I have a few questions about things from ARR - two major ones, and a few minor ones.
1. Lv44 MSQ: Lady of the Vortex
"That light - it was you, wasn't it?"
As a non-legacy player, the scene with Cid on the airship is very puzzling. I'm not sure if it makes different sense to someone who was there originally, but it seems to imply that the Warrior of Light is "not human" and somehow manifested to Cid in a blaze of light five years ago... is that the intended reading of the scene? What happened originally?

2. Lv50 Dragoon quest
As I wrote in the 'lore questions for Fan Fest' thread, the ending of the Dragoon quest storyline was very strange.
We see Estinien possessed by Nidhogg, and then our character somehow manifests as the legendary dragoon Haldrath. At the end of the fight, Estinien is never shown to return to his senses, but as the in-game journal describes it, "the being of darkness vanishes from sight, taking the fallen dragoon with it".
If you talk to Alberic afterwards, it seems that Estinien has vanished entirely and nobody knows where he's gone. But then he turns up again in his first MSQ-appearance like nothing has happened. So...
a. What actually happened to Estinien at that point?
b. What was happening when we transformed into Haldrath? (And in light of later revelations, was it the spirit of the real Haldrath or the legendary one?) Did we somehow spontaneously summon him, in the vein of Ysayle summoning Shiva, or is something else going on?
It also seems ironic that he's so antagonistic to Ysayle throughout Heavensward when the climax of this story actually has him pray to Nidhogg for strength. (He actually is a heretic by this - though not in his right mind at the time - not that either we or Alberic would let anyone know that happened!) Unless... he's been mind-wiped when Nidhogg snatches him at the end? But then again, if you've completed that quest it affects his MSQ dialogue, which suggests he remembers it.
Hopefully we'll get an answer from the lore team, but does anyone else have thoughts on it?

3. Mordyn at the Seventh Sage says that Carvallain "watches over the business [of the Kraken's Arms] 'imself, when 'e's not busy watchin' over 'is lovely little Elezen bride".
Given the complete lack of any other reference to her, and the running thread of Carvallain and Rhoswen as a not-quite-couple... is this some kind of code for something else (a 1.0 reference new players won't get?), something lost in translation, or is he really actually married?
Edit (9 Jan 2022): Having come back to this thread years later, I can now note that this script translation was an error that has since been resolved and corrected. Mordyn now says that Carvallain watches over his crew.

4. Outside Mih Khetto's Amphitheatre there's a small merchant stall run by a man called Mayeulons. If you talk to him he just says "We're closed. Come back later. Would that every day could be a festival..."
I first assumed he must do something during seasonal events, but any time I've checked he's still just saying that. Is he there for another reason?

(Seen just before handing in the "sign up for a GC" MSQ quest. I realise there probably isn't an 'answer' for this. I'm guessing it's some kind of old weapon model (THM staff?) that eventually got reused for the Gnath, but it's still a bit odd, since Urianger is normally an arcanist.)

1. The Echo vision with Cid remains unclear. Implicitly, the Warrior of Light was able to reach back through time to give Cid his trademark goggles - though if I recall correctly it was more along the lines of "speaking with Cid's soul" through the Echo back then, which is possible without some sort of time travel (such as Alexander) since it's essentially a dive into someone's memories. (Or: the Echo literally lets you observe with the memories of others, but they usually remain none the wiser unless they also have the Echo. Cid just happens to be astute enough to have figured it out, though it still doesn't explain the goggles.)
2a. Estinien explains that he struggled with Nidhogg for control after his defeat in the DRG 50 quest, but eventually won out.
2b. My reading of that scene is that the Echo was used to reach back into Nidhogg's memories and conjure an image of Haldrath - the real one - however briefly. It's been a long while but if I recall they both wore silver Drachen armor in the brief glimpses we get of them (one during the DRG 50 quest, one after defeating Nidhogg in the Aery).
As for the heresy... most likely he would be forgiven on account of his status and the fact he was obviously not in his right mind.
3. Probably just a joke referring to Rhoswen? Not sure.
4. Most likely just meant to clue people in to the fact that Mih Khetto's Amphitheatre is host to a good number of seasonal events (I took a break from leveling my Dark Iron Dwarf on WoW and jumped right over there to do the event - sure enough, that's where it was).
5. Not ringing any bells, so I'd need a sound bite to try to tell.
6. That's probably because, as I recall, Arcanists were intended to be a part of 1.x (1.0?) albeit using mechanical / clockwork magic staves instead of the grimoires they and their branching Jobs now wield. Urianger still having one in some early 2.0 scenes is probably just an oversight. -

