level all, after all you can equip all without much effort and have all 3 for what you need, just take you time on it, but if you want to choose one first, then WAR is the tank with the best borderline performance on the actual conten so you can take more adventage of this compared to PLD who is considered the worst tank by now until the balance on 4.0
i main paladin because i actually like to tank. yeah, warriors like to top the dps meters. but i like to tempered will and cover a damage dealer that's about to get kicked (baelsar's wall) by the boss and watch as he fails, because i'm a wall of shining steel ^^
i also like to stoneskin and tempered will on a8, standing directly under the boss as he forms while the rest of the raid cowers in the back because knockback, but i don't budge an ilm
and i like to hallowed ground and eat demon claw all by myself, because that's what it feels like to be a tank
PLD mains never cease to amaze me with how delusional they are. Contrary to popular belief, anything a PLD can tank, so can a WAR.
Keep in mind that no matter which of the one you choose, both are able to tank successfully in both end-game and early game content.
Although, paladin has a small issue with aggro in levels ~30-40 (where you get your tank stance, warrior gets it at 30), you can overcome it with a bit more careful play. On the other hand, warrior has hardly any problems with aggro 1-60 provided you "know" how to tank and keep enemies on you constantly.
The real game, however, begins when you hit 60. Paladin, as it is mentioned above, is a straightforward TANK meaning you don't deal damage but you can sustain the highest of hits with many defensive abilities + ability to heal yourself. For warrior, which is my main, things become a bit more fun and challenging. Warrior gets a dps stance + skills for it (a HARD hitting single target, and a decent aoe). Efficient warriors manage to switch between stances mid-fight (what we call stance dance) in order to not only tank but to achieve high dps as well. However, if you don't know how to handle this properly, it can be fatal.
Regarding the tank aspect, warrior has the highest HP pool of all classes + mitigation skills + beastly self-healing ability. Im sure you might have heard of cases where warriors are able to solo dungeon bosses or even alliance-raid bosses when everyone else is dead.
To sum up, paladin is easier to play than warrior only because it misses the dps aspect and requires somewhat less focus on your character (of course this is not the case in savage content). Warrior on the other hand, is much more fun to play but it needs you to constantly keep an eye on your stance (if you decide to switch mid-fight) and also the damage you are taking. Both classes got their pros/cons and we must not forget the skill gap between players as well.
DRK best for speed runs, I love that I can sprint all the time in between pulls and use both MP and TP.
^ so true
Warrior is superior to paladin in nearly every conceivable way.
-Better single target and AOE DPS.
-Superior enmity generation.
-Cooldowns are sufficient for current content so main tanking as warrior isn't an issue in terms of defense (the reason why people don't like warrior main tanking is because it gains most of it's dps in the off tank position where it is free to use it's defensive CDs for more fell cleaves)
-Warrior has near unlimited tp, paladin has severe TP issues if there' no breaks, ninja or brd/mch.
-superior self-healing through berzerk + internal release + equilibrium or vengeance + bloodbath + berzerk + internal release + overpower/decimate
You have DRK at 60 use that for main tanking, paladin is....well, trash lol it really is. DRK is a better main tank than paladin and when paired with warriors storms path, it laughs in the face of whatever paladin has to offer defensively.
paladin needs Jesus.
I main all three tanks:
PLD:
My go-to tank when I'm learning new content. I also prefer it during some Raids.
DRK:
My bread & butter for dungeons, as well as for that 1/20 times where I don't feel like being MT.
WAR:
My least played, but I'll hop on her when I want to have fun as MT and OT.
I leveled PLD to 34 for the Awareness crossclass and then never touched it again. I just find it incredibly barebones and a bit dull, but I do hear that things get a little better at 60.
WAR, on the other hand... a beautifully designed job. All its abilities flow really well together, and its ridiculous self-healing means it doesn't matter if my healer dies halfway through a fight.
PLD is great if you're a sucker for support elements and don't mind a less diverse and engaging range of play. DRK is wonderful fun too and while I loved level 50 Warrior, I have yet to play him at 60 enough to feel comfortable with it, though keep in mind that Expert roulettes are pretty much the extent of difficulty I expose myself to.
*still needs to learn how to mass-pull with Warrior without suffering a panic attack*
If you're not MT as DRK your doing it wrong. DRK gets MP from taking damage (blood price), more MP = more DA + Souleater & DA + Carve and Spit. They also proc reprisal and low blow timer reset only when parrying an attack. Even if you're paired with a PLD you should be MT as PLD's proc for shield swipe isn't near as good as DRK's reprisal & low blow and they can stay in sword oath most of the fight (only problem with them is their damage combo includes an enmity generation skill and you'll have to power slash more)
I play 3 tanks equally and ... will suggest pick PLD first if you will levelling the rest as you won't want to go back to PLD... ^^;
As everyone say all tanks can tank same good, the shield only make you look better but not tank better.
