I'm wondering what changed. Or maybe it helps that there were new jobs of each role, or that the first new dungeon was optional?

Nineth quest in at level 50: At the End of Our Hope. You had to track the heretics to their lair, following footprints and beating a few minions down. Similarly, Best Served with Cold Steel is eighth for Stormblood.
Difference:
Players had the option to do first the MSQ in Western Coerthas (with Redwald against Heretics) and then in the Abalathic Cloud of Sea (with Emmanellain against Vanu Vanu) or the other way.
Difference: Despite all of SB's negative server errors during event movement, covfefe
Like there is another MSQ quest chain in the other area that is accessible just like HW. I feel like a lot of the problems are from SE not properly taking into account the number of players who joined during HW and those who came back so they put this solo instance limitation in place.
...LOL!!!
That's right. When I realized I couldn't get through Raubahn, I went to do the other questline. Of course, by the time I was done with the other part, still couldn't get into the Raubahn fight. I only managed to get in by pure chance. Took about 20+ times of clicking the dude.
In HW early access we had the problem where Ishgard was so congested that if you were in House Fortemps and tried to exit you couldn't, because the zone was so full, and you DCd.
Not as lucky as some! Several FC members got in before me and I was pretty jealous! Thought I was gonna be behind the Raubahn Wall for the whole weekend.
I wasn't around for the Heavensward launch, but for ARR I got TOTALLY locked out of the game for the entire early access. I was almost expecting the same thing to happen. :x
And both ways ended at a solo instance at the same time.

I kiiinda doubt that had much impact.
I had zero issues with this in HW despite the old wonky servers. I was able to progress with ease through the first instance.
3.0 had issues - though for me they were minimal and I didn't see as many players locked out of the MSQ's as I do with 4.0.
3.0 once you were actually on the server tended not to be so bad. Actually getting on was the problem atleast in my exp. Multiple times got to the end of the long queue only to 90k until about halfway through the second day. But it was smooth sailing from there.
Meanwhile SB I can actually log on even with the long(er it seems) queue. But not being able to do the MSQ is for sure very frustrating.
the main reason people were able to do hw without the issues of solo dungeons was because the main city was accessible from the start. It didn't get gated off like this main city. Also 3 jobs to cause people to go level... starting at 30 not 50. We had more new stuff to do instead of hey go do the msq or level up 10 levels before you are already at the same level as your old job.