6. Archanist's original weapons were not books. They were this weird staff/chronometer thing Arachnists wear on their backs. The first time Urianger pops up in the 1.0 MSQ, he has one of those. So do all the Archanists in Limsa Lominsa at the assesor's office. It's probably a hold-over that was later fixed in-game.
1. This is even more confusing then you think it is. The flashback is of the time when Cid initially escaped the Garlean some 15 years before 2.0. And the WoL somehow showed up and gave Cid his goggles thing. He's wearing them in 1.0. So yeah. What is further complicated matters is that if your character was around in 1.0, Cid doesn't have the amnesia regarding you that everyone else does. So not only does he somehow recognize that you're the one who gave him his goggles 15 years ago, he also realizes your the WoL who defeated Nael and participated in all the 1.0 events. How the WoL did this has never been touched on... yet... -

That was my best guess, but it doesn't really work - Mordyn specifically says Elezen bride, ie. the bride is an Elezen (at least that's how I would understand that phrasing). Unless that was ambiguous Japanese wording translated the wrong way, it can't refer to Rhoswen.Quote:

#1 The Cid scene is likely much less confusing than people are making it out to be. Think a little less Western for a moment, first. Imagine a culture where "mind" and "soul" are seen as so intrinsically connected that "spirit" is a synonym for both; memory and soul are deeply entwined from this perspective.
The Warrior of Light's Echo resonates with his soul and helps give it strength and put it back in order. Typically the Echo is triggered by someone else having a strong memory; the Echo user is just brought along for the ride for that moment and they share a reverie. The Echo's target often experiences it as staring off into space and getting distracted before snapping out of it (though, rarely, a learned someone will notice you're in their head with them, like Raya-O-Senna once upon a time).
However, Cid didn't have the memories, either, until you put them back in order. It makes it even more likely he'd notice the effects of the Echo somehow. The scene begins with Cid asking Where did I get these goggles? and ends with You handing him his (metaphorical) goggles. His memories.
In all likelihood it's just a visual metaphor as Cid experienced it. Perhaps his third eye really did give him some kind of weird hallucination as you did it, but at the very least I'm fairly confident in the metaphor part.
#2 Recall that Ishgard's scriptures make reference to dragons being able to warp and control the minds of man? They present this as the origin of all heretics, and that's shown to likely not be true, but neither is it entirely a lie. King Thordan I himself was thrown into a ravine by a man overcome by Nidhogg's will. Estinien had a moment of weakness and doubt and the Eye seized on it. If I remember right, that was where the whole ruse started - Estinien's rage was being twisted into a desire to take revenge on Alberic for his part in Ferndale's destruction. Notice that Estinien even cries out with a desire to drink dragon's blood and gain the ability to tear at his enemies with fang and claw. He just lost the mental battle for a moment.
The Haldrath part is a little wonky. In English, Alberic speaks of Haldrath's armor being inside the crystal, as if you have Haldrath's old soul crystal, which would explain you evoking his memory and shade from it, if true, but it doesn't fully line up. German, for example, has Alberic suggest that your strength and charisma have unlocked some secret of the Celestial Dragons that only Haldrath previously understood, and that this evoked Haldrath's memory from Nidhogg's influence over Estinien. (That is the darkness spoken of; Nidhogg was aspected towards lower-case darkness.)
#3 Rhoswen is a Hyur and none of the other languages mention anything about it so I have no idea. Every language but English just says Carvallain's out on the terrace.

