Hello everyone I'm new to the game just started last week to find a game to fill my mmo needs. I just have a question about for a new player what jobs I should go for being new to the game. I started out as a pugilist/monk and I have been looking at red mage since its a melee caster hybrid from what i gather from videos. I'm looking for something thats versatile to do content with. I came from Wow (like alot of people) and I played a druid mainly and I like the ability to do a lot of things at once but cant decide between the 2 jobs.

Jobs in this game don't quite fulfill multiple roles like hybrid classes in WoW, if that's what your asking. The only tanks are war, pld, and drk. The only healers are ast, whm, and sch. The only caster dps are blm, smn, and rdm. The only ranged physical are brd, and mch. The only melee dps are sam, mnk, drg, and nin. No one job is able to be 2 roles when it comes to dungeons and raiding.
Certain jobs do bring different utilities to the group however. Rdm for example has some nice healing abilities (not good enough to be an actual healer however) that might be able to save somebody, and they're useful in solo content/open world content. Rdm is also good at raising people in the middle of combat. Rdm in general is a good dps to chose for progressing content with your group due to their recovery utilities.
So basically to fulfill a different role, you simply level up a new job and change over to that job. If you wanted good mileage for this, you could level up arcanist first. Arcanist goes into summoner, and scholar, and the levels are shared. Meaning if you level up summoner to max level, you only need to go back and do the job quests for scholar and your scholar will be max level already. So you got to level up a caster dps job, and a healer job at the same time. And both of those jobs are quite good at their roles. -

There's not really a super-versatile class quite like the WoW Druid in this game. I'd say the closest thing is the Arcanist, the one class that has two jobs (one DPS, one healer).
Red Mage seems to come pretty close, too, but it's also sort of like the hero classes in WoW in that you have to get to a fairly high level to unlock it. -

Ok Red Mage ill give a shot since i'm leveling a Monk right now and its almost to lvl 35 but the positional skills in dungeons are killing me and i'm hoping it gets better as i hit max. The job is fun and i heard its damage is insane but just got to push through positional based skill requirements and its a learn as you go thing. I'm also a sucker for jobs that I don't see around much since i'm weird like that.
So for Red Mage is its damage ok in end game raids or does it get dropped straight after progression when everyone knows fights? I don't really know how the raid community is here since WoW was a bit different if you weren't planning to get world first no one really cares what you play. -

As long as you become proficient with the job you want to play, every job is more than capable of doing all content (although i'd stray away from mch for the time being. they're strong, but their rotation is a little too ping reliant and annoying)Quote:

I will also say its often easier to squeeze a red mage into a group than a monk at times, due to rdm being a caster. Its easy to bring 3 ranged/casters into a party and it not impact mechanics at all, but bringing 3 melee can sometimes be troublesome for certain fights if they all want to keep uptime and hit positionals. Also monk has to compete with dragoon and ninja for that melee slot, which is pretty rough competition. Ninja's trick attack adds substantial group damage, as it lines up with my job's burst windows, and dragoon gives the piercing vulnerability up for the bard, as well as battle litany and their eye tether dps boost. You can find groups easily enough with monk, but i believe you'll have a much easier time finding a group as a red mage. -

Down the road, it might be worth looking into Blue Mage (BLU) when it comes out in a little over a week. It is supposed to be the strange jack of all trades class that is designed to handle solo content VERY well. However you have to learn actions in a very unique way by watching the enemy use it then defeat the enemy. This class is considered to be about as hybrid as it can get. However from what I understand, it is capped at level 50 (which the cap will gradually increase in later patches), and it cannot do dungeon, trial, or raid content. We will learn more about it soon.

As a former WoW druid player who started a monk first and wanted to be a red mage for the same reasons as you, I ended up really enjoying the summoner and Scholar. After level 30 you can unlock both classes and I swap back and forth constantly. Between you and your pet and the 2 roles you can do pretty much everything, so I felt the same kind of satisfaction from it that I got on my druid before. I hope you are having fun with the game though regardless of what class you pick!

If you like melee DPS but don't want to deal with positionals, tanking is always an option. Often underappreciated but always needed, versatile in play and quick queue times to boot. You can easily level up a tank 2-3x faster than other jobs, and at peak tanks can output around 80% of a true dps job. Not to mention great survivability for solo quests. I'd recommend Warrior because I'm not biased at all... :D -

If I were you I would go with RDM. RDM has the most potent heal as a caster dps, and can dual cast raise which is extremely helpful in progression and in open world areas like Eureka.
But honestly if I were you I would try as many as you can and just choose the job(s) you like the most. -

I would like to point that the melee part of the RDM gameplay is not very developped.
You technically spend 90% of your time shooting spells, possibly at range. You only charge to unload 3 gcd once a minute.
Don't get me wrong, it is a fun job. But don't expect to do an actual melee caster hybrid, because you won't. You are a caster with a bit of melee fantasy. -

Yeah, am also a refugee from WOW (and in most ways FF14 is much better!!). I SO want to level as DRG as it's probably the best class I've ever played (along with Unholy DK's) but Red Mage is so easy to do the story quest with - excellent damage, movement and a self-heal that fits in with your rotation...

