A shout out to the 1.0 players still here today

A bit long, sorry!

I joined FFXIV just a little bit before patch 3.1 came. My knowledge of 1.x at this point came mostly from small, sporadic references mentioned here on these forums, and eventually the Coils of Bahamut questline. I do have vague memories of hearing about it failing, which along with a bad taste in my mouth left from FFXI, kept me from subscribing. I recently caught a video series on YouTube titled, "The Fall and Rise of FFXIV", and I now greatly regret that decision.

This series, made me feel what it is like to possess the echo. Through these videos, I saw in great detail how we got the game we are playing today. Everything from the atma currency to teleport, the grindy exp point/leveling system, those horrid world maps, atrocious UI, server crashes, the two directors stepping down and Yoshida stepping in to fill both positions.

That man, Naoki Yoshida. Talk about a stunt, that really should be known as one of the craziest and risky stunts in gaming history. He and his dev team decide to launch a calamity at 1.x in order to start 2.0. My eyes, ears, and brain were in non-stop absorption mode, all the way to the very haunting cutscenes players would experience when logging in, and the descension of Dalamud, and the heavily speculated, "The end is coming."

When I saw what players experienced on that epic day when the 1.x servers would go offline for good, I broke down in tears. All of the LSs huddled below Dalamud, the great Gobbue wall, Ul'dah running rampant with mobs, that violent clash with the Garleans, I really wish I could have been part of that. As empathetic as I am, I am sure there is still a lot that I would have to be there in order to fully understand. I would have dealt with all of that mess to have those precious memories.

So to you players who have your well earned Legacy Tattoos and chocobos, and still playing today, you have such a newfound respect from me. As a long time FF player, I should have been there with all of you. Thank you so much for your dedication which undoubtedly helped Yoshida's vision come to light!

Some of us are still excited for whats to come. I don't really keep track, but I still see a few friends who are around from the old days.

No reason to respect any of us anymore than anyone else to be fair.

I must have forgotten to sign the hive-mind contract that was going around back then.

Sure, it had it problems, but so does the current version.

Yeah, the current version does have some issues, and underperforms in certain areas compared to other mmos, but compared to then, the game has come so far.

Wasn't this just amazing? I started in 1.0 when it first came out, but I started the game not knowing what an MMO was and had been expecting another standard FF title. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of dropping the game early on because I found it to be very disappointing (because it wasn't what I thought it would be). So, despite being there for 1.0 (briefly), I wasn't there to experience the calamity and after seeing the same video as you, I really regretted not committing to 1.0 because it really was just... so amazing. I wish I could have experienced that live. This regret encouraged me to get back in the game and try 2.0. Been around off and on ever since.

It makes me wonder when/if we ever finish this story/MMO if they will choose to end it in a similar way. If they ever did or ever had to, I hope so and I plan on being there when/if it happens.

I wish I had experienced more of it. I couldn't get any of my friends to play with me even when there was no subscription fee.

Truth be told, I retired from gaming after I left XI. I had absolutely no plans on coming back, and missed the remainder of PS2's lifespan, and the entire PS3 generation. It was Yoshida who convinced me to come back. Not personally of course, but through his passion for the franchise and dedication to keep SEs flagship series in the sky.

Whatever they have planned for this game going forward, I definitely plan on being there no matter what it is :)

I really like the direction 1.0 was taking after Yoshida joined, from what I saw on youtube. Wish I was there during the transition. Definitely have a lot of respect for the 1.0 players who never lost faith in Eorzea.
One thing I wish they would bring in 5.0 is a more dangerous world with rare things, 1.0 seemed like it was going in a direction where exploring was seeing as something special and important.

I opted not to play very long into 1.0 due to the hardware requirements. It was just not viable to spend the money to upgrade the system to play something that wasn't in that good of shape. I wanted to see where the story was going, but it was just a slog to do, and when surrounded by 50 bots at every aetheryte, made the game feel like the developers didn't care about it.

Even for 2.0 I replaced the video card as a consequence of killing the previous card, and then when I got a 4K monitor that card was suffering so I justified replacing it with the top-end card (GTX 1080 at the time) when Neir:Automata came out.

Playing with good hardware makes a huge difference in playability. In some cases I can't believe anyone could bear playing this game at 720p on a laptop. There is just so little screen real estate at that resolution. At 4K I actually pushed down the UI widget sizes.

He may have very well single-handedly saved not only the franchise, but the company. Credit should also go to his dev team and support staff, but for the most part he chose who these people were.

After watching the videos, something really interesting to me that got scrapped was Hamlets. These instances actually allowed combat classes to work alongside the crafters and gatherers and I thought it was soooo cool! I think they could actually do something with that if the incentives are good enough for all DoM/DoW and DoH/DoL.

I totally get that. Just looking at the facial expressions of the former director, I could easily tell that his heart was not into the development of this game. He didn't care about it at all, and how he was selected likely goes along with some of the other questionable decisions SE has made. They really are hit or miss. But they hit a series saving grand slam homerun with Yoshida.

