Ast Quest : Geomancer future job?

So, do you guys think the AST quest hints at Geomancer being a future job?
Or better, some kind of weird mix between AST and ... GEO?

I'm not pointing toward a specific role or anything, although I'd see it as a DPS since the "nature healer" spot has already been taken by our beloved lilies' master. You know, throwing molten boulder and stuff.

Anyway, wattya think?

When they mentioned Geomancy I fully throught they were hinting at GEO.

How would a GEO work exactly? CNJ/WHM are already basically GEOs.

Healer with an actual, effective DPS rotation?

I do plenty of damage on my AST. Healers are not DPS, DPS is an after thought. Plus traditionally in my FF knowledge, though not all that extensive really, GEO was more of a support class, thus I don't think that would be there choice for the "DPS Healer."

DNC on the other hand would be interesting in that role thought it would pretty much break the current battle system for anything other than the hardest of content.

In the AST quest they said that they're basically the same. They divine the future from the star below them, while AST does it from the stars above them.

Their spells involve wind water and earth, and CNJ already has that domain covered.

It would not be a far cry if you just went WHM and role played as a GEO

It's definitely going to be one of the next jobs. They don't hint this much for nothing.

Funny you mention, I actuality have an ability chart suggestion to have geo as a heal/support job. Need to post that sometime.

I would 100% support a Geomancer healer, while white mage does deal with some nature magic overall they have a more "holy" mage feel. And I can see them playing similar to shamans from WOW.

Plus handbells seem to fit in so well with this restrictive weapon system it seems like a perfect fit for the game.

Concerning the view on geo as a heal / support, I am very aware that this is the "by default" role of that job. However, as some people (including myself) pointed, the line between WHM and GEO is very thin as they both deal with the same things, just a different approach. However it is true that every xpac thee WHM becomes more like a Holy Mage
This is why I believe that if they include the geomancer, it would be a DPS, a bit like SMN is the dps version of SCH (or vice versa).

Also, the fact that they first intended to release the geomancer instead of the samurai kinda support my point. They stated in an interview that adding the DRK and AST didn't increase the number of healers in game as most DRK and AST were already playing these roles before.
So I wouldn't be surprised that from the very beggining their intent was to make 2 dps.

Finally, as a last point, we know Yoshi.P wants to add the very high demand job, therefor, we can expect the dancer to be included in a somewhat near future. (by near future I mean, 5.0 / 6.0). Taking into considering the recent addition of two dps and their desire to keep a balance between the number of heal/tank and dps and their statement that they'll never do 3 jobs again within one xpac, my guess is that 5.0 + 6.0 will bring 1 tank 1 heal (And I would be surprised to see both in the same xpac). Therefor, if they include the geomancer as a healer, we can be somewhat sure that we won't see the Dancer the following expansion, which means not until 7.0 -8.0.

From what I've seen, in term of requested future heal, Dancer ＞＞＞ Geomancer. So if they were to really make it a heal, god, we're in for a long wait xD

I was excited to see GEO mentioned in the AST quests. I've been wanting a GEO healer since 2.0ish, with them being a healer focused on fields emanating from themselves and a spirit of the land (Essentially, a rock they can control and move around akin to a fairy) with their emphasis being on shielding and buffing.

I doubt it will happen, but I really hope so.

I would actually say the base CNJ is more of a geomancer than WHM. I would argue that White Magic and Conjury actually have little to do with each other. White (and black) magic involve using the Aether of the area around oneself. In fact the amdapori didn't even know how to commune with the elementals until the age of Gelmorra. Conjury on the other hand is an entirely different principle of borrowing from the elementals, which, especially considering their focus on the three "earthly" elements (Wind/Water/Earth) makes the more geomancyish than anything else, which I guess techncially they COULD commune with Fire, Lightning and Ice elementals, they don't, because I guess they don't give a damn.

This is pretty unfounded considering that they had Samurai essentially planned since Fan Fest 2014 when we saw "the folder" Soken had placed to the side for Samurai also at which point they had roadmapped to 5.0. Also all I see in interviews at that they decided on Samurai quickly along with how it would play, while Red Mage took a bit longer. I believe you read the interview wrong, as it was 'that other job' that could've been instead of Red Mage.

I do not think Geomancer will become reality since CNJ/WHM exist. Knowing how the fans exploded over the 'dancer' in the reveal trailer, it would be odd for them to not go in that direction. I'd guess the original vision with Oracle/Onmyouji was to utilize spirits along with the yin and yang should it have become a thing, not entirely very Geomancer-like.

haha yea when I saw GEO in the AST quest line I got so excited and hoped theyd show us some cool moves! But looks like its just the Othard version of CNJ/WHM ?? Who knows! Maybe they'll make it into a real job and that would be fun. I loved that they gave him the little bell too, even though its just a cnj wand. That quest line was SO MUCH FUN! <3 AST

Something I thought about, but this doesn't necessarily mean anything. There is much more I wanted to add to this to flesh out the argument, but I hit the character limitation lol.

