So, you named your character after lore conventions. What did you name them & why?

Disclaimer: please forgive me if this post is not appropriate for this forum (I'm guessing it is because it's lore-orientated).


Background story: it always drove me nuts that my character didn't have a name that suited Miqo'te naming conventions. In my head, he's from Ala Mhigo and all that jazz (there are 10% "others" in Ala Mhigo so I lumped moons with that). Finally found the listings here of the naming conventions and it was a godsend.

I think the examples were a lot better than what I came up with... I tried making a moon Miqo'te version of Alexis/Alexander and came up with Alxi'a (for two syllables + first son suffix). I struggled with which syllables to put together, so that's why I used Alexis/Alexander as my base. So, to me, my made-up name means "defender." I know some names are less "made up," but please share if you'd like to anyway.~

So, my questions to you guys are: if you named your character using lore conventions, what did you name them and why? What does this name mean to you?

For me i startet as a moon kitten and tried all races and genders till i found a home with as male Seawolf Roegadyn.
As it was my new home i wanted a fitting name fitting the lore name conventions and after a long night with my best friends and to much alcoholic drinks i had a long list of lets say humorous lore names.
I put up a straw poll and send the link to all of my friends and they decided.

So i got my name Baradaeg which means "naked warrior" and my last name is Ryssbhirsyn and means "son of giant bear" as a homage to my homeland Bavaria and one of my favorite drinks.

This has nothing to do with this thread, but it also means sky in norwegian^^

I named my Miqo in 1.0 long before SE released official naming conventions (though I could retcon her to be N'Aiyah I suppose), but I specifically named my Sea Wolf FemRoe.

Her name is Eyriwyda Bloesoemrwyn which means "Wandering Willow Blue Summer Daughter". Mostly because I just wanted a character with the surname Bluesummers and halfway through creation decided to make it "proper".

I named my character as close to my screen name as possible while staying within Xalea lore. I couldn't find the Mongolian word for "obsidian", so I went with the color of the rock. Khara (qara) means black. Gal means fire. So yes, my character has one of the most cliche "cool" names ever. It fits given she is primarily a summoner though...

I went with the Meirqid tribe as I like hotter climates and their thing of burying their supplies instead of taking them with them like everyone else is interesting. How do they find them again and how to they keep the other tribes from finding out or getting into them? It seemed like the kind of tribe that would be just as interested in magic as in martial prowess.

I started the game as a Hellsguard Roegadyn. As it happens, Hellsguard generally use pseudonyms crafted from common-language words, which fit well with my practice (dating back to FFXI) of naming myself using an anagram of my real-life name. Hence, I wound up with Lineage Razor, slightly atypical for a female Hellsguard (no plant imagery) but acceptable.

When I changed to a Xaela Au Ra, I wanted to change to a lore-appropriate name, as well. Unfortunately, none of the Xaela tribe names could be formed using the letters from my real-life name. Not even if I threw my middle name into the mix! So, with some regrets, I decided to stick with my original Hellsguard name after the change.

When I was changing my name I came up with what I have now, plus something people will notice is missing. Originally it was going to be Tokimi Tsuchimi, I was a Dunesfolk with Plainsfolk name not so odd. But the friend helping me at the time suggested I drop the first "mi" since he didn't like it, it sounded more like a girls name, irl not in game. So I dropped it, but I made a lore reason why. I come from a Limsan merchant family, dad, mom, older sister, twin sister. And we all have the naming conventions, kinda. Dad is a plainsfolk with a traditional name, similar with mom, dunesfolk with a traditional name. But us kids are reversed, I'm dunes with a plains name, sisters are plains with dunes names. But mom and pop gave us each a "pet name" based on our full name;usually just removing a syllable, but hey its something.

In the case of my main character, a midlander hyur, his lore-compliant name isn't particularly fancy in any way. But as was the case with all my RPG characters, it took a considerable amount of time before I came up with a name for him.

I started this game as far back as version 1.0. I had already decided that my midlander would begin in Limsa Lominsa. Based on what little I knew then of the city-state, I imagined it to be a fantasy version of early modern England, a martime society that was on the cusp of industrialisation.

