It may appear to be a dumb move, but say a service account has purchased both the PS3 and the PS4 versions of ARR, but has only purchased the PS3 version of Heavensward. Will that Heavensward purchase be able to convert to the PS4 version when Stormblood is released and the PS3 support is removed?
This is not my situation. It's just a question that occurred to me. I tend to think it's not something that will affect very many people.

The way it works as far as I recall if it's being done the same way is. You turn your PS3 HW into PS4 HW but you lose access to PS3 HW.

I am going to make a guess on how this should be done. Since it is probably not something that will affect enough people to be a big problem, I doubt the reps will have the time to respond.
My guess is quite simple. Just do the same conversion as you would be doing if you did not already have ARR on PS4. I believe that it has always been the case that if you buy a registration code that is good to make access to both base game and expansion(s), you can apply it to an existing account to activate expansion(s). An existing service account already has the base.
The process of conversion of PS3 to PS4 will produce a registration code that needs to be entered via the PS4 to activate both base and expansion on PS4. But if the base is already there, it will only activate the expansion. At least that is what I would hope to be the case.
Be aware though that if this is correct, the process will still completely remove all the access from PS3 on that service account. It will not just remove access to Heavensward from PS3.
This is still just a guess. I have no way to confirm it. -

I have a different question about the upgrade. Is it going to be limited to PS4? Not everyone with the PS3 version either has or wants a PS4. I think if they're dropping PS3 support, they should allow PS3 players to transfer to any other supported platform.

The alternative is just take away their platform and kick them out of the game entirely unless they pay for it a second time, after they've already bought it. Yea, if I had to guess the limiting factor is Sony, not SE. SE shouldn't care if you play on PC or PS3/PS4, but Sony certainly would care. Aside from that, you only paid for a license to play on Sony product, Sony doesn't have to pay for you to switch to PC if you don't have or can't buy a PS4. Keep in mind you don't actually buy the game, you only buy the license to play it on a specific console (insofar as you honor the EULA).

Shoot, the only reason FFXIV was even on PS3 before PS4 was contractual obligations from SE to Sony. 1.0 was fully intended to hit PS3, but it was literally impossible with how poorly put together it was, so a huge focus of 2.0 was making the game to be scaled as low as necessary. -

I have to side with Niwashi on this one. For every upgrade from PS3 -> PS4 SE probably has to pay Sony a fee while PC licences are essentially free for them to create. SE has on their records (You can check via mogstation) who has a registered PS3 copy and it would cost them nothing to offer these players a PC copy instead of SE paying Sony a fee to exchange the users copy for a PS4 one. Sony has already had their cut of the PS3 licence and has no real say in what happens with that licence as far as how SE deals with moving players over to PC as it is a platform outside of their control and they already took the cut for the initial (PS3) licence.

If person has a pc capable of running XIV why they playing on ps3 then anyways at that point it sounds like you playing on ps3 by choice so if they want a pc license they can pay up like everyone else that want to play on multiple platforms.

The PC client is also free for download already you just need a little entry into the database for your character saying you can log in via a PC client. So giving someone access to using the PC version would be their free option and would potentially save them a lot of money that could go back in their pockets instead of to Sony should enough players prefer to go this route. So unless there is some secret back door deal SE is getting with Sony to keep people locked to their platform (which is very anti consumer but so have a lot of SE choices lately) then I really see no reason to not offer this cost effective solution to people.Quote:
