U/U, Materia and compromise

Believe it or not.. once again the community is split right down the middle on an issue...
Surprise, right?

There are several issues here though.

1. NM's dropping gear as opposed to mats for gear

2. Unique/untradeable gear vs crafted materia gear (single AND double slotted)

3. Old content being made pointless by new, easy-to-make crafted gear and materia

Here are some possible solutions:

1. Unique Materia
We know the Cobalt Cuirass is the big dog tank piece. What if there was an Adamantoise NM that dropped Adamant Materia that gave +50 def, +50 vit.
But it would use up all materia slots, so you had to put it on a cuirass with no other materia on it. And the cuirass becomes the "Impenetrable Cobalt Cuirass"

2. Unique Materia V2
Materia that only fits 1 piece. Similar to upgrading gear...
At 2.0, there would be 2 NMs (I know hopefully more than 2, but 2 that concern us for this suggestion).
Some type of unnamed as of yet Fire Wyrm and Phoenix. Beating this Fire Wyrm gives you a special Materia that can ONLY be used on an Ifrit weapon. That has some CRAZY stats like Att +100, fire resistance +100
And Phoenix drops the catalyst needed to attach said materia...
I know Ifrit possibly wont be in game as of 2.0, but you get what I mean

3. Melding like repairs
So you've got your adamant materia. But it is Unique/untradeable. Make it so you can put the gear, catalyst and materia in your Bazaar. And since there is a 100% success rate, there is no real risk to doing so

4. Bound gear
A good alternative to unique/untradeable would be gear that is crafted from some big, hard-to-get NM drop is unique, but doesn't become untradeable until you actually equip or use it. Once you do that, it becomes "bound" to you. This would fit in good with the whole "Spiritbonding" and "Aether" lore of the game. I wanted this special gear to be bound to you upon equipping, but my buddy Darkstar likes to try on the gear he makes for people before he gives it to them and thinks it should be bound to you once you actually use it. Either way, the same idea remains

i only like to do that when i actually get that piece double or triple melded for someone or some specific high level item hq so i can tease them and tell them thanks for the toss lol.

basically my method would be more of the spiritbonding of gear to only begin once you use the gear and it droops below 100%. once that gear has been used that gear would then become untradeable. it just seems it would be easier to make lore to become part of the game for the dev team that way. the some specific gear can become attuned with the char wearing the gear as it is involved in usage while being worn. the gear would no loner accept being used by another char.

my personal opinion is that i hate untradeable gear completely. it is one of the main reasons the markets have crashed. people get an item and then there's no reason for them to buy another piece of gear and once they advance past that piece of gear it just gets thrown away. people aren't willing to buy from the market because they feel the gear is overpriced because they can get better gear for free and people aren't willing to make gear to sell because it sells for less than the materials to make the gear costs.

I think SOPA was a bad idea too...

But it's like fan fiction, it's just fun to put out there anyway... I wasn't trying to offend anyone with a suggested compromise. I really dont even see how anything I've said could be taken as such. The very few worthwhile untradeable pieces aren't the reason the markets are the way they are. Crafting materials are abundant and crafters are common, which makes the gear they create very common. The supply of gear is way higher than the demand for it, which is why you can get a cobalt cuirass for 30k or a dated tarred leather belt for 9k or whatever. People mass produce them and then undercut like crazy.

that is part of it. another part is people have friends that will make it for them. there's also part that people are already geared out with u/u gear. a part is all the gear that is premade that drops from the coffer chests. there's also a part of the problem with the amount of players looking for items because the game is massively top heavy.

u/u is not the only issue that has crashed the market, but it is one of the parts that has been added to make the whole issue.

The way I figured SE would do things is give U/U items a set bonus later on that would elevate them to be equivalent to the amount of stats you would get from double meld items. Say you wear a full set PLD AF, you don't have quite as much VIT or HP as a double meld armor would, but now you have an additional effect on your Aegis Boon making it last longer than one block or your Sentinel duration was extended. Wouldn't that make up for the lack of health buffer that you lack from crafted gear?

OP shouldn't get flamed for this, at least he's floating reasonable ideas out there. Developers read these a lot and if there's a good idea they haven't thought of I'm sure they at least run it by the director.

My thought on the issue is why even have that much U/U gear, think of the sentinels set it's harder to get and is better than the crafted gear but you can also put materia into it. The cheaper easier crafted gear would most likely be better most of the time because it's more likely to have 2+ materia, but it still wouldn't have the same potential as the better gear. Think about if they made all of the darkhold gear not U/U then it goes from being dead content to permanent content because even if people got the gear they wanted they would have to farm more to get the better gear to have multiple materia.

I almost wonder if they made the Sentinels set a non U/U set from the last strongholds to toy with that idea. I think I've seen them say they don't want crafters being cut out of the game so that's why the crafted gear is better, you can't affix the materia without crafters so they wouldn't be left out.

and yes, I thought it was weird that only the Sentinel is that way... I wonder what thats about
the Sentinel pants used to be U/U and SE went out of their way to change it

crafters should be able to make better equipment plain and simple, i dont want a inventory full of equip i cant make money off of in the future like when they raise the level cap my untradable equip becomes garbage anyways. when a crafted peice still has value and i can sell to the lower level people and they can do the same when they out grow it.

whats the point of having money if everything is u/u no one will buy anything and the market becomes useless

That's why I said not having as much rather than eliminating U/U entirely, things like the primal weapons are good enough to not have materia added. But even then that would be cutting blacksmith out of the game, then when we get AF gear armorer is cut out. It's a tricky situation for sure.

I suppose they could bring back the cursed gear idea from XI and use it for that sort of thing.

I think OP's point is valid somehow too, but I thought "we" (<-- I didn't define the size and range... you define it :O) already sort of have some knowledge that SE don't want HNM drop, U/U items, or crafting any category overpowers others.** So, it's giving people more choices to be good.
They certainly don't want to repeat XI's problem that to be good: (just examples)

• you have to eat curry/sushi to be best DD

• you have to own a peacock charm

• you have to do dynamis

From food reform, you can see lots of these evidence...
and he did said he didn't want any item overpower others too...

so crafter only players will get their respect (??? lots L50s are there. where is no respect! who owns mats has the respect!)
fighter only players, but poor as hell, can get GC seal item.
elite players, spent 30 hours to get the drop they want, can get their items from raid, hnm, god battle.

at least, above are what the reasons I think why SE make them almost the same...

Sometimes I hate choices because it complicated things. But it's also a blessing that I don't have to do something but still have reasonable outcome. Isn't it enough "You HAVE TO..." in RL already?

** you can't really set a justice to make everything equal, then it become injustice... so of course it's the hardest to get should be the best... but it's up to the authorities, SE, to decide.
