I know for Heavensward 3.5 was the last patch before Stormblood, will SB follow the same or will there be more?
2.5 was the last large patch of ARR just like 3.5 was the last large patch of HW. I would be surprised it 4.5 was not the last large patch of SB.
4.55 probably will be. The .5 patch was split into two halves before with ARR and HW too.
There was talk that SB might go beyond to 4.6 or 4.7 way back at launch...
It all depends on how they want to space out the rest of the content.
Right now we can assume there will at least be:
a 3rd and final installment of the Return to Ivalice story a 3rd 24-man instance.
The Four Lords storyline has one more lord, Seiryu, we will most likely fight, plus the possibility that we might face Kohryu if things go awry. If they go the latter route then Seiryu would most likely be a dungeon boss (like Genbu) and Kohryu would be the final trial in that series.
United SB Beast Tribe story/quests
MSQ story wrap-up and tie-in to 5.0
Other things still on the table:
I've read speculation that Pyros might not be the final part of Eureka... we'll know more after 4.55 drops. In the previous expansion HW, the relics final step was equal in ilvl to the 8-man raid weapons. So if the Relic doesn't get to i405 in Pyros, it's possible that a final area will be implemented for the final step...
It's doubtful to me that we'll get a "victory lap" of content outside of Eureka for the 4.0 Relic, but I guess they could do a Victory Lap that requires you to go through all the Eureka areas and kill specific FATE targets with your 4.0 Relic equipped... /pray for those that have to defeat Cassie... If such a Victory Lap is a step in the 4.0 relic, then a 4th part of Eureka would be unlikely.
A 3rd Ultimate fight is a possibility as well...
The Seiryu/Kohryu part of the Four Lords kind of mucks it all up. So far in we've gotten only ONE new dungeon on odd patches and TWO new dungeons on even patches. If Seiryu is a dungeon boss, then that would need to be the ONE dungeon for 4.5... and then Kohryu would be the trial. Then Return to Ivalice and United Beast Tribe get rolled in for extra content...
This doesn't leave space for MSQ wrap-up and tie-in to 5.0... since that will most likely be a dungeon as well. It also doesn't leave room for a 3rd Ultimate to be slotted in, if that is actually in the works.
Of course, Seiryu could just be the final trial and Kohryu doesn't get fought, which leaves the 4.5 dungeon free for MSQ.
Per the official blog: "These can only be used in Pyros and the next iteration of Eureka, but you'll be able to use them as soon as you enter Pyros!"
https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/pr/blog/
Okay then... if there is a 4th installment of Eureka I can totally see 4.6 becoming a thing.
EDIT:
And ugh... I just got finished reading that full blog post and it looks like the Logos system is going to murder my inventory space...
The tradeoff is that I'll be able to extract some dank Mnemes!
why? pyros is 4.4, the last isntallment will be 4.5(.55555)
The last 2 Eureka's (including Pyros) have been released on X.X5 patches - i'd assume the last one would be on 4.55, as part of their spacing the content out they're trying this xpac, as previously the .55 patch has added little other than a bit of story to setup the next xpac and making everything getable with tomestones to gear everyone up. With that in mind, I wouldn't be suprised if they tweaked xp rates in Eureka or whatever when .55 comes out to get people trying it while waiting.
yoshida said on a interview on the past what there might not be a third ultimate

――ちなみに、現在は奇数パッチごとに"絶"が追加されていますが、今後もその間隔でリリースしていくのでしょうか?
Interviewer: At the moment, we are getting an ultimate fight "every odd patch", but is this going to continue in the future?
Yoshida: We were originally planning to have an ultimate fight for each "odd numbered patch", but after observing the reactions from the community, there were a lot of opinions saying "Having an ultimate fight every 2 patches is too rough", so we changed our minds and thought 2 ultimate fights per expansion might be better, so i think the ultimate series will be on hiatus for now.
ahhhh... I didn't see that article before.
Okay then to revise what's on the table...
Return to Ivalice Part 3
Four Lords: Seiryu (and possibly Kohryu)
Eureka Part 4
United SB Beast Tribe Story/Quests
MSQ wrap-up and tie-in to 5.0
Still seems bloated for a single number patch to me, but I suppose it can all fit into their formula.
If Ultimate is removed, then I guess they could throw in TWO dungeons in 4.5, one for Four Lords and one for MSQ, and that would let them tidy up both storylines. Perhaps the second dungeon, which I would assume to be the MSQ related one, could even be delayed to 4.55 so it works better for the tie-in to 5.0 storyline.
that stuff sounds normal amount of stuff on a single patch
the united beast tribe quest is just a bit of text and maibe a instance battle and probably some new items to buy from the vendors of each tribe, which is not that much
24 man raid, 1 trial and msq are more of the standar stuff what always happens(and on the case of 24 man raid is always on even patches)
then there is eureka, what is not gonna be on 4.5, but on 4.55, wich gives them more time to work on it
They were split in two halves in the sense that both .5 and .55 patches contained MSQ content, when the other .55 patches don't.
Alliance raid, Seiryu trial, MSQ content in 4.5.
Eureka, Kohryu trial, MSQ content in 4.55
Beast tribe stuff in either. Doesn't seem all that out of the ordinary to me. In fact, they wouldn't really have all that much for a 4.6 patch.
