forward, she's doubled over at the hips and then curving upwards again at the waist.
...seriously, I just tried it to see how you'd get into that position. No way that's "just leaning on a table". It actually hurts.
Its the artist forsaking comfort for a cute way to lean over a table. She looks like the way pin up girls pose.
The seasonal artwork has always been a bit more... interesting than the ingame models.
Just because we're commenting on her position, I think the tail pushing her clothing up makes her butt look higher and more unnatural than it is.. I think if you took out the ruffle in the clothes and the tail lifting it a bit that then it would look more normal (still a bit arch backed but nothing too weird- imo).
On top of having a tail and clothes pushing things out, we have it's the whole cat theme so it would make sense to build in a light arch in pose (since that's a stereotypical cat trademark, the whole curvy thing).

I’m very certain one or two people at SE has a thing for legs when doing artwork.
I’m okay with this.