Still, with no other context, it's a little hard to make sense of. I understand the WoL would be physically present in Echo visions in 1.0? But I don't think any other 2.0 scenes do that. I understand what was going on during the battle (except the Haldrath bit anyway), my issue is what we're shown/told of what happens after. It would make a lot more sense if we'd seen Estinien regain control of himself after we defeated him. Instead we see him snatched away by Nidhogg, and then Alberic tells us that he's missing and nobody has seen him since. And then he just turns up again in the MSQ like none of it ever happened - and for all I know, Nidhogg might still be controlling him. Well, that does sound a lot more intriguing than the failed-romantic-comedy duo we've currently got! (Even if they are ever so fun to watch in that mode....)
I wonder if they could get brought back into a more serious storyline at some point? The Ninja questline continues to involve the Rogues' Guild (and Carvallain even inadvertently kicked off the Stormblood chapter of the story by rescuing some "Doman refugees" who turned out to be the villains of the piece). Or a potential hook into the Machinist story via Rostnsthal? Which leads back to Ishgard... though come to think of it, neither Carvallain or Rostnsthal want to be in the location where the other is.
But... all the plot with Carvallain and Rhoswen is going on in 1562? and seeming much the same as they are in the current time? Are they both already captains? Because it occurred to me previously (when trying to plot Carvallain's timeline relative to other known dates) that he'd only be 19 at that time, barely a grown adult by Elezen standards. Which just seems an odd idea - not that he wouldn't be capable of being a mature adult mentally before that point, compare Alphinaud - but still a bit strange. And given all the other weirdness going on with his family's timeline..... well.
I did wonder previously if his stated age of 34 could be a bit lower than it should be - say if he was actually 19, not 14 when he ran away, but since Elezen still look young at that stage, he lied about his age? (Even moreso if he's trying to distance himself from his actual identity and doesn't want anyone hearing that a 19-year-old noble is missing and putting two and two together...)
Still not enough to wrangle the timeline into making sense with everything said in the AST storyline, but it could just about scrape everything into a functional timeline if they wanted to maintain Jannequinard being two years younger than Carvallain - making them 39 and 37 would just work for the twenty-years-ago AST plot, making Janne 17 instead of 12. Kind of what the lorebook tried to do by saying it happened 15 years ago, but working in the opposite direction.

Hey, a player speculating is a player engaged. If something is genuinely askew from that the writers seem to aspire to, harp on it until they fix it. What's the worst that could happen? They like writing themselves out of corners. Inspire them.
If you go by that timeline Carvallain goes from kidnap victim to CAPTAIN OF THE KRAKEN'S ARMS in a very short period of time, from a very young age.
Convince them to write that story. That's probably a great story. -

I don't entriely mind what story they write (though preferably with minimal rewriting of anything already stated in game) as long as we end up with one single timeline, and not multiple conflicting versions of the facts. And make sure anyone writing or translating any plots referencing it have used the correct version of the information.
(It's feeling a bit like the story-equivalent of Schrodinger's Cat at the moment - simultaneously in two different states depending on which version they'll make canon.)
Also I do have to wonder if somewhere along the process of rebuilding the story for 2.0, some pre-existing character profiles failed to get updated for the five-year timeskip? If Carvallain was 34 in 1.0 and 24 in the flashbacks, that might make more sense. (Likewise for Rhoswen, whose given age is 36 - again it seems odd that both pirate captains were so young in the early story, but 24 and 26 could be more probable.) -

I guess if anyone is going to still be equipped with an outdated, obscure weapon, Urianger is probably the one character where it actually makes sense!
(In a similar vein, it occurred to me a while ago that it seems rather appropriate that his alternate costume choice of the Orthodox mage's robes seems to be thousand-year-old Dravanian clothing - at least judging by the fending version being the uniform of Haldrath's knights.) -

I'd have to go digging for the original source, but re: Cid's memories cutscene, I think I read an interview with Koji or someone else on the lore team that explained this scene is semi-metaphorical. It's not giving you an organised, literal peek into what happened in order; it's you travelling with him through the wreckage, like Anonymoose said, and explicit memories are woven into emotional impressions and the process of suturing things back together.

Thinking over Carvallain and Rhoswen - and particularly what Moose said about them in 1.0, where it sounds like they were "equal opposites" in a serious story... I feel like their relationship in the game now is rather unbalanced. Carvallain gets mostly played as a serious, competent character - from the early-game 'orientation' quest that sets up your understanding of how the
piratesprivateers of Limsa operate, to being involved in the Stormblood MSQ.
Rhoswen, on the other hand, gets no equivalent "solo" involvement in the MSQ, and seems to be played as incompetent - her early-game quest is a "how to emote" tutorial with dialogue that indicates she's going about her raiding with a terrible strategy, until you somehow inspire her to a better idea. And she seems to bring up (usually complaining about) Carvallain at every turn, while he doesn't usually mention her at all if she isn't there.
Perhaps it's meant to be a contrast in how they handle things - measured and thought-out versus impulsive and passionate - but it comes out very lopsided in the impression I get of the characters just from playing the game as it exists now. -

Rhoswen's business gets some more focus in the Lvl 50-60 Cullinarian quests. I do think she and Carvallain are supposed to represent how Limsa Lominsa has changed over the years and how that has effected different types of people in Limsa. Carvallain with his Ishgardian informed upbringing is doing much better under the regulations and limits Limsa now has. Rhoswen with her less structured crew and way of handling things is doing fine, but not outstanding. However, both of them are better off then some of the other pirates we meet in the Arcainist and Rouge's Guild quests.

