Companions: Are they Dead?

Sorry, not sure whether to post this in general or lore.
I honestly don't pay attention to side quests anymore, but have always wondered...Where did my meat shield go?

In 1.0 they gave us an NPC as part of essentially being one of the scions. And then later in the story, he got fired across a battle field by Van Baelsar, who had been carrying along a dead body as a disguise - The quest was called Futures Perfect (for those of you who want to check the awesome cutscene on the interwebs, has a tiny bit of voice acting! /shock).

Anyway, after this quest, an NPC tells you that your companion will be fine and is recovering.....annnnnd then a big dragon spat fire all over eorzea and I don't know what ever happened to my pet grouch (chosen personality) and will he be making a return?

So has anyone seen any mention of a companion in game?

They might just be one among many adventurer friends we as WoL sometimes call upon to help with dungeons/trials.

/chuckle that's a cute idea, but they were an NPC, they accompanied you through your story missions and fought along side you. Sometimes saw you at your worst, and depending on which personality you picked for them upon choosing them, they would slowly warm up to you :)
Always wondered what became of mine. He was mean, but by the end he wasn't a total jerk anymore. He evolved quite nicely :D

I wish to have a potato companion, pls make it happen.

I've honestly never understood why we don't have an adventuring companion besides our chocobo.

would be nice to have someone to talk to during my soloing that didn't respond to everything with "kweh" and silent judgemental staring.

We should be allowed to summon our retainers or squadron members, or just a completely separate adventuring fellow
...i just went XI again, i miss my adventuring fellow T^T the bonding quests were epic.

I don’t think they did. I thought they were among the missing though.

In terms of gameplay functionality... yeah, they're chocos now. And what chocos don't cover, squadrons will probably take the rest of.

I do miss my little buddy. What he lacked in height he made up with heart. I'll remember him. Hope he is well.

They only appeared idley in the waking sand, during cutscenes and instanced fights. They made it so that the warrior of light wasn't alone (because we'd all be dead without those companions if memory serves right).
Companions never had the Echo either (again, if memory serves) so they could be just a random npc anywhere in the world. It'd just be nice to set them to rest of they're dead, or reunion if they're not.
Like the Orphans christmas event :') I cried irl, seeing he was alright, alive and well.

Don't know about those but I would like to see more functionality on Retainers and Squadrons. I would like to have my retainers sitting at my house's couch waiting for me or appear randomly on battles for a little buff or heal (like Angelo in FFVIII). I would like more interaction with Squadrons and Retainers. Retainers are kinda forgotten.

I’ve never realized this until I’ve read this.... yeah, while my Boco is a faithful companion, having someone talk and go on quests with you would be nice, next expansion perhaps?

Only 3.0 here... this is a million times better than a chocobo! Sorry Saint (but not sorry). I remember having people like this in SWTOR.

Actual npc companions that may have some sort of side stories to explore could be cool.

If I recall correctly, data mining shows that some of the Path Companion models are used for various NPCs around Eorzea, so canonically those probably just left the Scions after the calamity and are doing their own thing.

The other unused ones are probably implied to have died during Bahamut's attack.

Also the reason 1.0 adventurers needed a path companion was because you could do the MSQ quests (what few there were) as a DoL or DoH, so your NPC buddy was there to fight the monsters that you as a fisher or a culinarian could not. Path companion and the Parley system were bandaids for what was a unique--if dumb in hindsight-- concept.

Unfortunately the guy who did the actual appearance data-mining had a big public meltdown on reddit and pulled all his stuff so I can't verify it anymore, but I 100% remember that he found at least a couple of matches.

I don't think they ever said what happened to path companions in 2.0 we may never find out.

And the npc companon in ff11 was awsome i loved to lv up her and give her some nice stuff!

I always just took it as they were part of the Scion lot that Livia killed off, as we only seen a portion of the bodies around.

