Free-to-play?

I've heard about a possibility to make FF14 a free-to-play game. I wanted to say my opinion: "Stop. Making FF14 a f2p game is a terrible, terrible idea". I think it would bring less maintenance to the game and, eventually, it's end. And I don't want FF14 to close (or to end like FF11 did).

However, maybe there are other ways where you could change. No f2p, but other ways.

1. Possibly not a good idea, but reducing the subscription prices. Not so much, but a little... But no. This is maybe not a good way. I don't know.

2. Include new languages. Yes, I'm Spanish and I want the game not only in my language, but in italian, portuguese as well (just text, not voices). By this way, you could reach new players. I know many people doesn't play just because the game is not in their own language (Spanish for example).

3. Retainers:

3.1. More free retainers. Currently, we can have a maximum of 2 free retainers, while getting more increasing our sub payment. Maybe you could change this by allowing players to have at least one or two more free retainers.

3.2. Retainers boost. I've seen you have included in MS a boost for retainers. Remove it. Boosts are for new players who want to play with their veteran friends at the same level, not for NPCs. Remove this and give retainers their own leveling system, so we can level them as BTN at 70, change them to MIN 1, and when we change them back to BTN, they are already at 70 because we already leveled them to BTN 70 before.

4. Seasonal event items. Maybe you could remove all previous seasonal event items from MS and make them always available when their event is up, along with the new items of course. So we can farm Haunted Manor not just for the new items, but for the old ones as well.

I remember seeing that on youtube earlier this month. As for when.. It was definitely before we got the 4.10 patch. But I do remember that Yoshi NEVER even said that it was a possibility. Just that if the playerbase were requesting it, they would "think about it". That's it. No possibility or nothing. And those youtubers are spreading that hoax too -_-

I beileve a more closer quote would be "if 80 to 90% of the player base asked for FFXIV to go F2P, he would think about it" feel free to tell me i'm wrong but at least 80% of the player base are saying "NO NO NO, HELL NO" to FFXIV going F2P

I cant link it either but I've seen references to that interview before. I would only worry if he mentions it in a live letter. Keep in mind they were very luke warm on jump potions and saying that ultimately the decision was his and if he decided to add them that it probably wouldnt be until 5.0, then boom, 4.0 jump potions.

If he comes out on a live letter very luke warm on F2P and saying it would take most of the playerbase asking for it, then prepare yourself...

(Keep in mind their metric for "asking for it" is less likely going to be forum posts from the vocal minority, and more the number of people who are unsubscribing)

The only time FFXIV went F2P was because of 1.0, and that's because there were a lot of things wrong with the game.
I doubt they'll do it again now.

It will never be even close to catch WoW in terms of most players, the numbers that are always used here are not the actuall paying players. But no FFXIV will, hopefully, never be f2p.

Two things to add, if anyone here is a Limit Break Radio listener they had an interesting point on last week episode - if Yoshi say this in a interview they already are considering it, they are talking about it! Other wise they would not casually say it to the public cause we will take their word for it. Just like with jump potion, Yoshi had stated it wouldn't happen until 5.0 but we all know what happend with that don't we.

Secondly, can we all stop calling it rumors and fake news? If our dear Yoshi said in a legit interview it a high possiblty it can happen, granted they get 80+ % of the base. Problem is in the bottomline money.

Square Enix is a company (yeah i know shocker) and if they see a trend where they can make much more money on micro trans, then they obviously going to consider it more serious than making 10M USD (a number i've seen somewhere, maybe not accurate) every month on the concurrent subs they have now. No they don't have 10M active subs.

1 reason XIV could go F2P before XI. Cash shop.
XI are hardcoded into Playonline a service that no longer is supported.

Yep. This is why you can't point to FFXI as proof that XIV will never go f2p. They simply cannot practically introduce a cash shop to XI or extricate it from PlayOnline in order to facilitate a transition to F2P. At least, not without a cost far higher than they'd likely see on the return, given XI has been retired to maintenance mode with no new content being developed.

there is and was never a beter mmorpg outside than ffxiv. i played the most mmorpgs exist before, i was never hyped more. i would pay 20a month to avoid free to play.

I'm kinda curious to where you got the assumption it would bring less maintenance to the game when the more well known and played FTP games do weekly maintenance to the games. Also more or less the reason why FFXI ended the way it did was as a game itself, its terribly outdated. It can't attract new players due to the sheer mountain that needs to be climbed to advance in the game, unless that player has established friends that play. Something FFXIV or any other modern FTP game where no matter who you are you can just jump right in and play and advance with no trouble has. That said do I think FFXIV will go FTP? Nah, it has enough fans and people that play it on name alone, it will survive.

mog wardrobe 3 + 4 are basically cash shop / sorta like retainers. The fee is added to your monthy 11 sub.

