Blue Mage tank???

I'm not sure if I've got this in the right spot or not, but in the middle of levelling my BLM and doing expert roulette as my PLD, a wild idea came to mind. What if we had the ability to play a dual wielding caster type tank??? The Blue Mage would essentially wear "of Casting" gear to maximize damage and be able to dual wield like the ninja, the job quests would give you your melee abilities plus whatever OGCDs square decided to throw in. You would have a separate ability book (actions and traits->actions) showing you what spells you could learn from monsters and possibly what mobs to learn them from. Yes the "of Casting" gear would limit the high HP pool for standard tanks but that's where spells that apply shadows (FFXI's occultation (grants caster up to 8 shadows to absorb attacks)) come into play as a form of decent damage mitigation. I know it sounds really broken but it would be cool to see it in game and how square fixes it to make it more bearable XD thank you for reading.

Wouldn't really make sense to make them tanks in the FF series I feel. The major problem I see with blue mage is they are pretty much like red mage role wise but with higher AoE dmg usualy.

They deal ok damage have ok heals and nice utility. In pretty much every FF with blue mage the class start out with some really strong heals/dmg spell making them at some point overpowered dealing the best dmg while having white wind like ability beeing overpowered heals.

Then later in the game they just become a support class.

With the over abundance of DPS/Support vs the only 3 tank and 3 healer class I could see SE making them healers but FFXIV really miss a melee healer and not a 4th caster healer wearing cloth.

There are threads already about this, and you'll get plenty fo people who claim BLU doesnt feel like a tank, and plenty who feel it does feel like a tank.

Most arguments stem from physical defense of a BLU more than anything. But since tanks arent really a thing in offline FFs, and there's other ways to survive physical dmg, this feels less like a legitimate point.
(And physical defense isnt as important as survivability. An example being NIN tanks in XI, who didnt have the platemail of a PLD WAR or DRK, and yet you didnt really see DRK tanks till much later, and NIN tanks in leather with evasion/haste gear to survive as a tank. If anything, the argument about "Fending gear" being restricted from them, might be the most reasonable counter argument, since SE woudl probably not allow them to use it, but want all tanks to use it.)
BLUs easily have some of the most survival out of the mages, with RDM being a close 2nd, in most FFs. (But some FFs they dont)

BLUs need to survive all attacks they learn, and with their buff spells, and usually equipped with light or even medium armors, they were always able to survive all types of attacks, and recover from it rather easily.

BLUs had some of the most reliable AoE, for low MP cost, and always moderate potency.
Where as SMN cost way too much MP for AoE, and BLM/WHM AoE was very low potency usually.
(RDM usually never having AoE, and lacked decent MP pools)

Out of all the roles, tanks always have on demand AoEs, and use them often.
Out of all the roles, the role that self heals, uses defensive buffs, aoes, melees, and ranges rather often, is mainly tank. (with RDM being next in line. but thats not a role, but a job within a role.)

The only questionable part, is the enmity.

Why would BLU have anything to raise enmity?
In which I'd say its "tank stance" wouldnt be for defense, but for learning BLU magic. Cant learn it, unless they are int hat "Learn" stance. and it increases threat, to encourage enemies attack them, so they can learn.
I'd then rename the current Mighty Guard, so they can use Mighty Guard as their "defense stance" but it comes at a cost. (Basically a DPS loss, but it doesnt have to be direct potency loss really, anything from MP, cast times, or other)

But thats about as simple as i can put it.

When you put it that way, you could add a form of stance dance to the BLU as well. I like the idea of using MG as the tank stance, but it would have to be limited to using like occultation/semi weak heals. But now that I think about it there aren't many monster based heals in the game except "Sanguine Bite" that I know of from the wolf race? And if the BLU was to learn "Sanguine Bite" i almost feel like it would be as strong as an unbuffed "Souleater/Storms Eye". I may be wrong but that's all I can think of off the top of my head XD. Now as for the huge AOE they could put a DRK feel to it as well and say that the BLU couldn't use them unless they were n the attack stance only (unbridled learning/wisdom perhaps)? I feel like that would balance it out more..? Of course it would almost always be an off tank haha

This. Essentially Gun Mage from FFX-2. BLU would be severely limited as a tank.

