The Great Hunt (Extreme) should be named The Great Hunt (G-rank)

See the title. For those not watching the LL, "The Great Hunt" is the name of the Monster Hunter collaboration trial where we'll be fighting Rathalos. It will come with both a normal and an Extreme version.

This is a bonus trial anyway, so I don't see the harm in adding in a bit more classic Monster Hunter personality to help it stand out.

Just saw it on the Live Letter, so hopefully this movement gains some traction before the event goes live!

Or High Rank. Would've been a pretty nice touch. Still, that trailer got me excited. Mounting looks to be fun. I really hope that they keep the poison tail, too. And the always fun roars that stagger you. I may have to rush through HW and SB now - this really makes me want to jump in this fight now.

Also, I'm just now reading up on the translations and comments on reddit, but apparently, the Extreme fight is 4-man. Holy crap, 4-man Ex! Just like in MH. Definitely giving this a go.

I'm told they confirmed it won't have an aggro table as well :D
Looking forward to this more than any fight we've had in ages.

No aggro? Yes! Oooh, the memories of fighting Rathalos. I am 100% in for this. Hoo boy...I wonder if it's normal enrage is in as well. And if you can cut off its tail.

They've made it as authentic to the MH experience as possible, at least the EX mode. 4 players, automatic raising up to 3 times, 4 deaths = duty fail, 10 potions (which I assume are a duty action) for healing, no aggro table, everything is telegraphed by movements, etc.

Don't forget there are no role requirement either. I'm super excited for this.

And a debuff that renders healing magic ineffective. Absolutely loving this~

I practically screamed seeing Rathalos as a mount, too.

I'm wondering if you can go solo in this fight.

...seems to imply that you can attempt it solo if you like? Anyone that can translate exactly what the 1~8 and 1~4 mean?

Or the Tempered Great Hunt as there is no G rank in Monster Hunter World

I think people may regret this. It's going to be hard to counter certain jobs advantages over others, like bard's mobility, or tank's ability to mitigate damage. I can see cheese comps popping up fast; 4x WAR or BRD maybe.

Naw, if its gonna be like this then their are gonna be achievements for soloing both 8 man and the 4 man, gonna be easily done for MH Veterans like myself. This should be fun. Cheese comps always been for bads.

The only way I can think SE would counter that would be changing how damage works in this fight. I don't think our normal rules will apply.

What I'm thinking: there might be poison that healers might be esuna, but I'm personally not counting on that.
There might be attacks that will one shot you and your mitigations won't matter.
Maybe roles might helpful more in normal, but I'm completely going to assume it'll be different in Extreme (like HG might actually work in normal, but extreme would completely disregard the skill).

From looking at the trailer, was already seeing the tells for Rathalos' attacks (like the wind up for tail sweep). I looks like Monster Hunter in Erozea, but I'm still a bit skeptical (but hopeful) of the actual execution.

It does sound nice but I am a bit miffed that such new mechanics only come to us thanks to a crossover..maybe we should get more of those into the team, for new and creative ways of fighting. x)

If these changes will be well-received, there is a chance they will be used more often in original FFXIV content in the future.

Naw it will be fine. Long as servers are in the right place. I get 20ms or less latency right now in XIV. But I use a Custom Rig with a gaming Nic, and a gaming router and utilize a service. All attainable easily though by anyone willing to spend just a few bucks.

"True action- based" MMOs (TERA, Black Desert Online, etc) only really work as intended on fiber optic connections. There's a reason TERA balanced the game differently between Korea and North American regions (IIRC, slayer was OP AF in Korea while Sorceress was OP AF when I played for NA and changes between the two regions showed in those are the two classes that received heavy nerfs in their regions. In NA, slayer never got good enough as the latency meant landing the skill that did massive damage was incredibly unlikely). This is mostly speaking in terms of PvP and smaller targets. It made doing Kelsaik a nightmare sometimes, as getting the crystals low and killing them needed consistent timing or it was a raid wipe. Until BDOs servers recently changed, doing world bosses was a flip of a coin on if lag caused you to die and lose large amounts of contribution to get gear drops. Any type of lag meant you were probably going to get hit by Kutum or Karanda's big, quick, one-shotting abilites (unless you just have high enough DP on a class with a good block).

It wouldn't surprise me if that's why Monster Hunter Frontier never came our way. If you've seen any of the "high end" hunts (AKA the rank ABOVE G), actually being able to time your iframes for attack is required as quite a few monsters have one shots and I'm skeptical if you have time to sheath your weapon and superman dive all of the attacks and get up in time for the next without killed.

