Vampire the answer to the Blue Mage

Basically lifted directly from Bravely default, the idea is kind of unique.

It's different enough from typical FF5 Blue mages that FF14 could embrace it as something new. Yet since the name was used in Bravely Default though worked differently than bluemages in previous FF games, the way its done in FF14 could make it standout different from Bravely Default as well.

I know a lot of people immediately groaned and rolled their eyes at the mere mention of "Vampire", but think about it for a second, in certain fantasy universes when a Vampire consumes another vampire completely it is known as "Diablerie", you gain that vampires generation or lower your own, and more importantly its power. Now FF14 doesn't have to borrow all that, but the concept of this Fake Vampire job, that absorbs a bit of life from a creature and gaining a trait, power, or access to some of the jobs more noteworthy abilities, is like a more indepth version of Blue Mage. We've had Bluemages who've eaten monsters before in the past, Quina for example, and did anyone else notice that Quistis last name is "Trepe", it's one "s" short of being identical to a famous last name used in the Konami series Castlevania as the surname for Alucard who's father is none other than Count Dracula?

A new DPS role that merges with some of the blue mage skills, combined with a more deeper lore. I this could be the unique spin on the job that it needs to make it standout as not just another reiteration of the job, but something potentially surprisingly different.

TBF if we use the bravely series it could also be cats :D

I'm fairly certain that's exactly how Blue Mage will play out. The level 60-70 Red Mage questline has you going up against a villain who is basically a blue mage in all but name and color, He acquires his "void mage" powers by sucking the energy out of his opponents/victims and then using them for himself.

Trepe is also Spanish or Portuguese for something along the lines of telling someone off. Considering she's a teacher, I found it amusing as a kid, especially with how she treats Squall outside of class (informally). Her name's a pun.

The Castlevania series, itself, takes the name Tepes of the historical figure, Vlad III, more commonly known as Vlad the Impaler.

I'd actually not mind this, but more because I enjoy seeing mechanics from World of Darkness / Chronicle of Darkness as a whole. Though, I'm not entirely sure how they'd continuously revolve mechanics of the class around it. Learning skills is all well and good, but if BLU were to simply only use that mechanic once, I'm not sure it'd really keep its identity in check in XIV. I feel like it'd need to be a continuous thing, with a meter that needs filling to gain the ability to learn certain moves, not too unlike RDM, DRK, PLD and WAR. Essentially, instead of blood, the job consumes 'essence.' Enough essence allows the use of an ability or abilities after enough meter is gained.

I think you may have that back-to-front. From my understanding, he doesn't acquire his void magic by taking other people's energy, but rather that the process that gave him those powers also made it necessary for him to feed on others' energy to sustain himself. He's not drawing skills or abilities from the other person, 'just' their life force.

Here's a thought, what if the class is a mix of pre-existing BLU mage spells, famous blue mage spells like Flamethrower, bad breath and so on, with a vampiric twist on the rest of the class, in the vein that a lot of the original and unique abilities of the class are mimicries of popular vampiric powers. Lifedrain being similar to a clerics heal but is a drain instead from a target creature, maybe the potency isn't as high or maybe it is since not even a cleric can tank being hit forever by healing herself. Soul Drain drain a portion of life from the target and converting it into mp, perhaps this is how they sustain the ability to cast other spells more frequently, as the cost for casting bluemagic/vampiric magic has a pretty high mp cost, so soul draining is something to be expected to see quite often in rotation.

The only problem I see is that they used the vampire theme for RDM already

They used a similar story for the antagonist in the red mage story, but they didnt use it for the hero, in fact it could be that the red mage spawns the blue mage quest. Many already theorize that geomancer will spring from AST, and I find myself wanting to speak like a Malkavian now.

No. They should just call it a "Blue Mage" and develop their lore for it however they deem fit. No reason to have to rename and present it as anything else just because Bravely Default had an affinity of renaming almost half of their classic Final Fantasy jobs.

I'd almost say they more or less tried to go this route in FFXIV 1.0 and when the fans weren't feeling the "classes" they introduced iconic classic named jobs to save the day with familiarity. I don't foresee them straying from implementing more classic named jobs- with the exception of the "FFXIV-unique job" Yoshi mused about once.

BLU will be fine by just learning from "unique" monsters in its own Job Quests. BLU can stand out via being a the opposite of AST considering most BLU magic usually relates to enfeeblements. And if that's not a design route, whichever outcome will be more in-tune to the job than adding a vampire layer to it.