I was just thinking about this the other day! Would love to see it wield Twin Hooks as a weapon. Give it something similar to dark dance, but increase damage reduction by X amount after Parry an attack.

Could have an AoE abilities where you hook swords together for wide swings and pokes with the hilts for Aero generation. Also white wind being a Regen version of divine veil, and mighty guard being similar to a weaker tank Limit break, or even similar to the blackest night on a long cool down but effects the whole party for longer duration (stoneskin 2)

Base defense in this game hardly make a difference. (its why people saw +20% defense from Foresight as weak, and not a means to survive physical tank busters, At best, only worked when I stacked it with -10% dmg taken, and even then, sometimes i still died.)

As a tank in the MSQs, I felt like the solo fights were far easier as a tank. Then semi easier as a healer, and the hardest as a DPS. (DRG didnt feel any easier than BLM in how quickly the dmg stacked up on me.)
While defense does help, the high max HP is the biggest reason, followed by self healing.
I can play BLM, SMN, and RDM, with the same gear, and RDM is easily going to feel liek im "not squishy" compared to what feels like squishy BLM/SMN, due to self healing.

Looking at WAR, who uses "+Max HP" as a tank stance, alone shows that defense isnt all that important.
-X% dmg taken is king for tanking, followed by max hp and self healing.

In caster gear, that would give them good Magic Defense.
Using VIT accessories, that can slightly help their max HP, but they would have to have a natural high HP base, like the other tanks do out of fending gear. (Main issue here, is that it gives STR not INT for the secondary stats, unless we make both STR and INT add together for the dps of the BLU)

So this leaves Tank stance to be the main means of closing the gap. (personally I would want the tank stance to be a 0.5s cast, perma buff, until turned off.)
I'd also like to see a 2nd buff needing to be cast every so often, to raise general mitigation. (If we make an AoE White Wind, which acts liek a weaker Medica2, it acts as both threat, and helps lower the amount of healing healers need to do, both on them, and the group. If not that, then something like the blink spell, for higher evasion. Its not reliable for tank busters, but helps on general auto attack dmg from trash mobs)
Currently Tanks have something around 20-25% mitigation/max hp increases.
And then the go to mitigation of rampart, and some other higher potency mitigation, and a "short CD" mitigation on ramparts level. (ignoring the invincible one for obvious reasons)
Id like to see something more like The Blackest Night, where you cast a buff to mitigate dmg, but do so often. Give it a short CD, and it can be a mini Inner Beast.
But since it takes up a GCD, and does no dmg, the lost dmg would be in the tank stance, in how it doesnt reduce as much dmg as normal tank stances usually do. (same with having to cast white wind/blink equivalent)

Those alone would make BLU tanky enough, and thats not including the FFTA version fo BLU, using Damage MP to be an unkillable god.

One day I had a weird idea that BLU is the only new job they release in an expansion, but it's also the only job with 3 specs. Tank BLU, Healer BLU, DPS BLU.

So it's more like getting 3 new jobs, but less work for the dev in designing gear, animations, job quests etc. Gear, quests and some spells are common to all 3 specs, but there are some role-locked spells too of course to satisfy the demands of each role.

You can't switch role during battle or during an instance, it's still something you set before queuing for a duty so it's not a game breaker. Bring back lots of classic blue magic like mighty guard, white wind, magic hammer, goblin punch.

And there only needs to be one version of blu for pvp, the caster dps spec.

This is genius! One would just equip different soulstones of different BLU mages who sought to learn the arts of monsters, one BLU soulstone of healing, one of slaying, and one of fending. Could make the stones green, red, and blue respectively. The job quests could come from an expert on blue mage lore, and you are tasked with reliving the adventures of past said blue mage to empower the soulstone. Could even be added to the game that BLU is a lost art, and the tomes detailing their exploits were recently uncovered.