Interestingly enough though towards the end of 1.x, the game actually seemed to be playable. At least in comparison to how it was in the beginning. However, I know all about being so bloody committed, that you endure whatever is dished out. I don't even know if I was around for 1.x, if I would have made it to the end. That is why I made this thread to acknowledge the players who have done so.

FF14 1.0 had almost no publicity in NZ, I hadn't even heard of it until FF14:ARR came out, I never saw it in any of the game stores here. I would have played it if I knew about it :P I wish there was more videos of 1.0 around, I would love to watch the whole story. I have the "unspoken" orchestion roll, and it sounds pretty amazing, it makes me wonder what all of the other 1.0 music is like.

But yeah, I remember watching the fall and rise too, and how Yoshida was saying that the original devs hadn't even looked at their competitors in the MMO market, and that the teams were disconnected from each other.

1.0 was definitely an experience and I, alongside my boyfriend, played throughout pretty much all of it from the beginning disaster until Yoshida took over and gave us jobs and revamped a lot of the systems of the game and also until the last night where the 1.0 servers shutdown for good.

The game was slower paced, the graphics were very pretty, but I did not have a computer strong enough to really appreciate them to the fullest.

I did pretty much all the hardest content even in 1.0 and some of it was definitely unique and I likely won't forget it.

End game savage dungeons were a thing and they were tough. The Dzemael Darkhold, The Aurum Vale, and the Cutter's Cry we have today are a weak shadow of what they were in 1.0. They required a lot of coordination and time and only if you got lucky you would get a Darklight piece of gear from one of the boxes at the end which was pretty much 1.0's savage raid gear (they re purposed it to the Darklight gear we have now that was used at 2.0 launch as philosophy tome gear.)

A lot of fond memories despite its failings and I definitely prefer where the game went after Yoshida took over and after its relaunch into ARR though, but I can definitely appreciate it for what it was and for the unique experiences.

My computer wasn't that great for the game so it doesn't do the graphics much justice though.

For me 1.x had a lot of very interesting, yet flawed, concept. It saddens me that in order to "fix" them, they were almost all dropped, ending in a very straightforward though enjoyable reboot.

I still miss being able to repair other people's gear.

Despite all its flaws, I genuinely enjoyed 1.0. The game did start to improve tremendously when Yoshida stepped in and that time period where the entire community looked forward to the rebirth were magical, even if I have mixed feelings about the finished product. Those were indeed crazy memorable times. I remember being part of the great gobbue wall. I remember taking part of the chaotic fun that was Ul'dah. I remember the chilling Dalamud Answers replacing the outer world music. I remember zooming around from place to place searching for Atmos.

I only wish the final day could have had more positive memories. I remember sitting with my friends and linkshell and linkshells gone past. Then the garleans came and with them the connection issues. I remember fighting between logging in, staying logged in. I remember giving up until something told me inside to try in the last five minutes. I managed to log back in and through the server lag teleport out of Mor Dhonna and out to La Nosche to run to my favorite spot in the land and log out for that last time.

Some of those are interesting spells. I never got much into blast maging but recognize many of those spells as WHM and DRK spells from FFXI (two jobs I did play). The effects are also similar. I think I will search around a bit for the abilities lists of some of the other jobs as well. Thanks for this!

The Ul'dah chaos reminded me so much of Dynamis in FFXI haha! Dalamud in the background and the thunderstorms along with the creepy version of Answers playing is really ominous. God, that must have really been something. It is too bad about the crappy connection issues, but I'd be more than happy with it if I had some screen shots of my character during this time, and the legacy chocobo and tattoo. Grrrr! You guys have such bragging rights!! :)

I'm hoping one day that there will be a journey into the past thing, where we can go back to the lush green beauty Corthas had. The clouds that transitioned I would stay there for hours and hours just fishing. The Unspoken music - -

What I really just need is a zone where I can just hang out in and have that chill kind of vibe. Maybe its just me but I haven't felt the same nostalgic. In 1.0 there were many places even in Mor'Dhona where I would just pause and want to take a million screenshots because of its sheer beauty. Maybe knowing that the hard to reach places that were blocked around the hardest of monsters were more compelling to me. But I still haven't felt the same.

It's not a negative perspective. I still love the new content that SE pushes out but if 1.0 had anything that I miss was just the wholesome feeling like I was really an adventurer in a big giant world that could take me out without any second thoughts. Even at Max level.

I honestly don't really think of it as bragging rights. Personally I stayed just because I loved the world. Despite the flaws, despite the backlash, despite everything. FFXIV 1.0 was my FFXIV and always will be. It just had that magic and emotion in it for me. I stayed because I wanted to, not because of promised goodies. Though to be honest, the one thing I'm most proud and happy about from those days was having my name in the credits. FFXIV 1.0 was my FFXIV and that alone meant the world to me.

Yeah, I really did not like the changes they made to this class, which I was main until the changes. I miss all of the absorbing and HP regain abilities soo much. It reminded me a lot more of BLM from XI than anything BLM in XIV currently has. My favorite spells for BLM in XI was drain and aspir, and I collected dark magic gear/merits for years in order to practically have my own refresh in Dynamis double dark weather. Now in XIV, BLM has nothing like this, at all. Just stand there and die without others healing you, more or less.

