Red Mage Skills in 5.0 [Fun Suggestions]

Welp. Hubby is letting me post this cuz Im bored waiting for 4.2. Added cheaply edited Skill icons to reduce boredom.

Red Mage is a quirky utility support DPS with a very straight forward mechanic. Get to 80/80 and melee combo. I wanted to expand on this system, while adding more support options and focusing on Single Target upgrades opposed to the AOE route. Adjustments at a lower level could change that.

74 - Ability- Indemnity:Restores target for 200 potency while reducing magic damage taken by 5% and applying a heal over time for 12 seconds. Regen potency 70. Duration 12 seconds.Cool down of 60 seconds. [Total healing potency of 480.]

76- Trait- Red Blur - Displacement and Corps-a-Corps have their potency increase to 190 from 130. Additional effects granted for each. Corps-a-corps reduces Emnity generated by 25% for 15 seconds. Displacement reduces current emnity by 25%. [Allows for disuse of Diversion, letting the RDM use Erase or Apocastasis in place. This change is in anticipation for 5 role skills again.)

78- Ability- Equipoise: Can only be used when under the effect of Impact, Verstone, or Verfire. Removes each of the status effects. Black and White mana gained equal to the spell procs consumed. Upon completion, If White mana is lower, Verstone is procced and if Black is lower VerFire and Equal, Impact is procced. Damage dealt proportionate to procs consumed.

1 Proc= 150 potency.
2 Proc= 250 potency.
3 Proc= 400 potency.
Ability cd 30 seconds Physical damage.

Really want the last spell if only for the name. It would have a large amount of utility, having to reach 100-92, and 88-80 in order to Holy/Flare -> Verbatim without unbalancing your mana.

Only one I outwardly dislike is Vercure 2: the less healer mechanics RDM actually has, I feel, the better. I would maybe replace it with Verflood/Verblizzard, which are aoe equivalents of holy and flare used after three enchanted moulinets. Faster acceleration would add a unique twist to things, and aid in the game of "The Floor is Jolt 2". Equipose, likewise, is a unique ability which would add some thinking to storing up procs, which I also like.

Question about Verbatim, does that count for Holy/Flare? I can see one of its strongest uses being a doubling up of that particular spell.

The idea is for RDMs to cast it during points of invulnerability, like during stacks for tentacles for exdeath or during omega. The regen carries onto the battle. I feel RDMS should continue to get "upgrades" to their healing without going out of bounds. A regen keeps dualcast in check and an aoe lets it remain relatively weak but relevant.

Yes, you could and should double VerHoly/VerFlare, but you could imbalance your mana so you want to set yourself up for that by being 100/88 and porpotional below to 92/80. The cool down of 15 seconds lets you give it other uses like a second raise, another VerAero or VerThunder to help build or when you really have to move and dont have a dualcast or a Swifcast.


EDIT I WROTE THE WRONG POTENCY ON THE REGEN. KNOCKED BACK TO 50. Meant to write Base heal of 100, regen of 50. Makes dualcasting it 200 potency with 15 x 50 over a 15 second period which is meh, but ok. 450 potency of healing over the course of 15 seconds with a 5 second cast time or 350 potency over 15 seconds with 2.5 second cast time.

I'm one of those red mages who really dislikes the healer mechanics we already have, so I have a bias coming into this both regarding this and using Verbatim to repeat the raise spell (I am an advocate away from the dualcast raise as it is).

As far as things to cast during invuln, Vercure 1 works perfectly fine for that. As opposed to most of the other buffs which I liked, this one adds no strategic thoughtplay into the job; it's just a spell that does what another already does, albeit better. The issue is, in order to balance for it having an aoe regen, the devs in this hypothetical would bring down RDM's dps potential, all for an ability that would be useless past world first progression really, as past that healers have all the healing needing done covered.

As far as their healing needing upgrades as we go further in, I would disagree. As it is, the best equivalent vercure has to another caster would be manawall, or to a melee, second wind, as that is their self-sustain. It's already a fairly potent heal for a DPS to have in the first place, IMO.

In that case, I really do like that. It creates a lot of forethought needed in how one approaches the situation, and they could approach it a number of ways to maximize their dps--it creates rewarding depth without being too punishing to the current playstyle.

Now to the crux of the issue...we should be trying to move away from rez mage, not toward it. Being able to dualcast verraise verbatimraise every 15 seconds...would be truly broken. I could and do support the idea of using it as a mobility tool and the ways in which it could be used to add complex rewards to the finisher, as well as more "The Floor is Jolt 2."

