Suggestions for a solution to a Glamour problem

As many are no doubt aware there has been multiple posting about issues with space for keeping glamours. However, this thread will address another issue: Unique gear. As it stands right now, if a particular best in slot gear piece is classified as Unique and that same piece is best in slot for more than 1 job then we can only glamour that piece for 1 of those jobs at a time, which means either only 1 job gets the glamour (if the glamour is for that job only) or you re-glamour the piece each time you change jobs. So I've thought up a few ideas that may fix this problem:

1) Give each job a base glamour not tied to their gear but to their gear slots. This way, if it is simply a matter of wanting the job to have 1 look you can use this feature to fulfill that without having to glamour the actual gear.
2) Allow gear for multiple jobs to have glamour for each job. For example; a piece for Monk and Samurai could have 2 glamours on it: one that only appears when changed to Monk and one when only changed to Samurai. The catch is the glamours would have to be for those jobs only, so it'd only work if you glamour on Monk-only stuff and Samurai-only stuff, otherwise they could both use the glamour anyway.
3) Simply remove the Unique classification, or alter it so that once spiritbond is 100% the Unique classification on that particular piece is nullified. I say spiritbond so that gear at 100% is good for more than converting :p


Feel free to post thoughts or additional solutions to this issue that can keep people from having multiple glamours with best in slot gear.

Well only way to address this is to know how programing is done behind this, because the Dev team makes it sound like a lot of proposed ideas has "server limitations". I suspect the easiest way is to let you buy a copy of whatever tomestone gear you obtained with gil to let you use the copy for a different job (like the calamity savager)

For the most part, I could see them either giving the schematics to crafters so they can make duplicate glamour gear without job restrictions (or stats), or simply releasing certain pieces of duplicate glamour gear as a PotD currency exchange.

Well I did read some posts on that and sadly I have to assume it is the case based what I read and people tell me. I really do not think they upgraded the NA servers, it was more for cheaper rates unless they are admitting the old servers were worse off then the ones in japan and EU, being at max overload for the basic needs. In either case for either theory we are still near minimum as far as server capacity, since they can't expand basic things like inventory. The place where it was moved to is questionable with the aims to save money only, when you have issues with slow servers and picky animation locks, and the fact you can damage stuff already dead. (Plus ixion crashing zones because 300 people are in it? server capacity feels like it exists out of the 1990s

...which just exasperates the current inventory issues.

Not to mentioned materia melding as well. DoW/M might be fine since each job more or less favor different stats, but what about DoH/L? Glamour overlay is still the way to go but it doesn't seems like we will be getting that anytime soon (or ever). /le sigh

This is one of those "it's not going to be easy but it should be done" issues.

That doesn't address the issue, though. Having WHM AF gear that's wearable by any job still wouldn't allow you to look like a WHM while you're a WHM and like an AST when you're an AST if they're sharing the same base gear. All it would do is make you look like a WHM all the time, regardless of what you are. The goal is to allow each job DIFFERENT glamour than the others, not another couple options for having them look alike.

I would like to see the introduction of a Glamour Log. You would have a set number of pages you could assign glam to then click on said page to apply it to your current class. What's more you could then use macro's to swap on demand.

Reading these threads always gives me a headache.

Suggested "Glamour fixes" look and sound easy to fix to those not familiar with how programing and databases work, but end up being much more complex/expensive when you understand how the backend works.
Currently the glamour system works by changing the current color/model data in the equipment's item data to a redirect the target equipment piece. This is very easy and low cost method to include glamour while still letting FFXIV have an incredibly huge amount of equipment models.

The OP's methods (and the other common suggestions) are far harder/more expensive than people understand.

1) This requires creation of 12 new gear slots (Weapon, Shield, Head, Chest, Hands, legs, feet, ears, neck, wrists, ring1 and ring 2) just for glamour. This would be the equivalent of adding 12 new inventory slots but locking them only to gear.

2) This would require adding 34+ redirect tags to every item slot and item and each new class/job would require adding a new redirect we added. This is a massive amount of dead/useless data on most items.

3) Glamour nuts do not need 3+ copies of endgame gear just for vanity.

For complete glamour freedom one would pretty well need:
- A glamour catalog (0/1 achievements, essentially -- have you ever soulbound this gear).
- Slot/AC-based glamouring (would require the data of one additional armory slot, sans all but model and dye).

A glamour log is still the best solution, as it's just a checklist of whether or not you have the ability to glamour the appearance of an item onto another item.

At which point its not just 12 slots it becomes 408 slots (12 slots for 34 classes/jobs).

13 normal gear slots and 12 glamour gear slots that are swapped out with gear sets are actually more sane that what you want but still very expensive

It becomes 408 tags, which are allotted for but need not be loaded until filled. The client can check internally as to whether a tag first exists in order to request it be loaded when swapping to the given job. (Admittedly, I'm unsure as to the necessary load differences of a tag being in its own module vs. part of another piece of gear's. Is every module of equal load regardless of size?)

This would not technically be a redirect tag any of on the gear itself; all gear-attached redirection would be removed by such a system. If an appearance tag is given on the slot, the gear's own appearance is superseded and ignored. Otherwise, the latter's appearance is loaded.

It's the best solution for a different issue.

There's two really big issues with glamour, and lots of requests for fixing each of them:
A) We can't collect more than a trivially few glamour appearances because the only way to do so is to store all the gear for them (with no place to do so).
B) We cannot have different glamour appearances while using the same base gear.

A glamour log is the fix to issue (A), but not to issue (B), which is the one this thread is about.

B isn't a huge issue if
1) The glamour-log cost is front-loaded and there's no longer a charge to actually apply glamour.
and
2) You can macro glamour changes.
A little unwieldy, but any other solution to B is going to be somewhat unintuitive (and potentially obnoxious if you don't want different glamour for each job; I use the same set for almost everything.)

You don't pay my sub! Don't tell me what I do or don't need.

All memes aside seriously if you don't care about glamour that's you but many of us, fanatics or not, would like to have a different look for a different occasion while still using BiS gear and not having to constantly change glamours. In my case, I want a different look per class/job.

Best fix as far as I can see is to:
1) Change gear sets to being stored on the server rather than our client (which really should happen anyway, regardless of this glamour change).
2) Then change glamour so that instead of applying it to a piece of gear, we apply it to a gear set.
3) And give each piece a simple selection (like the helmet show/hide toggle) of whether to display the glamour or the base item.
