Is anyone else worried that Yoshi P won't finish Final Fantasy XIV?

Is it just me or are other FFXIV fans worried he wont finish the series? There was a total of 2 years between 2.0 and 3.0 and I believe he has come out and said there will be a total of 9 expansions!! If he keeps up this pace thats another 18 years! I feel like only other FFXIV nuts will feel the worry I feel! Any thoughts? EDIT: Let me clarify that when I say FFXIV I mean A Realm Reborn (not 1.0)!

My faith is solely devoted to Yoshida and the development team. I will always be cheering him on & have no doubt in him.

WoW is 13 years old and still going strong, if there is demand then the game will keep running, if the demand dwindles then the plan will change.

So I take it you guys did not read the inv they had with him about this? He already said he will NEVER give up on FFXIV .. Even if it ever pick up a new game.

reminds me of gaben and TF2, "after 9 years in development hopefully it will have been worth the wait."

Pfft he can't even fnish the patch notes lol

But seriuosly he may give up one poducer or director charge at some point, don't remember which one, but he'll be here all the way to the end if nothing bad happens.

ff17 will probably be the new mmorpg if not 18

Finish? MMOs don't get finished. Eventually they are abandoned by players and developers, but not finished.
While Yoshi-P has done much good for FFXIV I am sure there exist other people who can take over should he leave FFXIV for whatever reason.
No, I am not worried.

As far as I can see, the devs have the courage to change the game even from its very roots, 1.0 as example, and 4.0 now with the jobs reworked, so I guess that XIV will have a bright future in the years ahead, and the XIV that we will play 4 years from now, maybe can be a completely different game than the one we have today.

If they keep trying to invent new system/feature and update their engine or use new engine to keep the graphic up to standard, sure why not.

But if not, by the time they reach 6 or 7th expansion iam afraid majority of people will go "i get it when its cheap" thinking.

Short of a personal/family accident, he has no reason not to.

People in the West often quit for greener pastures, Western corporations often cut staffing just to meet arbitrary shareholder demands. Asia is another story where there is a strong sense of loyalty and management will often cut their own pay before letting go of staff if that is what it takes to retain people.

So I'd actually suggest FFXIV will outlive WoW.

FFXI is still around, so I doubt FFXIV is going to fade away anytime soon. ;p JP keeps things alive. o/

XI was finished. It hasn't been abandoned but Rhapsodies of Vanadiel was intended as the end point of the game.

They have a good solid path and FF14 is very successful. Even if someone takes over I would expect them to continue in the same direction. Game development can be a soul crushing experience even when it goes well and Yoshi P didn't take over under the best circumstances. I can only imagine how much of his personal life he has sacrificed to get this game back on track. At some point even a successful director will get burnt out and it might even be in the game's best interest to bring in someone fresh. So if it happens and he leaves I think it will be ok for the game.

Last time I looked FFXI was still getting new content on a regular basis, even after it was officially put into maintenance mode. Doesn't sound finished to me.

It's finished. Doesn't mean it's shut down, but XI has been retired -- literally put out to pasture. SE is putting bare minimal resources into it simply because a small number of folks still insist upon playing it. But the game will never be more than it is right now. Its honest development is done, and the new content is minimal and not actually anything new.

Shut down? No. Finished? Yes. They literally roll the game's end credits after Rhapsodies -- even SE is saying "Game Over."

It was a great ending, though!

Well, if he gears up sufficiently and get's through the final MSQ Trial, I'm sure he can make it. But that min ilvl is a pain in the butt to reach if you are a game producer/director and have no time to raid.

I guess we could make a premade party for him and help him skip the ilvl check and get through. He is the game producer/director after all, we kinda owe him.

I don't recall him saying 9 expansions............but I do recall saying that he wanted it for 10 years. We are at year 4. My guess is that expac 6 will be the last with ff17 or ff18 being a MMO

Depends on if it retains a healthy playerbase. If it starts to dwindle, they'll write a finale expansion just like was done with FFXI, and keep it maintained and tweak it here and there.

If Runescape is still alive, then I really don't think we need to worry for a while.

Well FFXI was finished with the Rhapsody of Vana'diel being the finale to FFXI storyline.

Then in FFXIV we got the Epilogue of FFXI as Maiden's Rhapsody.

I'm not worried. Based on Yoshi-P's apparent lack of desire to significantly change up XIV's oft-bland content cycles, I'd actually be excited about the game being placed under a new director. I don't think he's done a bad job, per se, but I think his usefulness is a year or two away from ending, tops, unless he discovers the ability to think outside the box and be ambitious.

Having the arc for them end and finding out about Zodiark or the secret behind Hydaelyn or who the Warrior of Light actually is… even if we did reveal all that and have closure, it’s still not the end of the story. We can always make more expansions, maybe we’ll go to Vana’diel or something like that- “Return to Vana’diel” (laughs)

So it lookes like Yoshi wants to keep going and going..............which even exceeds my expectations.

There's no tellin' how long FFXIV is gonna last so I say don't worry and just enjoy it while it's alive and well.

i'd consider the game done after we deal with Varis and Zodiark. anything after that is a bonus.

I would rather this game do all the things it set out to do, and let the story gracefully reach an epic and satisfying conclusion several years from now (not eighteen years, but several). There will inevitably come a time when Eorzea and its denizens have done enough, and any more than that will begin to wear out their welcome or jump the shark. Subsciptions will dwindle. Budget will be cut. Servers will merge, then merge again.

Whenever this time comes, I would rather see Eorzea take a bow and exit the stage with dignity, and let Yoshi P and his team get to work on FFXVIII or FFXIX, or whatever number we're at. Just think how amazing it would be to see him produce a new game from scratch, using the lessons he's learned throughout working on FFXIV!

I suspect that ffxiv will go the ffxi route. They will finish the story in like 10 years. Then they will hand it over to a new dev team and stop support for consoles all together and make QoL updates that couldn't happen because console limitation.
