/vape emote

Edit: Thought that /vape would be a less harmful way of saying /smoke, but maybe /pipe would sound better?


So, I've noticed that the position holding a cigarillo is not exclusive to Yotsuyu. There are a few 'regular' npcs using that... So, I've thought why not have that as a emote for player chraracters?

As for smoking: I doubt they'll do anything with it because it can be viewed as promoting a bad/unhealthy habit.

I’d rather have the eat emote that Roegadyn over there is doing.

I don't see a /vape emote happening, but I can totally get behind an eating emote of some kind. That doesn't promote anything that would be considered bad. Everyone eats. Conversely, not everyone vapes or smokes.

I'm not opposed, I just think it's unlikely to happen. There's a bit of a difference when it comes to NPCs and player characters. There's a lot of factors that go into rating a game.

I have been clamouring for a /smoke emote for a loooooooooooooooong time. There are a lot of npcs that Drink and Smoke, including Drunk Ass Moogles... We also Kill people in game... so the "they don't want to promote bad habits" argument is kind of silly. If anything it should be a cash shop emote, so people who REALLY want it can just pay for it, and others don't have to, kind of like in the real world where people who want to smoke pay for them. I doubt it will ever happen which is kind of sad, especially seeing that most of the devs smoke themselves.

I mean by that logic, not everyone dances or enjoys dancing, yet we have how many dozen dance emotes?

But on the original point, allowing a smoke emote likely would make a change to the game's rating in some countries, which is probably not something Square wants.

Yep, exactly.

I really want that pipe emote idle for my characters.
They could handwave it away with saying there's a smokeable substance in eorzea that doesn't have any horrible side effects.
Or give it some kind of bubble particle effect.

I don't think there's any particular problem with the "promoting bad habits" idea. The game is rated T for, among other things, "use of alcohol/tobacco".

Also, you can buy an ashtray for your house, and it has a lit cigar sitting in it.

Keep in mind that the "T rating" is for Teens, meaning people age 13 and up who would be playing XIV possibly, and thus not even be of the proper age in real life to do so themselves. Having NPC characters using alcohol and tobacco that you'll likely forget that they even existed as you're going through the MSQ is a farcry from actually promoting your characters in doing it, not to mention making it seem like the habit is a cool thing to do towards those easily susceptible to peer pressure.

The T Rating stands for "may contain cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language and/or minimal use of suggestive themes". The key phrase being "minimal use".

And honestly, we don't need an emote for characters to smoke and stand around Limsa for 6 hours polluting the air.

To each their own but I don't think they'll ever do this. Both Vaping and Smoking are detrimental to both the health of the user and those around them (popcorn lung for vaping). As someone who lost a loved one to cancer I would rather they not let players have this emote. NPC's doing something harmful to themselves is one thing but letting players do said action would likely bump the rating up to M.

I mean, they've already got an ashtray with a lit cigar as a housing item, as well as the Oriental Pipe Box. Hell, in a Carpenter quest you craft an Oriental Pipe Box for a merchant in Kugane, and the whole quest is basically filled with people wanking about how great smoking is.

Personally, I don't particularly want an emote for this, but I'm not seeing a reason not to allow it. Maybe they could just put it on the Mogstation and let people who really want it cough up a few bucks for it.

This should also help with concerns about kids pretending to smoke in-game, considering they're not likely to have credit cards to use for buying Mogstation stuff.

I'm not normally pro-Mogstation, but that sounds like a perfect solution if people desperately want a smoking emote.

No thanks I'd perfer a delete thread emote myself.

Vaping? No. Smoking a cigar/pipe? Sure, I have it in canon that my character is a smoker and usually uses cigars/pipes.

While i totally despise smoking myself, id still say we need that emote, together with an /meditate /eat /drink /sharpweapon / stuff that runs un endless loops so we can let them run when afk or even rp... its kinda sad to stand or sit like a stone statue. Its what i love on lala, they got those two /sit where they move a bit...

Just because the rating says "use of alcohol and tobacco" doesn't mean that any use is covered - only a degree consistent with what the rating rules say can be shown in a T-rated game.

Look at all the other things listed there. "Blood" - but what's shown is very limited. "Language" - but not the 'worst words' or extremely frequently. And so on. Subtle things, not explicit, and generally not being done by your character.

You seemed to have missed the point entirely and literally are taking the words of a rating system too liberal in favor of thinking you've won the argument somehow, you haven't. A "Teen Rating" as Iscah has pointed out, does not mean that everything is fair game and fair use under that rating towards a larger degree. Just because it says "use of tobacco and alcohol" does not mean that we can suddenly have our characters standing around Limsa promoting unhealthy and addictive habits suggested by the players themselves.

I mean, if you want the game to be bumped up towards a mature or adult rating, with a possible mess in regards towards the marketing and public relations that it has with several other countries who may not agree either, that's the way to do it.

As to the comment of it affecting the ratings in other countries. Simple solution, don't release that emote in that/those country/ies.

Honestly I think the current ESRB is currently off in terms of use. I would say it's Tobacco Reference, not Use of Tobacco.

Just because the rating states Alcohol and Tobacco, doesn't mean all applications of it will be allowed. It also states Blood and Violence. Should the game start having copious ammounts of blood and gory deaths?

Pretty sure they can't country-lock emotes on a version of the game that goes for every country except China and Korea. Maybe putting it on Mogstation but that would be another can of worms.

Who cares if you dont smoke, I dont but it might be cool to stand somewhere smoking a pipe. Its just an emote, this world to becoming so sensitive to everything.

Also dont forget all the numerous things our WoL does throughout their journey. I remember drugging moggles in their quest chain like I was Bill Cosby.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I'm not opposed to the idea. They could add it and I wouldn't really bat an eye. I'm just not sure how they'd handle it in every country that allows people to play this game.

That's a bad comparison as there is a different rating for excessive amount of blood. There's Blood and then there's also Blood and Gore, which excessive amounts would fall under the Blood and Gore category.

In the ESRB rating system there is Alcohol/Drug/Tobacco Reference and then there is Alcohol/Drug/Tobacco Use. The game is already under the 'Use' category for Alcohol and Tobacco.

However, if they changed it to heavier Drug/Alcohol use I could see it possibly changing, but not general smoking/vaping. The game's rating isn't going to shift from T to M just because of smoking as people are trying to imply. At least not here in the US.

Sitting Emotes based on class weapons (think samurai sitting cross legged inspecting their katana and cleaning it, or a Summoner/Scholar with their book out reading it in a sitting position)
Eating Food emote while sitting
Drinking Tea/Beverage emote while sitting
emote for smoking
a doze/sleep emote that works outside of a bed
a chair sitting emote that isnt specific to seats but can be done for use on any ledge
Both male and female weapon variations for a character when posing with weapon drawn
a yawn emote
a rude emote
a drunk emote
a hold pose option so certain emotes remain indefinitely in a certain position if we want them too

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, but itd be nice to have some of these

Rating argument is moot, there are other games rated T where the player can smoke. Lord of the Rings online is probably the closest comparison to this game, that has a smoking emote.

I personally would like to have a /smoke or /pipe emote, especially if it was persistent. Would be good to use for when I go on smoke breaks :P

Vaping is incredibly damaging to your health. The chemicals used in it cause popcorn lung, which currently has no cure.

Fu### ratings and all im gettin sick of ppl telling my whats ok to do or not, of "pretecting" ppl just to be sure...

i hate smoking, i hate drinking alcohol, still id like such emotes.