Exactly I don't want to play a "Vampire" I want to play a Blue Mage. Why do you guys think FFXIV 1.0 Classes failed so badly because while they were basically "White Mage", "Black Mage", "Warrior" they not only didn't feel like one they weren't named one.

I play Final Fantasy for the jobs and a Vampire to me is not a Blue Mage. That's like saying a mage in other games are black mages and while true, it doesn't have that same feeling.

They can be really 'unique' monsters if you utilize the Soul Crystal. Ya know, that thing that ALREADY houses knowledge and abilities that you gain gradual access to. Say it's skills taken from enemies in the past, and you focus on obtaining that first because you can get the skills from the today enemies whenever you want. It's a "get out of jail" ticket to let them do whatever they want with BLU while maintaining the lore context.

Please no. We already have a job that draws power from the abyss/ void and uses darkness to fight. Please don't suggest my favorite job's lore and theme be stolen for yet another DPS job in the sea of an already bloated role. I feel better would be Blue Mage as a Tank with either Gun Blades or Scimitars. The Blue Magic can simply be Garlean Ceruleam Magi Tech or traditional monster skills learned from Monster types instead of individual monsters in the same genus (Ashkin, Voidsent, Forgekin, Primal, Spoken, ect...), obtained via quest. Yoshi P has long said Blue Mage would not function as it did in FFXI, shoehorning it to fit FFXIV as such would just be a disservice.

Why not both?

Perhaps, this may be a cool thing: reincorporate Blue Mage's style into a different "Job."; but I just want to play a Blue Mage; regardless of how implemented. Heck, maybe they'll learn the ability from another Blue Mage that's the actual trainer?

Imagine what a fun throwback would it be if the ol' classic AF Blue Mage from FFXI is the player's Mentor, and that said character, transfers his essence into the player's Soul Crystal to learn the spells.

Not sure how complicated it would be to actually "Learn" an ability from an enemy since most enemies just spam just that, their abilities, as us players just do our WS Rotation and what not.

In regards to Vampire, I can't wait to delve into Bravely Default; maybe we can see it as an MMO one day, or perhaps a new game will be introduced for the Nintendo Switch!

I don't really understand the arguments of "No I want to play Blue mage with X" um, even if you weren't aware of the design stylizing of the Devs at this point, why do you play FF14 at all? You do realize that the majority of the classes don't adhere to any idea of what the original incarnation of them existed before hand right? You do know Warrior never existed in any previous FF game and that it's actually more a deviation of Berserker from ff5, and that Scholar is nothing like actual scholars from previous games, Samurai and Ninja, have just about nothing in common with any previous incarnations of the jobs from previous games save for their names, Machinist? Never existed until 14, and you can't even argue any similarities because non exist outside of using a gun. So even if they do decide to make a blue mage what makes you think it'll play anything like any Blue mage you've seen before? It could be called Blue Mage and play like exactly like a Vampire, or like a Magical Girl anime heroine, "Blue Star Power Yo!" <--(no one is going to catch this reference or where it came from other than die hard youtube fans/watchers)

Or Blue Mage can just stay as Blue Mage. Odds are we'll "learn" skills via the Job quests and depending on how far SE go with it, learn from bosses in dungeons and raids.

Of the coloured Mages, Black and Red have stuff to do with the Void. White Mages do not. Let's balance it out and have Blue Mage having nothing to do with Voidsent/demons.

This is a fallacy, outside of using iconic monster spells, there is no "play like a bluemage." In FF5 you had to get hit by particular monster spells before you could use that spell, in FF6 it was the same, in FF7 you needed a special materia to recreate a semblance of it, in 8 you had to find special item drops and have quitis absorb it? and use them as limit breaks, in ff9 Quina had to eat a monster, in 10 Kimahri had to absorb it via stabbing them with his spear and like Quitis use them as limit breaks, in 11 ill not speak of it because of spoilers for later in this conversation. 12 didn't exist, 13 didn't exist, 14 yet to be revealed and 15 didn't exist, in tactics you needed to gain certain monster parts i believe.

Lore wise This is where Blue Mage fans don't seem to realize how much of my Vampire idea makes sense here. Blue mages in FF11 which we now know is the past of FF 14, WERE CREATED VIA EXPERIMENTATION / BODY MODIFICATIONS. I cannot emphasize that enough, Blue Magic in this world Isn't a learned thing, it is a symbiosis between a modified humanoid and the absorption of monster essence, Absorption.... Monsters.. In other words YOU BECOME A MONSTER! What is the most iconic Monster that feeds on other creatures? The Freakin VAMPIRE. However we use Soulstones in FF14 So what will likely happen is that you will find the soulstone of a now deceased Blue Mage who imparted all his essence into the stone, and by awakening it you will inherit those traits/abilities, ie become the Blue Mage/Vampire.

