RDM 5.0 Wishlist! Just a few ideas =)

So I wrote this post a while back, and instead of writing a new thread I just updated this one since now that's its been SO SO long, I had some more time to enjoy Red Mage, and see some potential updates and or refinements that it could see. Of course I'm not in the helm of the director's chair in SE or anything, so my recommendations are just a wish list that I HOPE to see in the RDM's near future. Even if a single one of this is made to light I'll be a happy person.

Not saying RDM isn't perfect, because it's the sole reason I returned to FFXIV, and I've played it now through the course since Stormblood's release. I love the job and this is the reason why I made this post.


Red Mage is perfect, in its single target rotation. But I feel as though it has some areas to improve with its AoE rotation AND some new Raid Utilities.
So here’s my example of refining it:

Jolt II >> Impact II (Automatically changes, removing one button)

Acceleration (Becoming a Trait, rather than an ability – this also removing a button)

Remove Tether (Free up another ability slot)

Verholy / Verflare are assigned to an individual button and is dependent to player’s White / Black meter. *If Black is higher > Flare activates; if White is higher > Holy activates.
*Doing so will also remove an ability button
Embolden: Increase Duration by 10 seconds, Reduce Potency to 5%, to both Player and Members within range; remove the reduction%.

New Spells for 5.0
Enhanced Scatter II – Activates Verblizzard / Verwater
• Verblizzard – AoE Ice Damage to enemies within Range
• Verwater – Aoe Water Damage to enemies within Range

[One can only be used after Scatter II] Once the Verblizzard or Verwater is used, both deactivate.

Verwater / Verblizzard Potency is double the damage of Scatter II (125) >> (250)
Scatter II Enhanced isn’t 100%, but it’s close to it.

*Verflood / Verfreeze assigned to same button and changes depending on which “En” sword skill the player chooses. Verflood is an AoE, while Verfreeze is a single target.

New Abilities
• Chainspell [45s] – Grants Double to Triple Dualcast Effect at the expense of reducing Spell Managauge regeneration by half.
• Fencer [30s] – Channeling the Red Crystal, it Greatly Increases the Damage of the Next Enchanted Sword Ability at the expense of utilizing the entire gauge * Meter must be at least 40/40
• Equanimity – [15s / 45s] Meditating in the Red, the balance between White and Black become one, allowing all spells to equally increase the Manameter

Sword Abilities
• Enfire – Igniting the blade with Fire, the Red Mage delivers a threefold attack that may reduce the enemy’s attack; *when used with the Combo, the ability to cast Verfreeze initiates.
• Enstone – surrounding the blade with stones, the Red Mage delivers a threefold attack that may reduce the enemy’s defense *when used with the Combo, the ability to cast Verflood initiates.

Other stuff I sort of thought about but might push it to a “support” role
Haste – Decreases Party Member’s Recast Timers / Ability Timers by 10% [Uses 20 White Meter]
Temper – Increases Party Member’s Direct Hit Rate by 10% - [Uses 20 Black Meter]
Regain – Grants an MP / HP / TP regeneration at the expense of [50/50 meter]

-Alongside these buffs: have an ability called:

Composure: Doubles Duration of Next Enhancing Magic at the expense of Double the Cost of Mana and MP.

Now that we’ve had time to let the jobs and their roles marinate through the course of almost a year of its release we (at least I know I) am eager to see how it will evolve within the next course of months and or change with 5.0 if we end up getting a small hint of it or picture of our next adventure on the horizon.

By Chainspell, just bringing a classic twist to it, your chaining the spell with its opposite so it'll increase the potency of that spell by a certain %.
So if you do have a cycle sort of like: Verstone >> Verthunder it may trigger Chainspell.

Then do Verfire (if procs) >> Veraero
Dia / Bio are a good catalyst since they'll be quick casts, and it'll be a fun throwback to some of RDMs classic moves, at least from FFXI.

Death Blossom would replace the AOE moulinet, as a new AOE for combo to proc: Verfreeze / Verflood which would both be AOE but having half the potency of their single target counterparts.