So, the surname "Battersea" came easily: It's the name of a famous power station in London (that's now been converted into an art gallery). I chose it because of its literal reference to the sea, and for its historical association with industrialisation.

After that, it was a matter of coming up with a first name that would go well with "Battersea". I eventually settled on "Lyland" (liːlənd). The second syllable "-land" juxtaposed nicely with the "-sea" in Battersea. Moreover "Lyland" was inspired by an actual name, Leyland, which was associated with a variety of things in early industrial England. So, it was an apt fit overall for the character concept I had in mind.

I also chose lore-compliant names for Lyland's two retainers, the first and older of which I have since turned into an alt.

C'lafhina Tykha: Lafhina of the coeurl tribe, daughter of C'tykha Nunh. Her first name in full is pronounced as Kalafina. Yes, she's named after the famous Japanese vocal group. I'm a fan. :)

Kazaori: An au ra of the Raen clan, a Doman kunoichi dispatched to Lyland by Yugiri, shortly after the bloody banquet in Ul'dah. "Kazaori" is a rare, but actual professional name once used by Japanese courtesans (oiran). It means "bending in the wind (風折)", a metaphor for resilience. There's a backstory behind this, but I'll leave it at that for now.

Besides the two retainers, there's another major character in Lyland's backstory who doesn't feature in the main storyline, simply because she's already dead. She's Ahtynswys Denkyrdaegwyn (the "Sister who Judges", daughter of "Thinking Soldier", later known as Elildaeg, "Exiled Soldier"). Ahtynswys was Lyland's arcanist mentor, who was killed in the tsunami unleashed by Leviathan upon Western La Noscea about two or three years before the events of ARR. The massive tidal wave travelled as far south as the Ciedalaes, where Lyland comes from.

I didn't know about proper naming conventions until well after naming my characters, so I hover between "maybe I should fix that" and "changing their name now would be weird".

"Aurelie" is the only character name that does work - it's probably more an Elezen than Hyuran name, but I can justify that by her being Gridanian so there'd be some degree of cultural mixing there.

My other two characters just got names out of my mental box of "made-up fantasy names that sound kind of cool" so they're way off.

My Roegadyn girl is named Verdalyn which is... well, I don't think Roegadyn language even uses V, and the female names have those set endings. So I've been through the 'dictionary' list a few times hoping to assemble something that sounds similar to that, but also somewhat meaningful. Possibly "Frydlona" ('peaceful gatherer') or "Frydwyda" ('peaceful willow') as she doesn't like to fight. 'Willow' would also have the bonus association of tree -> Bole card/constellation -> protector symbolism as she's a tank.

And my Elezen character is named Amalthis (pronounced as written) because early on I'd only figured their names are 'long and fancy sounding' and I'm not good with French. I still have no idea what I'd rename him if anything.

Oddly enough though - I'd caught onto the French names at the point when I actually made him as a character in-game, and my characters have a running pattern of surnames ending with ___song, so I ran his through Google Translate for a passing attempt at lore-appropriateness.... and ended up with Terrechant which is actually a correct Duskwight surname. I didn't even know until later when I was messing around with the random name generator!

The name "Temujin" isn't particularly significant, and simply means "of iron," meant to symbolize her unyielding will and resilience. However, this has two hidden meanings behind it: Temujin is the birth name of Genghis Khan, and is also a historically male name. So it's meant to convey strength as well as intimidation, and clue knowledgeable people into the fact that the player behind Temujin is a girl. (I'd have tried to find something else, but repositories of 16th-18th century Mongolian names with their meanings are kind of in short supply, and I don't really know Mongolian, heheh.)

(Only one person has made half of the connection. Despite wearing conservative clothing and a short haircut out of practicality, I've still been complimented / hit on a few times.)

For the tribe, I went with the Haragin because they sound relatively normal and their legend has a call to adventure in it. Temujin set out to find the mythical land covered in grey monoliths and inhabited by fire-breathing steel demons, but has a bad sense of direction and stumbled into Eorzea during her travels before being swept up in the events of the story.