They don't have to call Blue Mages vampires in FF14, if it's a continuation of the Lore from 11 they will be vampires regardless. Also Lore wise who would have came up with these vile ideas fo modification other than the void sent who want to take over the mortal world and what better way to do it than to make people start fusing their essences with monster essences, possibly voidsent essence like a certain potential red mage did, oh wait Voidsent will do anything to possess people.

FFXI and FFXIV are not the same world. This has been confirmed years ago in a Live Letter (plus the whole lore behind Hydaelyn and such).

Right now, we have no idea how BLU will work or what its lore will be (or if it really is confirmed for next expansion. I'm hoping it is, of course), though we can safely assume they'll wear blue. I highly doubt SE will recycle the same lore from FFXI.

I don't know why you're so hung up on turning Blue Mage into a vampire, but if you wanted something like this, the best fit would actually be Necromancer (FFV) which plays quite a lot like Blue Mage.

FF1 is welcome to come debate it's point as much as it likes since Me and FF1 go way back to Fighter becomes a Knight, Red mage becomes Red Wizard, Black Belt/Monk becomes Kung Fu Master/Sensei, Black Mage becomes Black Wizard, White Mage becomes White Wizard, Thief becomes Ninja days. :) Don't see any warriors though. Was that the pal version? Samurai shares what skills from the previous Samurai, I don't see Coin Toss in this game, are you referring to something in 11? I can go varify it if you like, other than that I see no skill relations at all, and throwing a fuma shuriken isn't the same throw in the previous games, or the limited ninjutsus from FF4, but again if you're referring to 11 well my my, how the cherry pickers pick, Eorzea sure is learning a lot from Vana'diel despite them not being the same world according to most.

That's predominantly a matter of perception due to constant comparisons between 11 and 14 just because they're both MMORPGs, breaking from the standard of other games in the series. Yes, there may be sources of inspiration from 11 for some parts of 14, but the same could be said of other games serving as sources of inspiration for content.

As for the main topic, we wouldn't get a Vampire job for the exact same reason we wouldn't get a Necromancer job: in terms of lore, it's considered to be crossing the line into what is understood as inherently evil or morally wrong. Even jobs like Dark Knight or Black Mage, while seeming as malign or even heretical at times due to drawing power from darker places, still aren't entirely considered evil--ethically ambiguous, maybe, but not inherently evil when compared to anything pertaining to undeath, which is a massive red flag to every extant culture in the game.

For an answer to Blue Mage, I'd definitely look at something Garlean and potentially more mechanical.

You can be cynically pedantic all you want for argument's sake. But going on a side track rant of "jobs are non sequitur" to their design through different games isn't really adding anything to the conversation outside of "we can because reasons". BLU being vampires or frankensteins is not a concept I can disagree upon, but I'd rather look at things based off on how they've done other jobs and see that the theme of "Vampire" was already used with RDM, so I doubt they would recycle it.

BLU magic being based off Magitek (Which is predominant in 6, not 5) is not exactly farfetched.

All I'm saying is Blue Mage, in games with a Job system, all tend to follow the same trend. FFV, FFTA and FFTA2 require a Blue Mage to be hit by a monster skill to learn it, whereas BLU's in FFXI need only see the attack (otherwise it would be impossible to learn the heal/support skills). I'd also like to see BLU's have nothing to do with the void/demons and also not be a recycled story from FFXI (which, again, is not FFXIV's past).

Felt like piping in on this, I doubt it'll be something we'll have to properly queue into a duty for. However, SB saw us go into various dungeons and even raid grounds in solo duties for job quests. They can do something like this for the BLU quests, and even use Magicites to recreate bosses who, lore wise, we cannot face off against anymore because we beat them and there was only one around. The Magicite (or even the Soul Crystal, there's been precedents for that) recreates the enemy from our memories so we can learn from it, but because of affinity or what not it has to be done in that particular location and that explains the instance.

Fighter in the original is a warrior. He is the original Warrior of Light. FFX-2 also had a warrior dresspshere.

That said, the FFXIV warrior is more closely related to a berserker than a warrior.

You're really splitting hairs here. Fighter is simply the original translation. In Japanese it's called Senshi, which simply means fighter, soldier, or warrior. The Japanese name for Warrior in this game is Senshi. They're the same job.

They've since gone back and renamed Fighter as Warrior in the newer versions of FF1.
