I feel you on this. The past few times I've had an update the download takes no time at all but then the copying stage takes forever. Shouldn't take this long for such a small update. Wish they would do something about it
I'm on PC but my SO is on a PS4 pro, it's bonkers how long it takes now! I'm guessing it's to do with moving everythin to the Sony side? I mean, the PS4 doesn't have the fastest processor, and the HDD is on the slow side...but this is something else entirely. My whole patch, download and install took about 14 seconds this morning..
I play on PC, but my sister's got some horror stories about the PS4, so my only guess is that it's something on Sony's end? :(
It took forever for even small Patches for me, ever since they changed how the Update System works. No reactions on German Forums, so another plea to fix this here.
It's always during the copying process, the one that even works when you turn internet off (tested it), so no connection issue.
Hells, a Patch for Dissidia NT that was more than five times the size of recent patches was done within a blink of the time FF XIV needs for the small Hotfix Patches.
Since they changed to this way even the smallest updates take forever. It downloads quick and even the install isn't too bad but for some reason when it is "copying update files" it takes a really long time. This last one took 30 minutes to copy. Not sure what's up with that.
I was wondering about this myself. Google didn't turn up much, so maybe someone out there has some info ? Kinda under the impression the copying process may be some sort of defrag or file check ? I think the wow launcher had something similar, haven't played that in years tho'.
Think it's to do with it being treated like a zip file. Downloads a smaller version of the patch and then copies/extracts" all the information in it before replacing the original smaller file with the actual patch. Suppose to save on bandwidth and also make it quicker for people with less good internet to download on PS4 since it's a smaller file and you don't need to be online for the copying stage so internet speed is irrelevant, at that point it's down to your PS4 processing speed which as someone said, isn't ideal these days. PS4 limitations
The PS4 processor isn't limiting it at all, otherwise every game on the system would be suffering from this and Sony's social media accounts would be crippled by raging users. The fact that it's also taking 25mins+ on PS4 Pro, means it has to have something to do with the actual install of the files or utterly atrocious coding. To put it into perspective; a clean install of FFXV is quicker downloading and applying it's monstrously huge patches.
The issue is definitely on the PS4 side, so nothing SE can do about it. This makes me quite fearful for something as large as an entire expansion.
It's frustrating. I already tried to contact Sony on this matter, but since it's only a known problem for FF XIV and no other game's updates, they told me it's nothing on their side. No one feels responsible.
It's not only a problem with this game, updating TESO takes even longer (the installed game site is considerably larger then FF14). Most likely due to the fact that the PS4 has to patch/recombine the game after download. This is not the fastest process.
Tip: put your PS4 into rest mode and this goes way faster.
Downloading during rest mode only works for PS Plus, though, so not a fix for everyone.
But the install/copying should work for non PS Plus accounts.
Other games it happens also but i really do not know why.
As for the change even if it takes longer to install i would rather at least be able to download the patches.
The old method of using the game launcher/updater was horrid, so many people would have issues downloading the files especially if you had to re-install the game.
(i lost a month sub time because of it)
The game updater is so very outdated
From what I have seen so far, it doesn't. PS4 non-plus folk have to manually check for the update while the system is on, turn off their TVs, and go do something else for 30 minutes to an hour for the patches.
I can also confirm that the same amount of data used to be quicker with the older method. The only upside is that we don't have to log into active accounts to update our games, with the current way on PS4s, and I'm not sure the loss of time is worth an aspect of patching that shouldn't even be a thing. At least this will allow me to download data whenever my sub isn't active, so I have less to install whenever I return to the game . . . assuming I'm not turning on my PS4 to do other things (like actually play a game).
edit: Wrong thread
Are you people all on normal HDD's?
I've got an SSD in my pro and I don't really see slow copying. (I do not play this game on PS4 though)
Following games:
Red Dead Redemption 2 +100 Gb size
Final Fantasy XV +100 Gb size
Destiny 2 +70 Gb size
Devil May Cry 5 +40 Gb size
Updates downloading and the copying have always been fast on those games I just summed up above. Even for Devil May Cry 5, this morning I downloaded the launch patch and the Live Action cutscenes which was almost 7Gb and it was downloaded in 4 minutes and the copying took less then a minute.
The default HDD inside PS4 Pro is pretty slow, but I can't really imagine that it is this slow. Maybe an issue with the game updates itself on the console side?
I never used my Pro with the traditional HDD, as soon as I got my Pro I removed the HDD and put the SSD inside and downloaded the latest USB install version of the PS4 OS.
Yeah i never swapped out to ssd as did not want to spend at the time. But the slow copying seems to be select games, other games go much faster
I'm surprised this is not being made into a bigger deal. I spent 30 mins on the copying files screen myself. This is unacceptable really. Just imagine the issues that'll be present on important patch days and half your playerbase is stuck on this screen.
Managed to get an answer on this in the german forums, only it doesn't really answer anything...
"We are currently using Sony's standardised procedure for Software Updates, changes upon the system files of FINAL FANTASY XIV are done via a routine from Sony. The game itself only writes profiles and settings onto the hard drive. Why this process now takes longer than usual, I can't answer."
Looks like nobody wants to be blame for this issue. Even if some other games are using the same system and have no problem at all. I guess we shouldn't expect any changes about this. :/
Are we really surprised though? They already showed little care about the servers issues (the ones about level3), they even blamed our own ISPs for this, so it's hard to be optimistic when it comes to that kind of feedback.
Definitely not a fan of this new updating system either, small patches take maybe 5 seconds to download and install but you're stuck there for ages waiting for the copying... Good luck with this system if you ever want to try progression raiding or when they add new housing etc. on PS4.
All large games that I own on the PS4 (Overwatch and ESO) show the same issues. This is really nothing SE can change. For an MMORG the patches are actually really small, other games download sizes are way worse.
As said before, wait till the download is finished and the game is in the "copying" phase and then put the console to rest mode. This even works without a PS+ subscription.
Rip ever getting a house on a big server.
I have this problem as well. I tried rebuilding my database but that didn't help. This only happens with FFXIV for me. I have also noticed that the updates won't download unless I free up a ridiculous amount of space on my PS4. This last patch was <1 GB but I had to free up almost 10 GB of space by deleting other games. I'm scared for what the expansion will require.
It's because the PS4 updater now verify files in the download process to prevent corruption. The old system didn't do that.
Let's hope they release the download for the expansion on PS4 well in advance like they did for the previous two patches. But I agree, these smaller patches are rediculous. There has been several instances now where I have kept people waiting in game for 30 minutes because of this new copying system.
What's the big deal on waiting a bit? Isn't that you patch the game every day.
Wjats going to happen when there's a limited housing patch? Or when raids are back in ShB and you're late to raid because this abnormally long patch is holding you back?
Hell, disregarding that why should I wake up at 3am expecting to play the new content from patch, but instead have to wait 30-40 mins for copying? It's pretty ignorant to not see a problem with this.
In my experience on PC, the update is usually available for download and install an hour or more before maintenance ends. Is it not the same thing with PS4?
Afaik, Downloading in Rest Mode only works for PS Plus users. Copying works for everyone though.
Patches are handled before the servers goes live, and you get noticed by lodestone news about them ready to download. You can have it all patched before server go live.
If you want be one of the "first" to login the game at any cost, it is yourproblemchoice.