Sadly the Path Companions I think are considered by SE as just a legacy of 1.0 now that Yoshi has moved away from. Save for some brief mention of them in the Minion Guide, they've been abandoned gameplay wise completely unfortunately, replaced by the Chocobo Companion and the new Grand Company Squadron. Story wise, the last we knew of their whereabouts was at the end of the last added Path of the Twelve quest in 1.0, 'Future's Perfect' (the one where Gaius was first introduced), where during the ill-fated mission to Mor Dhona the Path Companion ended up being shot by Gaius and was stated by Minfilia at the end of the quest as being sent to the ALC's Guild in Ul'dah for medical treatment... and that is the last we ever heard or saw of them.

It was originally intended to continue the Path of the Twelve storyline (evidence in 1.0's game files suggested that the player was intended to reunite with their Path Companion and be dispatched to Mount O'ghomoro to investigate the kobolds, and ending up encountering the Company of Heroes fighting Titan)... but a combination of the changeover in development team members (namely, Yoshi taking up position as producer and director) and the terrible 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami saw to it that the Path of the Twelve storyline was pretty much abandoned at that point, the story instead changing to an emphasis on the approaching Seventh Umbral Era as part of the events leading up to the shutdown of 1.0 and the changeover to ARR.

Because of this, the Path Companions were also abandoned sadly, and, I think at this point now, it's safe to say they're not coming back (the story kind of handwaves it away anyway that most of the Path's members were killed in the Battle of Carteneau so it's highly likely that is where the Path Companion met their fate too - it's what I believe happened to my one in any event).

Mine was a potato. I was a potato too though, so I felt we had to stick together. Two potatoes is better than one! He had a mama's boy type of personality, and I can't recall if he changed much or anything throughout the 1.x series.

I’ve just been imagining I have companions. (I like to ‘fill in the blanks’ and give my character some dialogue.) First she had a talking Carbuncle, then I ended up creating some designs in the character creator that I really liked, so I decided they were her friends. They’ve become quite interesting - to me anyway...

Being able to do more with our retainers would be great - especially if they could have a battle class and still be a gatherer! I really like both of them - very clear personalities from that little bit of interaction - and it would be nice if we could see more of them.

Hmm I understand fully now, that it from a gameplay/implimentation point of view that they are void. But being able to say for certain they are dead, give them a little grave marker out in Coerthas (Another one) or Mor D'hona would be nice. Perhaps over at the Crystal Shrines remains that for some odd reason (that I never understood, due to never reading damn sidequests) got teleported from Mord' to coert'... or how the base of it disappeared and they dumped the Thaliak symbol up by the plasmoid tree in Mord' instead :S

Hmmm would be nice to find which npcs they used the models on. They're pretty generic anyway, but maybe my grouch is amongst them :)

That was part of the 7th Umbral Era storyline leading up to the Calamity which were added after Yoshi P joined the team. Actually one of the last ones (I believe you're referring to Living on a Prayer, one of the LAST quests). The quest Enkidoh is referring to is actually one of the old quests for the original storyline which was in from the start of 1.0.

They should really bring them back again miss not having one and chocobo's just stare at you. Be nice if they gave you a option where could marry them and not always be stuck marrying another player. Also miss my companion from ffxi he was the tank and I was the healer a perfect combo.

Unfortunately your path companion forgot about you a long time ago. When the calamity hit, everyone forgot everything about the warrior of light except that they existed. Anything could have happened to your companion in those 5 years after that, died, retired, they could have left eorzea entirely. But even if they saw you, they wouldn’t know who you are, they’re just another face in the crowd now.

If you really can’t accept that they’re gone, make them your retainer, they retired from adventuring and that’s how they chose to spend the rest of their days.

I think almost everyone wants them back.

But boy I miss my sultry catgirl companion. I'm still waiting for the dose of gratitude she promised me.

I remember my companion was a female Miqo'te and had brown hair.

Mine was a blonde Elezen with a very bad attitude. He always treated my WoL like she was in the way, during the start of the story. But by the end, they were equals and walked together.
He really was an a-hole :/ I miss him though.
Might see if I can find him anywhere in the npc crowd. Not the same as having a conversation with them though.
Always imagined in their downtime (probably when I was offline), that they'd go find a few pints together and have intense arguments to the point they became friends.

Kind of wish you could set a Squadron member to be a Captain, who in turn could be your companion.
