What makes a good mentor?

Hello everyone! I am a new mentor who just got the title yesterday after one year full of dungeon runs! But, there are no exact guidelines of how to mentor properly, so I'm going to create one based on everyone's feedback and hopefully help not only me, but also everyone else to become the good mentors in the FF community. Novice Network, Mentor Roulletes, and in general!

I wanted to hear your feedback for my own survey, mentors or not are welcome! Here are the things I want to hear, but feel free to add your thoughts as well.

• What makes a good mentor?
• Describe the do and don't as a mentor.
• Your experience with a good mentor and how he/she has helped you.
• Your experience with a bad mentor and how his/her advices doesn't help.

Oh, and one more thing. Don't discourage me from being a mentor, okay? I believe the world could always use more heroes! :)

In this 2nd post, I compile every good snippets I found on the internet and this thread, which has inspired me. Of course, you can make use of it too. I will update this as I go. :)

1. What makes a good teacher?

• Great teachers set high expectations for all students.
• Great teachers are prepared and organized.
• Great teachers engage students and get them to look at issues in a variety of ways.
• Great teachers form strong relationships with their students and show that they care about them as people.
• Great teachers are masters of their subject matter

A mentor is a teacher; a skill that can translate to becoming a real teacher. As such, I feel it's good to at least point this one out because this is applicable in FFXIV as a mentor.

2. A good example of respect

Generally speaking, I have only had one negative interaction with a Japanese player, which was still nowhere near as rude as the stuff I regularly see on here. 10 out of 10 times I am annoyed with other players, they turn out to be English speakers. Japanese players never spam /shout with meaningless shit, they take their personal conversations to /tell. Everyone is polite. You always start duty runs with a "Please look kindly on me" and end with a "Thank you for your hard work". I'm constantly amazed by how nice people remain even after wiping to a fight five times.

Just tonight, for instance, after our third Susano EX wipe, our tank goes "I have no face to show (i.e. I feel ashamed) for my shortcomings." And everyone else starts chiming in, "Oh no, the mechanics are really punishing, aren't they?" "Please don't take it to heart at all!" "If you start to stress out, it'll just get harder to do the mechanics." I've been in plenty of parties where multiple wipes happened, and not a single time has anyone insulted or called out another player. From what I see on this sub it looks like calling someone else shit, insulting their DPS, telling someone to fuck off or try to kick them isn't out of the ordinary at all. :/ I love playing with the JP community, so much so that I wish everyone else could experience what it's like having such a positive community too.

This is essentially the words "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu" and "Otsukaresama deshita" coming out of Japanese players, a simple greeting and a simple thank you or good job means a lot. Showing admittance for doing mistakes is also a good way to let everyone know that you're aware of your mistakes and wishes to forgive everyone for it. We even have a /grovel emote, which I think is an amazing emote.

1) Don't antagonize other players, especially sprouts. If they aren't performing well offer tips but don't insult them.
2) You're going to get asked a lot of "stupid" questions like "What's PotD", "What's LB mean", and "How do I unlock [job]"- while it's tempting to tell people to look it up and stop being lazy, it costs you nothing to answer the questions if you're just idling around anyway. If you can answer them, do it- and don't be a jerk about it.
3) Mentors should be held to a higher standard. Don't stoop to the level of trolls, flamers, and asshats. (i.e. Don't be a little b*** if things don't go your way, be the bigger person.)
4) Don't do Mentor Roulette unless you're prepared to get a synced EX primal and teach a lot of newbies how to do it via trial and error. And if you do get one don't leave right away- you're there to help after all.

This is an honest question from someone who got their status recently. What'm I suppose to do when the people I offer tips to don't respond or listen, and it's enough of an issue that it's causing the run to go realllly poorly. I'm sure nobody wants to be in a SB dungeon with only 1 dps, if at all, while the other presses their least damaging button repeatedly. I made attempts to communicate and help, but only met with silence, or just harsh reaction.