My original character and name, Cilia Grayve, was a Highlander Hyur whose name was simply pulled out of the RNG; I changed to an Au Ra at 3.0's launch. For a brief moment in Heavensward I changed to a Sea Wolf Roegadyn named Wakkahtyn Rhotarsyn ([A]woken Judge, Son of the Red Eagle; meant as a pseudonym for someone who had a past in crime but decided to dedicate his life to justice), and before that I had pretty much the same character / avatar as I do now, just with the forename "Temulun" instead. (Happily the name change alleviated the issue of being confused with the khatun of the Mol once we finally got to the Steppe.)

All but my original main (wasn't my first character, but was the first I capped on) use naming conventions now after I discovered the random name generator uses the established rules to generate its names when I was creating an Elezen alt (a name I've since retired here but still use frequently in other games).

While most of my time is spent on my main, I do have the others if I feel like running around (at this point it's literally just running around, haven't taken the time to level with them yet) as a different race for a bit (easier on the wallet than fantasias when the mood strikes me, heh).

My main, Ciara Dorne, is an altered spelling of Keaira Dorne, which is one of the names generated for Hyur Midlanders, and might be the only one that uses the generated pairing. With the others I ended up taking a generated first name and pairing it with a generated last name. The original character design features dark hair (and depending on the hair I'm using it goes back to dark), and as the name is a feminine version of Ciaran, which can (apparently) mean dark-haired, the name felt like a good fit.

For the rest of the names, it's just names I like the sound of and think I can pronounce with little trouble.

Elezen (Wildwood) - Sophiane Lothaire
Keeper - Khloe Zhwan (finding an unused pairing in this was really, really difficult).

I always strive to adhere to the established naming conventions in any given setting. I don't like playing characters that feel disconnected from their surroundings.

I chose 'Ryuji Akagane' as my character's name since it adheres to what we'd expect for a character that resides in Hingashi. I didn't do much research into the name itself and simply picked what sounded good from a list of Japanese first and last names. As it turns out, they fit perfectly.

'Ryuji' can translate to 'governor dragon' or 'next dragon'.

'Akagane' translates to 'copper'.

Let's just say that he's a very driven individual when it comes to advancing Hingashi's interests and who is also deeply spiritual and reveres the Kami. If it ever came down to it and he was forced to rely on sheer desperation to succeed then he'd likely try and turn himself into an Eikon...and it'd likely take on the visage of some sort of fire dragon. :p

My name is just a transliteration of my original Hyur name, Selena Grayve. When i finally made a Roe I liked, I kept it as close as I could.

Both 'Anloix' and 'Etiegeant' are just syllables mashed together to make a French-sounding name.

My alts are :

Ix'ajaw Inihk. I have had a character named Ixajaw through all of my MMOs as an Ix-ajaw was the term for a Mayan female ruler. I just added an apostrophe and made my own clan the Ix to justify it as a lore name lol.

Qulangan Buduga. First name means 'white steel' because he is a big strong boy with white hair and eyes. It is so on the nose because I imagine that he was renamed when he joined the Buduga. I chose the Buduga two years ago (I was a Buduga before it was cool) because I was originally going to RP as a Borlaaq, but I cannot see female Au Ra as anything but weird looking. So, I did the reverse. Call me naive, but I was not expecting the amount of /tells I get now that SB has hit.

I made the Dokfel first based on the Rockbell family from FMA. Changed some letters and made the first name acording to the plainsfolk rules!

Prefacing by stating I started out as a Mooncat with a Mooncat-based name, and became known by said name and didn't want to change it as a result. XP

Miyha is essentially a Miqo'te-fied version of "Mia" (both pronounced mee-yah btw), a name I've used in the past. Manaya just happened to be the last name of a favorite boss in a previous MMO I played (Shandra Manaya from TERA), and its spelling patterns seemed like it could work as one of the "lesser Keeper tribes" referenced in the lore. How I explain this name being attributed to an Au Ra: she was adopted. |D

Her birth name I decided is Kahlan Kagon, Kagon being the moon-worshipping tribe of Xaela residing in the Nhaama Desert, and Kahlan being a favorite character in one of my favorite books, also a possible spelling variant of Khulan, a wife of Genghis Kahn.

