The emote spam issue

Over the years this has been an issue that never gets addressed. I understand emotes are for social interaction, but people abuse these a lot! And I, for one, am finally fed up.

There a lot of people that don't have their log text off. This is fine, if they moderate their output. Unfortunately there are plenty of people that play like 5-8 emotes in a row. If you're REALLY unlucky, they just emote spam to spam and won't even wait till the movement has ended or are just plain doing it to be annoying. This abuse of the emote system has to stop.

Please, my suggestion is: Do something about the emote spamming. Nothing major, just maybe something as simple as what some chats have as delay. Thus blocking the text of consecutive emotes. I am aware this is not something that will block sound and movement, but it doesn't have to. Just the flood of text. Sounds and motion can be dealt with, the spammed text is intrusive. This is especially annoying when trying to keep up with friend chat.

They should set the emote text to off by default, would fix the problem pretty well.

I'm guilty of this from time to time. I forget what the animations for the emotes look like so I go through some to look at them.

Actually that is not spamming as badly as I seen it. I can understand wanting to do that, especially for a screenshot or such and unknown to what they do. And if you turn off the text, it still works the same. The spam I always see is like 10 times worse...

why is this even a topic? You could easily fix this yourself, but to each his own.

Because chat filters turn it off for EVERYONE. And I am talking about emote spam. I do use emotes, as do my friends, that I DO want to see. The text spam is what needs addressed, not the general emote text. Surely you can understand that difference.

Well then you have blacklist for the player. Now if they are all doing it together then they may be roleplaying. But if you don't want to do either then move a few feet away :S Can also put the filter on battle and just click that tab when in the area.

Not the spam I'm talking about. It is to fast in a row. No RP uses that much emotes, that fast. Ye I could move a few feet away but in the time it takes me to get out of 'chatrange', often my chat with friends has already been flooded away. I really don't see what the problem is to add a chat delay. It wouldn't obstruct the people that use them for true RP or for social movements in chat, but it would get rid of the flooding ones. We should not have to switch tabs when a delay is easily added (and used by many other MMO already) It is not like I am asking them to perform a miracle on RMT spammers (who populate my blacklist btw, because they aren't dealt with. Sadly blacklist has a maximum)

This is actually reportable, same with people spamming ascii in chat.

If they're following you around pressing the same one 20 times in a row that's definitely reportable. The same goes for NSFW custom emotes and racist custom emotes.

Not following around no, I would have taken this directly to support email then, rather than a topic in general discussion (which they point out as the place to post feedback/suggestions). I should remember this. I'm completely fine with people emoting, just there are plenty of times you just stand still and chat to friends and they spam one after another. Consideration of your fellow players goes a long way.

When /happy motion doesn't gives me the desired attention, then I have no other option. Sorry for your chat but my emotes are more important.

I usually report them.

However, I usually send them a tell first kindly asking to turn off the emote texts.
But usually i get something along the lines of "lul cry moar plz,<insert random insult>"....so thats when I have a pretty good base to report them.
And I'll gladly do that....I mean,I asked nicely first.


I also do wanna receive normal emotes meant for me that I might miss otherwise, but emote-spamming is annoying af, and my Blacklist has a limit and I'd rather use it for people I SERIOUSLY wanna avoid for more severe reasons.



edit: small remark: i dont report for someone repeating 5-10 emotes in a row...more like when its 30+ withina few seconds.

I turned the emotion option in chat off a long time ago, in fact. This is what my chat is setup as in game:

I like a clean chat box and with this i don't have to deal with all the useless chat stuff. I don't even have system messages on, much less stuff and i can see what people are saying without having to scroll through other crap.

If someone is truly spamming, and I mean really over the top, chaining them for pages, then yes you can report them. And if they're following you around doing it that can easily give you a case for harassment.

That said... if you're offended by a just a couple here and there, there's a variety of ingame tools to deal with it. Using the chat filters above... and you have tabs, so you can still use a tab that has them enabled when you're with your friends or just away from big social hubs. If it's just the occasional person, blacklist is your friend.

I think many of us aren't really looking at the underlying cause. Being cute is one thing. Sometimes people think its a prank on whatever, or they think its clever, or they're just poking a friend, oblivious to the fact there are others seeing it too.

