Patch 4.2 Extra Retainer should be free

At first I was excited to hear that we would be getting an extra retainer. However, I did note that there was no mention of if that retainer would be free. Now, I find it's what I suspected, we will be able to hire a ninth retainer.

I'm sorry, but this really isn't good enough. This is the only subscription game I can think of where I've had to hire storage space. I've played FTP games and had more free storage than I could use.

If people having up to seven paid retainers won't over-stress the servers, I cannot see any reason for not giving all of us another retainer for free.

Unless alot of people stop using this service, I dont think anything will change. SE has been profiting of the retainer service for years now, I dont think they will stop doing them or give us a free retainer. I mean, they knew more inventory space was requested by alot of players since the end of ARR and in HW they could have given us free retainers, but they didnt do that. The reason is simple, why give something for free, if others are willing to pay for it.

Personaly, I am just glad they did not lock the ability to dye glamour behind a Mog Station purchase.

As jaded as I seem to be atm I see... Yeah, just be glad SE isn't removing retainer features, or charging more for them in this patch, LOL

It would be really nice to have at least one additional free retainer PER expansion. That would make 3 or 4 free retainers in total.

Laerune and Polyhedral - I do get where you guys are coming from but come on! One thing I admire about this company is that they do listen to their customers. Complaints get results (housing has proved this).

If we just sit back and accept this, or even worse offer up gratitude that we aren't being treated even more badly, things absolutely will not change. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

We can complain all we want, they're not gonna change a system that earns them money.

I should not have been suprised that the next retainer would be a paid one too...and yet I still had hope that we would finally get a free one again..is one free retainer per expansion really too much to ask for? Especially with such a huge amount of glamour per expansions..

Well, to be fair, what exactly are you doing with your retainers. If you use them to hold glamour items, then the 200 slots in the dresser will be more than an extra retainer could hold (175 slots). For other stuff, you get an additional 70 slots attached to your chocobo. I guess if you need to do a lot of venture farming or need a lot of market board sell slots, then you may have a point, but just because it's not a free retainer, doesn't mean we're not getting more free storage.

It's sad free to play games sell permanent unlock of storage space. In this game you have to pay monthly for it and lose the space if you stop paying.

Right? At least make it a one-time buy. :/ I had to buy 2 additional retainers because I was lacking space, playing since the very begining of this game. A free retainer would be a cool move, SE. Unless, of course, your servers can't handle it.

200 items that I will never be able to get out of the dresser since they will get destroyed if you do so. And it would still be only the space that was already needed for HW.

I have one paid at the moment and I'm sending all of them out on ventures and using them to hold glamours, crafting mats, fishing bait etc.
Since the Dresser basically destroys items (gear cannot be retrieved) and gear in there cannot be used to glam your squad, I'm going to be very careful what I put in there.
I know we have got some extra storage this patch, but for me an extra free retainer would be more valuable than the choco-bag.

I just feel that since we are paying a sub, it's a bit cheeky that we only have the 2 free retainers we had in ARR and are expected to pay extra if we'd like more.

I believe it's because you aren't just renting storage, you are renting a worker. Using it to its fullest is up to the individual, but the potential is there nonetheless.

Instead of storage space... they should let us take a Retainer out in battle with us... one we can glam and have a personal touch to.

It's pretty ridiculous that a subscription MMO forces you to add another subscription for using what amounts to an in-game bank.

I'm amazed we are even getting the saddlebag for free at this point.

Meh... let SE make money off additional retainers... what we need is a chest for just crafting items (culinarians know what I'm talking about)... one storage for crafting materials...

Tho I agree locking gear into glamour status may become problematic.... bet they change this later

HaHaHa, sorry seriously though. At this point you should expect all announcements to be cash which includes pets and glamour unless they say otherwise at the start. Also for it to be the most financially beneficial for SE and least beneficial for the player. I am surprised they didn't announce that it would be per character and not per account going forward.

They have clearly drawn their lines for the model for this game. And while the rest of the gaming world pushes back on micro-transaction system, enough 14 players like it, or support it, or own stock. These won't change now until they have a bad expansion numbers. With the supporters it will probable be awhile.

I think retainers are probably the closest thing to pay to win there is in ffxiv and by adding MORE paid ones without adding any more free ones they are not helping their case...

I’m not gonna hold paid retainers against them, but in a subscription game it should at least be balanced, like 4 free and 4 paid, not 2 free and 7 paid, that’s EA levels of greedy.

So $168/year for what's probably less than 5mb of space if you have all 7 additional retainers? :eek:

I feel the same. For now the only glamour I plan to put in the Dresser are things I can craft or repurchase easily. Other stuff will still go to my Retainer or sit in my Armory.

Its really hopeless. They add with every expansion 100+, maybe even more (cant even keep track cause its getting more and more) new materials which can be gathered, crafted and used. And then they cry that they dont have the server requirements to expand inventory slots/bags/free retainers.
I dont know what they expect from us? How long do we have to pay for extra rentainers? Its getting slowly ridiculous.

That wouldn't be so bad if they didn't keep using old materials in the new item recipes.

We need more free retainers not more paid ones. Each expansion adds a lot of new materials for crafting plus all the new glamour. We really need at least one new free retainer for each expansion. We also need a true glamour log. The glamour dresser is not the right solution since it has a hard limit of 200 items and you have to destroy items if you later decide you want different items in it.

I already pay for 6 additional retainers per month, and I've been saying for a long time now that we should get a 3rd free retainer, 1 per expansion. While it is nice we finally get another retainer, having to pay for 7 of them when SE keeps throwing new items and gear at us is really not fair, even if it is only an extra $2 per month.

