Just a vent

I am so ticked off right now. I bought the physical copy of stormblood because my internet is very bad.
when I went to install, I found out that the disk only installed the launcher, so I am looking at several days if not longer to play.
I saw some people said stormblood download was 16 GB. That is at least two weeks for me with my internet.

I don't think any of the disks actually had game content on them. It's always been that way.

Stormblood is 6.2 gigs. Also, 2 weeks to dowbload 16 gigs? I think dialup might be faster than that....

I contacted my isp, and they told me I am on the edge of their coverage area, and my internet is what it is until they update their infrastructure.

Any online game will have you update from the internet. The disk doesn't contain any of the update patches that they have post the release of the game or any fixes that might have happened after they sent out hard copies to the store. While you're getting the disk, you are basically only paying for the code itself.

Just a question: if your internet is that slow, would that not interfere with your gameplay once you got into the game?

Ouch. I feel for ya, OP. But at least that initial download is temporary. I wish you luck in actually playing the game. Even with a much faster connection, I can bet on a 50/50 chance in each dungeon of hitting a major lag spike and possibly disconnecting.

If it honestly would take you 2 weeks to download 16 GB, then there's no way you could play the game normally anyway. Your internet is way, way too slow to have a reasonable experience in-game.

Best to either upgrade your ISP or move to console/single player games.

EDIT: Btw, if you already have HW, it's only 6 GB for Stormblood.

I have the fastest speed that my isp offers, and I have been playing with no problems, so your suggestion to only play single player games is irrelevant. and I have had no problems playing before, so whatever.

Then it wouldn't take you two weeks to download 16 GB. If you can play effectively, then you are being hyperbolic about how long it will take you. And again, if you've been playing HW, it's only 6 GB for Stormblood.

And I didn't say upgrade your package with your ISP, I said get a new ISP. Where do you live? Perhaps I could suggest some options.

The game itself doesn't require that much bandwidth. Around 10-20 Mb per hour, which would be around 480MB tops for 24 hours of continuous play. I don't think they play that much, so the game should run just fine :3

Could take a flash drive and download it at an internet café.

??? I missed the part where OP was blaming SE for his Internet connection, calm down with the white knighting, OP is just venting his frustration.

You don't need a big bandwidth to play the game, you just need a stable ping, this game transfers maybe 60-70KB per second which is nothing.

@OP if you have a laptop or a friend with a laptop try going to any place with free wi-fi, download the game and store it in an USB stick.

How does it feel knowing you bought a piece of paper with some words on it for $40 dollars?

So some quick math:

65k (your low end, reported) / 1024 = 0.006347... MB/s

Times 60 = 3.8 MB/minute

Times 60 = 228.5 MB/hour

Times 24 = 5484.375 MB/day

Divide by 1024 to get that in GB = 5.3558... GB/day

So it would take you just over a day to do the Stormblood download, unless your numbers were exaggerated, or you are really getting only 20KBps, at which point the game would literally be unplayable.

I smell exaggeration.

Sorry but 65 or 70 KB/sec was the best I can get. My internet completely shuts down on a daily basis at around 7:30 to 8:00am my time. it might come back in 15 minutes, or it might be four hours. And when it does, it usually has download speeds of around 10KB/sec until the evening when it fixes itself. And I normally play from 3:30am to whenever my internet messes up since I work early mornings. Yes I got the stormblood downloaded, but that is not the point. Buying the physical copy should do more than tell you to download the game. Also, something I did not mention before, when I tried to install Stormblood from the disk, I got an error message saying I needed to install the base game. So they failed there too.

Plus take into account that if a download fails, It restarts at the beginning, so more lost time.


And yes you smell.

Do you get faster download speeds with your phone? Maybe, if you have the plan to support that much data, tether your phone to your computer and use the cell network for awhile?

Otherwise, I would suggest bringing your computer somewhere that provides internet and connect it to their wifi, if that is possible for you.

That is a good suggestion, but when I last had a cell phone, I had to drive to the end of my driveway and stand in the bed of my truck to get a signal. As far as the other, I do not know.

Many (I'd assume most) come with as much of the game as was ready by the time they needed to get the "final" version to the manufacturer who actually makes the disks, packages them, and sends them out to retailers, who in turn need to get them in time to ship them to customers. All of that requires significant lead time, and the developers continue working on the game during that interim between sending out that print copy and the game's release. Those updates made between the "final" disk version and the actual release date version have to be downloaded, even by those who buy the game on disk.

But usually, you'd at least get the main bulk of the game on the disk, and then just download those updates. If it's true that SE didn't do it that way, and instead printed out useless disks with nothing on them but the launcher, it's a total waste. Why print disks at all rather than just acknowledge that they made a download-only game? Or given that they did print disk versions, why not make use of that to make it easier both for their customers with slow connections and for their own patch servers?

Yes, this so much. When I bought DOOM, which is a steam game, the physical copy was five DVDs. Yes I had to download some patches. but whatever. If I had known that the physical copy of ffxiv was just an installer, I might have bought the digital version instead