And very often in daily experts, when you have some super DPSers, each Flash sounds like laughing at your lack of dps and helpless.
ATM PLD is really less fun than WAR and DRK. Only fun when your need to carry the healer.
The only thing I've found PLD useful in is 24 man raids to help horrible healers stay alive because they can't do mechanics. The only reason this works is because damage should be that much of a issue. But that benefit is so small and niche it's not really that strong of a point. So....WAR.
TLDR; PLD = Mostly dead atm. Go War.
Since you seem to enjoy the tanking class, I suggest to level up all and then check what's the most fun for you on Level 60. Order doesn't truly matter.
By the way, don't get the wrong impression - just because a bunch of people are talking poorly about the PLD right now, does not mean this class is not worth to level up. (By the way, this class gets a buff with Stormblood.)
I am a former WAR-Main who had to switch to PLD/DRK-Main a few months ago due to me switching from OT to MT. While my heart is still beating for WAR and I simply love to play this class, I cannot say anything bad about PLD/DRK.
People who say PLD is trash don't know how to properly utilize such a simple class, as easy as that. I tank anything in Sword Oath by the way, if I play PLD, including during low levels such from 30-50+. And in 24man-raids this class can be gold, if no healer wants to heal you AGAIN as MT, not even these from your own alliance. ( Unfortunately I see this way too often. )
I think the players replying to this topic before me pretty much already said it; WAR does by far the most damage right now, with DRK behind it and PLD last. However, PLD is also the easiest to play and DRK can be a bit annoying if you're doing it right.
PLD/DRK are MTs, WAR is OT. You should also take this under consideration when later choosing a main class.
But personally I also enjoy WAR the most - you can easily make up for at least one...not so good DD and can feast on the tears of your opponents. Really great feeling. Once you tasted the sweet smell of a Fellcleave-crit you don't want to miss it ever again.
This is interesting to me, since the first comment that even mentions anything between Warriors and Paladins are comments that warriors cannot do. You do not have cover, you do not have tempered will, and as far as I can tell Zurvan Ex is the one fight that Warriors aren't being brought along in anyways.
outside of pvp, cover is extremely situational and borderline useless and the warriors equivalent to tempered will is holmgang minus the ability to cure bind and heavy - again very situational unless you're pulling trash or something and you get bound or heavied which i don't think is even a big deal or in pvp as an extra purify i guess (i can't really think of a situation in a raid where this is relevant).
As for zurvan as you said, it's one fight and the only reason why warriors aren't being brought along is because of holmgang lasting 6 seconds which isn't long enough to cheese that particular mechanic comfortably. However paladin got pushed out of an entire tier of raiding because it is a by far inferior DRK and still is even in creator.
Think its best to just play all three , thats what I do its really fun just to switch each up and keep things fresh
knowing how to utilize a class =/= said class isn't trash, because it is.
Paladin got left out of the entirety of gordias (and speedruns in general) for a reason which was it has far inferior magical mitigation in comparison to DRK. No matter how well you can play the class, it will always be inferior to DRK simply because it does less DPS and cannot mitigate anywhere near as close making it tough on the healers.
Even in A12S. Yes, you could complete it with a paladin but why take a paladin when DRK can mitigate magical damage better making it easier on healers and on top of that bring better dps (assuming the skill of the drk and pld are equal)? You're willfully gimping yourself.
I enjoy playing paladin a lot as i enjoy tanking in general, but i hate that paladin is at an obvious disadvantage compared to the other two (WHM and to a lesser extent monk too in their roles), so much that the get left out of speedruns and even back in gordias days - an entire tier. Whatever the buff is that paladin is going to get, they need it.
PLD-Great for taking less damage. Great for supporting the team esp in 4 man dungeons with less than perfect randoms. Utility in being able to take a ton of damage and not feel a thing. Really good when running with poor/new healers. Damage is completely awful, but that's not why paladins tank. We all know we run around with a pool noodle. In my experience, best aggro hold.
WAR-Fun for just beating faces in. Great for big pulls and damage dealt. Bad when it comes to poor/new healers and OP DPS (I understand people have other opinions on this) but overall helps kill all the things faster which helps mitigate its issues. Fantastic health recovery. Tends to be a tad squishy, health regen only lasts so long, pray the healer is good. More positional with its Overpower aggro ability, but can equip flash so that helps even it out.
In the end, play both, enjoy both, see what you like to play the most! :3 That's what the game is about in the end, having fun and beating face!
Warriors carry a big stick.
Paladins cower behind a shield.
Go Warrior.
Went ahead and got paladin to 50 and just got my warrior to 50 going to stick with warrior till 60 :) fell cleave to good.
