Is this the norm for mmos

So I'm sure I want get to much feedback on this but I'm just really curious as I have limited mmo experience. But I got early access first time ever being apart of the start of an expansion, and I must admit I am pretty shocked at how fast people are blowing through the msq.

Its been a total of three days and a good portion of people are already done, and let me say this I have no problem with this not bashing those people. But part of me feels like in order to keep up that I have to kinda follow as a result even tho I know I don't but just feels like if you don't finish the msq this week you will be lagging behind. I'm just curious are all mmos this way or is this something unique to ff 14 like do all mmos just kinda get beating in a matter of days.

Its just strange to me I was late to hw and after I finished the main part of the msq there up to thordan, the dragonsong portion was so much less content in comparison. So overall after finishing this we will have a raid tier, three or four more primals and three 24 mans. Is the reason for the drop off in subs so fast is because of how easily the content is to burn through. Im not knocking anyone again just a bit surprised as I seem to be the only one I know that doesn't exactly want to burn through a huge portion of the game.

You have different people different goals as it were. There are those who want to quickly rush through everything and we'll to be able to get to end game as soon as possible. Those are usually the ones that raid and Etc dedicated Raiders I should say. And then you have those that just take it in stride and let their own pace and have fun. My would say play how you want to if you want to rush go right ahead if you want to take at your own pace and joy main story Side Story etcetera just play how you want to play enjoy it how you want to whatever gives you the most enjoyment for your time.

we get through the MSQ by playing it for 30-40 hours in 2 days. that's basically any regular RPG.

it's not really all that fast for some people it just shows you the ability for MMO players to grind when they have new non-repetitive content to grind on.

Thats the thing Im of both minds I guess I really dont want to rush the msq , but I feel the longer I wait to finish the harder I make it on myself to do the new extreme primals or attempt raiding. I did take my time in hw , it was mixed results, I cleared all the primals but one (zurvan), and even did some raiding but part of me felt like if I kept up with everyone else my experience would of been better.

I cleared but never really got to farm status, Im just worried if I wait a month to do say the three new primals that perfection will already be established in the pf , and Id just be starting to learn them for the first time. I guess when everything is locked behind msq its like you have to chose to enjoy the story or rush to endgame.

Don't feel pressured just play like I said how you want to play even if others get far ahead and you're still progressing it'll still be others that are like-minded and will help out and assist you with any dungeons or anything you need sometimes they can be hard to find but they are usually out there and will lend a helping hand.

Yes. This happens with every MMO i have ever played. I've been playing MMOS since 1998 and this happens all the time.

And the cycle is extremely predictable:

1. Game or expansion drops
2. Race to the end ensues
3. Some bragging rights also ensues
4. Some people were happy with their two day journey of rushing it.
5. Some people will regret it

Then end game anger ensues

1. Some people mad end game isn't what they thought

However, FFXIV is great with endgame content so I see no worries there.

For the most part it's a bragging race really (nothing wrong or bad with that but that's how I see it)

Yes, it is normal. If you are not in a static that plans to raid Savage the first week it releases, feel free to enjoy the ride a bit.

Take your time. You can always make your own PFs. I was doing it for Zurvan Ex until like 3 days before Stormblood Early Access. I got to it about 2 weeks after patch launch. It is possible to catch up. Also, see if you can join an FC that likes doing old content (synced preferably of course, so you can experience it closer to how it was). It's not the end of the world being late. But you're more likely to have fights spoiled.

This is normal for every mmorpg I've ever played. Different people enjoy different things

Honestly with this game, I'd encourage being a bit behind unless you're in a world first static.

I've found this game extremely dull once completing the main content... playing since 1.0, I myself am rushing out of instinct, but even then I think I'm done for doing so as my raid days came to an end.

Relax, with the new changes find a job you really like, and do what you really enjoy in the game. If anything avoiding content is the way to go considering how packed every NPC is

It's weird because FFXIV population it's mostly casual, so for most of the population rushing and playing like 12 hours a day it's the perfect recipe to burn themselves in a week, after that all you have to do is farm once again.

