look i understand you want simpler job system but dummy jobs down to be to easy make it get bored to fast allow player to rise to challenge of jobs. if a job is to challange one put behind an expansion I find frustating that you never thought this.

if you have new jobs set lvl 30 this way it give players time learn or learning curve.
to set job at lvl 50 not much time learn they role. one set complex jobs to have lower lvl start point like lvl 30

Sad reality is that most people don't play this game for a challenge. A good percentage of the playerbase is very casual at core, of course this doesn't mean plenty of casual players don't enjoy a good challenge, but a large portion of the casual playerbase enjoy little to no challenge at all. It's just what they want and square must ablige if they want to keep that sweet cash flowing.
Being a mid-hardcore player myself it always tilts me a little that people are like that but I've come to accept it. That's just how most people enjoy the game and over complicating the game will just make subs vanish even more than oversimplifying it.

The thought about playing other games during content patches is a bit odd, majority of MMORPGs make content that make you stay in that one game to keep up to date. Even non-MMOs like MOBAs and Overwatch, produce their games with the intent you will be playing their game 100% of your playtime.

FFXIV: ARR was designed to be a casual themepark mmo, you come, ride for a bit till you start to burn out, and take a break (yoshi even prefers people to take breaks) massive burnout sucks it makes you not want to play any more ever, it happened to overwatch too, where a large base left due to massive burnout.

They add hardcore stuff occasionally for those who want a challenge, but they wont base a whole job around it.
They set the SB jobs at 50 so people could easily grind the levels for the new content, unlike all the backlash they got in HW for their jobs starting at 30.
because once again, this is like a ride, you come, you experience all the rides, and when you have your fill, you leave, and they rather you leave happy rather than angry.

Yoshida-san draws inspiration from playing a wide variety of games. He says it has given him the perspective he needs to keep FFXIV evolving and not simply follow time tested mmo formats for the sake of money grabs. Many aspects of FFXIV are similar to what works in other mmo’s, however there is an insane degree of originality in FFXIV that has astonished millions of players.

Unfortunately, the whole “casual” thing is based on a persistent myth that the mid/hardcore players don’t often think about. Final Fantasy fans aren’t like most mmo fans. The myth is that FFXIV progression and the “challenge” is modeled after the prototypical mmo, and it’s not. Final Fantasy fans were those geeks in elementary school who argued that FF was better than Zelda. They weren’t concerned with much, until after they experienced the story. Then some went back as completionists to get all the loots. Storyline > Fun side quests > Challenge. There is a chronic inability of non Final Fantasy fans to understand that an overwhelming majority of players really don’t care about dps logs, item levels, or world firsts.

And when you take a break from the game, whether forced or by choice, you really feel how you've been left behind. This sometimes leaves players feeling they simply won't ever catch up. So they leave completely.

Personally, I'm glad FFXIV follows this more laid back model. I can play other things, invest in other hobbies, work and still keep up with the game easily. Not to mention because of its laid back nature, I was able to convince friends that pretty much never touch MMOs, because of their commitments, to play.

"Dumbing down" is a perspective. For people that are more dexterous or simply have better hand-eye coordination, they might have little to no trouble completing tasks. People that have a hard time memorizing patterns or have slower reaction speeds might already find something that others might considering boring a challenge. While this entry in the series of Final Fantasy may be MMO, because of the series name it holds, it has drawn first-time MMO players to the field. The skill sets will not be the same.

I was kind of disappointed when I found that out. I was looking forward to slowly leveling and learning the two new jobs one new skill at a time, but instead it plopped me down at level 50 with dozens of skills I didn't know how to use.

imo good game design is the game is easy to pick up, hard to master. Playing a character job/ gearing up that character/job should be the easy parts.

The hard parts or the challenge should be from the content itself Monk is a good example, it would have been great to have a more straightforward job, but as it is. Not a lot of people master the job. If you say have ADD you can mess up on where you have to stand during what attack, and each set of levels change the pattern. Which again can be hard to grasp for some, so those who do enjoy hand 2 hand type jobs/weapons may not be able to play monk. I know my g/f had a hard time with MNK that re re roll her character 5 times to try and learn it from the ground up.

And monk was her main job in ff11 and ff1.0.

imo there is no such thing as dumbing a job down, there is such thing as dumbing down content.

yes and this game design of constant content lacks and people doing breaks makes it pretty hard to keep an FC or any sort of static active. wich leads to problems with randoms in the team-jump-rope-mechanic-style fights in this game and not many people want to mess with that (especially when you are not the best player), so they don't go into the harder fights and so they don't have a reason, and also not really a chance, to become a better player. so square has to tune the classes and the fights down that you can easily clear the content with randoms.

