BST/TRN Tank Class

So I loved Beast Master from FFXI. I didn't get to play it much, but it was fun.

I'd love to play BST in FFXIV as well, but in the end I am not sure that the class would really fit as good as it could the way most people want it.

Capturing and Taming a wild monster would be fun to do and would be fun to run around with, but in the end I feel like the nature of FFXIV would sort of ruin that experience. There are a lot of factors that go into this game and in the end I don't think having BST work like it did in FFXI would fit with this game.

However, there is another game with a class that is similar, and that is Trainer from FFX-2. Yeah it's not the same but it is still similar. It gives you a pet creature that you use in battle. It is also a little like SMN yes, but it still has unique abilities that differ between the three characters.

So anyway, with BST and TRN as references, I can see a BST/TRN class on FFXIV working a little like a mix between the two classes.

You have only one pet. This pet is given to you at the start when you get your Soul Crystal. Your weapon is a Whip. From the start every quest is you bonding with your pet while also gaining other pets(off gcd skills) to help you in battle.

As for how it'd work as a tank, you wouldn't be able to move the pet like you would a SMN or SCH or MCH. Instead, you'd have stances. Your Offensive Stance has the Pet to your side and your Defensive Stance has the Pet in front of you.

When in Offense, your pet is the main attacker. Your abilities are using your whip to rouse and command your pet into action.

In Defense, your pet is taking the Brunt of the Damage, it does not have a health bar of its own and instead just lessens the damage you take by being your 'shield'.

Your Off Global Cooldown attacking or active defense skills would be calling forth other creatures to strike or protect.

tldr: Beastmaster/trainer that ditches capturing monsters for a single monster that is given to you at the start. Doesn't work like SMN/SCH because pet moves with you not separately. Defensive stance has pet working like a damage buffer, reducing what damage you take. Offensive stance has pet standing next to you working as extra damage. Weapon is Whip. Off GCD are other monsters summoned for an attack or brief barrier.

Here are some other bits I'd enjoy for you pet, but they'd probably be harder to implement.

• Naming your pet
• Different weapons changing pet appearance a bit
• 3 types of 'beasts' for your pet to be
• Pet interaction emotes

Just a couple things that would help the class be more entertaining.

Im imagining a system where depending on what you do to enhance the offensive/defensive capabilities of your pet, doing it too much has a negative effect on it. For example, whipping it to hard to enable it to attack more leaves it more prone to damage when entering into defensive stance. Your other cool downs would mitigate these effects, or certain animals can be summoned to keep it within flavor.

That would be a very cool addition to it while making it different enough from the other tank classes. Very nice.

I can imagine a little pet story in a future city where we can get pet glams :P. This is a really cool idea and anything that allows beast master in the game without the beast functioning like smn's summons is top priority :P

I think its a bad idea. Mainly cuz of the dev team not your post. The reason is that the devs seem to REALLY dislike pets and refuse to update the system. Chocobos were abandoned, Summoner/ Scholar pets are basically a joke that passively do everything on their own more or less and ppl have forgotten MCH even exist. When Yoshi P was asked about updating the basic pet controls he flat out refused to in the interview. Its not a bad idea its just unworkable with the level of effort the devs put in, sorry to rain on your parade.

just give it aura-like stances akin to some dude named Udyr from some bad MOBA.

Please no, not in this game at least. Half the time I’m on SMN pet actions don’t register and I miss out on burst windows for dps. Imagine having those sort of issues as a tank. I’m glad people have these ideas, it’s creative fun. Though these pet tank ideas will never work in this game.

I feel like a couple of the comments didn't actually read my post and just disliked the idea of Beast Master.

I like see Puppetmaster be more tank pet job class I would also like move away for ffxi for concept. it been done with puppetmaster it be easy build a concept a migration tank. transfer damage to puppetmaster, with beastmaster have fill role of dps, and have ability tame pets limit the roles and family.

dps

medium to large such as tiger, drake melee dps
big cats

large extra large tank family.
tricetops and gorrillas and t-rex and mammoth

with puppetmaster the weapons could puppet control stick migrate damage to mammets

I still think blue mage would make fine tank be aim avoidance damage

I want to point out, that the idea is not a pet class tank, but a tank with the flavor of a pet class.

There are no pet actions, but actions that are acted out by the 'pet'. It's no different from a Paladin's Sword or a Warrior's Ax. The stances are just your standard defense or offense, just signaled by the 'pet' either standing in front or to the side of the character.

It is your auto-attack, it performs the actions you press as if it was your weapon on a different tank. It does not act on it's own, it does not need seperate actions to do things.

The 'pet' is your tank weapon, not an actual Pet with Pet AI.

You just equip a whip as your 'Main Weapon' and any movement that the whip does is just flair, as if the movements are controlling the 'pet' and other 'pets' that are global skills.


BST/TRN that I suggest, once again, is not a pet tank, but a tank with a pet flair.

I don't think the pet tank will work

the goal is have weapon is so you switch to that weapon. I like to move away ffxi concept ffxiv need stand on it own. in ffxi the beast master is tank job let move toward make it dps jobs

That seems like a waste of the Beastmaster concept if you ask me.
I'd much rather they work on improving pet AI, then implement a BST DPS class.

If they want to improve pet ai then I'm all for it but I'm not gunna be sour grapes if they don't because I'm not sure they can at this point. This job idea simply just gives us the flavor of bst in ff14 without the clunkiness of the current pet ai.

That's easier said than done, if they haven't fixed pet ai clunkiness by now there must be some sort of issue that is preventing them from doing so.

What do we think is issue had how do you suggest one solve the issue

In FF3 or FF5 (not sure which), BST and BLU had some sort of synergy where taming/controlling a monster helped draining Blue Magic from a said creature. I also believe Yoshi described that he imagines BLU being a monster expert. With all that being said I can see a BST/BLU whip wielding pet tank being a possibility.

my view of blue mage is avoidance tank with focus on use they blue magic to improve and increase it ability to dodge attack. when I look bst I see it more as dps pet job similar to wow hunter but not same it would more focus medium to short ranger melee. I could see beast master have hull break isle as his or her quest hub as also place to keep one pets.