Rin is my usual online alias I had even before knowing anything about lore-appropriate names, which by a stroke of luck also fit Raen naming conventions. I chose Aomine ("blue peak") because blue is my favourite colour, and I liked the imagery and kanji associated with it (青峰.)

I'd never actually seen or heard of KB before choosing it, which is where most people assume it's from, lol.

My main is a Sea Wolf Roegadyn, and his name means "Bent Choir, son of Hollow Castle". I did have the help of a (now-defunct) name generator, but there wasn't any particular reason behind choosing his name other than the fact I wanted something authentic sounding for the official launch of the game-- I had named the same character in Beta as Hyurrim Greysky.


My alt is a Midlander by name of Chaucer Shawnes, named after the famous English poet Geoffrey Chaucer.

It was pure coincidence that Keeper of the Moon's have "human" names for the most part. While I lack a few h's my name technically fits all the same.

Ahldruht is a fairly veteran adventurer, one from the beginning of the Age of the Adventurer some twenty years ago so the name Old Smoke seems quite appropriate.

Whenever I start an MMO I make a "trial" character based off of one of my own characters, without looking at the Lore, so my first, Johannes Lenneth was mostly named after myself and as a nod to Valkyrie Profile. Afterwards I made my "alt" which became my main in Faerie: Samniel Atkascha, first name is made up and one of my fictional characters (I wanted a gender-neutral form of combining both the male Samuel with the female Samantha, the -el suffix normally being angelic in use and which means "of God"), last name is a reference to Ivalicean Royalty, specifically Princess Ovelia.

Then in 3.0 I went Au Ra and wanted a more Lore-appropriate name so I changed it to Ranmaru Stormcaller, Ranmaru from Mori Ranmaru, Nobunaga Oda's page/alleged male lover, and Stormcaller as something similar to Yugiri Mistwalker's epithet: as a (then) Summoner, I wished to convey that I was calling up the storm against my foes (was then hoping for a Ramuh-egi). When Stormblood, and more specifically, Ivalice, got announced, I switched back to the now-somewhat-lore appropriate Samniel Atkascha (XIV and Ivalice-lore wise, the Atkascha bloodline would have gone extinct with Ovelia, and most definitely be hyuran instead of miqo'te but I'm bending that one as far as it can go).

I never follow the lore conventions, but sometimes I can change my character's background in order to justify it.
The lore-friendly, birth name of Meru Aradan was Merune Vergel. There is no hidden meaning in this name, I only try to fit it in the convention.

The names of my lalafell and au ra are another story.
Since the times of Lineage2 I call my femal dwarf as Itemspoilerasi (an enzyme for farm spoil of hunt), so the lalafellin name formed from the word "Item" was Itetemo Temo.

The Au Ra's name is a full compliancy xaela name: Shunai Torgud. Shunai is the Google-translation of flame becase the fire is her theme. Red and yellow the flame, black the ember. Torgud... I just pick one clan from the list, without looking. It's turned to be the nudist clan. Oh well...

I followed the Sindarin naming convention because...well, Elezens are like Elves..? xD
Duv started as a male Duskwight, with deep dark blue skin, so I named him something like "beautiful darkness" "misty ocean"--> Duvainor Hithaeron.
when I fantasia'd to female, had to change the first name to Duvaineth :)

My old name was Evan Ornitier as BLM when i first started this game.
And then changed to hyur and changed name to evan rosen cuse it fitted more to a hyur.
Now im bell elvy... krile is my inspiration for not using name convention lol.

I named my lalafell Kurumi Kururugi. It was actually the name I used for my character in the Inuyasha: Secret of the cursed mask game. It just so happened it was a conventional lala name.

