Fishing: Alternatives to Cat Became Hungry

What used to be perhaps the best site on the internet for FFXIV fishing information is now packed with annoying video ads that force Firefox to scroll up, hiding what you wanted to see and stuffing the videos into your face. And if you ad-block, you get a dumbed-down and flakey mobile version.

The information on Cat became Hungry came from the FFXIV fishing community, and now it's being monetized in a most annoying fashion.

So, what's the alternative?

Personally i use ffxivdb.com

You can type the fish name you need and the comment sections have the coordinates and all the worthwhile info in there.

I use http://www.garlandtools.org/ffxivfisher/

It even takes consecutive weather requirements into account.

Unfortunately, Garland Tools just links to Cat Became Hungery if you want information on, for example, which bait catches which fish at each fishing hole.

xivdb.com usually works. Though sometimes it isn't always up to date for the latest, and some information is missing. Also, consolegameswiki too can work, but again, spotty and sporadic information in parts.

Would be nice, if they gave us an in-game way to know this stuff. They let Botanists and Miners know where everything is (except for unspoiled nodes) but yet FSH just get "???"s everywhere in their logs until they fish it the first time. Dunno why that is. And even after you fish something, the game STILL won't tell you what it bites on, or what it is mooched from.

Yeah, the SB google doc is great.. the bait percentages are what I like most about Cat Became Hungry. The website now kills my laptop (if it's on my lap, it immediately gets hot enough to be uncomfortable on my legs, and I have to close the tab within a minute or the videos freeze the browser. I know the percentages aren't 100% accurate, but it's better than nothing.. and the comments can be really helpful.

I'm not seeing these videos you're talking about in my firefox: I've got addblocker (but it's set to off for that site) and NoScript, allowing FF14Angler.com (only other things that show up there are some random google tracking things, which I leave off out of apathy). Are you sure you don't have some malware or something?

Yeah you have to add in Greasemonkey/Tapermonkey and add in a userscript

Then get Adblockers.

I went on Cat Became Hungry today, my favorite site or it was. You have to disable adblock and then it keeps scrolling back down automatically :(

Not if you do the what I outlined in the above post. Download Greasemonkey for Firefox or Tapermonkey for Google Chrome.
In TaperMonkey's Dashboard, just add the script I posted above.

I believe Greasemonkey is a bit more cumbersome (but it's really for your own good), that as a security feature it asks you to type something manually before you can copy the code into the box.

I use uBlock Origin on Chrome and click "Toggle Cosmetic Filtering for this site" Basically fixes everything wrong with the ads on that site.

I can't figure out how to do that.

I open filter preferences and can't seem to write anything anywhere even after adding "new filter group."

Use stands adblocker.
Best adblocker in the world IMO, haven't seen a single add yet.

And even if something would slip through, you have the option of rightclicking it and blocking the element (removing it from the site permanently for you).

That's all well and dandy but Adblock Plus is rubbish.

Like I said, download Stands and you're adfree for the rest of your life. No need for messy configuration, its simply just not there.

And even if it does pop up (which it doesn't on Cat Became Hungry), you can right-click and hide the element.

Seriously though. Adblock Plus is pure garbage.

"Add your own filters" does not show for me under options.

I only see "Show tabs on Flash and Java" and "Count filter hits."

popper blocker for chrome will block the ads without blocking ffanglers content.

use chrome and an add blocker.... There are multiple addblockers extensions out there... the one i use is Adblock plus uBlock just enable the "Parse and enforce cosmetic filters" by clicking the check box in "settings".

I am able to use the full website with no issues and no adds.... This means even though im using an addblocker it doesn't force me to switch to that app option with minimal search and functions. You just need to adjust the settings in your addblocker so you can use the site as normal.

I removed the adblock on that site and then just went through and blocked all the ads with noscript.

There's ways around their anti-adblock.

I went a step further and just edited my hosts folder, and now my computer doesn't even try to find any ads from a few sources. So even with ABP turned off, nothing comes up.

I'm glad this string was started. I loved http://en.ff14angler.com/ AND https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Main_Page, when I first started playing FFXIV. Now the ads are intolerable. http://garlandtools.org/ has become my new favorite. It is better than the other two sites, for the most part, and you can use it without ads. My biggest complaint with Garland Tools is that the fishing database could be improved by being able to easily access the suggested bait.

I like some of the suggestions in this thread, though, and will try them. You can never have too many resources with this game!

Do you have any suggestions on how to make GamerEscape.com work? How do you find the scripts to filter out?

And their site has somehow now managed to pick up if uBlock is active and will essentially shut down the site unless you use the mobile version...

Teamcraft has a fishing database with baits and weather and stuff.

You can search for fishing spots here, no idea if there is a better overview somewhere...

And even for unspoiled/legendary nodes you can see which zone it's on. If you're on the correct zone (anywhere on it) when the node is up, you get a nice pointer on your minimap towards the node. With a little bit of out-of-band knowledge (the active legendary nodes change every two Eorzean hours) it's possible to map out the nodes added in each patch within a single cycle. After you've gathered from a node once, you'll see a more accurate location and even the time(s) for the node.
