Ok now this is just bs, 10 minutes left on my fishers intuition for Kuno the Killer and the fish sense something amiss. REALLY?!?!?!,
It just means you're way too long at that Fishing Spot. I believe the "Anti Bot" Message comes up when you stay on a Fishing Spot for like 30-40 Minutes. Just move a bit further away and you can continue,...
or go to New-Gridania, cast your Line once and go back to the Spot.
Yeah I was there quite a while. Had a double gloom window and was really hoping to get him. I haven't tried the Gridania trick yet, thanks for the tip.
Of course rng scales with gathering maybe by a vast percentage. I did Feast of Famine with pentamelded ironworks ~790 gathering with food (i believed extra gathering would help) and i still had tons of misses for all fish except for nepto where i hooked it on the first try. (To hell with it, i still miss miner collectibles with 95% rate and 929 gathering maybe 3/20). I can imagine the case with big-fishing is much worse. So the best way to increase your chances is to get a decent GP food for more patience and many many cordials.
I do not believe that Gathering in any way improves the percentage chance that the fish you catch is going to be a specific kind of fish. I'm pretty sure that that is fixed: with a given bait at a given fishing hole, there's a 50% chance you'll get Fish X, 29% for Fish Y, 20% for Fish Z, and 1% chance for Big Fish Q.
I also don't think that Gathering improves the chance that a fish will slip the line - as long as you have enough Gathering to catch it at all. Each Big Fish has a certain amount of Gathering required to catch it. If you're under that number, ALL of that fish that you hook will get away, and you'll get a message saying that your Gathering is insufficient to catch that fish. Once you're past that threshold, though, these fish have a certain percentage chance that they'll get away when you catch them. For some, that chance is very high (like a 95% chance that upon hooking, the fish will get away), and for others it is much lower. I don't think that extra gathering improves that chance, though - ARR big fish with a high escape rate while fishing for them at level 50 STILL have a high escape rate when you fish for them at level 60. 10 levels worth of gear improvements hasn't helped one bit.
By the same token, I don't think having high Perception HURTS your chances. There are a lot of Fishers who believe that having high Perception results in Big Fish that are TOO big, and have a higher chance of getting away because of it. I don't think this is true at all. A record-breaking HQ Big Fish has exactly the same escape rate as a puny NQ Big Fish of the same type.
The only use for Gathering is to meet the "Can you catch this fish at all?" thresholds. Beyond that, it's all pure RNG.
Note that while I've said all of this, I don't have any concrete evidence to back it up. Fishing in this game is shrouded in mystery - unlike other gathering jobs, we're never told the chances of success or failure, and it's very difficult to see the exact effect that boosting various stats has on catching the stuff we're after. Any advice you hear on the topic should be taken with a grain of salt - INCLUDING the advice I've just given you.
Perception has nothing to do with catching rate or size. Size only matters for collectibles and its only affected by gathering. There is no doubt that fishing is shady but what has become clear is that no matter how much gathering or perception you have there is an invisible cap for either big or small fish nq or hq.
At least for hq rate, i believe it should be ~15% up to a max of 20% (food included) +50% if patience I = 65-70% hq rate which could be possible.
But i couldn't agree more that the whole thing is a mystery and we may never find out how it works....I for one, find perception to be useless for fisher as there are two "patience" to deal with the hq rate. I can't imagine someone to try to fish double or triple mooches without patience and just rely on perception.
ARR fish Titanic Sawfish, Shonisaurus, and Frilled Shark says 'hi'! :D Before Patience and Patience II the only things fishers were able to rely on were perception and RNG and for example a few players I know, including myself, collected all big fish before 3.0 hit. With Heavensward, hunting down the fish just got a looot whole easier, and less of a timesink. :D
On topic; All big fish, marked with a star/s what I've noticed eyeballing, have an inbuilt escape rate.
While perception has nothing to do with catching rate, it definitely has something to do with size. HQ fish are larger than NQ fish, which is why "HQing" is favorable for collectables, as the size of the fish translates to the collectability.
Base HQ chance (with enough perception, excluding the increase from Patience I/II) likely doesn't go past 15%, similar to Miner/Botanist.Quote:

Most noticable for me was when i use food to boost perception for lvl50+ leves, at that time my gear barely made requirments to land fishes. But those windows soon become irrelevant as preset escapage for bigfish is direct countermeasure for our Gathering stats, because if it would follow only parabolic line principle we either would catch bigfish all the time or fish sizes would need to be too big to make them escape based on mathematical logic, but that is too much even for eorzean common sense of measurments
