Black mage could gain more use for her or his sleep spell

BLM's support is damage and being the best candidate for a mana battery.
RDM is already support in being a sub healer and helping with raising.
BRD (and to a much lesser extent, MCH) is already by definition a support dps, have you seen what we bring to a party just by keeping our songs up?

There's no point in adding a new role. You either bring in the deeps, or you bring utility to help other people deeps and thus fall more into a support role, but still ultimately a dps. That's the balance in this game.

The problem with Support jobs is, if they realy want to make a Support role, then groups will be forced to take 1 Support class with them. Another issue is the Support class must not excel at the other roles, otherwise what is the point in taking a DPS, if a Support class can not only provide the same amount of DPS, but also add Support abiltiies.

When I think of Support role, I think more then few crowd controls spells, I think of buffs, debuffs, ability to off-tank or off-heal. Having 1 or 2 crowd control abilities does not make the class a support class. If you want to see real Support roles, look at some of the classes in RIFT or the Chanter from Aion.

Support classes are a nightmare to balance and I'm glad Yoshida understands this and will never give us a pure support class. I've seen support classes in another mmo and let me tell you I'm glad we don't have them in ffxiv. I don't support this in ffxiv, ever.

Scrap what I said. I was half asleep when I wrote it and was thinking sub job not support job. I actually think support job would be good as long as the duty finder was replaced to reflect this. SE did say at one point they were working on this idea and it would cut down the dps queues.

They just never work, they're underwhelming and only good in the best of situations and completely uneeded in most situations.

As others have said they would either be mandatory or useless. There seems to be no middle ground in MMOs.
Also look at the stats of those who play the defacto 'support' roles (i.e. healers and tanks) currently, non dps classes are generally not played/loved by the majority – I would imagine adding a pure support class would suffer the same indifference.

I loved Bard in FFXI, however this is FFXIV and the amount of reworking required would be colossal (not to mention disruptive). Also all of your support classes seem to be the entire spread of ranged DPS classes we already have (except for SMN, which is a better fit than BLM as a support already).

not the case in FFXI at all. they were too good. rdm and bard (and later corsair and geomancer) were some of the most requested jobs in the history of the game. bard being the best. if you played bard you basicly had to set yourself on do not disturb or people would ask you all day to come do stuff.

I really think if summoner could have all they summon Demi and have carbruncle more as the fight between demi and companion it work well. if summoner could have demi titan garuda and Ifrit aswell as a Demi Shiva and Ramuh and Bahamut plus have just Diamond and Amethyst Carbruncle, it be really work well for summoner. when I got 70 on summoner I final felt like it become summoner again. Summoner's Demi could give buff for example

instead have it summon Bahamut it could

summon have selection of Demi to chose for. see to me summoner is only draw on the Prime power for short time while carbruncles are more could a faction of the Prime more like a small factions

Also Diamond and Amethyst could thunder and Ice carbruncles

Hmm but it's like another person said, they're either only good in few situations or too good and required, balancing pure support classes is a nightmare.

No need to say sorry savagelf. Your idea is a good opinion as any opinion, no worries :)
Summoner as support is a nice/fun idea and I wouldn't mind if it got more support skills like borrowing buffs from the demi summons like you said. Ifrit could give damage, garuda skill/spell speed, Titan defense.

Things like that are really fun I agree. But I don't like puuuuure support classes. I still want summoner to be dps first and maybe support as second role.

As noted, dedicated Support roles simply wouldn't work in FFXIV. If their benefits are too substantial, they become mandatory in group comps aka what happened with Astro when Balance was buffed into the moon. On the other hand, if their benefits are minimal, why take them at all over a damage dealer? Attempting to balance that fine line is nightmarish. And let's be honest, the dev team already struggles with the current system.

If anything, I feel they could be more flexible about balancing the support we already have on offer. Not in terms of raid balance (though obviously that has to be considered with any changes), but just in terms of fun. I feel that my BRD and even BLM offer more interesting support than my WHM, outside of the obvious healing duties. I want to help people more, and in more interesting ways, but I don't think we need to rework the core party design to accomplish that.

I think Support is also what you make of it. SAM, for instance, has zero built-in utility aside from its high damage, but that doesn't stop me from crossing over Goad and Leg Sweep and Feint. People really don't expect SAM to do anything but kill things and suddenly I show up lmao.
Then you'll have the occasional BRD and MCH who won't cross Tactician and Refresh. So it really is also a matter of how you use the cards you're dealt.

I would play a support role, I think it's possible to design one that's engaging enough, but yeah it will never happen in this game. 3 roles forever. Next time they make an FF mmo I'd like no roles, I think it limits creativity because jobs need to meet certain criteria for the role they are in and are homogenised a little.

The reason why the devs won't add a support role is because it means every single content will have to be adjusted to put them in, and they don't have time for that. Hopefully I remember it right.

I like how support abilities are baked into tanks, healers and DPS so let's keep it that way.