People were saying that forever with RDM (which imo, would have been the better option for.)
I do think it would be nice to alternate between "playstyles" on BLU.
instead of role, you pick which playstyle within that role you like better.
(the only example of this, would be the MT/OT, or MH/OH set ups for tanks/healers, but for DPS, you have Melee, Caster, Ranged, each with their own style. (Positionals with WS, and Goad/fient. Cast bars but no combos, and addle/manashift. lower dmg ranged, with party buffs. But the whoel MT/OT and MH/OH set up has been sorta squashed with SEs horrible attempt at balance, and refusal to add more tanks/healers to make it work better)

what kind of armor Blue Mage used i the past isn't really important as SE can just make them where tank armor in 14. Even if the job gear doesn't look tanky it still can have the same defence as the pld or drk set. just look at the lv70 war set. it doesn't look sturdy at all.
Though if we look at the past BLU had access to shields as well.
I guess they would yield shamshirs. wonder if that would mean redesigning some of the PLD weapons again as they did when nin was released.
Anyway I think BLU can work as tank.

Hmmm lets look back a bit. A mage type tank. Tanks prioritize on what trait...think about it...Blu would prioritize on what trait? think about it...Even with accessories you would be unbalancing two of the main traits. It would be saying lets put Tendency based on a BLM instead of Spell speed / INT. Blue mages, based on lore depend on two factors. Learning attacks and the potency of them. Hence they would make better support than tanks. Blackest Night Migrates and still some DRK don't use it properly -.-. You would still be trowing off main the main traits for tanking or being a mage. I will admit there are some situations were BLU was a great tank on some battles, mainly in FFXI , and I loved BLU as well. However making them into a tank role would may, big maybe work on old content as a high level. Even with buffs how would you be able to incorporate their lore into FFXIV? Maybe like the battle of warriors of darkness in the alternate reality the RDM is the BLU instead. The only reason FFTA Blue seemed like an proficient tank type was do was do to poor AI even with the Law system and Jagds ( which were joke ) only made it a so so difficulty.

There is definitely a chance for this and is my guess at the next tank class for this game. FFXI version definitely showed blu capability as a tank as it does this fairly well and if they adapted it for this game there is scope for this as well as it being any other role. It will get its abilities from the monsters it fights so spells and abilities for tanking, healing and dps can come from this, its just open to what the devs wish it to be. I would be kinda disappointed if they end up making it a dps as essentially thats what ffxi meta made it though it was fully customisable for any role really.

I already said that. (which is where the real issues stem from. Though I would still argue for plenty of work arounds.)

Which imo, is pretty much the same thing. WARs use holmgang in speed runs as if it were their only mitigation. The trick isnt to lower dmg, but to survive it. THEN lower it.)

I dont really see any of this meaning anything to FFXIV. (or even outside of it)
Though BLU being a "support" i wouldnt fully disagree with, but with how FFXIV is set up, and since the job best suited for being a caster tank is now a DPS, BLU is the 2nd best option for being a tank.
BLU just needs a minimum of a 0.5s Cast bar, which leaves them mobile, and able to take hits w/o worry of spells being canceled constantly. It prevents them from kiting as a tank, since they would have ranged attacks.
It also prevents too much auto attack dmg, which imo is what would make their tank stance not need to lower thier base dmg as much as other tank stances. (including the rare interupt, due to perfect timing fo auto attacks and your 0.5s cast time.)

WAR used to be the "Support" tank, but now PLD and DRK have the support, with PLD having the most.

Personally want to see more party utility from BLU, similar to PLD, but with a higher skill ceiling like WAR, but more so for survival, less so dps/threat.
(Would like a AoE regen White Wind to replace the tanks typical AoE threat, as they then use cone Breath Spells as filler on trash mobs. To make up for trash mobs hitting far more often, give breath a 1.5s cast bar, a much shorter CD version of surecast, and make it only stop interruptions of normal attacks. But crits can still interrupt by 50% or higher. (making awareness work well with it) Ideally ready at the start of each pull, but not last the whole pull, so u have to go into melee attacks/melee spells.