"Ryuji" was constructed following the Naming Conventions claim that "For the most part, [male Raen names] have a strong link to things in nature which are believed to be strong, agile, or even uncontrollable." I wanted it to be an actual existing name, and I liked contrasting imagery, so I ended up with 流 (Flow) and 地 (Earth), which together can be read as Ryuji. In backstory terms, this is a reading that Ryuji gave to his own name, the original being 龍二.*

As for "Hinoto": during the lead-up to Heavensward, it was suggested that old Japanese battleship names might make a good starting point for Raen surnames, and though there isn't one called the Hinoto, there is one called "Teibou" (丁卯). I was drawn in mostly by the meaning - it's an astrological term for part of the Chinese sexagenary cycle - but I also liked the sound of its alternate reading (Hinoto) as a surname. Using the Naming Conventions, I constructed a backstory of the Hinoto clan once being a part of a warlord's Sixty Armies, each of which was named after one part of the cycle; though he was defeated and his armies scattered, the Hinoto army was one that banded together as a clan and continues to exist as such in the present time.

A fun bit of head-canon I adopted when writing Ryuji's backstory was that, in the times of antiquity when they first encountered and assimilated into Hingan/Doman culture, many Raen were given names that began with 龍 because of their appearance. Meanwhile, 二 - pronounced "ji" in this case - was a common suffix for second sons in the Edo period, where Raen names take influence from. Ryuji is the second son in his birth family, and his father was a traditionalist, hence 龍二. Some time after Ryuji was disowned by his birth family and adopted into the Hinoto clan as a ward, he selected the 流地 version himself. Incidentally, his original family name was Akinai (商), which means "trade" or "business" - this was a name selected by his previously-nameless father, a man who had risen to become a very wealthy merchant in pre-Garlean Othard and thus a part of the surname-having aristocracy, meant to evoke a sense of complete domination over his profession.

I named mine after one of my favorite characters from a anime series.

If I did, which I am unsure as I never looked up highlander naming conventions, it was accidental as "Ritza Solair" has been the name for all my main fem avi's for years now (on a side note "Ritza" &/or "Ritsa" I believe is Greek for "Defender of mankind")

Romilda is an ancient Germanic name meaning "famous battle" and Rayne is a Germanic surname using the element "ragin" meaning "advice" or "counsel." I like alliterative names, though I'm aware it also sounds like that one witch from Harry Potter who tried to drug him.

Jin Mitsurugi's surname follows Raen naming conventions. Mitsurugi (御剣) means "heavenly sword." His chosen given name, Jin (仁), is one of the eight virtues of Bushido, and means "benevolence" or "compassion." The name he was given at birth was Ryunosuke (龍之介), meaning "dragon's herald."

Victoire Vaillancourt comes from the French form of Victoria, which is a Latin name meaning "victory," and a French surname mostly found in Quebec that means "low-lying farm."

Adamantia Argentum is a Latinized variant of the Greek "ἀδάμας" meaning "invincible." In Latin, it refers to diamonds, or the mythical metal adamant known for its impenetrable hardness. Her surname is the Latin "argentum" meaning "silver," and is a reference to Prompto Argentum, who is also a friendly, blonde machinist from his game's Empire. When she still served the imperial army, her title was "jen," which refers to an Architectus: a field engineer, sapper, and pilot.

Valerie Voss is an English and German feminine form of the Latin name Valerius, which means "to be strong." Her surname, Voss, is a Low German name meaning "fox." As she's a red mage, I felt Valerie would connect to Valentine, conveying the color red, and that her surname would evoke the image of Zorro, that masked vigilante known for using a rapier.

Namimi Nami follows Plainsfolk naming conventions but also has some hidden meanings in Japanese. Her Doman tutors have informed the young kunoichi that the word "nami" means "wave" and "minami" means "south." As Llymlaen, goddess of navigation and guardian deity of Nami's homeland, Limsa Lominsa, is represented by the wave, she took a liking to it. Likewise, her lineage hails from the south sea isles. She sometimes flips the characters while operating in the Far East, creating the pseudonym "Nanba" (南波) or "southern wave."

As someone mentioned before, Khara is a Mongolian name meaning "black." Thus, Khara Kagon is a rather too appropriate name for a Xaela who wields black magic. As she was illiterate when she arrived in Eorzea, Khara chose the spelling of the name herself.

