what should be the next tank job in your guys opinion either based on existing job in FF universe or maybe just based of a type of mechanic for the tank or theme
I would say rune fencer like in FF11 but that is kind of similar to dark knight so they probably won't do that.
I like the idea of a tank that has counter mechanics, the more damage it takes the more it deals. The Job would be performing its best during Tank Busters and Healer Checks. A aoe Cover like skill, OT wouldn't be in a position to take much damage, so would have a skill that transfers a portion of party damage to themselves, to maintain deeps. Not sure on weapon though? Barefists comes to mind, but that's synonymous to MNK.
Well it's not like there's a lot of other remaining jobs that exist in the FF universe that they could even use as a new Tank Job. Though some people like to imagine the idea of Beastmaster or Blue Mage as a Tank. But it's entirely possible the next new Jobs won't have any connection with other jobs that exist in the FF universe. Since I do recall having read somewhere before that in the future Yoshi-P wants to create unique new Jobs exclusive to FFXIV that haven't been done before in the FF universe.
Holy Knight
well, dark knight was the counter tank, but they removed that with 4.0 :\
blood price > get hit > get mana > use more dark arts
get hit > parry > use reprisal for extra damage and mitigation
get hit > parry > procc low blow > extra damage + stun
and i had hopes DRK will get even more counter mechanics with 4.0...
Yeah shame that. DRK was the first tank I leveled. Haven't tried it 4.0, yet. I remember there was a skill that was counter productive though. It increased Evasion or inflicted Blind, but is was better to Parry attacks due to Blood Price. iirc. Dark Passenger? You can tell I haven't played it a while :)
BLUE MAGE. I don't want another sword-like class please give me something new and I don't want the same old physical melee, war, drk, pld copy gives us something new MAGIC BASE TANK BLUE MAGE.
Personally I would love to see SE make a Tank that uses a Gunlance. Basically something like the Gunlance weapon in the Monster Hunter series for anyone familiar with it. It's a very large and heavy close range weapon that can also fire off an explosive close range blast as you can see in the second picture below. Paired with the shield it really gives off a Tank-like feel.

Beastmaster as a tank.
PuppetmasterMammeteer as a healer.
Heck a Gunlance wielding Tank feels like it could maybe even possibly give the folks asking for a Gunblade wielding Job something similar to what they're looking for. Since there was no real chance of them giving us an actual Gunblade Job given the existence of MCH's covering the gun wielding aspect and the recent addition of RDM's covering the niche of a hybrid Ranged DPS with some melee mixed in.
A tank that uses a bazooka
Blue Mage.
Yes, Blue Mage.
Definitely Blue Mage.
Gunblade might be interesting, but I actually want a tank that wields a massive cannon. A bit tired of all the sword and magic.
Rocket Hammer and a Shield... Or any magitek blunt wep and a bigass shield, like a full tower shield not some tiny kite shield. Im cool with 2 bigass shields too, but seriously blunt weapon, itll passively buff monks utility while they're at it. Rhitahtyn and Grynewaht weps (just gag Grynewaht, no one wants to hear him speak). Gunlance could be fun, but DRGs dont need another passive utility buff since gunlan e would likely be peircing, and we definitely dont need another slash job.
Legionaire/Dancer 5.0 both blunt weapons.
I know this isn't the place really, but I also REALLY want a Necromancer melee pet job that wields a scythe. It would be the inverse basically of RDM in that it had melee combos to build up heavy hitting magic attacks.
Would ideally want a skeleton pet, but I fear they'd be opposed to that because of the Chinese client.
Beastmaster. It was practically a tank job before.
Surely folks asking for Beastmaster must know that even if they did ever implement such a Job it would be in name only. It wouldn't play a darn thing like Beastmasters in past FF titles. You wouldn't be getting to tame monsters to act as your pets in battle. Even if it had pets they would just be a very fixed small selection similar to Summoners with probably zero chance of glamours for them upon release. That and the fact that they can't seem to make pets with good AIs would probably make having one for a Tank Job pretty out of the question. So if they were to implement a Job called "Beastmaster" it probably wouldn't have an actual pet and would just maybe have monsters appear suddenly during attack animations before disappearing.
I think the closest to that in FFXIV would be this dude from cape westwind.

I would love to see another tank have blocking in their tool kit so then we would have two tank who can block instead of one. They could also give BLU a shield but that seems boring to me. This guy seems way more interesting a concept for a tank and the assets are already in-game.