EDIT: I don't mean to sound overly harsh or anything. I genuinely like some of these ideas; enhanced accel, verbatim, and equipose would all, imo, be really good moves forward for the job. As I said a bit earlier in my post, I'm a bit biased; I know the history this game has with jobs balanced "for safety", PLD 3.x and WHM 3.x suffered harshly in the endgame because they were there for safety when the community values "The best defense is a good offense."

Double raise is a seperate issue and honestly to balance its good use is a seperate issue. BUT, I would make VerRaise give you a white mana increase of 16-29. Vercure and Vercure II something like 4-9 and 10-15. Rewards GOOD use of support, while punishing overuse into one element.


Double raising results in an instant inbalance and depending on where you were in your rotation it could end up very badly.

You could make verraise auto-break the gauge entirely and people will still value RDM more for verraise than anything else, sadly. As it is now, one could consider it "balanced" because of the sheer cost of MP for overusing verraise, but people still prioritize that as their answer for why RDM should be a weak DPS, despite how punishing it actually is for a RDM to raise.

if they change it, I wouldn't be a fan of yet more healing stuff there'd be little use for - there's usually 2 healers for that already. I'd like to see and extra damage AOE, and personal buff (similar to the old RS). Verholy/flare are the same (just call it verholyF lol), or make one an AOE following moulinet.

Maybe in place of Vercure II, something like this

Trait: InSpirit: When Black Mana is higher than White Mana Embolden increases nearby party members magic damage by 10%. When White mana is higher it remains unchanged. If both Black and White mana are equal all party members gain increased healing by 5%.

While it would probably be preferable for Embolden to be changed to just do both Phyisical and Magical instead (and probably is what would happen regardless), this could give a bit of a change in playstyle depending on what group you get with each instance. And unlike say, Dragoon's HW version of Wheeling Thrust/Fang and Claw, you would have a good bit of control over which version you would want to use. It also still gives a little bit of support healing help without trying to make RDM an actual healer type.

Dia -25 White and black mana. 120 second cooldown.
Deals holy damage over time. 50 potency. Duration 30 seconds.
Additional effect: Target is 3% more likely to be critically hit for 30 seconds.
(RDM needs a better cooldown because embolden sucks.)

Enhanced Embolden
Embolden also grants 10% increase in spell cast speed fading 2% per four seconds.
(Makes embolden work in groups without melee)

Emergency Tactics: 300 second cooldown. All black and white mana.
Consume all black and white mana to restore HP and MP of all party members within 10y
Health restored as based on white mana consumed. 1% per white mana.
Mana restored is based on black mana consumed. .5% per black mana.

Just some things I thought up for fun.

I would prefer to have a different aoe rotation.

Scatter => verhydro / verblizzard

Just like we do Jolt => VerAero/VerThunder to balance our gauge.

Sword and Sorcery - Trait
Enchanted Riposte instead costs 5 White, 5 Black mana and grants Dualcast if your total mana levels are less than 55/55
Corps-a-corps gains additional potency for every yalm of distance traveled, up to +100% potency.
Displacement gains additional potency for every action performed in melee range of your target, up to +100% potency.

Floods of White - Ability
This spell becomes available upon spending a combined total of 200 Mana. Using this spell resets this pool for any other action that has the same requirement.
Effect: Perform an enhanced Corps-a-corps, dealing additional magic potency and healing Allies in the path to your target for the equivalent combined potency.

Shrouds of Black - Ability
This spell becomes available upon spending a combined total of 200 Mana. Using this spell resets this pool for any other action that has the same requirement.
Effect: Perform an enhanced Displacement, dealing additional magic potency and dealing damage to all enemies in the area around your target for the equivalent combined potency.

Am I the only one that noticed that Equipoise would do physical damage? Why? The damage on it would be very low considering RDM is a magic caster.

Yes, melee combo for RDM in normal form is physical, but it changes to magic when enchanted and using normal melee combo outside of enchanted is a huge dps loss.

Fleche and Contra Sixte are also physical / piercing, so I'd assume that equipose like them would scale off of int.

I really like Kabooa's suggestions too!

Nice for the icons but beside VercureII which is oddly enough the exact copy of what i had in mind for its future healing move (I assume he'll get one)

Faster Acceleration doesn't change much. I actually prefer the normal acceleration.
Red Blur is unnecessary, if your goal was to give more flexibility with the cross role system (which I expect to receive some update in 5.0), just give "Veresuna" instead.
Equipoise is... useless to say the least. Beside the slight potency boost as a regular cd the whole mana management thing is again, totally useless, RDM mana generation is very easy to control.

