Visual Gear Damage

I think it would be a cool effect that gear matches its condition. Possibilities of 3 visual tiers.
FABULOUS
Gear has seen better days (Orange)
Looks broken and nasty (red)

How outlandish would this be? And it would only need to be on primary items like Body/Legs/Head

that would be way to much for the little gain it would give visualy....

there would have to be three versions of every piece of visable gear, for every race. now unless the way things are displayed is simplified alot in 2.0, it would be to much demand on systems.

Can we just get rid of gear condition then?

Though this is something that wouldn't necessarily be needed in the game, it would be a pretty nice added touch down the line! In Vindictus, they have a similar feature -- armor gets dulled, rusted, and scratched, woven items look worn and the color fades with wear as durability goes down.

I'm not certain but I think there is slight visual gear damage at least on some thaumaturge weapons. I recall having a ivory staff at 0% and quickly repaired it and it looked brighter.

I don't know about the ps3 limitation ,
but currently i think it's the client limitation is the major problem that is slacking off everything

come to think of it this way to make visual gear damage it's mean
1.new texture
2.this texture will be triggered when your gear is getting damaged
3.the trigger will launched the new texture to replace the old one that is currently on display of the gear
( or maybe some kind of filter )

That means the developer have to create new texture and write on some code to fixed the client for make use of it
and if they do come to think about the sending/receiving from client to server. ( cuz this game keep everything up on their server , even for something that is can only be client based )

Every single character have to reloaded the texture of gear ( like when you get chaged / take off gear )
every time the gear is damage , as you all knows about the lagging , delaying and graphic loading speed
( that use amount on your pc power ) and yes to be frank that will be interrupted the battle for sure.

Even as a joke this is largely incorrect as there's a lot of PS3 games utilizing engines that can show visual wear & tear in various aspects that are indeed online.

From what I remember they said the current client design prevents a lot of stuff like this since it prevents being able to see a lot more models in general.

they may be online, but they are 4 players at most, there is a big difference in that and an MMORPG

To do this:

Every item would need 2-3 new textures for "slightly damaged" "Medium Damage" and "Heavy Damage". Possibly "Broken"

Re texturing every item is a lot of work.

There is -- But the PS3 can handle it since it's mostly memory and processing power, which is what the PS2 lacked (hence "PS2 Limitations".)

A lot of the newer engines and updates to previous ones (Unreal and Havok for example) are done specifically to allow small details like this even to online/MMORPGs -- The only thing is in how the MMO itself is designed, if it's designed to take full advantage and designed to utilize memory correctly, it can easily be done.

If it's just a straight port, very little possibility of it happening.

This would be fabulous!

A freshly crafted pair of subligar would be sparkly.
As they get worn, they would become faded.
And ultimately be stained in all sorts of combat excitement.
And repairing it would be like washing them!

While they're at it, weather effects on our clothing.

When it rains, the metallic armors get shiny and the water drips down.
Or when there's a heatwave, and I'm wearing my coatee, sweat glistens on my body, and [removed for explicit content]

If they do like it's on the ps3 system the possibility is to be considering ,
but as of now SE put everything that should be on the client side ( like in ps3 ) to the server side that's why it's impossible for FFXIV now.

I meant for the new engine definitely. It takes long enough to load people around me. But the way they said they had textures and models made is so they can be shaped into many things. It would give someone a job for the backlog of gear, but making job gear and 2.0 gear they could have it in mind from the start.

You already got an F2P MMO for that.

You do realize how much this idea would take from developing actual environments, content, and variation in monster models/armor, right?

Also, I'm quite sure whatever this "fabulous" bug that is going around is pissing me off as much, or maybe more, than the MLP signatures everywhere.

I believe that with the new engine triggering a change in armor, would not need the "reload" aspect of your character as it can be bypassed. Keep in mind, this is the new engine we are talking bout, not the old. I'd like to see it happen, it would give gear more details.

Also, the decay of battle on an armor piece could be a variation of the model piece (For example a torn chest piece or missing shoulder pad). Meaning a new texture wouldn't just be the case. It'd be a whole new model itself.

I really like something like this (heck, even the 3° birthday have it), however i feel it's quite difficult. Just think all the work they should do D: 3 different textures for every piece of gear, related physic... with this graphic i don't think it's reasonable all that work

I don't understand why people think it would be OMG SO MUCH EXTRA WORK!!! If you watched the developer videos that were exclusive to the Collector's Edition (or YouTube for you cheaters!), you'd see that they made certain models, with parts that are interchangeable. That means, they really only have to make one piece of armor, and can remove parts for different sets (like the Steel set is just the Cobalt set minus a few shiny parts).

They'd still need to set up a texture map for a "almost broken" and a "completely broken" gear set, but it would be applied to every piece of gear. It's not nearly as much work as people think it is.

I should point out that if they're following a filing system similar to Final Fantasy XI (which I believe they are), they have an individual .dat file for each piece of gear, which is why it takes so long for stuff to load sometimes.

They mention the Color ID (I think that's the name...correct me if I'm wrong) system they're working on for Version 2, which would allow any piece of gear to be colored how you want. This would be the perfect time to implement something like a damaged gear feature. The new system framework sounds like it will be able to read a model file, and stick a texture on it, without having to make it an entirely new model, which is what it feels like we have now.

nifty idea - i have already seen a korean MMO do this, albeit in a more "adult" manner.. hehehe.. but it was pretty neat to see everyones armor "wear" after taking a bit of dmg.

i vote for this idea, but SE is all about looking "good" (IE:Style happy) so i wont hold my breath.

I would be all for this if this game didn't involve my character to stand still while i change a piece of gear. The inconvenience of armor showing a visual decay would definitely be a terrible idea since you know your character would visually blink away for a second.

yeah they would have to do away with the blinking. Maybe they are in 2.0? *shrugs*

in other games yes..... but FFXI and FFXIV use a DAT file for each armor piece for every race/gender so in relation to FFXIV right now, it could not happen, maby when 2.0 and their new engine

No it doesnt lol Textures are completely separate to the models, which are seperate to the skeletons, even shaders and bump mapping is seperated within the dat file (if you dont know, Dat file is just a container, its just several files that have been melded together as 1)

Infact there is kind of this already, the illusion of it anyway. Look at the gear from when you start, say the Pugilist set, it is worn, it is torn, its dirty, then look at velveteen pugilist gear, its same model, just a better texture.

There are a lot of textures that are currently not being used that could give this affect, and it would not be hard to do really if you're just switching between textures.

yes I know what a DAT file is, I used to mess around alot with FFXI DAT modding. and again, it is not that simple, the archaic way SE has done DATs in FFXI and in FFXIV would not allow this to be done easily. Again could not happen now, but maybe in 2.0+ would be an interesting thing to see too, but again, not something I would want them focusing on.

They are fixing that though because of the dying system.

The only problem is that when you change gear in this game the character blinks so im not sure how they could change the look of gear without that happening.

Edit:- Now that I think about it when you ready an ifrit weapon it changes appearance so its not the case.

Technically it doesn't since its effect is still there it just doesn't show while active. They'd have to redo each item to actually show the changes.
