Most of the Stormblood fights have been fun because most of the time it's easy to tell what to do because there's clear indicators, voice/audio cues and the like, but some of the new fights have mechanics that are rough to figure out for the wrong reasons.
There's already been a thread about Starboard/Lardboard in Alphascape v3 and I can't imagine how much of a pain it is for dyslexic people because there is literally no other indicator besides the text and the words look pretty similar. Even worse is that I play with 2 Japanese players and the attacks are seriously just called Left/Right lasers in Japanese, so why was this mechanic made more annoying to figure out in other languages for no reason other than flavor? I also play with a German player and not even THAT language was safe from this.
There's some problems with v4 as well. Why aren't the icons used in the final phase just Blue Male/Pink Female symbol instead of the weird body shape icons we have now? That way the icon would be way different and also the color would help people recognize it more quickly. You could have also just made the female symbol more curved if you insist on using the ones you have now.
On top of that that phase has a mechanic where the bosses are buffed up if they are close to each other that we didn't notice for a few attempts because it's only indicated by a buff icon on the boss' status bars instead of a tether like everything else in this expansion so far. It's not like it makes the mechanic any difficult. On top of that it is easy to miss if the boss has a lot of dots and such on it, and the boss already has a mostly useless buff that tells you what form it is in that makes it easy to just filter out the "too close to the other one" buff.

The mechanic is incredibly simple to figure out, regarding Larboard and Starboard.
Larboard starts with "L", meaning get away from Omega's left. You don't even need to comprehend the attack name. Just look for the first letter.

This is not different from learning Bright Blade and Dark blade, those also aren't intuitive either, you simply learn which means which. Same principle applies.

That mechanic is throwing people off? Hmm, no surprise. I still see geared people in L70 roulette failing Temple of the Fist's "Port-Star"/"Fore-Aft" debacle on the 2nd boss quite frequently. The only confusion comes with the fact that both bosses turn before executing them, so you simply have to take into account where it's facing before positioning yourself.

as the big thread on the whole larboard/starboard has pointed out: starboard and port are very distinctive and easy to tell apart, while *arboard and **arboard are easy to mix up, especially when you have to focus on other stuff as well. Which is exactly the reason it was dropped ~200 years ago.

It would really be better if they had used the more distinctive terms "port" and "starboard". If you do the fight you don't read the terms and then react to what you read, the reaction time would be way to high to react to the mechanic. You have to train your brain to react automatically to the terms (usually described as "muscle memory"). Doing that on a term that only differs by a single letter makes it really more hard then it should be.

For Star/Larboard I wish they'd call it Starboard and Port, both because Larboard is an antiquated term and it's easier to tell the two words apart at a glance with all the flashy lights and backgrounds involved in FF XIV combat.

Is he calling the direction he's attacking(so port/star means get in front/behind) or is he calling the safe spots(meaning port/star wants you to get to either side)? Im 75% sure he's calling the direction of the attack, but i always doubt myself until the first attack goes out each time i randomly wind up there. Not that this applies to me with Omega. So how exactly do the aoes work where you get a marker with three arrows pointing in different directions? Does this mean party members where the arrows are pointing will take more damage so you want to point them away from the party? Or does it just mean you're about to get hit with a big aoe in general?
For example I think exceath's flare had this, and you get it sometimes in O12. My instinct with these is to run to the edge of the boss arena, pointing one arrow off the edge and trying to position where the party is between the other two arrows, but I was never sure if that was the 'correct' way to handle it or not. -

They deal damage to everyone based on how close they are to the point of impact (in thi case, you), so you generally want to go as far away from your party as possible. The specific directions of the arrows is irrelevant, it's just meant to be a bunch of arrows pointing outward as opposed to the inward-pointing arrows on damage-split aoes.Quote:

Ah okay. Guess I was over thinking it because I'd seen other 'proximity aoe markiers' used so when I got to it in this expansion I assumed it was a different mechanic.
Good news is I've been doing it right even if I was overthinking it by considering where the arrows are pointed, thanks. I guess if I was doing it wrong someone would have yelled at me for it by now. -

Lifehack: If your tank is facing north, follow directions as normal (Larboard=L=Left). As soon as you dodge the first one, turn your camera so that you're facing south (because he always spins). From there, dodge again using the same reference. This is the easy way. Or you can remember to dodge normally first, then since he always spins--if he does the opposite named move stay still. If he does the same move 2x, dodge the first normally, then dodge the other way the second.
Example"
1st Larboard (dodge right) + 2nd Larboard (dodge left)
1st Larboard (dodge right) + 2nd Starboard (stay right) -

Larboard/Starboard reminds me of Brightblade/Darkblade of Tsukuyomi. When you first see the attack being cast, you're like, "Oh f***, what do I do? Where should I be?" And then you die... But after running it several times, you get use to it and have no problem reacting because you memorize the phases so you know when there's an important cast coming up that you need to pay attention to. Basically, it seems like the game these days tend to lean towards mechanics that have no indicators and relies on you memorizing what comes next.

Something I want to point out about O12N:
Tanks being at the opposite of each other works to reduce the tanks' damage taken from meteors, however the rest will take more damage if they stand close to middle rather than at the edge furthest from both tanks (in simple terms, triangle formation.
Personal recommendation - place Omega M + F at the left and right side close to Omega Eye. The Eye signals where the laser goes through, meteors always land on tanks and Sagittarius Arrow always points in the direction of the Omega F tank.
By having both tanks sit close to the eye left and right of the rectangle AOE, the other six players can run all the way to the other side of the plattform for minimal damage taken while the tanks' damage is easier to mitigate and recover. Arrow lines up with eye laser in a T-shape, vastly reducing the effective AOE area compared to arrow going through middle.
TL;DR: Triangle formation similar to exdeath flare is recommended to handle damage easier; shield tanks and make them use fitting mitigation (if necessary tank stance - even high-end raiders consider tank stance for spot-on mitigation when needed). -
