How the heck do Atmas work?

I'm currently in the middle of farming Atmas for the Thyrus Atma, but i'm extremely confused as to how the Atmas work. I got 7 back as Dragoon before forgetting about it and continuing with the story; now, i still have those 7, but when i helped a friend out with a fate- i was a White Mage by then- i got a duplicate Atma, which confused me. So then, i figured that i was meant to get all of them again as White Mage, but i haven't gotten any more Atmas from, say, the Central Shroud since. Was the drop rate lowered again? Am i wasting my time getting old ones? Was the duplicate a bug? Or is that just something that can happen?

It's currently set up to require ONE Atma per map. So once you've obtained the Atma for that map, you can leave it and move on to the next area. Some Atma will pop right away, and some will take a while I noticed. I did all of my Atma for my ARR Relic a month or two ago, and it took two or three days because some Atma took an hour+to finally drop. But for those two or three that took awhile, at least the same amount would appear after one FATE.

And the duplicates? I get that there's one unique one per map; but i got a duplicate. Is that because i got them ORIGINALLY as a different class or no?

Several reasons. One being that you got the duplicate in the past when more than one of each was required. I'm under the impression that Atmas aren't tied to a class, so you should be able to use that duplicate for a second weapon down the line.

They arent tied to a class indeed. If you keep farming them you could get like 10 atma's from the same area.
That is pretty useless as you only need 1 for each weapon from each area these days.
You dont even need to be as the class you are doing weapon for, you can be any class and still get those drops if i remember right. Only requirement is to have the quest active.

Pretty much the extras can be used for other relics depending if your into relics or not. If not just trash them. To get them to drop you have to use the Zenith weapon though. Afterwards you will able to use them to farm Alexandrites, however maps are better for that. Everything has been nerfed sooo much so unless your getting glamour for zodiac, you can really just go to next stage anima from HW areas and skip these. Or if high enough Eureka.

I would say almost everything. Not sure if the books were nerfed at all...but those are still tedious especially for the FATEs needed(thankfully if you're way over geared, even getting synced down to the level, you can kill some of them SUPER fast - like the crocodile thing in Coerthas, got out of a dungeon and had 1:34 left on its timer, killed it as BLM with 0:30 roughly left).

If your high enough level you can solo them with most jobs, or use squadrons for anima ones. Either that or ask for FC assistance as unsync. Would be over in 10 min or so maybe less.

The dungeons aren't really the problem with the books, it's the FATEs which could take over an hour to spawn(not sure if one spawned while I was AFK eating dinner...but when I came back it wasn't up for another 15min or so...and it was the last thing for that book)

You are aware they do spawn more often now -.-; you can just craft while waiting. Not SE fault for being away. Time management helps -.-; Be glad your not doing fates or S class NM's in Hunts LS usually go down in 30 secs or less in older content. Except Odin he does take a while.

once you unlock atma quest you can collect as many of each atma as you want, just need to meet the requirement of having correct weapon equip to clear Fates. then spend the atma on any jobs you want. the item isn't locked to a job.