Well, I could see bluemage as a tank, since its gimmick is being hit by enemies. So make jobquests in a way that a player tracks and provokes a monster to get hit and learn its skill, and give a nice emphasis on parry and counter, kind of like what DRK currently has going with TBN. (Also, wouldnt it would be cool to be able to glamour 2 different scimitars?)
Alternatively, judge Gabranth from FFXII has cool weapons and, in dissidia, a cool toolkit, that I could see working on FF. Combine the weapons in tankstance, and seperate them in DPS stance, and then dance away.
Samurai, Blue Mage, Templar.
Pppprrrobabbly in that order of priority that I'd like. Probably.
Gunlance tank sounds so much epic.
Evasion tank! it would be totally balanced tank :^)
Mystic Knight/Temple Knight (from FFT) [Debuffer/barrier]
Noctis [gunblade/warpstrikes/phasing) [somewhat evasion and mobility]
Something with a mace or blunt damage
blue mage maybe
You say that as if SE's options when it comes to creating a new Tank Job is somehow limited to assets already in-game. Yet that's never stopped them in the past from creating other new Jobs that don't use any current pre-existing assets. So it's not like Gunlances similar to what I described/showed on page 1 would be out of the question.
Magitek Armour pilot? The class itself is wimpy, but you get a suit of armour that does all the tanking.
Sadly, most of my experience with FF jobs comes from Bravely Default, so the best I can think of that we don't already have is Vampire.
I think the biggest challenge will be to make a tank class that feels truly unique without replicating or just borrowing heavily from one of the existing classes. I feel that Templar might be an option (perhaps with a one-hand lance and shield), but it would probably end up feeling very similar to PLD in terms of mitigation with just a lance instead of a sword.
Personally I would really like to see a squishy magic-based tank that relies on magic shields to improve mitigation. For this class MP could be used to mitigate damage rather than HP.
For example the tank has 15k HP and 30K MP. Any damage that goes through the MP shield could be mitigated by say 20%. A tank buster that does 40K dmg would then deal mitigated damage until MP is gone where the rest of the damage would reduce HP.
The class would need some way of converting healing from healers into MP rather than HP. Damage skills would mostly be TP based but could also have some MP based specialized moves to add the mechanic of balancing damage output with survivability. Would be interesting but difficult to implement properly.
Could also see them implement a tank class that relies much more heavily on self-healing. Though if not carefully implemented this could become OP.
Geomancer could be designed for tanking. Could use elemental magic to shield themselves. Also they could bring in a weapon they don't have in game yet, Hammers
Chemist would make a great healing class. Could use consumable potions with CD's to boost effects. Weapons would be guns of course. (Tactics fan here)
Dancer could be designed as a close range support dps class. Similar to Bards but their 'dances' would reduce enemies resists/damage. Whips would be the only weapon of choice here.
SE can't handle 3 much less four. Instead of adding new jobs they should branch off current ones. Like Paladin into Holy Knight and SCH into Time Mage for instance. It might not even be possible with engine/server limitations but it would be pretty cool.
no new tank job, look at all the posts about the current 3 tanks, can you imagine 4
From a practical standpoint, something that shares armor with Dragoon or Ninja and then uses a trait to make up for lost defense makes sense. Perhaps something like Dissidia's Firion, where their weapon type is an "arsenal" that consists of an axe, a short bow, a shortsword, etc. and they switch between them for different attacks.
simple answer;
BLU
BST
more detailed answer;
Any aesthetic can be made into a tank.
FF jobs are more aesthetic than actual job mechanics, and complex rotations are only really ever used in MMOs.
So what ever job is picked, is being picked aestheticly, rather than for its complex mechanics and playstyle.
I'd like to see a Disciple of Magic tank.
I'd like to see a tank outside of the usual fending gear.
I'd like to see a pet tank.
I'd like to see a tank that uses their gauge to lower dmg directly, rather than to pop a CD.
If BLU is ever added, I'd like it to have some melee, and ranged offensive, defensive, and supportive spells, sort of like RDM. (Though RDM gained no buff spells, just buff/debuff abilities)
If BST is ever added, I wouldnt mind too much which role it is, but we already have the "pet DPS" and the "pet healer" (the second being a more rare type of healer in MMOs.)
In short, I feel BLU better fits the tank role for a DoM job.
