Promotionnal items

Hi,

First of all, it will be about mog kiosk, so if you're here to whine about it, please choose another topic :D

So I was thinking that all those minions/music/emote we get when purchasing goods in the SE online store or when pre-ordering an expansion are cool. But past a certain date (about 2 years), those codes become unredeemable and thus can't be obtained anymore, forever.
But why not propose those items through the mog kiosk once they aren't redeemable anymore? Let's be honest here, a huge part of the goods are mostly boughts by players who want the in game bonus for minion collection. And those same people are sad when they realise that there's a code not obtainable anymore (Before Meteor/ARR OST, 2.0 pre-order). You know how many people would pay the mog kiosk for them? A lot. And that would be even more budget for the future of the game.

Please, consider adding unobtainable goods' bonus in game items to the kiosk for those who weren't there in time, just like past in game events items (which were basically free).

Because people will whine about "you just had to buy it back then when you did not know about the game / was no more left"
It makes them feel "special" just like the event items, titles etc thus the whinning when they strarted adding past event items in the Cs like Lightning hairstyle.

Add the promotions to their real product again? why not
Let the people just buy the promotions without the product? no

I wouldn't mind if they could add the codes to the product again, but the codes would basically not have an expiration date if they ever planned to do that.

Which they can't do because code selling would become much more rampant and would essentially superfuel RMT. At least this way with the expiration date, after a while, those codes become useless and can't be sold. It's a design choice to make the codes have an expiration date and not do any further runs after it. I would be OK with this, but make the Mog Station version cost MORE than the physical item by a factor of 10x (so the £34.99 Before Meteor OST item would cost £349.90 on the Mog Station)

I would like a way to get the moogle cap :/ but i guess it will never happen.

I really want that Shantotto minion. :c

What prevent them to give an expiration date to the new codes ?
Something like a month for example

Exclusive items should remain exclusive. I don't see why people feel entitled to everything and if you missed out I'm sorry but that's life.

And what about thos who wanted to get the item but had to face sold out ? Should they be punished for SE's inability to manage their stock properly ?
Why does it feel so good to know you (general you, not you you Seraf) have something another person does not have instead of helping him to get it too ? will it ruin the pleasure ?

How about yes, and here's my justification for this. People complain about exclusive items should remain exclusive, however I believe if the prices are raised through the roof (be glad I only went for 10x the price, I had planned to go a LOT higher), then the exclusivity argument goes out the window because the people who got it on the first room got it for 90% off AND got the physical merchandise associated with it. This means they still got a miles better deal. If you still think that is absolutely ridiculous, tell me why it is, and what else we can do instead to satiate those who believe the items should remain exclusive while also allowing those who couldn't get the item due to it selling out (which apparently HAS happened before) a way to get the item.

Actually it's a game, also there's nothing special about the fact you happened to be playing the game at a specific point in time, sorry to disappoint you but you're not special for happening to be in the right place at the right time.

And also, an exclusive item IRL is exclusive because it's made of precious materials, or contains lots of valuable things like masterpiece crafted items, or both at the same time, which is what a collector edition usually is. They produce it at little quantity because it's either really expensive to make or because they sell it at a loss.
We're here talking about some data that can be infinitely generated. Where is the exclusivity? The only thing that makes it "exclusive" is because SE said "we are now stoping to generate it!". They don't pay anything else once the item exists, and they only get benefits by selling it, which is the whole point of the mog kiosk.

You're forgetting one of the biggest reasons the exclusives exist:

To encourage impulse buys.

If you offer something - ANYTHING - that, once past a certain point, will never be available again, you're going to get a certain percentage of buyers who, quite frankly, don't care about the item and may not even care about the limited-time extra, but is afraid that if they don't get it they might want it later but won't be able to get it.

It's a very, very effective tactic, and something that would be completely undermined if SE started providing other ways to get those extras later on. Suddenly these impulse buyers no longer feel the pressure. "If I don't buy it now," they reason, "I'll just need to wait a bit, and it'll come back. I can nab it then, if I still want it." This is not thinking that SE (or any seller, really) wants to encourage.

