This is a rip off. I mean really?!
FFXI characters are only $1 extra, we already pay the base subscription there is no reason to have such extortionate fees.

Why is optional vanity content always expensive?
Ask that from the industry.
$1.00 for the extra character + $2.00 reoccurring HD Surcharge
Very silly. I guess they still thought the backward business plan put in place earlier would be good to go live with.
It's only $3 I could prob find that in my couch.
It wouldn't bother me so much if it didn't feel so idiotic. Like they are saying ya you can pay for the service if you like, but you know you can't play unless you also pay for a character slot. That's what bothers me about the model they showed. The base cost should include one character slot I don't understand why that's noted as a separate cost when you NEED one character slot to even play the game.
Exactly.. I wanted to keep my materia for good gear down the track, plus some crafting mats etc..
The simple fact is if it was $1 per character I wouldn't think twice about keeping them.
Now I'll be burning all the stuff I wont be immediately using in the wards/npc
Probably because they are expecting most players to use their retainers as their Mules and any additional characters as actual PCs as I do.
I am just a bit worried. Free - and this is the lowest I have ever seen the population at any given point. In a month they will begin to charge. I'd like to think it's the ripe gaming season, but I secretly think most people bailed due to payment announcement.
People can say whatever they like at this point, but if the game is reduced to so few players it becomes unenjoyable to the lot of us.
I think there would be a lot of money to be made for charging one dollar per extra retainer. I know I'd buy a couple.
lol
Square wants more money. Offering a vanity service for unreasonable cost is what brings them said money.
20 bucks for a shiny pony in WoW.
5 bucks for two alternate character costumes in SFIV.
Team Fortress 2 hats.
Overpriced weapon packs in any generic FPS.
SE does what everyone else does. It's not reasonable but it's not mandatory either. Also, it has nothing to do with game balance or whatever, lol. That's just being an apologist.
its 3 dollars for extra characters so they can milk all the RMT accounts with multiple characters on it.
except that really isn't feasible for many of us who have accumulated quite a bit of items. One of my retainer is completely filled up with the more commonly used intermediate crafting materials, and the other is half filled with event/dungeon items(which i'm going to have to trash), food and gears, which also takes up nearly half of my character's inventory.
This is before taking into account of the raw material stock from my three DoL class, the HQ base/intermediate mats I'm saving for the new HQ system, materia, extra food, and a huge stock of less-often used, but still useful materials.
granted, I'm probably in the minority here, but I can't imagine anyone who deals extensively with crafting and gathering while also doing DoW/M can find a single character's inventory slots sufficient.
I'm no RMT >_>;;
besides, it's another service fee + $3 for each additional character for people who want actual usable mule since there's no in-game delivery system, in my case this would push my monthly cost for FF14 to $32.
Which I'm obviously not going to pay, so I'm just gonna have to liquidate/npc/trash my inventory.
Hell, I consider most vanity services way overpriced for any game. But some people still pay it up so I guess it's worth it to offer them.
I'm not saying that it's okay for SE to do this, all I'm saying is that everyone does it in some form or another (mostly for vanity stuff) and SE is not some exception here. It's a plague for the whole industry and to act like only SE does this sort of thing is silly.
Because this is one of very few MMO's that allow your character to be any class.
Be happy that SE actually tell you how much they charge for your char the fee for FFXIV with 1 char is 12.99 while other game it is 15 minimum and how much they charge for your char I dont know
Doesn't Eve Online have an item mall? (never played it not too sure, but I thought it did...)
Yeah I am just saying know your audience. I think most people still playing are familiar and didn't have a huge problem with the $1 per character ffxi fee. I think people would be more inclined to add an extra character or two, but maybe $3 per char will profit more or something.
Well, SE probably knows the relation of people who paid the character fee and used them as a storage mule instead of a full-fledged alt, and came up with the current solution (extra storage service is the same 1$ you are used to from XI, while alts cost more).
I think XI players are not that familiar with the whole alt concept in my honest opinion and prefer a mule service instead.
Except at this stage addition retainers past your first will be billed at $3.
You would be cheaper to buy another character for the retainer as well as personal inventory.
All these arguments will mean nothing when they reduce the inventory back to 80 and only one retainer per character the rest will be billed. We already know they intent to put it back down.
Don't even try to compare Eve Online to any MMO out there when it comes to economy, especially XIV. You can virtually own real life money in Eve Online. Sell it for in-game currency, exchange it, transport it and even destroy it. The economy is just at a whole different level.
i remember them saying it was $3.00 for a character & $1.00 for a retainers back in early 2010
dont know who uses 2 character on one account to be mad because you need one character only and thats it.
As before, and until the release of Version 2.0, players will be entitled to employ two Retainers at no charge.
At this stage, you get two retainers for free. Any additional retainer costs a dollar.
I don't see what the original release has to do with anything. It's 2011 now, not 2010.
You sure?
"As before, and until the release of Version 2.0, players will be entitled to employ two Retainers at no charge."
I take that as meaning that while we'll have our two retainer for free, there's also no option for purchasable retainers until at least 2.0, especially since they made no mention of the purchasable retainers at all :(
if you have info that indicate otherwise however, I'd love to see it, since I was really hoping to get some extra retainers :/
They did introduce the NeX store back in the summer expansion, which contains different clothing items for your character to wear while they walk around aimlessly for no reason inside a tiny little room that served little purpose and nobody can see anyway outside your character portrait.
oh, and it was also overpriced to hell and back, with most items in the double digit range, and reaching upwards to almost $80 for a monocle.
needless to say the feedback was less than positive. Outside of a few who have more in-game money then they'll ever need (can use ingame money to purchase plex, then convert to aurum to buy cash shop item), the store is pretty much universally ignored.
