With every class able to cast a spell that 100+ MP a cast, should Ether's finally be updated to reflect the larger cast costs + MP pools? Perhaps just new and different tiers of Ethers are needed instead. Thoughts?

give me hi-ether please~ or x-ether~!
MAKE ALC USEFUL :C
Potions/Ethers in the game right now are a joke, they need a serious re-vamp. Hoping that the recipe changes in 1.21 make them useful
they should be useful. That's why they're revamping along with CUL foods. 1.21
I want to put potions and ethers in my action bar, and they should boost their potency while they implement that ^^
I think that the current hp/mp pots are alright for low level play. what were lacking is viable mid to high level alternatives.
The real problem is the medication effect.
it'd be cool to make them useful and part of every day use.
110% agree! Potions are worthless after level 30, and foods are way too bulky to craft. Why have a recipe that requires 8 items for a low rank food, that should be reserved for high rank foods that scale stats considerably
Yep, ethers should be updated.
With even maybe MP given depending on character lv like spells.
And/Or
Doing something with the "medicated" status, the cooldown is really big.
best thing to do about em, remove the friggin "wow-clone" ceffect of cooldown on potions and ethers! a ff game dont need such crap, a ff game is often so challenging you HAVE to use a couple of potions and ethers per enemy sometimes, somethimes 5 and 20 even.
and if we cant get this as normal players, please make a chemist class that can.
Yes please, bring back the tiers :)
No they aren't, if I could spam ethers I definitely would. It would be ridiculously overpowered, obviously the better solution is to either give us a better version of the current ether/potion or else have it scale to our level.
If we could spam it then of course they would need to keep it weak or else risk trivializing the bulk of gameplay. It would just come down to how many potions/ethers you need to beat X.
the standard ethers were not even good at launch, they ave always been junk. now more so then ever.
Very simple fix, cast time increased. No cool down. Fine, make each ether used stack, add 2-3 seconds for each subsequent use per battle. I can agree that a macro to burn through 10 ethers in five seconds would be a bad thing (even if a high tier spell would use every bit of the regained MP)
i think 5 minutes for potions and ethers is stupid high. especially for the trivial amount it gives back.
As an alchemist who quit leveling when she saw there was nothing worth leveling it for, and as a mage who occasionally has an "oh crap, no mp" moment, yes, please make alchemy useful and potions and ethers worth using. Final Fantasy games usually have several medicines with differing potency and I want to see it in this game too.
they should be updated, and should also stack to 99
Ether > Ether+1, Ether+2, Ether+3 > 100 - 320 MP recovery
Hi Either +1 -3 > 320 - 500 MP recovery
Pro-Ether + 1 -3 > 400 - 620 MP recovery
Elixir +1 -3 > 200 HP and MP recovery - 500 HP and MP recovery
Hi-Elixir+1-3 > 500 HP and MP recovery - 1500 HP and MP recovery
Max Ether +1-3 > 1000 - 2500 MP recovery.
Quite easy to make these very useful, as well as removing the cool down. FFs have always been about item use until you get spells that handles what you need to do for recovery, even then ethers have always been integral in harder fights.
Hi Keftenk,
Good point. With basic Cures and other spells being so expensive to cast, Ethers (and the item reuse lockout timer) makes them pretty ineffective for high level play.
I'd also chime in that +MP (Manathirst) Materia need to be updated also. Getting only~ +20 MP or +30 MP isn't going to help very much now that MP Costs have skyrocketed.
I think Ethers have a ridiculous cool down timer on them as well, for 50MP....
Over in the Alchemy forums we had a similar discussion — Alchemy Reform — talking not just about ethers but potions, poision and alchemy recipes in general.
Hopefully when the reformed Alchemy recipes come out (in 1.21 maybe?) ethers and potions will scale with our level, recovering a more reasonable amount to become actually useful. I'd like to avoid the need to create different variants of MP and HP recovery medicine (Ethers, Hi-Ethers, Hyper Ether, Max Ethers, etc.) they'd probably do it so they could make the ingredients for higher level medicine increasingly harder and harder to obtain.
I have no problem with a cooldown timer, but I'd prefer it to be something more reasonable, along the same lines as Second Wind. (And in that it recovers an amount equal of HP or MP as well.) A 45 secs cooldown with both ethers and potions have their separate timers seems reasonable. (No idea if they both currently share the same cooldown timer.) Though, perhaps the timer should be lower to balance things out. Second Wind is a limitless ability and only requires very little TP to use whereas ethers and potions are limited and cost gil to buy (or time to make).
Really the most annoying part about culinarian is that everything takes a large amount of materials for you to make... a single item. Food goes away when you die and you'd want to use it the most in a tough fight so its a lot of time crafting just to provide yourself/others with enough to last for any period of time.
Hello ether thread! I just wanted to stop by in here and let you know that we forwarded your requests regarding ethers to the dev. team and while we can't say too much regarding specifics, they wanted us to remind you that medicine effects (and their recipes) will be revamped in 1.21.
I'd rather they ditched raise being equipped by everyone and have phoenix downs for that purpose (with a long use time, limited uses per battle and relatively expensive requirements to purchase from NPCs so there's a market for the consumable).
Personal opinion, of course.
Potions and ethers are great, when you're like...level 20. Their cooldown currently is pretty high for their return for someone at max level. At low level, they're nice to have handy, though. I don't feel like potions and ethers currently are made to be chugged by a high level player, though. I think Hi-Ether's/Potions would be nice in the future, and plain old potions could stay fairly weak, giving tiers to ethers/potions for players as they advance in levels. But...can we have them with traditional 'Final Fantasy' names, instead of how we have 'Blood Drops' instead of 'Antidote'?
I feel kinda bad that the dev's keep having to reitterate that cooking, alchemy, and goldsmith will get their updates. Just not until 1.21.
I'm interested to see how cooking and alchemy change with 1.21!
I actually would love to see an item based class like one in tactics. Also, on a sort of similar note, I think it would be sweet if they created a throwing class.
This is interesting. That is all ^____^