Regarding Verbatim the idea is great but RDM doesn't seem the be the ideal job for it, I mean beside using it on VerHoly/Flare what do you want to do with it?

I actually want VerWaterand VerFreeze/Blizzard (wathever they'll do) for the sole point of having more elements ^^

All OGCDs that a RDM uses are Physical. Displacement, Corps-a-corps, Fleche and Contre Sixte. Red Mage's DPS is 20% physical.

With faster Acceleration, instead of Accel -> Stone/fire/impact/jplt -> Verthunder/Aero. You would Accel Verthunder -> VerAero. Its all about building black and white mana faster while avoiding Jolt II.

Giving RDM an Esuna would be terrible. ESPECIALLY if it was on the GCD. Esuna is a rarely used skill as is.

Equipoise is about being smart with your procs and again, more quickly building mana. It adds more thought to RDM as a class without breaking it.

Verbatim is a quirky utility spell. It increases your DPS by allowing you to double cast a verholy or verflare while also being there for VerAero/thunder and currently VerRaise.






If they did decide that they didn't want to go the healing upgrade, which I am fine with, then they should as Dual and others suggested go for a VerFinisher after melee combos as the level 74 skill instead. :3

Honestly shocked how many want RDM to be BLM 0.5. RDM has always been the jack of all trades in FF and it has so little in XIV outside of dps as it is. Anything that gives us more to do than dps rotations I'm game for; as I do use it constantly in dailies or pug groups. I thoroughly enjoy being able to dance between offence and defense depending on the situation. If anything it would be awesome if they considered making a "step-down" cure, Vermend or something, for the lower levels so we aren't just BLM 0.5 anything pre 54. Even others get confused sometimes in dailies when I don't cure because the healer is unable to at lower levels.

I'm sorry, but wanting RDM to be better at DPS isn't the same as wanting it to be "BLM 0.5". This game follows the Holy Trinity; RDM was slotted into the DPS role, therefore anything it does outside of DPS should either aid others' DPS or its own DPS. There is no way to have a "Jack of All Trades" job, because that job would be fundamentally useless endgame. I'm sure you'll say "It'll be fine for dungeons and casual content" and yes, it will, but I enjoy RDM myself, and I like playing it in raids without the knowledge I'm holding the group back by not going MCH.

Honestly if the healer is unable to heal at the lower levels, the healer at that point needs to learn without being carried by a DPS slot. Sounds harsh but people cannot and should not rely on a RDM to carry healing at any level.

If you play RDM purely for its DPS, that is entirely your call and have at it, I wouldn't knock it if you were in my party. Although pushing for RDMs to not have support skills because of your own bias is what I have a problem with. I have no doubt its extremely hard for SE to balance RDM in a such a limited trinity style game; although that does not change what RDM stands for, which is a little bit of everything. The pure-breed DPS alternate is Black Mage, through and through.

It's easy to push a 'black and white' argument to finalize things; although fighting in dungeons, trials, or raids are not always the case. The problem is that these niche saving utilities come at a cost that they don't outweigh. We're in the red (bad pun) as far as it comes to actual utility. Vercure and Verraise are only useful if things go wrong otherwise our only contribution is Embolden and less DPS than Bard which has a far larger rDPS contribution, and arguably more useful defensive utility and Refresh utility. If you want to argue what Red Mage stands for it's White Magic, Black Magic, and some swordfighting. White Magic could easily have been limited only to offensive White spells especially in this particular game which consistently ignores Final Fantasy conventions (Aero, Stone and Water spells usually belong to Black or Blue Magic). You shouldn't be okay with the vast majority of your skills being hampered by the fact that two are useful in very rare niches (4+ people dying per minute, inexperienced/bad healers.)

When you leveled your BLM to 60 and got FireIV, you felt the change, when your SMN got Dreadwyrm Stance, the first mega laser you shot was like "boom yassss!". Not every spell, every expac can be more powerful than the last without consequence. Look at Ruin III and Ruin IV. If every expac upgrade had a new foul for every class, that wouldnt be very interesting either. The "old" foul would get nerfed and the new one would just replace it. Flare and Holy know that well. Good classes get new synergies that make their toolkits shine in a different light. Equipoise, being able to convert stored procs into Fleche level burst, while cashing in all of those procs AND getting a new proc that compliments your current mana balance is a VER-Y powerful and synergistic skill. Verbatim, being able to do Verholy/Flare which are locked behind an 80 mana cast melee combo at a free and instant speed is very powerful in its own right. VerHoly! VerHoly! Also being able to make use of its flexibility for the standard part of your rotation/utility to ease your MP burden is amazing to me.