1. The name "Stoneskin" implies an elemental influence. Could it have been only temporarily made unavailable (thus the ability appearing as "crossed out" in a WHM ability bar) until a more appropriate job is created? Stoneskin was a defense buff, so it would make sense that if a GEO type were created, it would be given that buff as part of it's ability set.
2. SE decided to leave in a menu which displays the "Elemental Resistance(s)" of your character (under menu Character --> Attributes). Could it be that they are leaving it in place for future use, quite possibly by a job that can manipulate exact elemental buffs or enemies which can cause more/less damage depending on the stats?

1) Old actions remain on your bar after they're removed so you can see where your actions were and replace them with new ones if available. That's the only reason.

2) Elemental resistances are a hold-over from 1.x and the dev team has no plans to make them meaningful, as it would have the effect of forcing certain party compositions for different fights.


The appearance of GEO in the story is purely for flavor; don't read too much into it. It's just a CNJ with a bell, and wouldn't make a good addition to the system.

I am more interested in the role of the job, is it going to be a healer?

If so, adding a new healer job to current system would make what kind of chemistry to it?

We only have two type of healers which are regen healers and shield healer. So is geomancer gonna be another hybrid like AST? or they are going to rework the whole thing and make the four healer jobs to a 2 hot healers v 2 shield healers situation...

To be honest, while I can see GEO becoming a job in the future, I personally doubt it would be a healing class, but become a druid-like DPS class based on the conjurer class, like how Summoner and Scholar both are based on the Arcanist class. Kyokuho used a wand, so like how Scholars use Codexes versus the Summoners using grimoires. The Devs could just get rid of the ability to have a shield or replace the off hand with bells instead. Though it'd probably just be easier to put bells in the wands.

Of course, there are problems with that as well. GEO would be better at healing that RDM and SMN because it would have access to two single-target heals, and two group heals, though I can easily see Medica II becoming a WHM only skill.

There are a lot of ways they can do it. They could make it another healing job that focuses more on elemental spells with a Feng Shui gimmick, like giving it Water as an offensive spell and bringing back Stoneskin for it.

I'm working on AST now, so I'll have to see how Geomancy works in the game for me to really get a handle on it.

AST quest pretty clearly stated that GEO has many similarities to AST and overlap with it. In my understanding it's exactly opposite from hints about possible new job.

While the idea of wielding a bell is extremely cute to me, I can't imagine GEO being that interesting when we already have WHM using elemental magic. Would it be sort of like MNK and WHM together?

Well, that's a shame. I mean, at this point it's kinda obvious they won't do that because if they were they already would have. But I always thought it'd be a fun thing to do.

I can't see them getting rid of class altogether. Not unless they do a time skip a la A Realm Reborn because of the rarity of certain jobs where the WoL is supposed to be the only one outside of a certain group of people. Black and White Mages come to mind.

Back to the topic; this just makes me think if they make Geomancer a job it'd be better if it were a DPS job so it wouldn't have too much overlap with WHM.

It's mostly about balancing issue.

It's easier for them to simply create a new job.
This is one of the reason SMN got upgraded DoT and extra Ruin while SCH got Boil. To simplify balancing by reducing the amount of shared skills to a minimum.


As another example, they litteraly had to rework the way SMN do AoE in order to buff their AoE without affecting SCH AoE capability. And vice versa for SCH with Miasma II *i think that's the name i forgot*

It doesn't mean they can't make related jobs in term of lore.
Like, we could very well at some point have a dps conjurer-like job. (After all, Mach and Amdapor did have a war so clearly some of them must have been specialised in inflicting pain)
But granting a dps class access to all the conjurer skills would just be an annoyance. Look at SMN, if they could they'd remove them physick. And I actually wouldn't be surprised to see physic moved to SCH at some point.

Regarding lore and theme they can pretty much do what they want. As much as GEO lore was hinted to be closely related to AST, it doesn't mean they can't simply twist the whole thing where we meet a Geomancer who dwelved into the destructive aspect of this art making it more akin to a dps WHM/ELementalShaman (from WoW). As I said, Amdapor did wage war against Mach and they surely didnt do it by spamming Medica and Tetragrame on their enemies. Experts at doing damage must have mastered more potent spell than Stone/Aero-ga. After all, in the current context our WHM is a healer that can inflict pain, not the opposite.
Same goes for the AST with Time Mage, just because AST has access to 2-3 skills doesn't mean they can't make something entirely new.

OP: I've thought for a while they could introduce GEO as a DPS class branching off of CNJ/PUG (before they got rid of cross-class stuff, anyway), to sort of do for WHM what SMN does for SCH: Give you a DPS Job when you level the healing Job. It makes sense considering what the base CNJ already does. Giving it melee abilities with a resource that stacks to let them insta-cast magic abilities would work - like how Enhancement Shamen in WoW worked for a while (get 5 stacks, get an instant cast of spells).

Given, they're prob going to separate SCH/SMN in the future, but it seemed like an idea. Alternatively, could be a hammer wielding melee/caster hybrid...except we already have RDM for that?

But cool to know it's in the lore (haven't leveled AST myself).