It's super frustrating, yeah. I can't count the times I've offered advice and been ignored or told "you don't pay my sub/leave me alone it's just DF stop being so serious". You can't make people care as much as you do, you can't make them want to improve themselves, and you most definitely can't play for them. So I just accept it as a bad run and try to move on. Of course I complain like crazy to my LS and Discord friends too... we've had some good laughs over terribad players over the years. I guess just don't take it personally. You'll probably never see them again anyway, you know?

• We must never antagonize anyone. Offer tips and tricks, set high hopes and expectations from them, but never insult them for their mistakes. Supportive is the key word :D
• We must never be a jerk when answering questions. We expect all sorts of questions as a mentor so don't whine if it comes your way and always be ready to help!
• Stand as a teacher / mentor should be. High standards and high quality goes a long way.
• Don't do Mentor Roulette unless we're ready to go trough trial and error.

I believe even the best mentors must be able to weather storms such as these, when we get hit right to our guts. Same goes for those bratty children as teachers. What matters is that our intention is good, and we should never stray from our values just because of them. If it really can't be helped... we just do what we can, contribute as much as possible... I know. It's a little painful. :(

Well you sound pretty pompous and condescending to me, but that's mostly a limitation of text-only communication. No question is actually stupid, but it can be frustrating to see people asking the same easily-researched question over and over again. Greg's NN had a fun time in Heavensward making jokes about how a drinking game with the rule "take a shot every time someone asks what Palace of the Dead is" would kill people. Questions people consider "stupid" are the ones that the player asking could easily find the answer to themselves. So if there's negativity in my statement it's all on how you interpreted it- I thought the quotation marks would have been a dead give-away. I guess add that to your list: your advice can be taken the wrong way if you aren't careful about how you word it. That's more of a life lesson though.

I think life lessons are also okay to me. It helps me mature, so don't fret!

So, that's what you meant by "stupid". Well... I do think it's stupid when someone doesn't know how to dodge a simple AoE telegraph in a level 70 dungeon... right? But, I don't believe that asking what POTD is, is a stupid question. I genuinely didn't know about POTD until I was introduced by my friends on my first few days in FFXIV, after all. I remember when I asked why Quarrymill was so crowded. :)

As still a sprout in FF, I'd pick out these points that are important for a mentor (in my opinion obviously):

- Patience. A lot of patience. And be calm. Most of time a person with the crown represents the whole community for a new player and your good and bad doings would be sometimes exaggerated and taken out of proportion. You did something nice -> a new player: "hey, FF is a great game and has an awesome community." You did something bad -> a new player: "Yeah, I knew everyone's a jerk here just like in *** game".
- Prepare a short one sentence explanations for the wiping or confusing boss mechanics in dungeons, it would add a lot of QoL and reduce a stress. Some new players do read guides before the start, other ask whether there's something to pay special attention but the most will just silently hope that everything will go well. No need in in-deep explanations but "all stay near the boss - it'll be easier to avoid a half-room AoE" or "blue mark - drop it near the wall" or "on *** ability don't look at the boss" are short and still very helpful. :)

Patience is very important. I teach a lot of Ex fights and sometimes it requires, step by step guidance. Which is why I usually tank because when it reaches a certain phase I can present what to do next. Or when we die to a certain mechanic. Instead of waiting for questions, because some people are genuine too shy to ask. I simply just say, so during that phase, a helpful tip is: or something along the lines of.

If people die to mechanics on Titan Ex for example and cannot reach past heart - I know that it may deter some players so I say it's okay. Really. Lets put up some marks and try to get that down. At least by the end, if we get that part down you know that you can tackle what comes after easier. I also try to put it out there lets try to aim for echo! Some people see this as a misconception as a form of insult but truthfully echo helps people who have certain connection problems. They can start surviving in weight of land and start actually participating and learning.

