I have both with ilvl of 200 but I think there is no reason to keep getting them outfitted anymore, there seems to be no reason whatsoever they have brought back the same garbage since they got maxed.
Is there something I am missing?

I just give my retainers the latest replaced set if gear as I improve. No real reason not to.
It became quite clear that gear doesn't affect quick ventures, and that is the only thing I send my retainers on. At the lowest ilvl possible, I still receive things like rare dyes, rare mats, HQ crafting armor and rare housing items. I stopped worrying about gearing them ages ago.
Like most others so far, they just get my hand-me-downs.
This has lately led to a weird situation where my no. 1 retainer had a higher ilvl than me..xD
Since he got the ilvl 250 crafted gear that I had traded in for Alex gear with better substats and I dropped the Sophia SMN book (his class) before the BLM staff (my main), so with that weapon he was suddenly better geared than me
He's still higher than my secondary cass, healer, who is only 246 so far.
My DoW retainer used to be the same job as me, but since I switched mains a while back, I just keep it equipped with whatever the latest dungeon drops are, the rest of the gear is handed down as it gets replaced. My DoL retainer is the same way. It gets new gear when my MIN gets new gear.
Whatever stats maximise the quantity of items gathered and call it good. Everything else is GC seal fodder.
Like the others, I give them hand me downs and that is it. However, since I always outfit myself with the best possible that is within my power to get that is HQ and fully melded, they still have really good gear.
I keep my girls looking fancy. They have 210 gear
I gave them some random PvP and dungeon gear from 3.0 and 3.1, then they added i200 AF gear to centurio vendor, gave them it and never bothered with upgrades after that. What's the point? Quick venture has a low requirement for "rare" stuff (even level 1 gear can).
All I do now with retainers is dress them up in an outfit and place them in my garden, sometimes even change their features with fantasia. This is literally all they are good for now.
Yup. Higher the iLv, higher the increase in chances of rare items brought back from explorations and quick ventures. Some rather look at RNG as 50/50 regardless of rate though. I can understand why someone wouldn't bother to upgrade, and also understand why someone else would.
DoW retainers will always benefit from the highest ilvl gear you can give them. Whilst it's true that above a set level they are able to get the rarest items (currently i200 I think) the higher the ilevel the more likely to bring it back they are. They're also more likely to bring HQ versions where possible.
DoL retainers, in a similar way, benefit from the highest gear you can give them. The amount of items returned during normal ventures increases to a set maximum when the gathering stat is increased. In the same way as DoW the higher this stat is, the more likely to get a rare item from a quick venture & have it HQ. Perception isn't believed to matter.
How is it wrong? Just because you got rare items at low gear levels?
It makes no difference to the rate at which you obtain rare materials. As I said, do as you want. If you want to gear it and suffer the confirmation bias that it's working for you, that's great. I'll continue to not gear it and suffer the confirmation bias that it isn't making a difference. We'll both suffer confirmation bias, we'll both get stuff we want, and neither of us will care. /thread.
Oh, so you're one of those. Still doesn't prove your point though. /Thread
One of... those...? Making statements like these isn't very respectful. I'm not sure if I disrespected you (sorry if I did), but I don't really see the need for it.
Neither you, nor I, can prove that it improves (or doesn't) your rate of rare drop acquisition.
EDIT: I should add that the message doesn't say that it will increase the rate of rare materials, but simply that you will receive higher quality items with better gear. So, even if it does increase the rate, the message as it is written is incorrect. The rarest possible drops are possible with the lowest possible gear.
You're right, I said it too confidently. I am fairly confident in what I said, but I can't be 100%. You also stated yours matter-of-factly, though. I followed it up by saying we both could be wrong, who knows, /thread. Basically, I said I may be delusional, and I'll let you believe in your delusions
All I know is that through thousands of quick ventures sent between sending them in raid gear, to mid level, to not geared, and there was 0 noticeable difference in return.
My combat retainers are all being outfitted with i250 gear. I'm even fully SB'ing it before giving it to them, so I'll be able to just convert it to materia when they get an upgrade.
My gathering retainers, however, I just finished kitting them out. I200 MH and OH tools, i200 left side gear, i195 right side gear, HQ, with maxed out Gathering and Perception. Just as Gathering affects amount gathered and then time spent (on targeted runs) to a certain point, so too does Perception affect the chances of HQ to a certain point. I figure, no reason not to get as much as I can.
Unless there's an ilevel issue with ventures in SB, I do not plan on improving their gear until after they hit 70.
Yep both my retainers are level 60, and got both around IL225-230. They don't always bring me back great things. Sometimes I just want to shank em when they bring me fish, however both have brought me multiple times metallic dyes worth a lot of gil that has helped a bunch. You pretty much have to go into it thinking your retainer 9 times out of 10 is bringing you back junk. However they are epic for hunting mats if you need some quick gil or you're saving up for something.
Slightly OT but still relevant as this is a living topic. Has anyone noticed a sudden increase in rare dyes being returned, especially after the latest hotfix? It's as if they boosted it for Christmas glamour. Up until the fix I'd be be lucky to get rare dyes one a week with around 3*8 quick adventures a day. Now one retainer during a set of 8 adventures returns them, sometimes more.
It's just you. I have not gotten rare dyes lately.