So far every tank has their ranged pull on a 15yalm limit, with PLD having a spell cast that reaches the normal 25yalms.

I'd like to see the ranged pull on a 25yalm, but with a 0.5s cast, sol you still have to stop moving to use it, but literally only for as long as u press the button, and can pretty much move instantly right after.
I'd also make it a DoT, so it wouldnt be spammed for kiting purposes. (similar to Aero)

BLU historically used all stats for spells, you need a lot of HP for breath spells. some use STR, some use AGI, some your level, or enemies level.
BLU doesnt stick to just INT and MND.

BLU prioritizes on INT and MND , other traits are enhanced based on what Blue mage magic learns and is set. The effectiveness and potency is still based on MND and INT for the majority of them. For the offensive skills they only add a buffer based on alternate modifiers such as AGI, DEX, and STR

Thats not true. Look at Goblin punch. INT and MDN arent a factor in the equation.
Look at "LvX XXXX" spells, INT isnt a factor.

Dependent on the FF, even White Wind isnt effected by anything other than HP.
Dependent on the FF, Breath spells are only effected by your current HP. (in XI i know they were primarily HP, with INT being next, making BLUs equip tank gear, and a elemental staff, to maximize the DPS on endgame bosses.)
Using XI again, you had physical spells which NEVER touched INT or MND (no matter which part of the equation you looked at, weapon dmg/STR/attack/blue magic potency were the only stats looked at), and magical spells which commonly used either INT or MND as the main stat.

Heck in in FF5 each spell for BLU had its own formula for how to do dmg, with Aero using typical spell forumlas using the games equivalent of INT.
But some of FF5 BLU spells use only Attack power (STR) solely. (so equipping a sword is better to raise their dmg, not staves/wands)

In FF5, there are 30 BLU spells, and only 8 that use INT/MND, and 3 of them are just Aero1,2&3.
Most use HP. (aka, increase HP)

.. But this isn't 11 so they could redesign it very easily..

What if instead of being tanky themselves they make the enemy weaker
For example maybe a skill reduces damage that monster deals to the blue mage (would probably be strong if it reduces damage to everyone)

Pld has 2 spells that scale off of skill speed and strength that are white magic. Red mages vercure scales off of int even tho it's white magic. Why exactly would it be so hard to scale blu's spells off of strength for sake of balance?

They made DRK into a tank. Not seeing a problem with a BLU tank.

It would be nice if Mighty Guard weren't already taken by the tank limit break, it would be a really suitable tank stance for this idea. Big Guard is also a thing but it's nowhere near as prevalent in the series.

To be fair, in XI, quite a few jobs could be more than 1 thing.
Casters could sub WHM or BRD to be healer or support. (at Lv50, if u dont have a BRD or RDM, /BRD for ballad1 is a god send, though most ppl didnt have BRD leveled to do it.)
Melee could sub WAR DNC or NIN to help tank or help heal. (you'd need 2 of them as either, to make it work.)

BLU was just good enough at all roles, that it didnt require that 2nd DPS job to make it possible. But that 2nd DPS helping did make a difference. (Be it tanking, healing, or support.)

by Lv75, every job in the game could tank the strongest endgame bosses, if they spent the time getting the proper gear/sub jobs. (In most cases, it was /NIN)
Seen every jailor tanked by every job, WHMs, BRDs, DRGs, etc (DRG being the hardest job to tank as, due to lack of threat w/o a THF SATA)

Cecil from FFIV was already a DRK tank. Them saying they made "DRK" into a tank isn't really saying much.

According to Yoshida, the amount it helped was practically not at all.
(So I'd assume something less than or equal to 1% difference)

For my own story on being a tank or not;
I was WAR in 1.0, then switched to PLD when i got it to 50 in 2.0.
I was starting to play BLM, WHM, and DRG more than PLD near the end of 2.0, but then when DRK came out, I mained it for all of HW.
So in my case, it made me stay on tank, but I had already played tank, but not fully.