Thats what I had been planning Im a tank main so I know I could easily finish the msq in less than a week with all the instant ques and df giving tons of exp and front lines giving alot as well. Im level 64 on my pali, but my plan was to level a dps with the msq exp sense I dont really need it on my tanks with how the que times are. But I also wanted to level rdm and sam to 60 cause I really enjoy the game play of both the new jobs.

I ran into hurdles like everyone else with gettin kicked from the game multiple times even had to re download the game cause I unplugged it and my ps4 forced me to re-download the whole game for 6 or 7 hours so I missed alot of leveling time(a major glitch) . If I had no hopes for any endgame I would def go as slow as possible , I just dont wana be lacking when it comes to when I get to the new primals when everyone else may already have them on farm. But I just cant help but think this is the bulk of the game at least the story part, five quest per patch if you like msq at all is just not good design in my opinion.

Yeah, it is pretty much normal.
In all MMOs there are always some people who rush through any new content in just a day or two.

Not all people go through it so quickly though - so do not feel forced to keep up with the rushers.

The game is meant to be played at an enjoyable pace, patches are meant to be time sinks. That's why relic weapon quests take forever...until they nerf them when they are about to become obsolete glam items. It's there to keep you with something to do until the next expansion. Find why you play and do that. The way Squeenix makes this game there are always people running the current content no matter where you are in the MSQ. The only things that are hardish to do are old raid content.

I'm not all that experienced with modern MMOs either, but this game has far quicker "gear inflation" cycle than any I've played. I suspect WoW is similar now, but I haven't touched it in ages. Coupled with the typical weekly Tomestone lockout and the result is, yes, if you're not constantly pushing the content, you'll end up "behind" the gear curve. It won't matter in general, but you will fall behind a bit.

As for me personally, the dull content cycle is precisely why I'm subscribed fewer than six months a year, on average. I can't speak for others, but I know it's been a frequent complaint on the forums. Every so often SE will introduce something new and different, like Palace of the Dead, but for each successful bit of new content (PotD being one), there are more that fall spectacularly flat upon initial implementation (Hunts, Diadem). So if you aren't grabbed by the gear grind (Tomestones or Relic), or addicted to Crafting / Gathering (which are a lot more grind-y), you'll probably end up bored for much of the update cycles.

This is totally normal. Some will take their time, do other optional content, gather, craft etc.

Others will power up the energy drinks and plowthrough skipping cinematic just to reach end game asap, fight for world firsts and complain about lack of or easiness of content.

The mmo cycle goes on.

Edit: I have played a ton since launch but I'm only in the ruby sea, exploring, working on my crafts and having a blast.

The inflation is actually pretty tame in this game. In my experience most other games have a much higher curve. And WoW blows it away. In legion alone, with two raid tiers still to go, ilvl has jumped 300 points.

Theres no reason to worry about other people and how far they are progressed. This game is developed in a way that you wont miss anything. I came back with three months left before SB, got three patches of story done, all of the associated dungeons, all 24 man raids, all alex, and primals. Your never so far behind that you cant catch up quickly.

It all depends on whether the player does it for enjoyment and story or just because it is a chore. MSQ or the main story is not the only thing an MMO can/does provide.

You can never truly be behind so much that it hurts you. Been awhile since I've seen an mmo not have shortcuts as new content comes out.

Now back in vanilla wow... lol good luck. Want to raid naxx? Start farming MC for gear to raid BRD, which you need for AQ, and maybe finally get into naxx. Also need 39 others for each raid.

I'm one of those people who already finished but I had fun. My whole leveling group had fun even with all the issues. Just wanted to point that out for some people who posted.

For the OP, doesn't sound like you have a reason to keep up with us raiders so don't feel pressured.

I am taking my time. Run the dungeons on my tank and side quest and MSQ on my SMN. I learned from HW if you rush to the end it gets real boring. Since new tomes don't release until 4 weeks, there is plenty of time to enjoy the content

I feel it's only necessary to rush past the initial story if you want to be a part of the first wave of progression parties on the new EX primals. And definitely before the first week is over to cap on tomestones.

Quite normal. You have those who don't read quest text or npc dialog, which by the way after most cut scenes you should talk to any scion or near by npc as they tend to have additional dialog, or are people that want to get to the end game content for one reason or another. It does not mean you should rush. Enjoy the content for what it is there for and you will get there eventually.