When a company provides a product, they want to move as much as possible of that product up front. Creating a product and having it sit around unpurchased in warehouses for who-knows how long is an expense, and they want to do as much as possible to minimize that expense.

Because if they produce too many items for the demand they're left at the other extreme with a ton of useless merchandise no one wants - this was what happened with FFXIV 1.0's Collector's Edition - SE overestimated demand and produced far more CE versions than what was sold, leading to a glut of unsold stock (I remember seeing one 1.0 CE version sitting unloved at my local EB Games for literally 8 months after 1.0's launch with a heavy discount on it), to the point SE later instructed all retailers still with unsold FFXIV 1.0 stock to return them to SE for disposal.

As unused 1.0 copies's registration codes actually are useable for ARR (in other words, owning 1.0 entitles you to download ARR for free), as are it's item codes (Onion Helm for Collector's Edition, Garlond Goggles for the 'standard' edition, which is actually harder to find ironically.), remaning unopened copies of FFXIV 1.0 (both CE and standard version) are selling for huge amounts on sites like eBay. No doubt SE wants to avoid a repeat of this and so now has ARR merchandise in-game item codes with a default use-by date, specifically to avoid onselling.

I adore my Bahamut minion to death and I wouldn't want SE to make it easy for people to just "obtain" it via the Mog Store.

I think every two years they should recreate active tokens on physical items for a month allowing you to get the in-game codes again.

Every two years.
For a month.
You then get only a week to activate your code.

This is the bit that's tough for me to understand... While I certainly understand why SE would want limited-time items to remain limited since (as I mentioned above) it encourages impulse buying, why does the fact that you adore your Bahamut minion mean no one else should be able to have one? If other people get the Bahamut minion, will you suddenly stop adoring yours? If Bahamut minion is so adorable, doesn't that mean that it should be MORE available, not less, so that other people also have the chance to adore their own Bahamut minions?

I can understand why folks would be miffed if minions awarded through some amazing achievement suddenly got put up for sale. Those minions are a badge of honor, showing that you accomplished something amazing. But Bahamut? All it shows is that you happened to be in the market for a soundtrack at the right time.

People want to be unqiue, having minions/items which were only aviable at a timelimit is a way to do that. If a lot of players have the same things, it loses one of the things which makes it "special" (being unique and rare).
There are some items I would like to have too (like the singing moogles) but at the same time I dont think everyone should have everything, especially if they missed their chance.

There is really only one instance where items were special playing at a specific point in XIV. However, they were earned ingame or rewarded for supporting the company during a very rare event in the industry and genre. They were not a promotional item.

Legacy Items

The idea of promotion items is to promote an product and increase the sell of it during a specific time frame ("buy it now, you would not get a second chance" thing).
If people know that they can get the bonus item later in the cash shop much cheaper (because it will be only the bonus item without the physical item), then less people would buy the product.

The same reason why most game developers don't give away preorder items to games that were bought after the launch. It would hurt the prelaunch sells.

Promotion items are 95% about PR and only 5% about the game. They exist purely for marketing something outside of the game.

Maybe a different color moogle set so that the people who qualified for the first ones can still stand out. ( though if the original is dyeable then this isn't a solution.)

You can take this in the other sens too. Lots of people would want the goods just for the in game item. But paying 35$-40$ and more for an in game item doesn't feel attractive, even though this price is for the goods. So they don't buy it.
Now, if you put only the in game item in the mog kiosk, for the same price or a bit higher than the other item from the same category, all those people would be more inclined to buy it, which at the end would represent a lot, taking into account that new people will be able to buy it too. It's a permanent gain that at some point will be higher than what the goods actually fetched for the game, considering that the good also have production costs, and sending costs.

You could be right. I'm not a professional market researcher. However, I'm guessing that neither are you. SE, on the other hand, doubtless has actual professionals working on this very problem - and those professionals have advised SE to use this marketing strategy.

We can armchair about it all we like on the forums. It costs us nothing to do so. You can bet, though, that these professionals take their research very seriously, and while they may not always be right, their careers are on the line if they screw up too badly or too often! I'm willing to bet that SE has done the research, and decided that marketing these things as extras to other products is making the company more money that simply putting the extras up on the Mog Station would.