NIN is in the bottom 2 in terms of personal DPS... Competing with DRG. Outside of what I find stupid up-time mechanic in Ninki, NIN has a very fun rotation where you juggle and keep track of your GCDs, off GCD attacks and Ninjutsu.
Monk(MNK): In the top 4 DPS (going between 3rd and 4th based on fight and patch). Heavily dependent on positionals. MNK is about positionals and Greased Lightning and later on it is about how fast you can rebuild GL back. Has ok utility (Mantra is very good for progression). A good monk needs to pay attention to their enmity as their way of dropping it outside of the initial suppression from Diversion costs them DPS.
Samurai(SAM): Top 3 DPS (going between 3rd and 2nd, been 2nd all of this tier) and SE seems to want them to be always in the top 2. Least dependent on positionals. Absolutely selfish class. Least affected by using Limit Break but no Samurai in PF would use it sadly. They also bring slashing resist down, but again, one of 3 jobs that can.
Caster DPS:
They, well, cast! Out of the DPS jobs they have the best AoE, useful in dungeons but almost irrelevant in raids. They have comparatively limited mobility. Their limit break is big AoE of big damage (half what melee does).
Black Mage(BLM): The. Top. DPS. BLM is about landing as many <insert biggest explosion here> per cycle in its rotation, which in order to achieve so you have to juggle buff timers. Simple at its core, a bit harder in practice. It has good bursts of movement, but with a cooldown so you have to plan ahead (which is where its "difficulty" comes from). A good black mage will beat a similarly skilled SAM by a mile. But if you thought SAM was selfish, BLM makes it feel generous. There are 2 ways for this job to destroy the meters, being an absolute beast skill wise, or being catered to. Top parses usually involve both. This class is an absolute turret that does its best when stationary. It has good bursts of movement, but with a cooldown so you have to plan ahead (which is where its "difficulty" comes from).
Summoner(SMN): The best caster and, in my opinion of course, one of the best jobs out there with bard, scholar and paladin. Top 4 DPS (currently 3rd/4th in a competition with monks). Brings very good utility in the form of magic vulnerability debuff to increase raid magical damage or a reflect shield that reduces target's physical defense and doesn't reflect anymore :(.. And a battle raise (not as spammable as RDM) and has very good MP management. However this job comes with a high learning curve (once you learn it you pretty much cruise control it). As far as mobility is concerned.... It's not a concern for SMN due to the myriad of instant spells (comes with potency loss however). This job is good for progression AND farm/optimized runs. Oh it comes with the bonus of Scholar being leveled as well (arguably the strongest healer).
Red Mage(RDM): With the recent buffs, RDM is in the higher half of the DPS classes damage wise. It has decent mobility (based on how you define mobility mind you). Due to its intended innate DPS mechanic for its rotation, this class is capable of instant casting raises and can bring back multiple party members to life saving wipes. Making it a very good progression class. It has Embolden which is a physical party's, erm.... very good friend? lol
Physical Ranged DPS:
Nothing restricts these guys outside of range. Very mobile and as such are usually your go-to when you want a mechanic handled. They also fill a very good niche of high support. They are so useful that some argue that they do too much damage for what utility they bring. Their limit break is a line AoE.
Bard(BRD): The mandatory job. It is in the lower half the DPS numbers, but it's understandable considering it has the highest raid DPS contribution. Packed with abilities to restore everyone's mana and a myriad of defensive and offensive buffs, brad is "The" utility job you want in every group. For this job to perform well however, you NEED a DRG (giving you between 15~20% of your DPS) due to heavy reliance of a vulnerability debuff that you can't apply yourself, and you want a SCH.
Machinist(MCH): A decent bard replacement..... That is a lot harder to play (due to clunk and pink reliance). Has the same mana refreshing abilities but less quantity of defensive and offensive abilities, albeit more potent due to frequent use (shorter CD) or steady nature (i.e. damage% instead of crit chance). DPS-wise it falls right in the middle. Takes a lot of skill to play effectively due to aforementioned ping reliance and slightly complex rotation.
Please note that the gap between the highest DPS and lowest DPS in terms of personal DPS does NOT matter because of utility and/or other balancing factors that makes up for the gap. All DPS classes played well will meet DPS checks and do more than tanks in terms of DPS so do not worry about your job being in the lower half or even "bottom" DPS. NIN and DRG, while the lowest 2 DPS jobs, are almost a stable (some groups will ensure they have them more than tanks). Also in case you haven't noticed, there is some bias in my post. lol
I hope it helps you decide. If you want to try tanks or healers, I recommend: WAR > PLD > DRK for tanks and SCH > AST > WHM for healers. (I enjoy DRK and SCH most though).