Both jobs were designed that they are very easy to pick up and play at 50 and slowly introduce their more complex stuff as you level.

The only difference if it started at 30 is you would have incomplete combo's and a couple of abilities missing which makes it so you don't get a proper feel for the job until 50 anyways...

that give you time learn the combo have them like second nature

what frustate me is possible jobs like beast master with ability to tame pets is to complex job. that not let players have ability to control and customized they pet and they character how they want. i think they should both complex and simple jobs. if summoner is to be complex let it be that way give players a chance have fun with summoner complexity.

their should room for both simple jobs and complex jobs too. some casual players might like complex jobs who knows. i knew a casual player who love play on wow hunter with ability tame pets myself

While I don't disagree, the more complexity and options a job has, the harder it is to balance, the more prone it is to nerfs. Look at NIN, when players found a rotation the devs didn't think of

I've said it before, in many games. There are two types of players:

1. Those that get it.
2. Those that don't.

The majority from what I've seen in groups lately.. get it somewhat. Using Red Mages as an example. Most seem to grasp the idea of leading with Jolt to fire up Dualcast. Out of a dozen Redmages I've seen over the last 2 weeks I've only encountered one who didn't. They used Jolt twice or occasionally hardcasted verAero/Thunder without Dualcast.

Here's what SquareEnix ought to do:

Remove 4man dungeons and 8man trials from the MSQ. Or allow a version of it to be played that is entirely solo. Allow the 4 man dungeons and the non-expert trials for the intermediate (average) players, and then your hardest content for the more hardened players.

You can't teach the ones who 'don't get it' how to play 'properly'. They're simply not going to grasp it, or lack the manual dexterity to pull it off. Simplifying the classes won't work. Many of them don't even make the connection between a 123 combo. And you know what? They don't even want to learn, they just want to kick back, read the story and see the ending. Let them have it, but segregate them from the rest so the friction between players is lessened.

ESO does this. The MSQ of that game is entirely solo. You never have to group with a player if you don't want to. You can even get some of the best gear in the game (depending on build) through solo play. Then they have 4 man normal dungeons for those who want to group. Those who want a little more challenge have access to Veteran versions. You basically do the content you can do and are no way pressured to do content beyond your ability. FFXIV could benefit from this example.

It's actually a very realistic portrayal of "game hobbyists". the modern gamer DOES play more than 1 game at once and Yoshi knows that. It's only the tail ends of the bell curve (super casual and super hardcore) that tend to only play 1 game for months at a time, due to preference or life situation. I would get so bored with FFxiv if it was the only thing I played, so I jump between it, my Switch, my ps4, and other PC games.

I actually prefer this approach. It allows me to catch up on my game backlog. But I must differ on Overwatch. People generally only massively play during the start of competitive (and if youre high enough just a few times a day) or during seasonal events. Other than that, there's little incentive after a while to play 100%. Thats why I like the way FFXIV is because I can play Overwatch, Assassins Creed, and other games in between patches (aside from doing the FFXIV dailies). It's not so much as being a casual as it is, well sometimes theres just not enough time to play everything, and I'm glad they understand that. This way I don't have to choose one over the other.

What I don't understand is why people want to be mono-gamers. You can do more in life than just play FF14

I like ffxiv as it is i just want more complex to some jobs mainly the pet jobs

Let me break it down for you, since you've bought into the casual vs hardcore bigotry. Gaming for many is a hobby, and like any hobby many are better or more serious than others. Cycling for example, sometimes people ride for the exercise, sometimes they do it for the thrill of it and buy the expensive $1000-10,000 bikes and gear. No one would suggest that cycling is their life unless they doing it professionally (and some games allow for this too). One of my hobbies is collecting fire arms, I have over 20 of them, about $15,000 worth. I also like going to the range to fire them (not all at once of course). They're not my life, I don't have one hidden away in each nook and cranny. Video games are also my hobby, specifically MMOs. I like the strategy that comes with having a group or several groups together with different roles and strengths and tackling the encounters. That doesn't make it my life.

Let me explain where casual and hardcore comes from. This will explain why it is a bigotry that if mods were savvy of, would action people for bringing it up.

It started about 15 years ago. It happened in a few games around that same time. But the one that I saw it begin in the most was in Everquest. Prior to the Planes of Power expansion there was a bit of an equilibrium if you could call it that. Between those who grouped and those who raided (in those days soloing was hard for most). The amount of gear needed to do most content was from groupable content. If you were in Luclin in a smattering of classic, kunark, and velious stuff, it didn't matter. It was usually good enough to most of the group areas.