They're not toxic, you just say things that get pointed out as not making sense from a gameplay and in a couple occasions lore perspective.

I'm not going to pretend to know the figures each job does in exacts or perfect scenarios, or in any case for that matter. My base idea still stands regardless. If we are lacking in dps to other comparable jobs, in this case bard, then buff it up (I never once said RDMs dps should be left alone.) If the utility is lacking, then improve the utility, don't destroy it. As far as FF conventions being all over the place; this is far from the first game, considering how many are out there. That argument could've been used for Paladin and having no native cure at launch; yet it does now because many of the consumers wanted that aspect put back into Paladin. Introducing a class/job that is known for a specific style, then yanking out half of the style midway through isn't the answer.

You can't just improve the utility because it's niche though, then it becomes mandatory and the damage aspect of the class falls further and further behind. Paladins didn't just "get" Clemency either, they had to wait for an expansion before they got it. The specific style as I said already is Black Magic, White Magic, and modest Swordplay, easily could've been limited to offensive magic. Yeah FF conventions are all over the place in this game. Sure the 'having more support options' route is something to do in a turn based, single player game like the majority of the main series titles, but this an MMO with different style combat and a specific categorization of classes. Red Mage is DPS not a fancy Green/Red Hybrid role. And I didn't say to destroy the utility, the two defensive utility options (which are a terrible category for classes, look at White Mage and Paladin in 3.x) are fine enough as it is, we don't need more, if anything Verraise needs to be toned down so we aren't hampered further by the 'oh well they might save the whole run if 4+ people die in the span of a minute' excuse, since we are a DPS class.

The issue is, Sho, for every utility they give RDM they need to drop dps total for balance purposes. If all of RDM's support is healing, then they should have dropped RDM into the game as a healer.

RDM could do with more support options, but a double verraise and an aoe regen are not those options. They'll only push RDM further into prog babysitter territory, where they're taken for prog and then swapped out.

Positive support would be the kind that buffs party damage. Which I route back to where I said "anything they don't do to dps should be contributing to dps."

There's nothing wrong at all with spot healing. Did it on thm back in haukke 2.x, did it as RDM a lot as well. But there is something wrong if healers see a RDM and expect them to do their job for them. As someone who had to act as a solo heal rdm with a sch in the party in a thordan ex farm, I know the over reliance can be ridiculous.

I really want red mage to lose verraise as i think its holding the job back from having more useful skills or just higher damage overall (im just assuming here but i think red mage does less damage because the dev team considers verraise to be highly useful, it is but only for prog) id love a succor type ability where i can apply a seperate shield to the party and maybe a insta cast cooldown that i can give to another party member aka you see your healer slow casting raise and u use this cooldown on them so they instantly cast their raise so you become more of an indirect rezdispenser over what we are now maybe allowing us to gain some potency buffs to be an even more bursty dps than what we are now.

I do like the skills you've made yourself and the icons im assuming you designed are really cool.

Yeah this is pretty much hubbies post because he's bored. He borrowed icons from the game and just changed hues mostly. Faster acceleration is acceleration with darker red in the back and purple crystal. Red Blur is corps and displacement placed on top of each other, rotated so that they both "pierced" the same spot and hued Red. Vercure II is vercure and cure II with a darker blue hue. Equipoise is tridisaster with more red/yellow/pink elements. Verbatim was the most fun with Apocastasis having it's coloring changed, the black circle removed and Plenary indulgence underneath it.

I don't want raise taken away from, because then without a living healer or summoner it's useless. No more clutch raise the healer lb3 (like smn would still be able to do. ) I think a fair trade off would be to give RDM an ability based Raise with a cd of 15-30 seconds off the GCD, costing the same MP. Still puts RDM as a favored raiser, but limits mass raising. A party wide mana ward (succor equivalent) might be a little cheap since BLM can only shield itself. I suggested a regen, because it rolls over into battle, helps healers fit in an extra dps attacking once the invuln of the boss is over and doesn't give yet another class a party wide shield. No DPS have the ability now but stacking succor, shake it off, divine veil and a rdm shield and you're getting crazy with effective HP.