Red Beast is a Hellsguard name, and is thus derived from the Roegadyn name "Rhotroeg," the unflattering name given to her by her father when her birth took her mother's life. It means "red monster" but she chooses to translate it as "Red Beast" for mercenary work.

Well, my name has nothing to do with canon race naming conventions, but this seems like a general name explanation thread at this point.

Muteki in Japanese for invincible. That's the name I chose for FFXI, but it was already taken, so I added a "maru" which is a common suffix for boy's names.
I carried this name over to FFXIV and decide on the last name of "Godhand" based on the reoccurring Monk weapon in the series, since I always play Monk. I'm also a big fan of the PS2 game "Godhand" but this had nothing to do with the name.

Originally, I played FFXI tarutaru for 6 years and settled with Deli__ name for a while. To me, should be pronounced as Deli- __, but people kept pronounced it as De-like-__.
So, at FF14 I just simplified it as Deli.
I settled with Roegadyn since 1.0 beta. I realized as a Roe can see so far instead of lots floor in my screen... Fortunately, Hellsguards' first name can be anything, so it's prefect for me. Deli ______.

I looked at the Roegadyn Dictionary for a long time to find the loop hole for a shorter last name. Denkryst was the final result that I think it might work.

Denkryst should be "Thinking Crystal" Denkyr + Kryst but it will be too long as Denkyrkryst, just in case someone want to type my full name. I see I can play a trick as the Denkyr switch the yr and merge together with Kryst. Thus, after switched a little and shorten it became Denkryst.

Or you can think it as "Think + n + Crystal" rule but missed n and additional k Denknkryst

My other char from other account was a female Roe, she is Ramen (friend gave me his account for 5 years(my sidekick) at FFXI too) Denkgeim. Ramen Think-Jewel.

Brielle Artemus is the name of a graphic novel character. The former Greek goddess Artemis who took the forename Brielle to honor her husband, the former archangel Gabriel. Who then took the surname Artemus in honor of Brielle.

Since they were married, Brielle inherited that surname as well. Thus becoming Brielle Artemus.

Ironically, I find the name works well in the Final Fantasy universe. Especially considering in the book, Brielle is known as the Phaesporia, meaning the Light-bringer.

In this game she is the Warrior of Light, also referred to as the Light-bringer. Imagine my surprise when I saw that. Had no idea that’s who the player character was when I made this character. :-)

I found out about the lore names in the long wait between the closed and open beta, and since i wanted to role play with my character i decided such a lore name would be nice.

I am a female Plainsfolk Lalafell. My name is Karuru Karu.

To find that name i was going through all the syllables you can build with just 2 letters, starting at Aa, over Ti, until i finally reached Zu. I was writing down all the syllables wich i found had a nice sound. After that was done, I started to combine all that nice sounding syllables and again writing down wich sounded nice together. Eventually only Ka and Ru were left and so i got my name \^^/ And I still like it 5 years later.

But I want to mention that I am german, wich means that the pronunciation is a bit different as when you speak the syllables / name in english.

When I started in ARR I was a Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te and my name was Senah Moshroca. I used a name generator, but it was lore accurate. I changed to a Xaela Au Ra for Heavensward and changed my last name to be lore accurate, but I kept Senah because by that time everyone was used to it.

I retconned my rp backstory to have lore reasons for having a Keeper name. Senah’s family is pretty typical for Khas: they live on the outskirts of Xaela land and seek out contact with non Auri peoples. Senah grew up in a poly household with an Au Ra mother, an Au Ra father, and a Keeper of the Moon Mi'qote father, hence her first name following Keeper conventions rather than Xaela conventions.

This could be interesting. I have lots of alts with their own story, but I love them all. As time passed, their names became closer to the naming conventions so here I come.

First, the Guardians of Light's side.

Faith Sol'une (X'wyhn Lehn) [WHM]
Faith, the Warrior of Light is my main character, a Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te. She was the first character I made, and then I did not know about naming conventions. She was made to resemble my favorite Final Fantasy character, Hope Estheim (FFXIII), so since she was female I gave her the name "Faith", and as for Sol'une it is a corruption for "sun" and "moon" in Latin.

