A friend recently purchased the full game and is blind to the story. But the title screen is automatically Stormblood. I also recall buying Heavensward and though I'd finished the story, if one chooses to watch the FMV, heavy story spoilers.
Was this an oversight or was there no clear workaround? SB's FMV isn't too bad since if you don't know the lady in red, MNK of Light could be fighting anyone. But HW though...

IIRC, WoW does the same; it shows the latest expansion you have installed. It's not a bug/oversight.

I agree that it's annoying. I had a friend start in late HW and had to make him promise he would avoid letting the trailer autoplay while logging in. Somehow, he managed it and is now caught up. Other friends were less lucky during the ARR-HW transition.

Personally I just want the option to select which login screen I want, since I don't really like the SB one. A randomizer option would be cool, too.

The problem is how intense the spoilers are in the Expac CG's, so being able to keep it even with your avatar or simply choosing which start-up you want would resolve that.
One thing to note is PS4, if you suspend the game to watch Hulu/Youtube/ something, open the PSN store, basically anything, automatically starts on the CG upon reopening FFXIV, skipping the start screen entirely. -

If you start the game, then play it. Don't start the game and the go and do some random stuff. Simple. If you want to do some other random thing, then don't start the game or turn it off.
In ALL the games in existence, the opening cinematics have some amount of spoiler. Every single one of them. It is absolutely unavoidable to make cinematics for a game without adding a spoiler to it, though it is possible to make the spoiler less or more prevalent. Heck, this is the same with cartoons openings, so it's not game-related either.
And if you happen to end up on the cinematic?! Eh...turn it off?! If you don't want to be spoiled, you turn off the spoilers, right?! It takes what, one second?! In that one second you will not notice anything that would be a spoiler. There is a decently long introduction into what the song is, with nothing but a flag of Garlemard in the background. There is zero reason why anyone not wanting to be spoiled would be spoiled.
Though I agree it would be nice to be able to select the opening screen, there is no problem nor oversight to be talking about here at all. -

I mean, who, in case of an emergency, does even DO anything?! If I need to go to the toilet, I find a safe place and go to the toilet. Then I return to a game ready to play again. I started after HW and because I wasn't sure I'd enjoy the game I didn't buy HW until I cleared ARR... oh by didn't the HW video spoiled things for me. I can see why SB opening video seems to be mostly flashy and skills display centered than story points. :p

This is actually why the FMV they do show isn't nearly as spoilery as what was there for HW. The Revolutions trailer is incredibly spoilery but they didn't include that one or the official launch trailer. They learned from their oops with HW.
