Two/three dyes on one piece of gear

Please give us two (ideally three) dye options, specifically for gear that natively consist of two different colours.

Currently when dying a LOT of the gear in this game, the default colours look better.
Not because of the colour choices of the dev team, but due to their freedom of making two parts of the gear, different colours.

I am going to give an example of the issue.

In the image above, you will see that the left (default) contains a brown, a red, an aqua and a black colour palette.

The right (dyed) contains black and blue, with the sash also changing to a light blue.

The glamour system for gear would be improved greatly if we had a primary colour, and one or two additional secondary colour options.

A glamour system akin to that of Guildwars 2 would be fantastic, however at this point I think that is a pipe dream.

Final note - if it is far too much work to edit gear currently in the game to allow for multiple dyes - then please at least design gear in the future to allow for this.

While I would absolutely love more flexibility with colour palettes, our glamour system isn't even robust enough to allow for more than one copy-- making all the wonderful AF gear borderline useless. Unfortunately, the devs seem to be prioritizing things like possibly Blitzball over changing that. So I doubt anything comes of it.

I know they've mentioned that their glamour system is woefully underdeveloped and would require starting from scratch to fix the issues, but I think they've also said the same for their dye system. I can't recall where I saw it, but I'm pretty sure I saw that. So, I don't think it'll happen as they don't wanna tear it down and start again... might well just be a 1.0 relic...

Off topic but... oh man oh man oh man, someone who agrees with me that Omega doesn't feel like a raid. I mentioned it in a FFXIV related Discord and got told "Well who cares about trash? Savage never had it anyway" - but yeah, Omega doesn't feel like a raid to me. Just a trial. Return to Ivalice will likely feel like a raid though. I always found the 24-man duties were nailed as raids go. Why can't the 8-man raids be the same? Why classify them as raids if they're just trials? Drives me up the nut...

They stated in a interview long ago that the dye system we have was unplaced because some colors did not shade well under certain lighting and that the gear they created would still be identified by what they originally designed.

I sense a bit of sarcasm in there, and I did chuckle at the Blitzball comment.

If they can't design proper raids (not just embellished trials), or horizontal gear options over and above raid/tome gear, then I will bite on the more casual content.
At the end of the day, glamour is the true end-game of this game isn't it?

This excuse is simply a cop-out in all honesty. Just like many comments such as server stress, console limitations, etc etc. It's their way of saying "we don't want to invest the resources into doing xxx".

You can dye the body piece that I used as an example, a metallic colour if you really want, which looks completely eye-sore on a lot of cloth pieces, regardless of the lighting.
If this was their true reason for not adding multiple dyes, then they might as well start removing options for certain colours for certain pieces.

Don't mean to derail the topic but I can't really blame SE for this entirely.
They tried to do it in BCoB, but a bunch of people complained that the trash was pointless, and that turn 3 was a waste of time. So the people that said that are partially to blame..

However something I can blame SE for, is that said trash was indeed trash, and had no use. Which is what most people complained about back then in the first place.
If they gave the trash in BCoB Turn 1 & 3 a purpose, then it wouldn't have been an issue.

Let this trash have a low drop rate for other aetherial gear (such as what you get in Diadem) at 10-iLvls lower than raid or tome gear or something.. That would be a huge step forward for this game in my eyes, to open up the potential for people to gear up multiple roles. Hell, this may even cause people that don't raid to want to actually try the first turn - even if it's just for the trash mobs.

this would be so nice. I have so many pieces of gear that would be perfect.. if only i could change the secondary color. Either that or the "main" dye affects the straps and not the cloth..

I believe that they actually mentioned this at EU Fan Fest. I may mangle this explanation as it's from memory but the system is set up so each gear piece only has one dye flag, and to add multiples would strain the system (as well as requiring previous gear to be adjusted). Was this the question where he asked us to wait for PS5? The usual story. Yoshida sounded as though he'd like to be able to implement it, though.

Another compromise I'd accept would be to have multiple versions of gear glamourable independent of job, e.g. the pretty navy/green version of the Gubal set rather than the dull brown version, as for dyeable gear this would have the same effect as letting us dye multiple parts of a piece in a more limited way. Something for the glamour log wishlist.

Since my character has grey skin, a lot of pieces have dark grey shirts or highlights which disappear from a distance and ruin the look. And why do so many pieces have brown highlights lately? I don't like brown clothes :(

I remember reading somewhere the way the dye system currently works is that it changes not the texture of the model, but the model itself to a different model with different texture.

This requires creating 123 different models for each piece of armor as there is 123 differnet dyes. It seems like a bandaid fix for the request for dyes as it wasnt in 1.0 and would have required a major overhaul of how items work. Adding another dye channel to this system would require not 123 models but 15129 models.

One thing the dye system piss me a lot is the fact that some cloths lose some texture when we dye them.

Taking the Chinese dress as example, it has lovely texture with it's default color. But when you change, the dress become more simple.

That sounds like an extremely stupid way to handle this feature on a development level. If this is even remotely the case, then they absolutely need to redesign the feature from the ground up. If for no other reason but to future-proof their game.

If this is true, they would effectively have to modify every piece of armor in the game, every time they wanted to add a new dye. In which case they have already done this, when they introduced Pure White, Jet Black and the list of metallic dyes they added in not-so-recent patches over time.

I don't know 2 cents about programming but this seems to me like a complete arse-around way of doing this. I am sure there are more efficient ways to do such a simple thing. Other MMOs do this quite easily...

The glamour system needs SO many updates. :(

Another thing - let us start being able to dye most, if not all, gear. Would open up the glamour end-game quite a lot. It irks me to no end that a lot of dungeon gear or other drops aren't dyeable, and they use custom colors that we have no access to. Makes trying to match other pieces a bit difficult at times.

Just a touch. Unfortunately, I do recall Yoshida being asked about more glamour options since AF is job specific only and his response was claiming they could work on it but that it wasn't a high priority. I mock Blitzball because they have brought it up more than once and it seems inevitable we'll get that... which I suspect will die within a week or two. Glamour stuff like what you proposed or being able to slot multiple options would be far better.

Lol if this is true... holy crap. Every new thing I hear about how SE designs is just yet more evidence in the basket of they have no idea how to design efficiently...

On a serious note, I've wanted this, it just seems its not happening. They say that they would have to rework the whole system, and postponing this feature is making that work bigger with more gear they add. So I'm guessing they are just not doing this at all, ever.

Well if it wasn't for the fact that the game is quite clearly poorly coded it probably would be possible for things like having more than a single dye on a piece of gear. I mean sure it's coded worlds better than the mess called 1.0 ever was, but it's still pretty limiting it seems. Given that asking SE for things that are just basic features in even older F2P trash MMORPGs are constantly met with the same old bullcrap "limitations" excuses. Would be nice if they would stop hiding behind that excuse all the time and just admit it's their poor coding that's preventing it from being a thing rather than server or console "limitations".

Since there's no way I'm going to believe FFXIV somehow can't implement the ability to apply 2-3 dyes to a piece of gear when F2P ultra poorly coded trash like Mabinogi which has been out for 9 years longer can somehow handle being able to dye 3 different parts of a gear piece just fine! Heck to make matters look even worse Mabinogi even has FLASHY dyes that flash between several different colors. So if a game like that can handle having a gear piece dyed with flashy dyes that cycle between a bunch of different colors on 3 different spots per gear just fine then I'm sure FFXIV should be able to handle more dyable spots.