Ironically, in that same 1.0 storyline you can see that same dichotomy.
You know that "traitor" they were looking for in the quote I posted? Sthalmann leaks information suggesting he was being kept at Mealvaan's Gate, knowing how Rhoswen would react. The Sirens promptly storm the customs agency of the city-state looking to personally deliver his comeuppance, giving Sthalmann an excuse to "investigate" the crime and liquidate a certain piece of evidence (the tablet which worked in conjunction with the horn).
Carvallain is calm, cool, collected, and strategic ... but he (and especially certain strategic picks for his crew) can be brutal when it comes to executing action. Rhoswen is fiery, impulsive, passionate, and rowdy ... but she (and especially certain strategic picks for her crew) can be conversational and pragmatic in service to it. Unfortunately, as you've already noticed, these temperaments made Carvallain uniquely suited to walking a fine legal line between piracy and privateering, smuggling and "spice". Rhoswen just refuses to "betray the past" and adapt. That's for quitters who don't have salt in their blood. And thus her crew struggles. (For now.)
This also explains Carvallain having to (literally) drag her from Carteneau; she's too incensed to leave - the bloodlust from the battle itself is only fed into by her refusal to face the anguish of losing Sirens in the fight, so all she has is to keep killing. -

About the question with Cid, I've never played 1.0, and only started playing recently. This is somewhat echoing what others have said already, but I'm just trying to understand this scene, because it's been confusing me too, since I started playing.
Is it possible that he's just simply remembering you from 1.0? When you start ARR, the adventure's guild person says that no one can remember the WoL, and called them such as all they can see when they try to recall them is, the shadow against the light. When he says something like "That light, that was you wasn't it?" Is he simply saying that before, he was like everyone else, in that, when he was trying to remember this important person from his past (1.0), all he could see (remember) was a blinding light. But now "that light" he's realised was you, making him the one person who remembers that the WoL was in fact, you.
I was discussing this thread/question with my husband, and I wondered if this was the case, why wouldn't he tell the others that your character was the WoL from 1.0? He replied that, if that is the case, then likely there wouldn't have been any point in telling anyone else, as they would still just see the shadow/blinding light.
Like I said, I've never played 1.0, so I'm still confusdd about several lore related things, but am I understanding this scene correctly? -

Cid has a different type of amnesia then everyone else does. Everyone else the WoL runs into in 2.0 have just forgotten the WoL and the specifics of what happened at Cartenau. Cid has forgotten literally everything. When you meet him in 2.0 he doesn't remember that he's Cid or that he's an engineer or that he was originally from Garlemald. It takes the WoL's Echo to fix that.
If you are on a character from 1.0, everyone else somehow remembers you after Ultima Weapon is defeated. -

I feel like pointing out Cid has dialogue explaining why he doesn't shout from the rooftops you're the Warrior of Light if you played 1.0:
Also, when Hydaelyn restores the memories of the Scions and Grand Company leaders (and presumably, most people) post Praetorium, Cid ribs them about being ignorant after someone asks if he knew all along.Quote:

Another known you're a legacy player is when you meet the Emperor as he says that you've beaten Nael and Gauis along with bahumut if you've done coil up to that point. While everyone else get's no mention of Nael. It's one of the reasons I love those who's job it is to keep track of all of the things a player has done up to that point. Unlike for a lot of XI's who the heck are you even if you just saved the world with that npc.

The Summoner quest that gives you Dreadwyrm Trance has a slightly different explanation as well. If you're from 1.0 it says you were exposed to Bahamut aether by being at Cartenau. If you weren't, it explains that basically everyone was exposed to Bahamut's aether because of the Calamity no matter where they were at the time. The Lore Book even supports this and is almost cheeky when it explains that technically everyone who was exposed to Bahamut's aether can cast Teraflare if they had the right training...