Of course they've considered it - they are a business, after all, and a good business will consider more than one path.

Which is, quite obviously, how they reached the conclusion that enough (the 80%+) of their playerbase would have to want it for them to make the switch, and otherwise they don't plan on doing it.

Honestly, it's "interesting" points like the one LBR made that are half responsible for these crap rumors spreading in the first place.

ff11 is still active

they changed the game a lot, such as removing the locks on content, and adding the trust system. you can go from 1-99 easy solo now cuz of the amount of systems on place.


also i played a large number of fp games and they rarely get updated. the week maint is mostly to shut the servers down, do repair work. Most western mmo do it once a week.

Why people are so afraid of the word "Free-To-Play"...? If a good game goes free to play, it will still be a good game. And I know some FtP that are great and have many updates. I'm more inclined of spending real money on cash shop or cosmetics when the game is free to play. And I'm not the only one. Afraid of the lack of update with new content...? Well it could hardly be worst than what we have now with a sub...

Same can be said for Everquest 1 and other games from the period. They changed a lot to the game to make it new player friendly, but even with those changes there was no wave of new players beating the doors down to the servers looking to play them. Also I've played a good number of FTP games and they're always being updated. It might not always be in the form of major content. Those kinda updates come maybe every couple of months. The regular updates are more or less mini events and things to keep players busy and active while waiting for major updates.

the day where ffxiv goes f2p is the day where ill stop to play it ^^

and no i dont want f2p , u will only end up paying way more then a sub :P and get less content, and more cash shop items.

edit : and no i dont see ffxiv going f2p any time soon , what ever reasons someone thinks there might be , its like saying that earth was visited from aliens in ancient age :P

SWTOR is pretty much a prime example of why going F2P is a bad idea and also a prime example of just how lacking in content a game can be when they rely on other methods to get their money. They haven't offered Operations in a LONG time and even their single player content is lacking. That game also has probably the ultimate variety when it comes to items to spend your money on and yet it's not enough to produce results as EA continuously lets the quality flounder. Also people keep saying we have a dirth of content in this game and yet comparatively to most titles I've been a part of we're actually going quite well with consistent quality and regular updates. Coming from Lotro and SWTOR it's like night and day. Especially the former as most of that content was so hit and miss after the Rohan expansion that they never decided on a clear direction for it to take. One patch it's all single player instances, the next it's required multiplayer to appease those they left behind, and back and forth until it drove you absolutely mental. Yet even then the content was spaced out by months or YEARS and fed to you in such a slow drip that it solidified my current burning hatred of WB. The game only /just/ got to Mordor this year. THIS YEAR.

Also there's one other reason this game will never /ever/ go free to play, and that's because it's currently the source of much of SE's current funding. Yoshi-P had to beg to access the money needed to move the servers and perform certain upgrades because most of it just goes straight back into SE's coffers to help them create other games like FFXV.

Main problem is that many Free-To-Play games introduce truely horrible grinds - worse than anything currently in FFXIV - and then allow people to pay to bypass most of it. So either grind or pay to ... not play.
As regards updates with new content? FFXIV currently gets that quite often compared to many other MMOs. It could very easily be much, much worse.

The problem is free to play so easily becomes pay to win. And in free to play things are designed in such a way so as to encourage you to buy your way through.

If you took for example the aether/light grind step on anima weapons end of heavensward and converted it to a free to play equivelant
You'd likely find you needed to grind 10,000 points of aetheric condensation instead of 2,000 points.

Or you could could "optionally" buy an item from the cash shop for say $4.99 that gave you those 10,000 points when used. or maybe even smaller one for $0.69 that gave you a thousand points. and players could buy 10 of them if they wanted.

A similar thing might have existed with the initial fate step for the crystals. the drop rate might have been worse leaving you grinding even more fates or you could pay $1.99 for a set of 3 crystals from one of the 6 zones...

All The grinds would be all be extended for the sole purpose to make those boost items look more appealing. And often in doing so the game becomes pay to win. Because those who pay would inevitably have the best equipment a hell of a lot faster than those who didn't

Then people try to deny it's pay to win because those items can be obtained through game play without paying. But the way to attain is deliberately made so high or time intensive that its really not a viable option..

This is why so many people hate free to play and avoid it like the plague