PoP released and that's when the requirements changed. Just to do the leveling stuff you needed some better gear than the smattering of gear players had acquired. The gear progression required by raiding content was now being applied to the group content. You needed a certain amount of HP/AC on a tank just to survive one mob, and so forth. Now players were being judged on the effort they spent on their characters. I'm not saying this wasn't the case before PoP. But this time it was required, just to do the content.

Some resented it. They didn't care to be measured in such a way. Some of you might be able to empathize as this is when parsers started to become a thing, and players were being compared to one another. Gear was a little more important than skill in some cases simply because of the simplicity of the 'rotations'. I say that in quotes because many classes were just one or two buttons to be pressed on cooldown. Can't really mess that up.

Anyway, those that were being rejected from the new content they just purchased were as expected a little miffed about it. That's when the terms casual and hardcore came about. In their words, to play casually meant they had a job, a life, and priorities outside the game that kept them from attaining the ability to do the stuff they were being barred from. Those that did have the ability were 'hardcore' and were capable of doing the content because they spent their life playing the game 8+ hours a day.

Hardcore was used a slur (and still is), out of jealousy. In retribution, those players being called no life's didn't really take to it well either and hence the term filthy casual came about.

The irony is, for anyone of us who have played MMO's for a minute know that raiding is typically the least playing playstyle out there. Most raid groups in various games spend 2-4 hours raiding, twice a week. That's 4-8 hours a week. Where as a 'casual' plays every day for a time that matches and in many cases doubles or triples that of the prior. this is due to lengthy respawn timers (in the case of open world, like EQ) or weekly dungeon/loot lockouts (WoW, FFXIV, ect).

The point is. The casual vs hardcore dynamic is based on misconceptions, bigotry, and just plain jealousy and envy that ought not be there. I think many would seek to refrain from such terms if they experienced the origins. This little history lesson will do little to change people's minds. But at least it will make them think on the subject. Why are you calling someone who's in a better spot in the game than you, hardcore? Is it really because that's all they do with their life? Well.. many will find, if they actually do a little soul searching and thinking objectively, will find that isn't the case.

Just like any other hobby, some take it more seriously, but that doesn't mean they devote their life to it.

TO OP: In FFXIV its great that players can rise to the challenge if they want to, and they don't have to if they don't want too. You make the decision to play every time you start up the game. You make the decision what to play every time you bring up your Duty Finder. The most important thing is that you have fun doing what you're doing. :)

The idea behind those job levels was that they would take the same amount of time leveling. Like 1-50 would take just as long as 30-60 and the same for 50-70. Of course squadron missions sort of made that point moot, but that was the intention at the time.

Kaethra, I agree with everything you have just said, including the changes to MSQ to remove 4 man and 8 man instances. I know where you are coming from with EQ. I was a full-time raider there and I remember when the gear gap started to grow and grow. I remember how many people jumped ship for more casual games like EQII and WoW when they came out, as one of the main complaints on the forums was inability to do anything without a group and a huge gear gap between the raiders and the non-raiders. I think they made a valiant effort with trying to incorporate dungeons and trials into the MSQ, but I agree with you that the absolute mixing of so many different mentalities just creates a lot of toxicity and friction. More separation would mean that those who are at those higher levels choose to be there, and they choose to meet the requirements that are expected at that level.

Absolutely not true. It's not black and white. It's a situation where player aptitude is on a curve. You have some horrible players. You have some godly players. You have most players average.

They find something which works for them in question and doing the MSQ trials and instances and look no further. Why should they? For a large portion of players, FFXIV is a game.

Players who want to push themselves are a different personality. They are much more competitive than they average base player. They are also more willing to do research into their class and the content. These players see FFXIV as a sport.

There is a lot of common ground between the two types of players. It just takes patience from the "sports" crowd and a willingness to learn from the "games" crowd. Sadly, it's just human nature for people to dig in their heels because they think their way is the best. All you can do is laugh, and either leave, or jump on into the content with both feet.

Now, I actually like the idea of removing four man and eight man trials from the MSQ. Several friends have told me the requirement to do hard mode dungeons for the story was the reason they went back to World of Warcraft.

This confused me, at first, because even though hard mode is more difficult than normal mode, it isn't soul crushingly hard. It just makes you pay more attention.

Sure, I've wiped a few times along the way; but, I've improved enough* that I have down every hard mode challenge I've faced so far. But, I also understand that some players just want a game.