It really does come down to Squeenix making money off of this as much as possible, and people continuing to pay into it. It would be nice if we got a third free retainer like (I thought) was hinted pre-Heavensward release, before it turned out we were being allowed to buy yet another retainer. Since then I have been working my arse off in balancing my glamours and my crafting/gathering mats, as well as Relic-based items when I was working on so many animas.

Things were only getting harder as time went on, so MAYBE the Glam Dresser will help. Really what would help is a third free retainer, but, again, SE seeks only to make as much money as possible from this game.

The answer seems simple to me: Gil. Everyone has tons of gil they aren't using by the time they need extra retainers, let us hire them for a month (same as optional service) for gil. After all, that's the currency a person in the game would want for their services. Of course, keep the option to pay real money, some people might prefer that, but for those of us who don't, let us drop some gil on it. I don't really know what a fair price might be but gil is pretty easy to get so, maybe 1M for a month for each beyond number 2 (though 3 or 4 would certainly be preferred.) Of course I know they wouldn't want to lose any revenue from this, but as I said, some people would likely still pay real money anyway, and the mog station is still a thing that exists. I know they'll never do this but it would certainly be my suggestion.

A third free retainer would be nice for ventures and sale slots, but I don't really need the storage if I manage my items well. To be honest, with the addition of dresser and saddlebag and 999 item stacks, I could have my number of retainers reduced to zero and I'd be ok. Any glamors that can't go in the armoire will go in the dresser. Non-glam gear goes in armory chest. Other items in inventory and saddlebag. Glam prisms just got reduced down to a single type. Carbonised matter was already killed off. Furnishings were given a storeroom. They've been making some nice progress on item management systems.

Increasing quantity limit to 999 doesn't change the fact that there are still thousands of different materials and other items worth keeping around that need the extra space if you want to keep it all. A 3rd free retainer is the least SE could do to address burying us under a mountain of items but nope, they want us to pay for 3+ instead of paying for 4+.

Stop whining, and go clean out your inventory. You have tools. If that still isn’t enough, then you can complain.

To offset this, how about a free retainer in 5.0... Maybe one paid, one free every alternating expansion from now on.

Glamour Dresser: Good for people that hoard glamour items, not that big a thing for those that do not, or only keep around a few glamour items.
Saddlebags: Nice and all, but only really useful for not getting a full inventory while out adventuring, and doesn't even apply in duties.
Extra Retainer: Not free so not everyone will "get" one. I already pay for 6 extra and even I don't see a reason to buy a 7th.

No one is complaining about space management and all anyway. What we are complaining about is the fact we have to pay monthly for yet another Retainer instead of getting a 3rd free and then just pay monthly for the 6 we already pay for. The ever-expanding need for more space due to constantly being thrown new materials and such our way dictates we should at least get a 3rd free retainer, but nope SE denied us this. THAT is what the complaining is about.

The Dresser destroys all items you place it in. We still don't know if these Mirage Plates allow you to mix and match with the current prism system. If it doesn't, you'll be forced to put whole outfits into it. Which means whatever goes in there won't be able to pair up with a cash shop glamour you didn't want to permanently discard.

no, one per expansion, so we should be getting a total of 4. They should be giving us more room, if they can't program the game to be more efficient.

Releasing a 9th retainer to pay for without giving more for free is a huge insult to the playerbase

We got lots of races stop crying about adding Viera. °_° We got lots of glamour, stop crying for a bunny set for men and more..I mean you can use that argument literally everywhere. (And no I am not saying that one should stop complaining..I am just using some examples that can be seen the exact same way)

Its a fact that we get more and more items, even more items that are timed, part of an content with RNG (canals), FC ventures and more. At the same time they use old items for crafting too. Then on top of all those crafts we get countless of bait for the fisher who is the only gathering job that needs their own inventory space to just use their job..so the saddlebags are kinda like the needed tackle box for us fishers. And next to all of that you have lots and lots of glamour. The new dresser now destroys the items if you want to take them out thus you cant just throw everything in it. On top of that we got way more glamour than that in two expansion..

So new mats, olds mats still being used, lots of baits and a huge amount of glamour..and we got no single new free retainer for two expansions..The extra retainer you are telling us about costs money..why should we be fine to having to pay even more? The glamour dresser has a limit of 200..and it only takes glamour and not even every glamour. The chocobo saddlebags are nice but still only 70 more. I am quite sure that all the new items per patch is already way more than that.

I will not stop complaining when I get the feeling that they only care for our money. "Hey the servers can only handle more retainers if you pay in real money for that! Because somehow that magically make it better."

Best to only keep things that can't easily be replaced, and don't keep hoard stacks of all the other stuff that can be gathered easily, bought cheaply or is rarely used.

Not that I'm against giving negative feedback and asking for more. In the case of item storage they've already been addressing it using several different methods, doing the most they can with their resources.

For retainers free vs paid it's going into the business side, I guess they would need to convince corporate that making players happy with more free stuff would gain more subscribers and lead to healthier financials than just charging for that 3rd retainer.

Maybe they can't without data to support the proposal, if most players are either not fully utilising the retainers they have already, or hoarders who are happily paying for many additional ones.

With all those inventory additions I'm surprised you even need that many retainers. I ditched my extra retainer because of that.
We are getting 999 stacks and extra inventory on chocobos plus the new glamour system which can free up additional slots from your retainers.
I have absolutely no issue and I'm happy with that. I think inventory is now balanced.
What I'm not happy is the main scenario roulette changes and the tank changes. But that's for another thread.
