Companions: Are they Dead?

Sorry, not sure whether to post this in general or lore.
I honestly don't pay attention to side quests anymore, but have always wondered...Where did my meat shield go?

In 1.0 they gave us an NPC as part of essentially being one of the scions. And then later in the story, he got fired across a battle field by Van Baelsar, who had been carrying along a dead body as a disguise - The quest was called Futures Perfect (for those of you who want to check the awesome cutscene on the interwebs, has a tiny bit of voice acting! /shock).

Anyway, after this quest, an NPC tells you that your companion will be fine and is recovering.....annnnnd then a big dragon spat fire all over eorzea and I don't know what ever happened to my pet grouch (chosen personality) and will he be making a return?

So has anyone seen any mention of a companion in game?

/chuckle that's a cute idea, but they were an NPC, they accompanied you through your story missions and fought along side you. Sometimes saw you at your worst, and depending on which personality you picked for them upon choosing them, they would slowly warm up to you
Always wondered what became of mine. He was mean, but by the end he wasn't a total jerk anymore. He evolved quite nicely
Would just be nice to know if he lived or not :S

I've honestly never understood why we don't have an adventuring companion besides our chocobo.

would be nice to have someone to talk to during my soloing that didn't respond to everything with "kweh" and silent judgemental staring.

We should be allowed to summon our retainers or squadron members, or just a completely separate adventuring fellow
...i just went XI again, i miss my adventuring fellow T^T the bonding quests were epic.

In terms of gameplay functionality... yeah, they're chocos now. And what chocos don't cover, squadrons will probably take the rest of.