But the weekly cap one is called Tomestone of Creation, we don't have that yet. Verity, afaik is like lore tomes.

Personally, I am taking my time with the MSQ, playing with my BF and FC members. While others enjoy rushing and such, not me..never have. I love to take my time and play with the people who are important to me ^^ The content isn't going anywhere and its worth waiting imho!

I rejoined the game in March, and needed to grind hard (limited playtime, job/wife/other interests) to get to where I could do SB when it came out, so I am absolutely taking my sweet time. I am actually letting all the dialogue play out, reading all the text, walking instead of running, etc. I tried to do that as much as I could with the Dragonsong bridge between HW and SB, because FF games rock for story, and it shouldn't be missed imho, so now that I know I have a two year window to listen to Alphinaud, I will let him have his dialogue glory. =)

That said, yes, in any MMO xpac early release, tons of people will be racing to get world/server firsts. Buddy of mine got 3 of them in WoW, all related to crafting. World firsts are a thing for some people.

I don't think racing through the content is exactly normal for everyone, but it certainly is for some people. I'm not racing through. I'm still making sure I do gathering and crafting everyday, making sure I read the dialogue on the quests and picking up every quest I see. I'm also just running around the new zones and exploring, checking things out just to take in the environments. I'm also still running leveling roulettes on my AST to level it up.

I'm not fast by any means but I like to run the MSQ and its dungeons at as close to level as I can. If you slow down and do the side quests and fates you will tend to out level the MSQ. So in my case, and I guess others, I will go back to do the side quests that flesh out the story after we're done. The only exception is I do try to get the flying quests done as soon as possible to unlock flying.

The sad answer is..........yes lol

I've been that type of player before when I had a lot more free time and met many others who do. Don't feel bad about it; most players who progress that fast have very little going for them outside of their MMO lives.

Been Playing this game for a long time now to Recommend you to NOT rush it, you will never fall behind the community that will hinder your progression, and if experience serves me well, most ppl that rushes the content are the first ones to come to the forums complaining that there's nothing else to do weeks after the release of patches...

Enjoy your time, explore, discover everything it has to offer do the side quest and unlock everything at your own pace, is less stressful, doesn't burn you out, and more rewarding, the story (at least for me) feels more complete and memorable because I pay attention and take the time to appreciate it. you will reach end game just as anyone else and you will catch up with everyone eventually before the first patch of 4.0.

enjoy yourself and don't let others influence your experience.

Generally yes.. then comes months of people saying how bored they are fate grinding or tome farming etc etc lol

I made the mistake of rushing through Heavensward and in the end I regretted it. I rushed and skipped through the story all the way to the end and for what? To grind the same two dungeons over and over again for the same tomestomes to buy the same gear.

For Stormblood, my friend and I are going through it together at a far slower pace. We're stopping along the way to do certain things and I'm definitely enjoying myself a lot more this time through.

It really just boils down to preference or goals. Personally I chose to get through the MSQ and level my main to 70 and start end game content where as many in my FC decided to level a SAM or RDM as the first thing to do. It also didnt help that instances were messed up for the EA so while I was able to get past the Raubahn and Pipin gates others could not and just leveled.

Don't let yourself get pressured, some people are more crazy, some people less. I'm astonished how fast some people are as well.. and I feel like I'm sorta rushing already, but I can't play all day either, just a few hours in the evening. Some people take time of work for these kind of occasions to just go all in (I actually wish I could do that, I was pretty bored before but now my fire for FFXIV is lit again!).

There are still plenty of people who won't rush or can't rush. I'm even leaving for vacation on saturday and I probably won't even get to 70 before that T_T.

You'll be alright in anyway you progress through this expansion.

I was one of the lucky who got passed RaubEX, but couldn't really talk about anything in FC chat because spoilers. I putz around in Kugane for a day. Then decided to level SCH and now most of my FC is ahead of me. We're all pretty chill and tackling it at different paces and I think that's the way it should be. Just enjoy it how you want.

Savage will open its doors in 4 weeks. All kinds of stuff with weekly cap will start in 4 weeks (except for story mode, which is not interesting to me as I will start savage with a crafted gear set). I will start with Savage in 4 weeks. But no reason to rush through the MSQ.