Myself i currently like Red Mage as it is but i will say i agree with tether. Perhaps it has it's situational use but i have yet to come across it.
Acceleration, is a big must keep in my opinion.

Some have talked about Verblizzard but honestly if we start adding more spells like such it kind of takes away from blm a bit as it is ice, fire, thunder and Red Mage would possibly be too OP depending on how they would go about it.
I would instead rather Red Mage gets it's own unique spells or maybe a mix of elements spell and dots would be great to have in the future.

Death Blossom is already in use. :-P (Ninja AoE)

I don't think we need Scatter II. I think Verblizzard and Verwater for AOEs is more than enough. Verflood/Verfreeze seem fine as finisher options for the usual enchanted melee chain, though I would worry about ability bloat.

I'm not sure about Dia and Bio. RDM has so much mobility that it doesn't -need- DoTs. Giving them DoTs feels like it'd make them a bit too powerful.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing two new abilities that introduce a stance effect. En-Astral and En-Umbral. They can increase the damage of white/black magic spells or just the mana generation. Or add debuffs to enemies when using the enchanted melee chain. En-Umbral applying a slashing resistance down debuff. En-Astral reducing damage the enemy deals. Something of that nature, more utility than anything part of a rotation.

I just feel like RDM's rotation is perfect as is, and I would rather RDM received more utility/OGCD abilities. Maybe a defensive one like Phalanx.

Phalanx would be fun to see! And it could be a spell that you can apply to a tank that increase physical resistance, sort of like a Bole for AST!

Yeah my perspective in what I wrote was something along the lines of an AOE rotation for RDM rather than scatter spam, that was my intention with making the other ancient spells be Area of effect.
Cause I don't want to break the current cycle of spells, but add in a rotation for trash mobs since tanks love to train enemies like mad!

Give RDM a way to increase mana meter fast by doing an AOE rotation cycle.

I agree AoE needs a better rotation cycle since scatter spam makes me want to just make a 30 second macro to just spam it so I can go get something to eat, but I'd rather we didn't have DoTs, as Vexander said our mobility is high enough that we don't really need them. As far as an AoE finisher, I imagine what they'll do is give us a trait that makes Enchanted Moulinet give a stack and once you have 3 stacks you can use Verflood/Quake/Tornado/Freeze etc. etc. (Personally i'd like Flood since there's literally no water magic in the game usable by players and it's irking me).

What they'll probably do in 5.0 is give us another Jolt upgrade and either a Verfire/Stone II or a Verthunder/Aero II trait alongside some utility abilities or hopefully, more meaningful AoE.

Enchanted Moulinet upgrades to 'Death Blossom' after expending 60 white /black mana
'Death Blossom' enables VerFlare/ VerHoly as an AOE with 40% reduced potency.

Abilities
Refresh: 35 White Mana. Grant yourself and a party member resource regeneration. Shares CD with Berserk.
Berserk: 35 Black Mana. Grant yourself and a party member increased damage and resource consumption. Shares CD with Refresh.

Put into as few words as possible, more sword use.

I like the aoe rotation idea, scatter spam is pretty baf. I also agree with dots being way too much. I like moullinet though, so hmmm.

realistically i could see them maybe making jolt turn to impact as a trait. As far as what else they could/would probably do for rdm its hard to tell.
I see tether getting removed - I dunno about the rest of you but i deleted it off the hotbar as soon as i saw the tool tip

For :ease of use theyd probably merge verflare/verholy
that would open up 2-3 more slots from button bloat, though if pvp is any indicator of how much they could do well you all know.
I see a flat upgrade to the ver spells having a 2 version with a trait, theres your level 80 RDM, only missing vercure 2 and we all know that aint happening

I'd personally like an adjustment to our melee combo, to have each enchanted hit grant dualcast and not break the combo, so we could melee, free cast a spell, and continue the combo into our finisher. I'd also like the option of a finisher that gives an impact proc, so maybe Explosion or whatever they would call it, which is just the Verholy version of that spell, that could either give matching mana, maybe 10 of each, or that gives some other benefit like a magic vuln up for 15 seconds. Moulinet should have a 2nd part to its combo which costs 20 white and black ideally.