Sometimes we do not win. But I stay until the timer runs out. Because at least they have tried and learned. They stuck it out and didn't vote abandon meaning they really wanted to learn but never had anyone really stick around. So being that person or mentor I feel should be our role.

With this game, I have noticed that alot of mentors who try to help often word their advice in a condescending manner which makes the newcomer ask themselves if this person is making fun of them or not. In general I agree with what most have said in this thread, but for me the most important parts of being an mentor is:

1. Willingness to share skills, knowledge, and expertise.
2. Demonstrates a positive attitude and acts as a positive role model.
3. Provides guidance and constructive feedback.
4. Motivates others by setting a good example.

I agree. This is partially the reason why I'm opening this thread; to find a perfect balance. I want to find a way to become a mentor, yet not be a superior who judge on newbies and in turn, making them feel uncomfortable.

I would definitely call this my code of conduct. Truly, all I ever wanted is to set a good example as a mentor and be a positive person in any situation; the moment I wear this mentor cape on my name, I feel like I bear a big responsibility to every other mentors out there. :)

If I am worn out, tired, or getting mentally unstable, I can always take off the mantle anyway. That way I am never forced to be a full-time Mentor. Only when I want to. Thank you for your feedback! ^_^

This may sound harsh, but, if they both refuse to listen and get mouthy with you, either vote to kick them or leave. Obviously if they don't say anything to you at all in response then there could be a myriad of reasons. But if you were polite there's no reason for you to accept rudeness in return for your advice. Your time is just as valuable as theirs so no need to spend it with someone who isn't trying.

I'd like to emphasize, too, that attitude is FAR more important a trait in a mentor than aptitude. Even if you're TERRIBLE at the game, can't tank or heal, your DPS is in the gutter, break every craft, and haven't even managed to harvest an onion without being savaged by wild beasts - you can STILL be a positive force that helps new players to feel welcome to the game.

Keep an upbeat attitude and endless patience, and you'd be surprised at what folks can accomplish.

As a newbie sprout I really wish the mentors I met in game were more like you guys. I've only had two people bother to explain anything to me when I asked and one wasn't even a mentor.

Gonna have to disagree. You have no business teaching about something if you don't know what you're doing, good attitude or no. Obviously good attitude and good aptitude are ideal but I'd rather take the stoic, frigid teacher that is giving me accurate information over the smily cheerleader one that's hit or miss with their advice.

As a mentor I'd like to stress patience and attitude. How you come across will in turn affect the kind of response you get. You really have to want to be a mentor and have a want for people to become better players/more informed.

Another thing I'd like to stress is the fact that while mentors should be held to a higher standard, we're not perfect. There's times where I could not recall mechanics or exact name of skills to a fight because of not having done a fight in six months and I would say as much and be honest about it. Usually other players try to help explain or we all wing it and learn/remember on the fly. I think it's important to be humble in a place of leadership.

Third, not everyone is going to listen to your advice. If they have words, like someone else said, chalk up your losses and move on.

Dont be a dick.
Help those with questions if you can.
Boot drama starters from novice network.
Dont be a drama queen yourself either.
Give me 1 mill gil. Er wait. Uh nevermind.

Someone who doesn't mentor for the sake of being a mentor.

One who actually doesn't display the sword icon and can be helpful on their own terms.

I'm not going to derail this into a personal argument so I'll just say my bit and be done with it. I've been told I come across as aggressive when I think I'm being neutral and this is probably one of those times. If I come across as gruff then that's just how it is- but we all come across differently to different people. I've never ate a penalty to abandon a duty even if I hated every moment of it, I try to explain mechanics if people want me to (and never spoil it for people who want a blind first run), and even if I get frustrated I do my best to keep it civil and at worst just ignore the antagonists. Might not be the pinnacle of Mentor behavior but that's as good of a baseline as any I think. If I'm in NN I'll answer some questions too. I'd never be able to be a teacher IRL because they can't just ignore different people asking the same easily-researched questions over and over again, but as a Mentor I can let other people answer if I'm just burnt out from seeing "What's PotD?" for the tenth time in an hour... some people even make macros so they just hit a button to provide an explanation when one of those ultra common questions come up. We can rely on each other, which is nice. I don't think I'd want to be a Mentor if it meant being a lonely beacon for every newbie question under the sun- sometimes I just don't want to feed people answers any more.