I really am salty over those changes more than most other changes I'm salty about.

Regarding the high specs for playing 1.0, I built a beast of a PC for the time. One of the many problems with 1.0 was the high polygon count of environmental objects.
This New Year's event object would ramp up the fans in my GPU, and if I stayed next to it, the pc would crash. I call it the Kadomatsu from Hell:

Crappy game mechanics and server limitations aside...(a lot of those lol)

What I missed from 1.0
1) Job change in dungeons. Some people hated it but this set FFXIV apart from every other game out there. Need blunt damage? Everyone into MNKs to bash the hell out of everything.
2) Unscripted instances - moves were semi-randomly chosen from what they can do, so it can get really challenging (fun fights but can be bad at times)
3) Speed runs and bonuses. Again some people hate it, but its pretty fun to aim for something aside the usual zz grind.
4) Elements mattered. So did resistances.
5) Round the clock parties.

Yoshida did a good job in those final moments of 1.x, for the reboot.

Game is going in the wrong direction and with the technical difficulties going on with the server, I'm surprised I'm still here too.

I was there from the start till the end of 1.0's life. Only regret I have is I didn't record it, but at least I took some random screenshots for memories. :)

Yeah, I wish I would have recorded more back then, like when I decided I could run past Lvl 90 mobs to get to that beach in La Noscea (ouch, lol) or when I made it to Owl's Nest. Beating the White Raven was pretty special too.
Good times, in retrospect.

I feel the same way. I really should've taken more screenshots and video. I only really got to level 30 (just to get a Goobbue. XD), but I really had a lot of fun. One of the things I miss is probably the most boring: actually taking the ferry places, instead of using ferry skippers. Elevators too.

On the eve of our demise, a blinding bright light surrounded us and we found our selves in a different place where the scars of time were plain to see. Somehow we survived... But, at what cost?

Anyone remember the great Goubbue wall and when the city states were invaded? It was such an amazing event to have been part of 1.0 right through to the end. Still loving the Legacy Account Status! Although, reading the description of our Legacy Chocobo, I want to know when "a story for another time" will come! Kinda wish they would give some small nodd to us 1.0ers that are still hanging around.

These are amazing! That descending moon is so scary. Could you imagine seeing that from our own sky? Those of you still with us likely possess a strong empathy trait, and could feel that panic as your virtual world was on a similar path of obliteration. I know I would. And this is not something that another game or this game can repeat and have the same effect. This was a magic that could only be cast once. I am envious to tears. /hugsss

As for 1.0, I admit I didn't start til a few months after 1.0's launch (due to a combination of billing issues that took time to sort out with my bank and a family tragedy that naturally took an extended period to work through), and due to technical issues with my computer, I didn't play as much as I could have, however I did keep my account active even after fees were eventually turned on, ensuring that I attained Legacy Campaign eligibility, and thus made sure I was there the day that bloated scarlet rock finally came down... or at least I was there until I was booted half an hour from the end and couldn't log back in.

Not to be daunted, when Yoshi temporarily reinstated the 1.0 servers after 'the Calamity' (reset back to a month before Dalamud's fall) I decided to at least finish the 1.0 story (or at least, what I could do solo, in other words the original story not the 7th Umbral Era story) even though it wouldn't transfer, just so I could at least experience it. And I'm glad I did. I manage to get to level 50 solo in a little over a month by the last day of service on December 31st 2012 (even being distracted during that time by the ARR Alpha), when I finally put Enki to sleep in the Inn Room moments before Yoshi shut the game down forever, it seemed appropriate, as shown (note the 'goodbye and see you soon' notice from SE):

1.0 was a mess, that thoroughly deserved it's destruction and replacement with ARR which is a superior game, no doubt. But, it was a diamond in the rough that still had a few brief sparkles among it's many, many flaws and imperfections (flaws that despite valiant tinkering by master craftsman Naoki Yoshida most could not be fixed); I still miss certain things about 1.0 that I would love to have here in ARR (Path Companions for one). And I am still grateful I got to experience it when I did, even if there was much I could have still done.

So am I proud of my Mark of the Twelve and the Legacy Chocobo and my name with the 'Meteor Survivors' in the end credits, despite 1.0's problems, it was an experience that was literally, once in a lifetime, that FFXIV ultimately became stronger for. :)

I can say that, I was there since the countdown to logging in for the start of service to the end when "Connection Lost" popped up after service ended and enjoyed every moment!
I still have quite a few of my 1.0 gears and items, and my legacy title i always have set (from 1.0 little ladies day) which i get asked about all the time and usually ends up with players finding out about 1.0 for the first time.
Lots of things i miss, the animation was mind blowing, graphics and detail where extreme, and the fact you couldn't jump...

That's the best way I can express myself. Tears and a smile that are both happy and sad. I appreciate it so much that you took the time to dig up some old pics for me! They truly are a neat thing to have, and I honestly can't think of a better achievement even if others can list them by the dozen.

I am sorry to hear about some of the issues you encountered when starting out. But you made it through, and you are here now. I do hope you continue to play and support Final Fantasy. The best way I can atone for missing out is by doing the same. :)