Right now, with FFXIV, I live on the east cost and get around 270-320 ping. With pingzapper, I'm down to around 180 to 220 ping.

Soooo what your saying is, ppl need to git gud with getting better ISP services, better hardware, and also request for more locally available servers? Ok.

Im east coast too btw, still get 20-30ms due to what I use. Never been a problem. Probably why I tear threat away from other paladins all the time too. From the sound of your high ping, it seems like you are on DSL or satellite. Poor hardware can also be a factor, something is very very wrong with your setup. You should not be getting a ping that high.

ISP your with can also be a factor, theirs many reasons you could be suffering from high ping like that.

Exactly. This isn't just a collaboration event - it's also an experiment into how the community reacts to a fight design that's significantly outside the box compared to what we're used to. If it's a success, it'll encourage SE to try more unique fight designs in future.

Some people do not have access to decent internet. Personally I do enjoy action based combat like BDO, but yeah playing BDO with 200 ping would be painful.

I wish I had more than one or two ISP choices in my area. I wish my "git gud" was something that I could control and not be a monopoly in my area.

My guess is that the extreme version of the event will be ran with.

PLD, any healer( SCH or AST due to shields probably) RDM and any other dps

PLD even though there is no aggro table PLD can heal and cover and provide shields. RDM for emergency heals if the healer goes down

But I hope the fight provides a dynamic feel to where any composition can pass the event in the extreme version.

I hope the community is down for the no aggro table aspect I would love to see it implemented in future content. I do fear the lack of structure will put off some players though.

I'm mostly gonna get Monster Hunter World on Steam for this reason.

especially tanks, who are robbed of their main job. we already have a fight with no aggro table: last boss in stone vigil hard mode. and as a tank i feel kinda stupid there.

that specific fight also puts a healdebuff onto you when you get hit. so the whole concept is actually not that new.

however, as a DRK i guess i can shine here with TBN spam ^^

With Behemoth having dropped in MHW, I will say, I never thought I'd ever see an actual tank aggro mechanic in a Monster Hunter game. Makes me wonder what we may actually get in XIV.

Forgive me going off topic for a hot minute but this is an attitude I've seen online for many years and it never fails to annoy me.

For a good many people in the world when it comes to their internet "git gud" is just not possible. I live in Australia, a large, isolated country with a fairly low population. We are also a country with an almost absolute ISP monopoly (a necessary monopoly in a lot of ways but a monopoly none the less) and a lot of very old network infrastructure made up of mostly copper wire. I get 170-180 ping to the NA servers, which is pretty good and due to physics being a thing, no matter how much I theoretically spend (I currently have the fastest internet available in my area, FFTN, about $95 a month) I'm not going to get much better with our current technology. This is the same story for a lot of countries in the world.

As for "gaming" nics and modems, they A. are not "just a few bucks" more, they're quite a bit dearer and B. are not going to do much of anything for ping. They will help with traffic management and preventing some packet loss but for the most part modern in built nics in decent mobo's and modern routers are going to do more than good enough unless you're hitting them with a tonne of traffic. As for ping reduction services/VPNs, they are also not a great option, for one they aren't guaranteed to do anything, they can try and get around your ISP's terrible routing but they're very limited in what they can do. Not to mention not a lot of people want to spend the monthly fee for one of these services on top of FFXIV's already fairly expensive sub.

Also, really? "request for more locally available servers"? I can't speak for other area's of the world but the Oceanic communities I know we are very vocal about wanting local or at least closer servers, the problem is that it's just not really viable for most companies due to the cost not being worth the size of the local player base.

Honestly "git gud" in general is pretty dismissive and insulting but in this context it's not just "pretty". No matter how much hardware I put in front of a bad network, it will still be a bad, but more expensive network. If if it was an amazing network, it still couldn't defy physics. I hope you can try to be less dismissive next time.

If possible try testing out the other ISP in your area, to be perfectly frank, when being inside of the US and connecting to a US server if you're getting 270-320 ping (heck, even 180 to 220 ping) something is either wrong in your LAN or your ISP's routing is simply unacceptable and would be one of the worst cases of routing I've heard of in a long while.

Ps. Yes I finally set up my forum account for this post. Yes, it's a slow day. Does this mean that games that are so ping reliant shouldn't be made? No of course not, most of the world thankfully doesn't have to deal with this but some empathy would go a ways.