To that end, if you're going to put the crown on you should be ready to help. If you aren't feeling particularly helpful, take it off. I've had mine off for the past few days since I've been stressed IRL and didn't feel like being under pressure to guide newbies and answer every question- I haven't been rude, disruptive, or deadweight- just quiet and willing to let them figure things out for themselves. I think a lot of people just put the crown on and leave it there no matter what kind of mood they're in which is how you hear horror stories of sproutlings being traumatized by the people who are supposed to be helping them. You should never be a jerk of course, but if you're not in the position to be a stellar example of the playerbase, then just turn it off. No one expects flawless play or knowledge about every single facet of the game from any one particular mentor, but they do expect to see a role-model for attitude and behaviour. If you can't bring yourself to be a cheerleader or a fount of wisdom then you should probably return to being a regular player for a while.

FWIW I think SE should consider revoking crowns for people who repeatedly set a bad example. It's impossible for them to preemptively vet who's suited for the role and who isn't personality-wise, but they can certainly revoke the status and access to the Mentor-specific awards if there are enough complaints about a person's behaviour.

The only time I display it(since I believe it's automatic...I have my name hidden on my end so don't see it anyways) is during Mentor Roulette.
I will always offer help if people ask(and I can type it faster than others) when asked, but if nobody asks, then I won't say anything because you never know if they want to run it blind or not. Only exception, is multiple wipes to the same thing.

Coldness is not the problem, it's impatience. Too many mentors give up on a group as "unteachable" FAR TOO SOON. A mentor needs to be supportive, never bail on a group regardless of how "hopeless" they might seem to be. A mentor who doesn't know the fight isn't going to be any worse than one that leaves outright after a wipe or two. At least, as long as they're aware of their lack of knowledge and doesn't try to pretend that they know it when they don't.

Mainly, I think a good mentor is somebody who knows when it's time to put on the crown and when to take it off. You don't queue into Mentor Roulette if you're not ready to offer explanations or be patient. You also don't let yourself get spoiled by easy guildhest runs, and then pitch a fit if you happen to get Shiva EX.

IMO the most important quality a mentor should have is letting people make mistakes. Given how most of us are veterans of the current content, it's easy to want to bombard sprouts with mechanics or tips as soon as you load in. Unless someone asks, though, you really should let them experience the mechanics on their own for the first time.

There was a Garuda EX run I had where the other healer ditched after 4-5 wipes. Everybody else (I think 5 others were new) stayed, and I did my best to explain where we were failing while waiting on a new healer. Everybody got their clear on the next pull, and I think seeing their excitement outweighed the frustration.

I have a mentor mount and let me tell you, this game has so much anti-mentor mechanics. You can explain the fight however you want, but you can not teach people to dodge landslides and not fall off in Titan Ex. You can not teach undergeared people to do high dps in strict dps checks in Urth's Gift when the boss casts Shin-Zanetsuken. You can not teach foreign players to understand basic English (ok, this one is Chaos DC specifics). So many times when you have little to no influence on result. Thanks god we didn't get Savage raids in mentor roulette, and adding trials like Ramuh Ex was a mistake already, they are not puggable, they are not clearable, it's a static difficulty content if it's not unsynched.

Long time mentor here (1.0 and alpha tester... I hit mentor status within a day or so of it being introduced.)