Then 3.0 DRK changes made me hate it, and slightly WHM.
I took up RDM, and now i dont really touch WHM or DRK.
WAR is pretty fun now, honestly feels like an easier version of RDM, and RDM is already easy. (I enjoy easy, I dont get mental fatigued after 15-30mins of raiding, like I do as DRK and other jobs)

But unless they ruin RDM, and they will, they cant keep something fun, I dont see myself maining WAR.
I doubt Id main BLU either, but I do wanna mess around with it. They would have to do something pretty darn cool, for me to main it.

So honestly I think its more complex than "More people will tank if BLU can be a tank".
At most, we'd see a small % increase, but nothing really noticeable, other than people who level it for the 1st, time, and then are done with it. (Which isnt bad honestly, thats queues that get done.)

Yoshi mentioned something along these lines once upon a time. But this was related to the "hybrid" role/job concept that was floating around a few years ago. That idea involved equipping so many of one set of role-like abilities to determine your role (think RIFT trees).

Personally, I don't see BLU as a healer. But I definitely could see it as a job that could "shift" itself between DPS and Tank roles. I feel like it would be tied to the Role Abilities menu with just one soulstone, choosing which set of 10 role abilities you want.

It could even be the first job to not have any restrictions on gear (outside of job-specific gear), where the main stat of all equipped gear is automatically converted to that of the corresponding set of Role Abilities chosen. BLU abilities could alter as well (like WAR stances provide) so Mighty Guard could be featured as a tank stance with Tank Role Abilities equipped, and when DPS Role Abilities are equipped could be altered to be a self (or even party-wide) mitigation buff. Just have to follow the same rules that changing jobs have: not in battle and not in a duty.

Limiting to 2 roles could even lead to another job getting a dual-role treatment, allowing for two jobs to come out in the expansion with multiple role options. DNC could be a good partner candidate for this and could fill any of the 3 roles, really, but would likely go Healer/DPS to give a Tank, Healer and 2 DPS options with just 2 jobs added.

You realize Yoshi looks at the cost of resources to make such content, and then decides if its going to increase the number of subscriptions and expansion purchases, right?
Not if it increases the number of tanks by some small 1% or less.

Regardless of their lore and "learning" mechanic, the spells won't deviate much outside the current tool kit of their role. If they're casters, they will fundamentally have spells that are similar to BLM/SMN/RDM, e.g. direct damage, dot, procs, etc. The "learning" aspect will likely occur inside of job quests rather than in the open world (for obvious reasons) and involve "get hit with X attack Y times" or whatever. I doubt BLU will be a tank because the word MAGE is in their name and mages wear casting/healing gear and tanks wear fending gear. While not that set, i can already wear armor as a mage, as i have quite a few platemail armor sets. (some from 1.0, Dated gear can be applied to all jobs, including the Lv40-49 platemails from dungeons)

I hope Ceruleum Mage is our long-awaited gunblade tank job.

Tanks want another class but they also have to make it have a different appeal so others will try the role.

Is there some in-universe lore that states that armor of any kind stifles aetheric generation and conservation within a mortal vessel? If not, then there's no reason a mage *couldn't* wear heavy armor. And it would be no more stupid for them to wear all that junk than a tank.

I realized what I WOULD WANT. I personally hated FFX-2's Gun BlueMage so gun blade goign to a different job is niccee.. What I think would be interesting would be something like a "Mirror" Shield user.

Have the soul stone learn spells from viewing monsters in the "eye" of the mirror on your shield. Maybe make the design less bulky by allowing the shield to expand and retract, similar to AST Globes that flatten when put away.

Just imagine light holding up the shield in front of you as you channel a large spell (lol block disabled during hard spell casting) with the mirror shooting out the spell or radiating the buff up your arm to you or straight around you.

Its a very Magey weapon considering CNJ (WHITE Mage base) and THM (BLACK mage base) had shields originally.

Im all for a BLU tank. Fits wayyy too well on too many things!
