This has always been the case. Welcome to FFXIV PvP. Melee is only fun in 4v4, or if you have dedicated healers.
Yes, melee have it the worst. You need to have a dedicated healer or have impeccable timing if you want to get battle high or fever
Yeah, my experiences leveling RDM and SAM via PvP is that I generally just ignore my melee skills on RDM, and stick to Enpi on my SAM, unless I can find someone who overextends past their group. Every time I decide "I'm gonna go burst that healer or damaged DPS!" I get swarmed to hell.
For frontlines, Stealth is key for NINs to get kills. You most likely won't be able to do much when the whole enemy alliance is just waiting to attack something like when people are hanging out in the middle. You can get a quick kill if you see someone with really low HP (like 20% or lower) hanging back though, and with Shukuchi and the damage down buff (Think it's safeguard?), you might be able to get away without dying yourself even though as soon as you pop up most DPS will just hit tab and target you to damage.
But when everyone is focusing ice or something, it becomes a lot easier to get kills as Ninja thanks to stealth. Range DPS are very squishy and not everyone is paying that much attention to what's around them and waiting to react like when they are in the middle with nothing going around. It feels like I sometimes kill a range DPS at 100% HP all by my self with the stealth kill combo but it's hard for me to tell if others helped with the kill or not. And sometimes there are people missing a bit of health so I don't even need to use stealth assassinate to kill them, just get out of stealth with a Shadow Fang with charged up Ninki for a Bhavacakra or Raiton while doing the standard combo with Mugs.
I've gotten battle fevers in frontline. NIN has some crazy burst still.
You can't charge in to groups on your own, have to be within a pack or killing off stragglers.
Here's some stuff to try.
If in shatter, hit the ice until you build enough gauge to use hide, and before hide takes effect you can build up some more gauge. This lets you use bhavacakra for insane damage on an unsuspecting person. You can probably build enough gauge on them to use raiton too while they try to run away.
You can also use your adrenaline while hidden. Your hide doesn't go off until the adrenaline finishes casting too, before the changes if you tried this, your hide came off instantly I think.
I gotta say I do the miss the old NIN though of infinite hide, it was pretty OP though so it's about time it got nerfed.
One of my favorites in FL has been Shukuchi to range > Hyoton > LB kill > Shukuchi away.
Before 4.0 : Stealth + trick attack + assault +lb as parting gift = kill
After 4.0 : dagger throw, dagger throw , dagger throw, dagger throw, dagger throw, dagger throw ......15% hp left? trimudra raiton = kill
This really isn't exclusive to FFXIV pvp. All MMO's that have open world pvp deal with this problem. Its why alot of pvp in other MMO's have shrunk down to small scale 8v8 / 4v4 type matches and why wpvp for the most part is dead in every single MMO that tries to implement it.
Ninjas are just plain horrible atm,
in any PvP setting.
I used to be able to do extremely well in Frontlines as melee but the removal of CC has ended any and all depth to it. Don't even bother, you'll get some stragglers and damage the ice but not much else.
Agree with some of these posts, Ninja got nerfed big time in PVP. I remember I used to be able to go into Hide and spawn camp unknowing players. It was so much fun. Glad I got a couple hundred Frontlines in as Ninja before Stormblood.
These days Ninja is not as fun to play in PVP due to the new system of Three Mudras and Ninki Gauge to be able to execute ninjutsus. The only good ability in PVP for NIN is Bhavacakra, but even that is limited by a CD and by Ninki guage. However, not all melee has it bad, Samurai is very OP and very fun to play in PVP, if one knows how to use them. Currently maining SAM in PVP and NIN in PVE.
Any melee in frontlines runs the risk of being reeled in by DRKs and gets unceremoniously sodomized!
You have to change ways to approach enemies, current changes kinda forces teamwork, you can't solo 4 players anymore in case of war (for example) or just insta burst-shot someone from 100 to 0.
You have to wait for tanks to lure enemies and CC the targets then you kill.
I completely agree with you Mirch, people should try to understand the purpose of their design instead of thinking "I just throw daggers".
I just would like to add that we can still kinda insta burst-shot someone from 100 to 0 as Machinist. They really are awesome here.
