Unexpected error, exiting FFXIV

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could please help me find a solution to the problem that I am experiencing.

I have a new desktop after upgrading from a laptop. Since installing FFXIV on my new desktop, I just can't play it. I can run the game and get on it for a couple of minutes before it crashes and a pop up will tell me that "An unexpected error has occurred, exiting Final Fantasy XIV", this is then followed by a number of lines of "ffxiv_dx11.exe+" (with a bunch of random numbers after the plus".

I have tried reinstalling the game, although when I do reinstall it I normally get an error part way through the installation telling me there's been a problem reinstalling and to relaunch the launcher.

My drivers are all updates, so is my Windows. I have tried to delete the "my games" folder of final fantasy with no luck.

I've also tried to look up solutions but can't really find many solutions to the problem, and am a bit bummed that I have this new desktop and can't play the game.

Any help?

Based on the information provided, it appears you are experiencing an issue with DirectX 11. Other than deleting the folders and making sure the drivers were up to date, have you tried anything else to solve the problem?

Also, please try the following:

-Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. For Windows
-Try switching to DirectX 9 by selecting the ‘Config’ button on the launcher

I have also done a complete reboot of my computer to reinstall Windows but this didn't solve my issues with the game.

Running in DX9 made no difference either in face the problem seems to be getting worse now, last time I tried to log into the game I couldn't get past the main menu screen without the error popping up where as before it would be a few minutes in or up to 10/15 minutes later.

Sorry I don't know how I would find a system report.

The issue has been going on since I installed FF onto my new desktop on Saturday. I didn't have the problem when I played FF on my laptop.

Thank you for the information.

On your system report I notice the game was installed on the D drive. Have you tried installing it on the C drive? Doing so may increase stability with the game. I am also going to suggest changing the compatibility to Windows 7/8 mode*.

*To change compatibility mode, right click on the exe file (Default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn\boot\ffxivboot.exe), right click it and select ‘Properties.’ Select the ‘Compatibility’ tab and select an earlier version of Windows (most likely 8 or 7).

I have been getting this too.

I have been getting this error too except that it has nvwgf2umx.dll+B89C38 and a lot more lines. I have tried updating DirectX, reinstalling the game, updating windows, updating drivers, doing a clean reinstall of drivers. I have been getting it for the last few days now. PLEASE HELP!

I think it could be something to do with Windows game optimizations. Had he same issue on one of my laptops.

If you run the game in borderless windowed mode then it can end up being a borderless window inside another borderless window created by Windows which then creates issues and problems.

Where as if you run the game full screen Windows still seems to put it in a borderless window.

I found a few threads about this occurring on steam forums though many were related to different games. But you might have some luck if you go Into the final fantasy xiv folder. Right click the game open it's properties and disable Windows game optimizations.

Thanks for the reply Dzian, unfortunately that didn't make a change either. My game boots up and dies right before my characters lode in on the character selection screen. Already tried to delete local character files since that's where it always crashes but no luck with that either.

Are you getting the same error message as everyone else? Or does it differ at all? Did you try running the game in DirectX 9 mode? Does this change anything?

When did this issue start happening for you? Did anything change/update on your PC that coincides with it?

Additionally, can you provide a System Report as well?

Thanks Einmimiria,

The problem started for me after the update on Nov. 26. I didn't change anything on my computer, or make any updates. I did run it in DirectX 9 mode, reinstalled my game, and rebooted my computer a few times for good measure. My error happens at the character selection screen before the characters visibly load in. I did delete my local character data but there wasn't a change so I just put them back. Below is my error codes & System Report. Thanks for the help o/

Hi Dynratygus,
I updated my Windows 10 drivers, and then again recently as another update dropped from Microsoft. Sadly, it made no changes at all.
Did you mean another driver? Which ones do you recommend I update/reinstall? I opened up Skyrim out of curiosity if my DirectX is totally bad, but other games seem to work just fine.

Any recommendations on how to fix this would be great, I feel scared to mess with things willy nilly but I feel sad that I'm missing out on FFXIV excitement. Thanks in advance

I'd suggest updating your graphics card driver. They don't look too out of date, but Final Fantasy XIV continuously updates and will take advantage of newer drivers. The ones you have shouldn't take issue with games that are more than a few months old. You can find your specific driver version here: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Good afternoon flinchy and thank you for the update!

I apologize for the delay in my response. Have you tried rolling back the drivers update or changing the compatibility mode? If not, please try the following:

- Try switching to DirectX 9 by selecting the ‘Config’ button on the launcher
-Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything
- Right click on the FFXIV launcher icon and select "Properties"
- Go to the "Compatibility" tab, and change the compatibility mode to "Windows 7"

Hello thanks for getting back to me

I did try switching to DirectX 9 but it made no difference. However, after updating my Windows driver and graphics card drivers (which didn't work), I re-installed my game for the third time. Finally got it to work again! Maybe it needed that for the driver updates to make a difference? Don't know an advanced amount about computers, but hopefully that helps you in your future with advice for others as this is a very frustrating problem. Thank you for all of your assistance, happy it got figured out in the end.