You can copy RDM and make it alternate between melee and magic, while having heals that take up the GCD, but in doing so, you get the same problem RDM has, which is that you dont actually use those heals in hard content, because you have to keep your DPS up.
You can copy WHM and give it typical healer DPS spells, and then have healer/buff spells, but this pretty much takes away from their melee options, even more so giving a combo that prevents them from casting heals for too long.
But if you make them a tank, they can melee as much as they want. They can waste GCDs on heals if they are tied to AoE threat, like Flash, doing no dmg, but raising threat. Because you'll just go into your DPS spells once you've established threat. They can also have ranged spells, like holy spirit, unmend, abyssal drain, because it doesnt break tanks. (Honestly dont feel holy spirit should have been given to PLD, as its a better mechanic for a melee mage, than a PLD)
Id give BLU a 0.5s cast time when in tank stance, and a full 2s cast time in DPS stance.
To separate it from unmend/abyssal drain.
Lastly, I'd use their Damage MP skill from Tactics, as that made them unkillable.
For BST, the easiest way to make it with the current system is to make the actual player the tank, and not the pet.
Of course that would be lame, and no one wants this.
But with the way pet AI works, some adjustments need to be made.
The pet needs to have a MASSIVE speed increase, so as to handle mechanics better.
The delay between activation of movements, and the actual movement is too slow, which is what requires a near instant transition.
Because of boss AoEs, and the need to move yourself and the pet at the same time, I would suggest AoEs are instead handled by you, and therefor any AoE dmg you take, goes to the pet, but any AoE dmg the pet is standing in, it takes no dmg.
A healer can heal the pet, but if they heal you instead, the same amount of healing gets transferred to the pet, but something liek 20% of the heal doesnt heal you,a nd instead that extra 20% gets added onto what the pet gets healed for. (sort of acting like defiance, except 2 people are healed.)
I wouldn't mind seeing a magical based tank of some sort, given all the closest thing we have is DRK. I'm not sure how it would work though
Blue Mage or Beastmaster, as has been said over and over.
I do think a Beastmaster would not use the pet to tank, though, but instead it would use it to deliver his half his DPS while he tanks, with a Tanking pet that absorbs 20% of your damage, and a DPS pet that does more damage.
The Blue Mage is a curious case, this game is too static to allow for it's mechanic to flourish under the normal skeleton of the game. I am guessing that a BLU may be able to learn tons of abilities but would get their own Blue Magic tab bellow their Job action sheet, similar to the Cross Role screen, they would only be able to slot 5 at a time (these would be level locked.) Your core 5 Blue Magic abilities learned via job quests, but the rest may be done via something like your hunt log.
I would love if either of these was to carry a big hammer or a bo staff. It's time we get a non-slashing tank.
But to be more original, while keeping to FF series? How about the Viking?
- It would wield hammers and have a reliance on Thunder elemental magic.
- They would wield shields (share existing shields with Paladins.)
- They would have inherently no Tank Stance. They would live in tanking stance all the time. They would have a trait at 30 that increases agro generation, their HP by 12.5%, healing recovered by magic by 10% and reduces all damage taken by 10%. Would always be on.
- Give them access to Enthunder, an ability that adds X% lightning damage procs to every attack, and boosts lightning elemental magic by X%, but also adds a self-vulnerability that increases all damage taken by 20% and reduces [negates trait] enmity generation.
- Their Gauge could be called War Cry gage and increases every time thunder magic is used. Their spenders would all be focused on group buffing, all would be large AoEs centered around the caster. Things like increased damage, damage absorption or enemy debuffs like lowering damage output. Overall goal, a bit less utility than a Paladin.
They also would be ideal for an expansion that focus on a Norse-like region.
I don't know any specific ones but I imagine a caster-type would be pretty awesome. Just imagining this battle-wizard stopping blows and attacks with magical shielding and the like
a magitek tank, and given the story of 4.0, i bet 5.0 will have us make an alliance with the empire so that magitek job might be the "story job" like dragoon in 3.0 and monk in 4.0.
I've always wanted an evasion tank; I loved playing an evasion tank as THF in FFXI, but I understand how that would be tricky. SECOND choice would be a "lifesteal/drain" tank. Their base mitigation is in their draining attacks... sort of like how DRK should be... haha. I love Scythes and was really hopeful that DRK would be Scythe/Drain based... if we could somehow get that in a different package, I would be SOOO happy.