Later I decided to give Faith a backstory, so I gave her her birth name, X'wyhn Lehn. She is from the Lynx tribe mainly because lynxes are my second favorite animal. She was born in Meracydia, in a coastal village named Sol'une that was decimated by a plague with only her, the future Warrior of Light, as a survivor. She was adopted by an Elezen family that lived in an island south of Sharlayan, and they gave her the name "Faith". She is technically Faith Girbois, since she is formally part of the family, but she took the name of her birthplace as an adventurer.

Yansa Ru'shi [NIN]
Yansa is my Xaela Auri ninja, and as for her she is not entirely true to the naming conventions but she has backstory. Yansa is the name of the Yoruba goddess of sorcery and wife to Shango, god of thunder and war. As for Ru'shi, it is the romanization for l'Cie, a term of FFXIII and Type-0. Basically, the Ru'shi tribe is a relatively recent one that lives in seclusion in the Fanged Crescent and pursues intelectual enlightment, and they are made of outcasts from other Xaela tribes but only children born amidst the tribe earn the right to have the surname Ru'shi.

Leona Wyznloef (Wyznloef "Leona" Alyrsthalwyn) [BRD]
Leona is a Hellsguard Roegadyn, and her "surname" is actually her name. She is from Thavnair, so she does not follow your usual Hellsguard naming convention, even though they are just basically the translated names of Sea Wolves. She is a renowned bard and mercenary and she is usually referred to as "Wyznloef the Lioness" or simply "Leona Wyznloef", so she basically ran with it. Wyznloef means "white leaf".

Lyanne Blanchateau [RDM]
Lyanne is a Duskwight Elezen hailing from the Cieldalaes, yet her father Feliciaint was a native of the Black Shroud with Gelmorran ancestry. Lyanne is a name I simply liked, and Blanchateau, well, is a bit of an inside thing of the FFXIII trilogy.

Samra & Mikhel (Rhyu'a) Shir'valah [SAM/BLM]
The Shir'valah siblings! They are Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te. Samra is the older sister, whose name means "ruler" in I-do-not-remember-which-language, and Mikhel's uncommon name comes from their adoptive parents, who named him after his late father, Mikh'to Zhwan, though of course his birth name is Rhyu'a, since their mother was Rhyu Shir'valah. Shir'valah is a made-up Keeper of the Moon surname, and it is based on a now deleted ability of World of Warcraft druids that would allow them to become a half-panther humanoid, and it was called the "Claws of Shirvallah".

Ryuzan Kyouko [PLD]
A Raen Auri paladin from Hingashi, Ryuzan's name is kinda Japanese sounding, and of course it has the "ryu" part that means "dragon". As for his surname, Kyouko, I do not know how old it sounds, but still, it is the first name of one of the main characters of Danganronpa, Kyo(u)ko Kirigiri.

Joana (bas) Strome [MNK]
Yes, she is a Highlander Hyur monk with a Garlean naming convention. Her Ala Mhigan family fleed from the Garlean invasion into Ilsabard, and then they settled there and became acknowledged citizens of the Empire. Joana is a fairly straightforward name, as for Strome, it is like an old-English like spelling of "storm", which I felt appropriate for a monk.

Nagi Uranai [AST]
The Warrior of Shadow, a Raen Auri astrologian who was born in Sui-no-Sato and abandoned by her parents in the Azim Steppe because they thought her shadow powers and dark skin in a Raen were a bad omen. She was found by the Iriq and adopted by their khan. In Japanese, "nagi" ナギ is a word for a lull in a storm, and "uranai" means prediction/divination.

Khaara Iriq [MCH]
Nagi's adoptive sister, a Xaela Auri machinist, who bodyguards and protects her wherever she goes. She, of course, is of the Iriq tribe, and her name, though corrupted, comes from "kara", which in Irish means "friend" or "love".

Victoriel Matiere [WHM?]
A Wildwood Elezen and descendant of heretics, Victoriel is a healer but still has not found his true calling and potential. His name (and all of his family's) is based on a French artist/writer I like; in his case, it is Victor Hugo. Matiere is the name of a character in Pokémon X/Y, but overall it is a rather common French name/surname.