*Health and meds affect both my awareness and my reaction time. I still manage to enjoy the story and its challenges.

I'm going to put this into perspective.

Take the Red Mage class for example. Everytime you use a spell, dualcast pops up. Veraero and Verthunder have long cast times, they're meant to be used with dualcast in mind with a quick casting Jolt/II/Impact. In addition you have a melee combo that becomes enchanted when mana levels are high and balanced. I just described the basics of the class. After this comes the normal DPS stuff, do your rotation, avoid aoes, kill adds, do mechanics, and so forth. Finally use utility/roll actions as needed to buff the party, boost your mana, and so forth.

Have I said anything that is beyond what anyone is doing here? No I highly doubt it. Even people here who haven't played the class understand what I'm talking about. Yet I've seen people 'not get it'. I was in a dungeon about 3 days ago where a Red Mage was hard casting verthunder. This wasn't a prepull cast, this was near the end of the fight. The amount of damage to say the least that they were contributing was alot lower than mine to say the least.

What you describe as people taking the game more seriously takes 'they get it' to a whole nother level. Or so at least in your opinion it does. But does it really? These players do the math, do the testing on dummies. And find the BiS gear and materia to get ahead. But other than that. What are they doing that you can't or don't want to do? I know what it is, but suffice to say, knowing how to play the class is not part of it. Make no mistake, they are putting more work in that department than you are.

But are they actually heads and tails better? No. The average player knows to dodge AoEs. The average player knows to deal with adds. The average player knows all the mechanics they need to deal with. Sure they may struggle in a new encounter, but they'll learn it. The difference in performance isn't drastic. Just like some who 'don't get it' will still dodge stuff and try to do their role even if they've got no clue how to do the basics of their class.

The real difference is the organization. Those who play at the top level rely on statics and organization and teamwork of like minded players. If you're saying you're incapable of doing that, I'm going to call BS on that. You're responding to me in a clear and coherent manner. That alone tells us you're totally capable of doing the top end content of this game. You have the basics of your class. You know how to maximize the class through gear. And you're capable of intelligent communication. You're capable of learning mechanics (I assume, you've given me no reason to believe otherwise). What other ability are you lacking? I don't believe you do. And take it as a compliment if you wish.

A desire not to play in the highest content does not equal an incapability of it. Not wishing to adhere to a schedule to do content is NOT a sign of ineptitude.

There IS varying degrees within players who know what they are doing and those who don't. But within those two parameters, the differences are almost negligible. Again only limited by desire or outside influences (like physical handicaps or bad internet), or simply other priorities.

I just like to see more jobs like dps beastmaster and summoner that more complex and close to the ff games
plus blue mage jobs
summoner should be more like ff summoner

beastmaster i like see ability command the beautiful beast mobs and tamed them and raise them as pet up lvling them. i fine with mainline quest feature some dungeon and trials it a way test player metal to see if they up for the challange aswell

the devs should will to satified both hard core and casual players.

You lost me at first; but, now I think I understand. You're saying the key to advancement is more than knowing your class and playing the game well. You have to be willing to reach out to other players and work together as a team to progress in the harder modes of FFXIV. Did I get that right?

If so, I agree. Being able to form up and play in an organized fashion is imperative in difficult content. When I used to run raids in WoW I insisted everyone use Ventrilo just so I could explain things quickly and herd my little chicks along through the mechanics. :D

As far as performance, I still think practicing your rotation and understanding the mechanics of an encounter will make a significant impact in a player's damage per second, healing performance, and tanking effectiveness. But, I also feel it is possible to sharpen the knife too much. There comes a point when it becomes too easy to obsess over the numbers which leads to a kind of paralysis when time comes to play, as well as, burn out.

Very true. Since my life was turned upside down due to chronic unrelenting pain, I've been in the slow lane of life. But, I feel when the time comes for me to play with the "big boys" I'll do fine. Right now, I'm just happy as a little clam taking in all the sights, sounds, and tales as I go through ARR.

Many jobs are already too complex for their own good at max level, especially some DPS jobs. I enjoy a challenge but I want the challenge to be content and not learning my class. I want to be able to pick up and be able to play my class fairly well within a week and that doesn't happen with some dps classes in this game due to skill bloat which is still a problem in stormblood.

The less brainpower a player has to dedicate to their rotation and positionals the more they can focus on the mechanics in content and thus the more complex the actual content can be.

I don't think the dps are to complex i just wish the pets jobs dps wise were give more to them. i love have a one the tiger for ffxiv as beast master pets

drake and other are awesomely done SE has alot they could give to beastmaster as pets