By seing some of the answers i can just say : thanks to split on the face to all that like playing pld
it's not because you don't like it that you have to be so awfull
Agreed. I mean, you see PLDs say some dumb things too, but it's often because they get shite on so much, of course they feel the need to compensate in some way. In general (I have met a few exceptions), WARs I find to be the most obnoxious. :/ In my personal experience, they yell at healers the most, make poor stance-dancing choices, etc... I'm just sorta filled with dread when I get one in dungeon content, because a lot of them don't meet the skill ceiling you need to be good at the Job, but they like to point fingers at everyone one else when things go badly.
Plus all you gotta do is look through this thread. All they seem to talk about is how much trash everyone else is compared to them. :P Not exactly the kind of people I'd want to play with tbh lol.
Get both at 60, be flexible!
Well, currently I main a rogue. I'm a long time WoW player and I always got stuck playing either the healer or the tank. It was fine for a long time. I love both roles, but after six years, I wanted to kick butt too.
So, when I recently returned to FFXIV, I decided to focus on dealing damage. I desired to start a new character so I could reexperience the story arc. I had never played a rogue before so there you go. Sandi Kandi was born! :D
Now, in the past, I played a paladin. It's easy to play and I like the idea of mitigating damage rather than taking damage and healing my health back.
I feel Flash and Provoke are good, solid tools for tanking, while Convalescence is one of the best cool downs in the game when used properly.
Subjectively, paladins feel more like tanks than warriors. When I play my marauder, it feels a lot like when I play a damage dealer. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I like it.
However, when I'm in the mood to tank, I fall back to my paladin. It's just something about that shield and sword that makes me feel like I can take on the world with the help of three friends. :)
I am a Paladin, haven't tried the other ones yet as I'm just starting out. I am interested in trying them, but so far I really enjoy the paladin. I normally go towards DPS in most games, but I needed a change and haven't been disappointed with it yet. :)
I'm not saying Paladins are the best, but I feel more like a "hero" as a paladin in comparison to the way a warrior or dk plays. They just seem so... unrefined. Nothing thematically beats a sword and shield of justice.
HA! It's funny because it's tru-
OH wait! Except every WAR hides behind every other tank at first sight. Too afraid to take a single hit! Where's that testosterone!? Where's that pride!?
I'll tell you where: dripping down your legs with the pee you soiled yourself with!
Instead of cowering behind the other tanks, you WARs should grow a spine! Take a hit! And please... when there's 2 of you, one of you just need man up and be a tank. none of us want to slip in the puddles you leave behind trying to decide.
...Or better yet, go back to your little support corner and let the BIG boys play.
Was that supposed to be a rebuttal!? Was this meant to shake me!? It was a rather poor attempt!
What a poor choice of words. "Believe"? No, we don't "believe" this is the case at all. Do you "believe" the sky is blue? No. You KNOW the sky is blue.
Here I thought Warriors were supposed to be pillars of might! Unwavering beasts whose primal rage strikes fear into the hearts of lesser men! Yet all I fear in my heart now is disappointment... Are these truly the sharpest fangs you can bare!?
...Or maybe... Perhaps I have caught you during one of your many periods of pacification! It is indeed rare that you don't announce it to the world every second you draw closer to exhaustion! Very well! I will give you the time you require to catch your breath!
Sauron must have been a WAR. He could fell cleave 6 enemies with each swing, and then die from one hit to the finger.
I want a WAR nerf so badly in 4.0 just to hear all the arrogant asshat warriors crying tears of unfathomable sadness.
Darling, you need to go sit in a corner for a few seconds until you can sound less insane. Unless of course you're trolling on purpose, in which case: well done. They seem to be falling for it. /clap
(guys, her main says DRK, as much as I love PLDs I doubt she actually means the BS she's spouting. For shame taking such obvious bait!).
Anyway, back on topic: level all the tanks. You need paladin for provoke at least. Then decide based on what role you want. I would heavily recommend checking out DRK since it's so OP in current content compared to WAR or PLD.
Paladin is the default Main Tank in... pretty much all situations except A12 (and whatever other ones have the heavy magic damage). The times when Paladin can't main tank, people want a Dark Knight instead. You're fighting with a pool noodle, but in PUG content, much easier on the team to have a tank that can mostly take care of themselves.
As Warrior you're basically always Off Tank to take full advantage of their offensive abilities. They're essentially wasted as a main tank (and little more than an MP sink for healers once their cooldowns are gone). Keep in mind a lot of groups don't even bring an off tank anymore if there's no tank-swap mechanic, sooo you might have problems there. You will have to really practice where and when you need your cooldowns, because you don't have a lot, and using them inappropriately will reeeeally piss off your healers.
Honestly I recommend starting as Paladin. it's easier to learn, and more forgiving when you make a mistake. If you decide main tank isn't for you: go with WAR. If you want to stay as main tank: stick with PLD and/or change to DRK when you get the chance.