I'm almost convinced that Seiryu will be a personal trial or dungeon boss, and Kohryu will be the 8-man. I really don't expect them to give us 8 trials/trial sets/trial mounts when we had 7 in HW. Other than that, I agree that Ivalice #3, MSQ, 1-3 dungeons (MSQ, Seiryu(?), HM(?)), United tribes, and Eureka #4 all make sense for a single patch, especially a last patch of the cycle. After all, 4.3 had Heaven on High, Anemos, UWU, Swallow's Compass, Tsukuyomi, and Namazu.
You say bloated, but it looks almost normal to me, considering the amount of content we used to get per patch back when we used to get three dungeons per, and no Diadem-esque anything. All that's missing is an amusing trial tied to the Hildebrand story, really. *Stares at Yojimbo*
So current expectations I have past what has been shown for 4.5 so far.
Seiryu and possibly kohryu from the lords quest line. implementation of this is up to question since genbu was actually a duty boss
3rd installment of ivalice
A primal battle with Amaterasu, that would be the 3rd of the big 3 in Japanese mythology as we have already had Tsukiyomi and Susano-o
Closure of the hildebrand quest line
ATM I don't have expectations of an eureka zone after pyros but it is possible given that eureka itself was delayed which is probably the main cause of the relics being a bit behind other content in regards to ilvl currently.
There is currently only 2 duties in the current expert roulette so we should be due 1 more at this tier. Given the ilvl of the gear in the current tier we could easily have 1 more tier of tomestones after this.
I highly doubt we're going to get another non-4 lords trial. We might, they could always surprise me, but what we have with Tsuku matches so far with HW, where Nidhogg was the final MSQ trial, halfway through post 3.0, and the rest of it was the Warring Triad. I do agree Amaterasu would be nice - she is the third to Susano-o & Tsukuyomi, as you say (what I wouldn't give to see primals for Izanagi and Izanami!) but that puts us at 8 trials at the very least since there's no way they'd make Kohryu, the "big bad" that was held by the Four Lords, a personal trial or a dungeon boss. (Now that I think about it, since we succeeded with Genbu, Byakko, and Suzaku, it's quite possible that Seiryu will be a "no-go" and not even come down to a fight, which would be why we had to fight Kohryu, else we would have succeeded in taming their ara-mitama but failed in the final mission, which would be a bummer. Plus, it would get Seiryu "out of the way".)
They've also said they're "done" with Doma in the MSQ (although it will remain in the form of Hien & Yugiri, ofc, just not be focused on it.) I think it would be very odd to have Amaterasu as a primal when we're dealing with Gyr Abania, plus I can't really imagine how she would fit in with the current predicament the scions are in.
I'd be happy to be surprised, I'm a massive geek when it comes down to eastern mythology, but I really can't see it fitting in.
I hope so. SB has been a dud. They invested too much in Eureka. I hope it doesn't get drawn out even more.
SB IMO is the worst expansion. Eureka is worst than diadem. And HoH isn’t impressive. Only good part is MSQ which I hope that is the only thing that 4.55 brings
I could see that, but I don't expect there to be an extreme version. If anything it's going to be in the Hildibrand storyline, a la Greg. They didn't give us one in the HW Hildi, did they? I don't remember if we even had to fight those Knights, and if we did it wasn't group. So it'd be nice if they brought that back. But as for a "primal"/extreme, I highly doubt it.
Actually if Yojimbo is already planned as an "outside of normal schedule" trial, doesn't that make it more likely that the place it would get "randomly dropped into" would be the Hildibrand plotline that could do with a trial but wouldn't normally be given one?
Sadly, this is not a possibility. Developers already confirmed that there would be no third Ultimate fight in Stormblood. Which is why a lot of raiders are clearing Alphascape once or twice for the clears and then unsubscribing until the next expansion, because there’s nothing to put the gear from it to use.
Sadly, we didnt get any Hilli-trials after the last battle with Greg - apparently because people were to upset that they were "forced" to do the Hilli-quests to re-unloch their trials-roulette. And instead of changing how the roulettes work they just took the trials out of the Hilli-questline.
...I cant remember if we ever had to fight anyone during the HW-questline now - it might very well be that it was purely narrative.
4.5 might be the last.
All that's really left in terms of content is the 3rd 24-man and the 3rd trial in the four lords story line (Seiryu)... And more Eureka for the relic...
But in terms of story, I wonder if they'll be able to tie up the trials and the MSQ with just one patch...
I read there might be a 4.6 patch from a few interviews quite a while back. But it is a tentative estimate though considering the interviews were done during the beginning of Stormblood.
It's also my understanding from folks who were around at the beginning of HW too that the "more patches beyond .5" was just a running joke, although I'm not sure myself.
I kinda doubt that we go beyond 4.5. If they dont just suddenly have a secret big update for further patches, we would have main patches with even less to do, because as far as we know the Ivalice raid will be done with 4.5. Omega is also done, raiders dont get another Ultimate and the only other content would be Eureka, that quite some probably wont even play. So even if we do get beyond 4.5 I am not sure if those would be great patches.
This patch cycle is quite comfortable enough for them, and I don't think they have a big surprise for us up until 5.0. And all those 4.6 4.7 mentions were kinda presented not too seriously, more like a joke.
I'd also bet on 4.5 : MSQ with one dungeon / last four lords trial / 24 Raid (Giruvegan pls), and 4.55 in late March / April for the last Eureka. Maybe a 4.56 for a few Main Scenario Quests if they are staggered after Eureka, plus the echo on Alphascape savage. Nothing more, nothing less.
They have been quite clear that there won't be a third ultimate for Stormblood. I don't believe in two trials either. The most possible "suprise" would be a second dungeon coming later in the patch, but there is not so much point in doing so.