But then you have the ones. You all know who I'm talking about. The ones who do it strictly for attention. They are going out of their way to annoy every stranger around them. They want a response.. any response, good or bad. They suffer from some sort of attention withdrawal. What should be done about these people? They're actions are hurting themselves. They honestly have a problem. Thankfully there isn't many. But they still exist.

I'm not bringing this up because I believe SE needs to remove them. That doesn't fix the problem. They honestly need some sort of help. When I played another game a while back. One such individual was the general chat troll. He'd emote into the chat that he was making bodily functions. Would go on and on about how another game was better than said game the chat was apart of. As well as say other outrageous things as bait. I would say about half the people in the general chat put him on ignore. About a quarter took the bait and got trolled, while the last quarter simply watched with some mild amusement at best or simply tuned it out.

One evening for whatever reason, there just wasn't many online or simply less people were taking the bait. But not much if any chatter was going on and he tried to stir up some crazy discussion on whatever political issue was abound. No one responded. He tried to tone it down by making a game reference. Again, no one responded. He did one of his silly emotes in chat. No one responded. He went silent for a few minutes before going on this tirade about how no one is speaking. He got more desperate when again.. no one responded.

Most of his chatter after that was incoherent and eventually he logged off. Truth be told. I wasn't sure if I'd see him online again. And there wouldn't be any way to tell if he hurt himself or another. That was a bit scary, and mostly sad to think about.

How many people out there are like that? Its just weird and sad to say the least. And unfortunately no solution in sight. Pretty much ignore them and hope they don't hurt themselves.

Stay here long enough and the insane will seem perfectly normal.

Reminds me of one dude complaining over the spell spam in Mor Dhona. Honestly I miss those times when people were more laid back and just did stuff spontaneously.

Why add another system in though when three systems are in place to deal with it blacklist,turn off emotes in a chat tab or actually move away. As for having a delay that is just daft if someone is roleplaying. i.e player 1 waves for hello, second player responds with wave and then tells a joke, player 1 now has two wait 4 more seconds to use laugh. Now I don't Rp and sometimes find them annoying but they do.

Now lets say a few players decide to be annoying and create macros using emotes to spam, even with the delay it will still look like mass spam if multiple people do it at the same time. So the problem is still not sorted.

I just /blacklist anyone that emote spams, I don't need those kind of people in my life. Let's talk about bigger issues like Ring of Thorns, that's roughly 100x more annoying if you play with the sound on.

You can count me as another passenger on the hate train. I'm not as bothered by the text as I am the character sounds repeating over and over again. I can't remember if blacklisting turns that off as well, though. I just can't see any reason, even RP, for spamming an emote beyond wanting to be obnoxious.

Why even use only one chatbox at the same time? One for chat (say, group, ls, etc) and one for system/loot/emote/etc. messages.

Emotes are one method of expression in this game, freedom of expression is pretty fundamental to most nations these days, and you're advocating a restriction on it?

Considering that emotes are a way to communicate and interact, I have to ask exactly how do you define emote spamming, and who get's to decide when someone is spamming emotes? There's no way this will end well.

I'm with Kosmos here, anyone who feels emotes should be limited or removed is just someone who clearly doesn't wanna take the time to set the option off so they feel everyone should stop because THEY don't like it.. People seriously need to grow up instead of limiting stuff for others..

The chat system should just be smart enough to suppress multiple emote lines automatically if generated after a certain threshold. There's no legitimate use for it, even when role-playing. This wouldn't suppress the animations, just the chat message. You shouldn't need to turn it off for everyone just to deal with obnoxious players.

Is this a server/community specific issue? It's never happened to me, and if it did I feel that the in-game tools would give me everything I need to deal with it. I don't tend to idle and chat in the middle of groups of people though.

Since I play zoomed out and my character is tall I would never notice emotes if the majority of people didn't activate the log text. If these people are being annoying on purpose then they would just switch the option on again anyway...

Wow so people will complain at just about anything... it's sad really.

Why not just put the emote spammer on your blacklist? That's what it's there for.

That literally looks like how it is on Shiva but with like .. 10-15 People at once during Peak Times when they RP.
Though, to this Day nobody got Offended as we simply don't care or People turned the "Emote Notifications" off.

If it bothers someone, just edit the Chat Settings, not really that hard^^