A good mentor pays attention to the party, watches and observes, and tries to help people figure stuff out on their own before intervening. Good mentors also immediately own up to their own mistakes, and laugh off mistakes in lower level content if someone oopsied and failed a mechanic (thinking of stuff like the Doom squares in baby Temple of Qarn.)

A bad mentor will not really make any attempt to teach or coach, but will yell at people for mistakes that seem obvious to a veteran but are still new to a sprout.

A good mentor seriously acts like they are an ambassador for the game, doing their best to present the helpful and friendly part of the community. Bad mentors almost seem to be willing to deliberately chase new players off.

I seriously love coaching a willing, brand new player through a dungeon or a fight. If I can show how much fun I'm having, I hope that it encourages the new people to stick around for a long time.

5.3k character message incoming

I must say, pre-SB, I did a mentor roulette where I had to kick one of the tanks. The reason being: They were warrior, and had not levelled gladiator up beyond 15 for the job stone, so didn't have Provoke. There were tank swap mechanics involved. We had about 7 attempts before we realised without them having provoke we were going nowhere with the fight.

I ended up initiating a vote kick, but before I did, I explained to level gladiator to 22 for provoke, since they will need this as a tank. That without it, people will rage at them, and they won't give them advice and support like I did. I felt so bad for vote kicking them, but there were other newbies wanting to progress. That being said, Stormblood fixes this bullhockey, since for the stuff where that'll be needed, you're given access to all your role skills, and you can swap them out for the fight as needed.

So I would add, have a basic rudimentary knowledge of all classes. You don't need to have top tier DPS with them all, but understand the basic gimmicks of the job (such as form shifting for MNK, mudra for NIN, ice/fire shifting for BLM, etc). Use this to help guide people to get their knowledge down of the job and help learn how to play it. For example, this will help with the fabled "ice mage" I hear about but have yet to see. Because Umbral Ice gives back mana, they understandably think to stay in that so they never run out of mana. Not the right way to play, but I can understand why they come to the deduction that they do. So I'd help them understand.

As a kinaesthetic learner myself, I do believe in letting people have at least one go at it blind. I'll say "Alright, let's give it a try, I'll cover any missed ground after". I believe that trying to do things blind (at least at first), is great, as it helps commit it to memory. But I might just be basing that off my learning style too much. Of course, if someone is really struggling, I'll watch their performance in more detail and help pick out their mistakes and how to learn from them. But I won't be condescending about it, I'll feed everything as suggestions in a "Have you tried this?" manner. I find they more often than not garner a positive response, because you're leaving them feeling in control.

I want to get Ramuh Ex in Mentor Roulette. I want stuff that challenges me. But I still would consider Ramuh Ex puggable. They were designed to be puggable. Savage and Coils however were considered the content for statics. Hence they don't appear in roulette. But I do feel they need to incentivise running those synced, though I digress here.

That being said:

• You can help make it easier for people to be aware of landslides and to move out of them (you can even use Rescue if needed to give them that extra nudge, as a healer).
• The high DPS check of Zanketsun-Shin... well the tanks can go into their DPS stance, healers can pump out DPS, etc. Since there's no damage to tank or heal, they can help push out the numbers. Sure, the DPS should be pushing their numbers, but at the same time, this can help even out the playing field a little. I do agree though, that the ilvl is too low for Urth's Fount. I think a bit like Gordias Savage, it was slightly overtuned.
• For foreign players, my stance is to use Bing Translate (where possible). Now if they're using a language where the character set isn't available in game (such as Arabic), then I'm at a loss. For those, I'll try my best, possibly set up a temporary Discord for it (which does support Arabic), and communicate stuff that way.

Yep. Even when the crown isn't on, I will try to be a force for good. It can be frustrating though when there's zero progress being made, and I think that's tied in to my Myers-Briggs personality type (Architect, aka INTJ). I do my best to work around it, but I also make sure I know my limitations. That being said, I will try to phrase things in a positive helpful manner. And I will psyche and rally people up to hit their own IRL limit break.