Dhemswys Swarnahctwyn [DRG]
Of course, Dhemswys, or Dhemie for short, is a Sea Wolf Roegadyn. She comes from the islands in the North and is part of the Shadow Hunters, though she went to Ishgard to train further in the lance and ended up being the first Roegadyn that was accepted as a dragoon. Dhemswys means "dusk sister" (her older sister is Trachswys, "dragon sister") and her father's name Swarnahct means "black night".

L'nhei Mhaat & L'zhai Tia [WAR/SMN]
And these are the Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te twins! Treasure hunters and last members of a fraction of the L tribe that settled in the Dalmasca Desert. Since they are twins, their names are meant to sound similar, though their father's name, L'mhaat, comes from the Ancient Egyptian term of "maat", which was both the word and the goddess of justice. Oh!, and they are from the L tribe, which is, the Vipers. That is because my favorite animal are snakes.

Aina Roig i Valls (Aina Roig) [DRK]
A Midlander Hyur that hails from a particularly isolated village in the New World that has its own naming conventions and customs. Actually, all their names are common Valencian (a dialect of Catalan) names. Aina is the Valencian spelling of "Anna", and her surnames Roig and Valls mean respectively "red" and "valleys".

Yrere Yre [SCH]
And finally, the Plainsfolk Lalafell scholar, Yrere Yre, hailing from Sharlayan but student at the Magitek Academy in Garlemald. Names are rather limited if you want to stick close to the Lalafell naming conventions, but I found Yrere's name pretty endearing.

So there they are. All sixteen for now. When new jobs come out, more characters shall join. And I will be able to give poor Victoriel a proper job instead of being a WHM just like my main.

Great name! My Xaela's name is Galqar. I wanted it to be "Dark Fire" because I was originally planning to make him a DRK, and I figured I'd go all in with the edgelord thing. (Turns out, I never could overcome my tanxiety), but oh well. I went with the noun-adjective construction because I liked the way it sounded, and since we're told that things like spelling vary widely, I thought it made sense that pronounciations and naming conventions might have varying dialects.

My headcanon is that in his tribe, children don't get their permanent names until they're a year old, at which point the parents take them to the shaman, who reads the stars to determine what their name should be. In Galqar's case, his name reading indicated that his curiosity would be both his glory (fire) and despair (dark). His backstory is that he was kidnapped by Imperials after running out to look at a passing Imperial ship instead of hiding with the rest of the tribe. Ultimately, this set him on the path to becoming the WoL.

As far as the tribe, I chose the Haragin because I live on the Pacific Coast of the US and I love it, and also because I liked their lore snippet. I've come up with a ton of headcanon about them where they believe they are the children of the Dusk Mother and the sea (which explains the moon's influence over the tides), and that they never show up to the Naadam because they're happy to hang on the coast and sail and fish. Most of their fishing is done with a spear, which explains why Galqar started out as a lancer.

Julien Lefaucon: Duskwight Elezen with a Google Translated French for "Julian Hawke", my Dragon Age 2 character.

Zizig Mol: A Lalafell who's name literally means "Small" in Mongolian. He was rescued as an infant after a natural disaster by the Mol dude who served as a mercenary, and grew up on the Steppes.

Qih'sae Nbolo: Keeper Miqo'te who's a sixth son. People made all kinds of snide remarks about his mother being unlucky for having six male children.

Midnight Heron: Hellsguard Roe from Doma. Her real name is something different; her father used to call her his "little heron" and she's got dark skin and hair, so that's what she chose when she adopted a new name after leaving home.

My Au Ra ninja is named Yu Daiyu, but I actually have a question about that for anyone that's fluent in Mandarin and/or Chinese culture. The lore behind the character is that she's actually an empress-in-waiting who will one day take her place in the Ziwei Star (the North Star) to watch over The Way as the new Jade Empress, which comes from Taoism.

But I think her name should actually be Yu Daiyu Huanghou. Which would mean the "Black Jade Empress" if I'm not mistaken. Is that correct?
